New Lucas interview 2: 'Insists Unaltered Versions Of The OT Will Never Be Released'

I think it is a “they respect George’s wishes” type of thing more than any legal contract. And a couple of years after George passes they’ll likely release all the different cuts. I hope so anyway. That’s just my best guess to it all.

You’re right, it does all seem insane.

Kennedy’s definitely the one holding it back at this point. She’s already stated that she won’t mess with his movies.

In the 2017 Celebration interview where she said she wouldn’t mess with them? I think she meant she (Lucasfilm/Disney) wouldn’t make any further changes to George’s Special Editions. Unless she’s said something else since? (I really hope she has.)

There’s a transcript of the 2017 Celebration interview with her, and a video link, here:

Tough break for both Kershner and Marquand, they don’t even get a mention as directors of the other two films in the OT!

And as everyone knows, ‘neither The_Empire Strikes Back or Return Of The Jedi are available as their respective directors intended, or indeed made, on a modern and quality digital format.’ 😦

From the comments it looks like many fans are now mentioning this which is really cool to see.

Who not just release all the main different releases of all the Star Wars movies?

It is only George’s ego that will be bruised when he finds out many fans will prefer the original theatrical cuts.

George’s ego appears to have been the elephant in the room.

The audiences’ memories and experiences of the differing cuts, the other OT directors’ visions, and all pioneering work by all the creatives and craftspeople that no longer appear in the latest Maclunkey cuts, they all pale into insignificance when compared to that elephant.

This story is full of ironies. George Lucas is the man who taught us all how the will of the people is irrelevant when one person has too much power. He taught us that not when he was trying to, in his art, but by having too much power and ignoring the will of the people.

100% agree with that!

Can someone articulate how in the name of heck George Lucas can sell Lucasfilm, and then tell Disney to not release the originals, don’t they own the films and all archival material belonging to the Lucas archives?

Paid 4 billion its not his movie anymore.

Its just way too insane to contemplate.

I think it is a “they respect George’s wishes” type of thing more than any legal contract. And a couple of years after George passes they’ll likely release all the different cuts. I hope so anyway. That’s just my best guess to it all.

From the The 'Naysayer Guide’ by people who DON’T want an unaltered theatrical release of the Original Trilogy (Cat No. 5):

^ the tweets are from 2017, with Disney in charge of Lucasfilm. There is also more in that awesome Naysayer Guide thread.

It sucks there is no such respect for Kershner and Marquand, the other talented craftspeople who worked on the originals, and also for the audience who made Star Wars what it was.

George fancies himself in the realms of Michelangelo?! 😄

Very funny for him to say this, also kind of sad. If anything George is clearly one of bean counters who would have commissioned somebody else to create a work of art. Imagine if a Pope back in history claimed that some masterpiece was all their own doing and had the right to paint over it.

That is a great point.

Talking of Spielberg and Lucas:

A screenshot of Steven Spielberg talking about how George Lucas persuaded him to direct the Indiana Jones films, with George being very economical with the facts of how many stories he’d actually wrote. . . . even to his good friend Spielberg!:

George Lucas will receive Honorary Palme d’or at Cannes festival
Time

I said this in the other thread about George’s latest interview in again talking nonsense, and blaming fans & critics for his own shortcomings:

Whenever George speaks, ii is time to get another pinch of salt, to then get the factchecker out, look for the false equivalencies, and then contrast his newer claims with the contradictory statements he’s previously made on the subject.

As Billy Dee Williams would say: “It works every time”. 😉

Good for him, although I wish he would smile more, or look a little happy (collecting a prestigious award from an old friend!).

Yeah, it doesn’t take much to smile for a photo, or look like you are pleased or even happy. Maybe he isn’t? I find it difficult to care too much.

Lucas on the Prequels - "It is a kids’ movie. It’s always been a kids’ movie."

Hardened1337 said:

Lucas defended his Star Wars prequel films against the haters, arguing that critics have forgotten that Star Wars was never meant to be a grown-up movie. “It was supposed to be a kid’s movie for 12-year-olds that were going through puberty, who don’t know what they’re doing, and are asking all the big questions: What should I be worried about? What’s important in life?” he said. “And Star Wars has all those things in there. They’re buried in there but you definitely get it, especially if you’re young.”
The negative response to his Star Wars prequels, Lucas argued, came from “critics and fans who had been 10 years old when they saw the first one” and didn’t want to watch a children’s film. The public trashing of Jar Jar Binks — one of the first figures to be canceled on the then-nascent internet — reminded Lucas of the original response to C-3PO. “Everybody said the same thing about 3-PO, that he was irritating and we should get rid of him,” said Lucas. “When I did the third one it was the Ewoks: ‘Those are little teddy bears. This is a kid’s movie, we don’t want to see a kids’ movie. I said: ‘It is a kids’ movie. It’s always been a kids’ movie.'”

Some things never change…

He knows the media and many fans still give unquestioning credence to his every claim. That’s also a little sad, really.

I’m not super excited for this but i have to say the production design is amazing, so are the fight scenes. I was expecting it to be awful but i was pleasantly surprised.

Same here for me. If we get something closer to Andor, than to Ahsoka, BoBF or Kenobi, I’ll be happy.

New Lucas interview - the originals "look terrible"

“We did release the original one on laserdisc and everybody got really mad, they said ‘It looks terrible.’ And I said ‘Yeah, I know it did,'” said Lucas. “That is what it looked like.”

I can’t roll my eyes hard enough.

Yes. Cue a thousand Lucas fan boys on reddit and social media telling everyone that is the real reason why George won’t release the original cuts on any format later than DVD:

‘It looks terrible.’ And I said ‘Yeah, I know it did,'” said Lucas. “That is what it looked like.”

George Lucas will receive Honorary Palme d’or at Cannes festival

Steren said:

Guys I’m sorry if it affects you but you seem like a bit obtuse

I get your position on the whole special edition thing, but on the interview I’ve shared Lucas doesn’t talk about reeditions, he is asked about subjects we’ve rarely heard him on, and I just thought it’d be interesting to react on this.

The title of your thread is “George Lucas will receive Honorary Palme d’or at Cannes festival”, and this is something that George is talking about at Cannes picking up his award, so it doesn’t really appear obtuse.

If you are looking for praise or only positivity in what George says about the Original Trilogy, at Cannes or elsewhere, you are probably on the wrong site.

I’m pleased he’s picking up an lifetime award at the Palme d’or, but George’s comments at the awards, are going to be talked about in such a thread.

When you say “I get your position on the whole special edition thing”, I guess that’s not your position, then?

Jar-Jar Binks who is 20+, says that Padme 14, is “pretty hot”, to a 9 year old:

The random YouTube / Vimeo etc video finds thread for the Original Trilogy

Caston said:

Has anyone seen any good Original Trilogy focused videos lately?

Are there any other good channels out there, apart from HelloGreedo and EC Henry, that still do quality OT themed videos?

There is a list of YouTube channels and other media that sometimes feature the Original Trilogy in the “FAQs, Information & Useful Links” part of the OT Index thread, but yeah, there isn’t much new content on the OT these days. I think the algorithm has likely helped put a stop on that.

Disney+ streaming platform : Star Wars content & various other info
Time

Bob Iger Reflects on Disney’s Streaming Launch: “We Invested Too Much” - at Hollywood Reporter

He says they invested to much in the streaming service with new shows, but it didn’t have to be that way. Disney has plenty of content in their archives they still haven’t shown, that they easily could, and cheaply too.

Sure, there has to be a balance of new and old content, and they know what would attract more subscribers in showing older rarely seen or available content (and a certain OOT!), but they simply refuse to do it, or even acknowledge it.

As JadedSkywalker says above, $50 for a short season on a steelbook is insane, but just about more preferable than subscribing to Disney.

Looking for the Star Wars Return of The Jedi Soundtrack
Time

There is a cool blog post by the person who wrote the liner notes for the above release, here: https://www.lukaskendall.com/post/the-star-wars-4cd-anthology (Lukas Kendall)

The RavensFilm Productions YouTube channel did a 30 minute review/retrospective video on the 1993 release, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gHHMBLHTcsA

And Collectors Entertainment Network YouTube Channel did an 8 minute unboxing/content type video on it, here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSwohrxp7Go

That 1993 box set release is something I’ll definitely be looking to add to my collection.
