Info Wanted: Batman (60s tv series) - has any preserved them?
Time

There are actually two good quality complete sets floating around out there.

There's one called the "Studio Masters" set which was made directly from VHS tapes given to cast members of the 1989 Batman movie. The episodes are uncut, free of onscreen logos, and contain the "In Color" bumpers at the beginning of each episode as well as the "Next Week's Villian" bumpers before the end credits.

The other one is the "Canadian TV Land" set that was recorded from a marathon broadcast of uncut episodes a few years back. It sports superior picture quality over the "Studio Masters" set with a few very minor drawbacks. There are no "In Color" or "Next Week's Villian" promos and the "TV Land" logo is seen in the bottom right corner of the screen through most of each episode. Since it's CANADIAN TV Land, the logo is just that... a logo. Not like the one on TV Land in the US that's constantly animated and letting you know what show you're currently watching, what's on next, and what movie will be playing the following week.

Both sets are worthy of having until an official DVD set is released, but like Disney's "Song of the South" that may never happen.

This DVD is made from the HDTV broadcast a while back. It is NOT in 16x9 widescreen but it is widescreen, just full screen/letterboxed with awesome quality...

...Up next is Vibes in the exact same format. Hope it's helpful!

Oooohh... Will Vibes be letterboxed, too? Looks like great work there!!

Song Of The South - many projects, much info & discussion thread (Released)
Time
Hello all.

As much as I don't want to do this, I'll have to cut way back on my authoring participation of this project. This is mainly due to the fact of my son coming into the world, Lucas Skylar Wafford. (It kind of shifts your priorities, ya know?)

Doctor M seems to be doing tremendous work on a new feature encode and JoeyO's cover art (the orange one) looks like a great candidate for a new cover.

My idea was to have this release mimic in format the Disney Platinum Edition series and I have the following material to devote to Disc 2. Of course some items (like trailers) should fit on disc one.

STILLS
8 Animation
11 Concept Art
38 live action (promos and behind-the-scenes)
30 lobby cards and posters (foreign and domestic)
22 production artwork
16 home video releases
color enhanced animation background stills (for use as menu backgrounds?)

AUDIO
Over 3 hours of mp3 audio from the Song of the South 60th Anniversary program
(some of which could be used as menu music)
1946, '72, and '73 radio promos (mp3)
Tales of Uncle Remus record (mp3) (DVD-ROM content?)
6 SOTS midi files (DVD-ROM content?)

VIDEO
3 files totaling 10 minutes of on-set behind-the-scenes footage
All 4 SOTS Sing-Along-Songs
'72 trailer, '72 TV spot, '86 trailer
Disneyland 50th anniversary TV promo (featuring Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah)
Looping clip of Uncle Remus' chair next to a fireplace (Main Menu background?)

CLIPS FOR POSSIBLE USE AS EASTER EGGS and/or DVD-ROM CONTENT
1955 Rambler commercial featuring SOTS characters
SNL "Journey Into The Disney Vault" parody commercial
Fletch Lives "Zip-A-Dee-Do-Dah" clip
wmv format home video of entire Splash Mountain ride

So basically, I'm calling out to the editor/authorers out there who can put these discs together. Basic features that will be needed are:

Multi-level motion and still menus including music
Subtitles
Easter Eggs

In terms of layout, just take a look at the last three Disney Platinum releases. It's simple, but not boring.

Although I have to pull out of the authoring, I'd still like to share and discuss my ideas so we can make this the ultimate release of this great Disney film.

Please PM me if you have the software, drive, and ability to do this.

As long as you're working on a new full fledged NTSC release, I've got a lot of stuff that is waiting in the wings for such a thing. I have stills for concept art, production art, behind-the-scenes photos, theatrical release posters and lobby cards, trailers, Sing-Along-Songs, and more. About 1 GB worth. I'll PM you for your address as I'll have to snail-mail a disc. This is exciting!

Those DVD pictures show a transfer that has been around since at least since 2001 mastered from the Chinese laserdisc. Although this was the best DVD preservation available at the time, the Japanese NTSC laserdisc (with subtitles) and the recent BBC PAL broadcast look much better. This one is referred to as “Coal Black Easter Egg” version.

See Rikters June 29th post on page 4.

So, THAT's where it was...the Definitive Laser Disc set. Is there any other place that this is available at either commercially or preserved by someone here at originaltrilogy.com? I've got a cruddy quality mov or avi file I'm guessing..somewhere around, but I'd love to be able to get a high quality version of the entire extended music video.

Anyone?

It's on my Definitive Collection Extras disc.

POLL: So Who Bought Them & Who Didn't? (the 2006 GOUT DVD release)
Time
Bought 'em mainly for the Best Buy tin. Since the originals were from the 1993 masters, I can put away my Definitive Collection laserdiscs. Even though I didn't like having to buy the 2004 discs, I now have a DVD equivalent to the DC laserdiscs. I am going to modify the DVD covers to show the original versions as Disc One, and my own bonus discs as Disc Two. Since the movies are not anamorphic, I will consider this a "retro" collection as the laserdiscs weren't anamorphic either.

I'm considering double-disc slim cases for the original movies and my bonus discs, DC extras with the Holiday special, and to top it off, a single-slim case for When Star Wars Ruled The World. That makes 5 slim cases that I'm pretty sure will fit in the Best Buy tin, but I haven't checked yet.

Greedo is not the wimp, Han is
Time
In the original version and even in the rough cut of this scene, Han always shot first in order to defend himself from being killed right then and there. Greedo clearly tells Han that he's about to do it.

Rough cut dialogue -

Greedo: Jabba would rather have your ship.

Han: Over my dead body.

Greedo: (laughs) That is the idea, Solo. Now come outside with me... or must I finish it here?

Han: I don't think they'd like another killing in here.

Greedo: They'd hardly notice. Get up! ("I've been looking forward to this fior a long time" is not heard, but there is enough silence for this to have been added later.)

Han: Yes. I bet you have.

BANG!

Original Theatrical Version dialogue -

Greedo: You can tell Jabba. He may only take your ship.

Han: Over my dead body.

Greedo: That's the idea. I've been looking forward to this for a long time.

Han: Yes. I bet you have.

BANG!

What is the rarest video in your collection?
Time
I have the Japanese laserdisc and it is by far the best print available. It's just that those pesky subtitles during the songs can be distracting. I'm actually planning something special for SOTS, but I can only work on it during my limited free time so it may be some time before it's finished.

Of the 3 sources that are "readily" available, I'd rate the picture quality like this...

1. Japanese NTSC laserdisc
2. British PAL VHS
3. Chinese NTSC laserdisc

Howard The Duck - special edition (Released)

Actually, you can't tell this from these screencaps. Optical effects shots are often created in the actual aspect ratio of the film. Back To The Future is 1:85. The fullscreen version opens its mattes, but the optical effect shots are panned & scanned from a 1:85 image.

Does anyone out there have any other SOTS trailers besides the 1972 Television Trailer and the 1986 Theatrical Trailer seen on the “Coal Black Easter Egg” release? I'm pretty sure I saw a VHS tape quite a number of years ago that had the 1973 double feature trailer featuring SOTS and The Aristocats from a small public domain company called Amvest Video. I thought I had it, but cannot seem to locate it.
