The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
I haven't been able to check this thread for a few weeks, so I don't even know if it was still needed, but I'm posting this anyway.
I'm terribly sorry, but I will not be able to finish a transcription of the Alex Williams phone conversation as I had offered. Between becoming ill and having to take on two jobs this summer, my time and energy are essentially exhausted at this point. I do apologize and I still hold enthusiasm for this project even if I can't be involved right now.
Thanks.

The Thief and the Cobbler: Recobbled Director's Cut (Released)
Time
I was watching the workprint and release version side by side again last night...

Something weird -- I noticed that the scene where Zig-Zag and Tack pass each other on the stairs, ("We'll see who wins at the end of the day") is not only horribly mangled by being squished into fullscreen (sigh), but...

I'd thought this was my imagination. It isn't. On the Miramax dvd, Zig-Zag clearly says "I'm taking *the* balls and leaving!", but in the workprint, he clearly says "I'm taking *my* balls and leaving."

Why...was this changed? Was it really worth the trouble? Is the most obvious joke really not the comparison to a "I'm taking my toys and going home!" sort of statement?

Even more interesting, on the Miramax dvd, if you listen closely to the echo while Zig-Zag is speaking, his echo still says "my".

Can anyone shed some light on this weird thing?

Og, you really might consider cutting the "It is written that the world which we see is an outward and visible dream of an inward and invisible reality"...

It's poetic, but abstract, and I don't think you're getting as much bang for your buck as you should be in a two-minute trailer. Also, you might try to snip out "harmony would yield to discord and..." to simply say "if the three golden balls were ever taken away, the city would fall to destruction and death." At any rate, you really need the "in the city" before "there dwelt a lowly shoemaker." It's a pretty painful sentence fragment otherwise.

I like the idea of using so much of the original narration, but for this movie deserves a trailer that shows off some of the amazing animation, which kind of needs big music.

Ahh, so it's Calvert's fault, not yours. *Grins*

Actually, I just popped in my Miramax DVD and I'd forgotten, but half the scene where Tack hammers his thumb was cut out anyway, so... I suppose there's nowhere to go but up even if the scenes are swapped 'round. So I suppose I forgive you.

But at any rate, I'm really excited to see what you've got! The clangity bangity pipe! Squeal!

Happy Birthday. ^ ^

My gosh, so much action going on and my hands are tied by this anatomy project I have to present tomorrow.

Anyway, while I have a minute --- are you actually going to switch the first two shots of Tack sleeping for the final cut? I wish you wouldn't ... it does create a big continuity problem, as his position changes quite a bit from the end of the first shot to the second, and he also picks up his hammer (it's laying on the floor in the first shot) and is holding it in the shot where the Thief walks in. It really DOES matter which order the scenes are in. Also, introducing his character with the thumb hit highlights his "cuteness" and the vulnerable aspect he starts out with, true, but the shot of him threading a needle works a lot better to introduce him as a *Cobbler* -- he isn't just a bumbling bumpkin. I dunno. I really like the scene the way it appears in the workprint, needle-threading first...and I'm in a pouty mood today anyway.

Meanwhile, have I mentioned how much I LOVE Zig-Zag's feet after he steps on that tack in the street?
Also, be sure to check them out when he says "And now, oh greatest of the great," in the Maiden from Mombasa scene. His right foot curls around the steps of King Nod's platform. Love that. I just thought I'd mention it....

Oh my gooosh...

I can't afford to get all twitterpateted right now.

I still haven't finished the Alex Williams phone conversation -- I've been insanely busy with school, finals coming up and all. I haven't given up. But it'll take me a bit longer.

And I so want to say that I can help organize materials for you, but... nnnngg....I really can't say that right now. Not until finals are over. Then we'll see.

Lovely interview, by the way. That's nice to see.

An ... entire...huge... box.

Let...Elly see...

You know... I remember the first time I read an article about The Thief and its unhappy fate, and the first time I went poking about online looking for information about it...everything I encountered led me to believe that there was really nothing left to be found from the early days of the film. I've got to say... it's really kind of beautiful, the kind of gorgeous stories and artwork that are kind of emerging from their hiding places now... a dorky observation, perhaps, but no less true.

*Giggles* Yeah, you know -- maybe you should start giving applications for a gardener or cook or someone to build you a house or something -- I think people might do it. Strike while the iron is hot, you know.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that your pitch session was somewhat nerve-wracking and all that. But you know, if you didn't catch a big break on this and attract a lot of interest, at least you've started and gotten some work done, so now you can build on that and show everyone what they were missing at a later point in time.

Anyway, thanks for that link -- now I can watch OR read up on the Thiefy Cobblery goodness. Score!

Got about seven minutes of the Alex Williams convo done... I'm really just picking at it slowly, and boy, will there be a lot of corrections to make... but it's a start.

So, let us know how your meeting with Mr. Wessel-Therhorn turns out.

My, my... script-type stuff? I want to see this stuff.
You know, when I watched the film as a kid, I was always really amused by the idea that Zig-Zag was a really lousy sorceror ... if he'd have done anything that was actually any good, I would have been a little disappointed, I think. Go figure. Now, though, I'd kind of like to see it, just to see it.

I will never understand why the scene of Yum Yum breaking her shoes was cut... It's cute and funny and gives her a lot more personality than any of the cookie-cutter sort of charactization they tried to give her in the released version... and that great bit of the Thief, too. Gah.

I can't talk about this right now. Grr.

And, it isn't really relevant, but I borrowed my daddy's dvd copy of Murder on the Orient Express and had a look at the opening sequence. There isn't any 'cartoon' animation; it's a montage of newspaper clippings, essentially, but I've always liked it, and now I know why, I guess. There is an odd little drawing in it, though - - wonder who did that?

Anyway, I've sent off the Roy Naisbitt phone convo -- I hope it's alright, for a start. But I've started imprinting this british accent, and it's showing up in my speech a little bit, now, and...I need some sleep. But after that I'll listen to the Alex Williams convo... if that's too hard to hear, well, I'll be happy to make it up on doing something else, if anything's needed.

More goodies! How exciting. I'm so anxious... And good luck with your animating projects. That's exciting too. ^ ^

And I've finished transcribing the Roy Naisbitt phone convo ... having spent all day on Google and IMDB and Wikipedia looking up words and names. I think I need my hearing tested. But anyway, I'll proofread it and clean it up tomorrow when I'm back from classes and then I'll email that over and take a look at the Alex Williams phone convo... although I don't know how well I'll be able to work with that, as it's considerably harder to hear. But we'll see.

Twist Ending
Time
What about movies that seem like they TRIED to have a twist ending, but the whole plot is painfully obvious, instead?

Liike...

High Crimes
aand...
The Thirteenth Floor

- - and in the case of the latter, I'm not referring to the plot device...the whole movie was a clone, I'm just referring to their "clever" ending.

The Thief and the Cobbler, the breakfast cereal! Delicious frosted whole-wheat Tacks, Z's, Hearts, Turbans and Scimitars, along with delicious golden marshmallows! It's part of this complete breakfast!

Just watch out for the fly-shaped pieces, they might 'steal' your appetite, haw haw!

Meanwhile, I'm wanting to listen to the clapperboard specials audio, but my dsl has decided it's going to pretend to be dial-up today, so... I'll just wait until it finishes, I guess.

Also, I've got the first twenty minutes of the Roy Naisbitt phone conversation done, and it's really interesting stuff. There are some names and such that I just can't figure out, though...Gosh, I'm so indignant right now, thinking of all the ideas Disney 'borrowed'.

And ...I have nothing useful to add.
