Keep up the great work Ady.
Keep up the great work Ady.
Nitpick - Light can be seen bleeding out from under R2's dome in this shot.

On this subject I was wondering if you had any plans for the display in the Millennium Falcon when Han first mentions Lando...
No, i don't think that we need to see a display at that point so i won't be adding one...
You mean we don't get to see Lando's myspace page?
We're already heading down the road where future generations will need to test historic video and film record using heuristic analysis. Aside from the ethical argument, it does provide some exciting possibilities for restoring Star Wars to it's 1977 glory.
I was also thinking about the recent discovery of the full version of Fritz Lang's Metropolis. The print is in rough shape, but a technology like this could help restore new sections of the film to a watchable state.
@Ripplin - Superpowers! Got any!?!
This is a university research project, but this could make a huge impact on fan preservation efforts in the next few years when some of this reaches the market. Exciting stuff.

Bottom line: Star Wars DVD + Books and Photographic reference = BluRay quality or better.
imageshack flaked out. I re-posted the image on 111 so you can see it.
Thanks for the feedback.
edit: I started a discussion on a really cool technology for upsampling video using photographs to add missing information/improve resolution.
Don't post responses in Adywan's thread, but check this out:
After a bit more thinking I have some more notes of the second shot in the SD Collision sequence:
I mocked-up fixes for the problems I presented in my previous post.
It's been about a month since I posted, but I've been lurking. Great work on the color corrects Ady. Happy birthday to your family.
Throwing something new into the mix, a continuity issue concerning ship positions and lighting:
This looks like digital photography rather than the film stock on which Jedi was shot. It looks like it's unused stuff for the SEs. Perhaps it's a fanfilm, Game Sourcebook image, or something created for the CCG.

Not if they're heading away from the battle. Why go toward an already dangerous situation if you're trying to make a hasty escape?
A very good argument, but I don't know if the audence at large would think of it while they're going "f--- yeah!". We only see two walkers bite it in Empire, and while the snowspeeders are doing their best trying to trip these mosters it would be pretty cool to see an X-wing make a surprise appearance and blow the crap out of an AT-AT
Adywan wants to make the Battle of Hoth bigger, so I'm just trying to think of something beyond "more walkers".
At the end of the day it's always his edit, and my ideas are a take it or leave it thing.
The Oompa Loompa Kemobi debate and various permutations of the Emperor's hologram seem well covered, so i thought I would add a couple of ideas.
A couple of things I considered mocking up, thought I would get some reaction first:
* The Executor and her fleet would most certainly be visible from the ground, as DS II was in Jedi. It would be cool to see them from the POV of a ground pounder.
* Every time a transport launched it had x-wings escorting it. It always seemed to me the X-wings might have shot at targets of opportunity (read AT-ATs) as they left the rebel base. This would be another way to expand the scope of the Hoth battle. it would require a new sequence, and maybe some 3d model work, but it would be amazing to see Red flight put torpedos into an AT-AT.

That's what I'm saying! Obi-Wan is tiny! I've always found his close-ups funny in this scene because I'm imagining them zooming in on a tiny Alec Guiness!
After thinking about it, I'm guessing they had him tiny so that they could have this shot:
which is cool, but weird if Obi-Wan is standing 15 feet behind Yoda and impossible if Obi-Wan is just made larger.
Alright, back to mini-Obi-Wan for a second. I think this shot could work if we go for the "Obi-Wan is standing really far away from everyone". Yoda would have to be out of focus while Obi-Wan is talking, then as he is vanishing Yoda would come into focus, rack focus style. If focuspuller on the boards is really a focus puller, he could tell us more about it.
I can't think of any OT FX shots that used rack focus or DOF. I'm not sure they could have done it with the technology of the time.
I always thought Obi Wan was standing away from Yoda and this was a perspective thing. The branch is the one shot screws it up, but like the tiny TIE in Jedi it's a mistake in the layer order. I hope Adywan includes a fix.

Here's another mock-up of both the darker Star Destroyer and a Super Star Destroyer that better matches the lighting in the next shot.
Nice. The foreground SD wasn't contrasting enough with the greebles in the other shot. Now it stands out.

The words on this display wiggle.
It says "Sweet Talkin' Woman" ELO - Out of the Blue.
One more for the night. I found what might be a stand in that doesn't move during the Hoth battle. Maybe you could make his head 1) move 2) vaporize

... But then, I did always like the idea that they had to land the AT-ATs REALLY far away.
At least outside the Rebel's sheilded area. And the drop ships would be vulnerable to surface to air durring the drop, so that's another good reason to mount your offensive line at a distance.
I forgot one
Vader Hologram - Poor quality, especially bad around edges. I don't know if this screengrab does justice to how bad this one looks on screen in motion.
The element is simply Vader standing, then putting his hands on his hips. You could paint the whole thing out and it shouldn't be too hard to find a simliar shot to convert to a hologram.
Riplin: The prequels had some bad acting, good design. The clone war sequence was the whole reason to watch AOTC. Adywan has already tied ANH more dirrectly into ROTS, so I'm just acting on that.
I'm just throwing out ideas. They're all just brainstorms. If Adywan uses one I can point at the screen and go "OOoooo!!!! OOoooo! Mine!!!"
The one shot of the imperial fleet is fine if the ships all face different directions, but the one ship sliding along the arrow needs correction pretty badly. If Adywan only did that, the shot would still be much improved.
Here's a couple more ideas I had for your consideration:
Falcon full size detail corrective matte: The Falcon full size prop was shot from a few angles that the set dressers didn't anticipate. Sometimes the detail level doesn't hold up.
Hoth Walker idea: This is really more of a general idea rather than just the one shot. Since the Hoth battle is going to be bigger and more intense, how about using a few prequel walkers?
The lowered gun looks great! That one always stuck out to me.
Here's a few fixes for consideration:
It's red in ANH. Yellow in Empire. In ROTJ he wears these clothes when he's on Tatooine, and for the rest of the film he pretty much wears the same thing he did in ANH.
In Empire Han has two costumes, the Hoth protective gear and his "Bespin" clothes. Only the one set of pants has the yellow stripe.
I rather doubt pouring tons of hours into changing a yellow stripe to red is high on Adywan's list, but it the interest of putting the idea out there, well... there it is.
Yes, but the blood stripe has a fan backstory that ties into the Han Solo novels from way back. It's sort of a Corelian medal of valor.
I'm sure the costume designer just thought yellow contrasts better against brown, but the stripe has been a sore point for many people.
One more nitpicky suggestion. This shot has visible wires that the models slid along. Aside from the pyro it's a very static shot and could use a little extra something.
A few suggestions:
- This would impact many shots, and many of them are blurry shots of Han running, so this could be very difficult to do convincingly.
Dak's helmet - You did a great job with color correcting these in A New Hope, but they did it again in Empire:
Snowspeeder markings - there are numerous examples of this, but this images are indicitive:
I played with adding an orange stripe to the front of this speeder.
Luke doesn'r really look like he's in this shot. The lighting doesn't match, the registration was poor, and there's no shadow effect under him.
SUGGESTION: FIX SNOWSPEEDER MARKINGS
I did a search for this and I haven't seen this mentioned yet. The full sized snowspeeders that the actors sit in had different markings than the miniatures. The large props have grey panels (and in some places none at all) where the minatures have orange. It would be nice to see these markings fixed so the are consistently the same color rather than changing.
I have followed this forum on and off for some time, but have never posted before. I was so impressed by Adywan's cut of Star Wars I had to say Thank You! It was everything the Special Edition should have been. I sat and watched Star Wars with my two best friends and we fucking went nuts over how cool it was.
Keep up the fantastic work!
