The 90s TV Shows
Time

I’ve been going down the 90s rabbit hole lately with music and TV shows. I remember getting married in the 90s and my wife and I watching Melrose Place, Caroline In The City, ER, Friends and other shows. Sadly many of these DVDs are out of print, and some of the shows are heavily edited for streaming purposes. Am I correct to say that there is no official release for Melrose Place that includes the original music?

Star Wars 50th Anniversary "Box Set" - wishful thinking
Time

Connor MacLeod said:

But that would go against the long tradition of Lucasfilm forcing you to double dip and buy the same content three or four times! For example, if you want all the bonus content for the OT you have to pick up the 2004 DVD box set for that bonus disc, then pick up the 2011 Complete Saga box set for the deleted scenes disc and documentaries disc, then the 2020 Disney 4K releases of each film for the new bonus content, etc. etc. Not to mention the From Star Wars to Jedi documentary that is stuck on VHS

Very true, and probably why my “wishful thinking” won’t happen. But, I’d really love to see a standalone box for each original movie with outtakes, a nice / detailed booklet, copies of the promo materials, etc. Rock bands have become notorious for this the past few years, and I really think this format would work for the OT. But, for all the reasons you said it probably won’t happen.

Preserving the...cringe...Star Wars Holiday Special (Released)
Time

Something new has surfaced that I think bears mentioning here: a partial recording of a Holiday Special broadcast from Hong Kong! It was posted on Internet Archive back in July, and purports to be the last 35 minutes of a Beta taping from RTV-2 in Hong Kong. This is the first mention I’ve ever seen of a confirmed Hong Kong broadcast, so pretty exciting! Title of the video over there is “Star Wars Holiday Special RTV-2 Hong Kong 1979 (Incomplete)”

Very cool, thanks for sharing this! Everything I’ve been able to research at this time points to this being aired on RTV-2 in Hong Kong on Saturday June 16, 1979! I’m about 90% - 95% certain of that date at this point, which is fascinating to me that it aired on TV 7+ months after the US “backlash”.

Star Wars 50th Anniversary "Box Set" - wishful thinking
Time

Today I was thinking about how so many classic music artists release “box sets” with previously unreleased demos, live recordings, etc. I think for the Star Wars 50th Anniversary we should get a Star Wars “video box set” with alternate takes of classic scenes, deleted scenes cleaned up, maybe video of table reads (if there is anything like that), and more video outtakes like that!! There must be tons of stuff that was filmed but never used / never released.

I know it’s wishful thinking, but IMO this would be awesome!!

Star Wars Celebration 2027 takes place in LA - from the Thursday 1st to Sunday 4th April; at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

I love the throw back feel the art has, but at the same time I have mixed feelings as it “feels” a bitt AI generated. Hope it’s not.

Thankfully it is not AI mate, it seems David Ball and Julien Rico Jr were the artists behind it - though a pity they weren’t credited when the artwork was released.

In my book… it kinds of makes sense, and is only fair, to credit the artists doing the work that is being promoted / used to promote content. 👍

I mistakenly thought it was a Matt Ferguson piece (who has done a lot of good work on Star Wars posters of late).

This is great to know, and I’m really happy to hear this!! Thanks!

Star Wars Fan Visits Dagobah Set at Elstree Studios (British TV 1980)

The blurb: ‘During filming of Star Wars: “The Empire Strikes Back”, the BBC made it possible for a very lucky viewer to visit the Dagobah set at Elstree Studios to meet Mark Hamill and R2D2. At the time of broadcast, no one had seen any excerpts of the “New” Star Wars film, so the mere mention of it in the TV listing guide guaranteed a whole nation of Star Wars fans eagerly tuning in to see the show.’

^ A quality story (and video) - I bet that kid still remembers it to this day. 👍

That was awesome, thanks for sharing that! I’ve never seen it before. What an incredible opportunity for that kid!!

In recent memory it’s really hard to beat “You didn’t kill Anakin Skywalker. I did.” Obi-Wan had its problems, but any scene with Darth Vader and Obi-Wan was perfect. I’d kill for more of those scenes

I just came here to say basically the exact same thing! I’ve watched that scene alone dozens and dozens of times. Everything about it was perfect IMO.

You guys DO know that whole scene and that specific dialogue was completely ripped and reenacted from the Ahsoka/Vader fight in Rebels right? It was eye rolling to see it happen word for word AGAIN in Kenobi and they’re both “cannon”. Just 100% unoriginal or creative.

Found it on you tube. Can’t believe I slept on this for many years, but I’ve always had a harder time getting into the cartoon series.

Clearly they are very similar scenes. I feel the Kenobi one is better done and more powerful, but maybe because (for me) that’s the “original”.

In any case, thanks for this heads up!!! I learned something tonght!

If I am being honest I did not know that. I never watched Rebels. Which season / episode in Rebels was that?

Star Wars Celebration 2027: 50th Anniversary - Los Angeles
Time

Today it was announced that Star Wars Celebration tickets are going on sale in a few weeks. Have any of you ever gone to a Celebration before? How hard is it to get 4 day tickets? Do they sell out “in an hour”? I’m sure this one will be tougher that the past, since it will be the 50th anniversary.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Are you a Star Wars fan who does not enjoy science fiction?
Time

JadedSkywalker said:

No. I love science fiction. I’ve put 300 hours just into Mass Effect Legendary edition, a videogame. and that and Kotor 1 and 2 literally thousands of hours. I have many vintage sci paperbacks. My laserdisc collection is a good chunk of science fiction. I have comic books, DVDS and blu-rays and 4K discs.

I’m more into Fantasy and Science Fiction, Manga and anime than I am into Superheroes. I’m kind of tired of Superhero and cape movies, would like more science fiction.

One genre I love which is basically dead is sword and planet. The Edgar Rice Burroughs kind of adventure. If they could do a modern spin on that minus the racism of the pulps I would be ecstatic.

The Flash Gordon Space Opera kind of thing, the swashbuckling adventure that the OT in places hewed to. But the prequels did not.

They also called that genre of Fantasy sword and sorcery and that was what Robert E Howard did in Conan short stores he wrote for the pulp magazines.

Tolkien was the other thing but I haven’t been into his work for a long time since I got sick of Hobbits because of the public’s interest in them and the Peter Jackson movies. I liked those books more when they were more obscure and for nerds. Suddenly they were important to normies like Star Wars would become under Disney, losing much of its appeal.
Like when we used to read comics and It wasn’t at all normal or cool, and there was no comic con. You didn’t have a bunch of grownups with arrested development, and who dressed up in cosplay. Comics were for children and teenagers.

You didn’t have an entire industry built up on nostalgia. The chasing the 1980s that pop culture does, that wasn’t anything but my childhood. Those were all new things. Movies. Now they endlessly recycle, remake things.

So different than me, but I love it!!

I am so excited that this is happening and that is less than a year away. I really hope we get to see some trailers and build up for this soon.

I’m predicting a trailer at the D23 expo, which runs from 14th August - 16th August.

Although there would be nothing really new to see that would still be exciting IMO.

Maul: Shadow Lord
Time

I hate to say it, but it is things like this that make me have a hard time with current Star Wars at times. IMO, when Darth Maul was cut in half in TPM he died. When he showed up at the end of the Solo movie I was like, huh. He’s dead.

Yes, I know they have “explained” how he survived, I just never buy it. A force ghost, such as Obi Wan, is very different in my mind then someone surviving being sliced in half. But, that’s just me.

I am glad for everyone who enjoys this, and I have heard from a few friends that it is “really good”. I wish I could get past the “he’s not actually dead” thought process.

Hmmmm…so many to chose from. Here are just a few of mine:

From my favorite band, KISS: Deuce, Black Diamond, Parasite, I Stole Your Love
My second favorite band, Weezer: Say It Ain’t So, Hero, King Of The World, You Gave Your Love To Me Softly

80s rock & pop: Summer of ‘69 (Bryan Adams), Purple Rain (Prince), Like A Prayer (Madonna), Livin’ On A Prayer (Bon Jovi), When You Close Your Eyes (Night Ranger)
90s rock & pop: Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana), Everlong (Foo Fighters), Sunday Morning (No Doubt), Only One (Goo Goo Dolls), Dying (Hole), Angel Standing By (Jewel)
00s rock and pop: Welcome To the Black Parade (My Chemical Romance), Caught In The Middle (Paramore), The Middle (Jimmy Eat World), You Can’t Win (Kelly Clarkson), I Miss The Misery (Halestorm)

I can go on and on and I limited my choices to one per artist. I’ve been to nearly 600 concerts from pop artists such as P!nk, Lady Gaga, Madonna, Prince, George Michael, and more to hard rock / heavy metal bands such as Black Sabbath, Metallica, Anthrax, Overkill, and others. And a range of artists in between the Sex Pistols and Hilary Duff. I just love music!

Preservation Project: "Bilder aus Amerika" - The Making of Return of the Jedi (1983) (Released)
Time

I stumbled on this tonight. Incredible. 40+ years I never knew about this! Thanks for preserving it!!!

The copy I found has two audio tracks, English and German (from Axes of Evil). The English track still has small parts in German, with no on screen English translation. No big deal, as this is great either way. However, am I reading right that there is a version that does have the on screen English subtitles?
