One of the main, unified and most valid criticisms for Season 5 was definitely the never-ending conversation between Holly and Max right before their grand escape from the Mindscape.

This clip, titled ‘Not A Podcast Anymore’, attempts to resolve this issue. While the original scene runs for about six whole minutes, my version is around three minutes long, keeping only the necessary parts of the conversation that motivate Holly. In contrast to all the extractions, I added footage of Mike handing the DnD figure to Holly from Episode 1 to create a nice, touching moment. I also flipped the shots of Max running towards her portal, because, well… yes, they are not running towards the same direction, but they are not running towards opposite directions either.

The scene, which is the final scene of ‘The Wizard, the Cleric and the Fox’, ends with a close-up of Holly’s face instead of that weird shot of Max, since it is Holly’s story after all. After the screen cuts to black, we cut back to Holly waking up in Vecna’s liar in Dimension X, as a connection to the next instalment. There, you also get a glimpse of what I am working on with the colour correction of the Abyss. But more of that later.

In this clip, you can also see my attempt to recolor the scene to make it look more like the Mindscape in Season 4. The Mindscape scenes are a prime example of how this season varies from Season 4 in terms of production value, cinematography, and the overall look and feel of the show. Now, when a scene is shot — and, most importantly, lit — in a certain way, there are only a few things that filters and color grading can achieve. But I guess this is all I can do at least for now.

Hello, all! Welcome to what, by all accounts should be our last 2/22 update! (That actually makes me a little sad.)

The most exciting news is that I finally sat down and watched the entire edit start to finish - which, yes, was my first time doing so since the project began. And I have to say… I think it’s better than I ever would have predicted when I started all those years ago, let alone when I first saw the film in theatres. I think it really came together well!

However, true to form, I did make a list of some spots where I noticed things were a tad off - adjusting a color tint here, tweaking some EQ there, etc. I know I said last time that it would be around a month, but we’ve come this far; I want it to be as close to perfect as possible!

In addition, I’m building out those special features I promised. There’s so much I wanted to include in the commentary track, it’s been a bit of a bear editing it all down to time…

All that being said, I can’t keep delaying forever. It’s not fair to you, and it’s certainly not psychologically healthy for me. And so, I am going to announce a hard deadline of: May the Fourth. This is the first time I’m committing to an actual release date. Might even be earlier than that; but short of computer failure, I promise it won’t be later. Just a few more weeks!

Thanks to @JoyOfEditing for letting me use his VFX where he removed Jar Jar from this scene!

I’ve also removed the Battle Droid saying “D’oh!”; unfortunately the SFX-only track retained this dialogue, which meant that a full audio rebuild was required, in order to add in the correct SFX…for only a seconds of footage haha!

I plan to simply plug that component in, in small part due to that actor supplying a voice line for Ascendant. Also it’s a big moment of the movie so for a purist sort of alternate cut I think it’s good to retain. Also to tie into Kenobi (show).

I love the way you edited Obi-Wan and Anakin vs Dooku, it reminds me of “Dune: Part Two”. By the way, I also love the Droid Factory scene, even though, I wish you kept the scene where Obi-Wan talks with Dooku.
I will use some of your ideas to my own cut(When I have time).
And I agree with you, AOTC is great if it’s reedited.

Early on when I was breaking down which scenes I was gonna keep and which scenes I was gonna toss for Attack of the Clones, I took a long look at the Obi-Wan and Count Dooku scene, but just couldn’t find a way to use it, based on the way I reworked AotC as a whole. If you reinsert the Padme scene where she addresses the senate, the natural bookend to that scene is the other deleted scene where she’s interrogated by Dooku. My two cents is that the Padme Addresses the Senate Scene is ESSENTIAL to the plot of Attack of the Clones. It improves the sense of so many other sequences. In order to get the Obi-Wan and Count Dooku scene to work, you’d need an entirely different version of AotC to the one we got (and a totally different RotS). I think I’m with you, that that theoretical version of AotC would probably be a lot better, but at the end of the day, I’ve gotta work with the footage George gave us.

Yeah, sad that George only fixed this stuff about Dooku in The Clone Wars series.

I was just thinking about this movie again for some reason and had some ideas.

One of the biggest issues with the structure of the film IMO is that Rey goes to Palpatine after getting a pep-talk with Luke. Before this meeting, Rey feels like she’s on a dark path, but after this there’s no chance that she will take Palpatine up on any offer. Now, I’d already considered just deleting the Luke ghost meeting since it’s so worthless and actively deflates the stakes, but that would have resulted in too many continuity problems. So what if instead of Rey going to meet Luke, it is Kylo?

Imagine: After Kylo has his talk with Han and throws away his lightsaber, he takes an advanced TIE Interceptor from the Death Star wreckage to Luke’s island, where he intends to stay and atone for his sins in isolation. He burns his ship and stands there before it. Just use Rey standing in front of the burning ship and replace it with an image of Kylo from behind. Then we can have Luke’s voice appear to him, saying ‘Ben.’ Then Ben can say ‘She’s gone.’

Cut to Poe beside Leia’s bed wondering how she was able to win, and Lando telling him that they had each other.

The music of that scene segues into a scene in Luke’s hut, where Ben pulls the rock out of the wall and reveals Leia’s saber. Luke tells him about his mother and how she believed that someone would complete her journey. Ben, off screen, says how he’s not worthy to wield it, and that he doesn’t have what it takes. Luke replies that he has everything he needs.

We next combine the scenes of D-O and of R2 getting a strange message from an old X-wing. Finn and Poe assume that this is Rey leading them to Exegol, but in fact it’s Ben in the X-wing.

Cut any shot of Rey in the X-wing, replacing them with shots of Kylo’s TIE fighter from the first scenes of the film when necessary. Rey arrives believing herself unworthy of the mission, ready only to take her revenge on Palpatine.

Palpatine says that Rey wants to kill him, and asks her ‘As a Jedi?’ She says yes, and he says 'No…your hatred…your anger…you want to kill me." And then in his mind, he continues “…That is what I want.” This unspoken thought echoes in Ben’s head as he races into the temple. Palpatine says to Rey “Kill me…” Then to Ben: “…and my spirit will pass into her. As all the Sith live in me…” then to Rey: “You will be Empress…” and then Ben hears in his head “…we will be one.”

Then later, to Rey, he says: “She will strike me down…” Then to Ben “…and pledge herself as a Sith.”

Palpatine is doing this gloating as a way of telling Ben that he has won, thinking that there is nothing Ben can do to stop him. But he doesn’t reckon with Ben and Rey’s connection in the Force.

In the scene where Ben fights the Knights of Ren, we see in one shot that he has Leia’s lightsaber on his belt but he doesn’t use it. He refuses to use Leia’s weapon, still believing that he is unworthy of it. Then he connects with Rey and together they agree to swap sabers. Rey drops Luke’s saber behind her back and Ben pulls it across space like in the film, then we see Leia’s saber already in Rey’s hand as she fights off the guards.

Then when Rey leaves Exegol at the end of the film, she’s in Luke’s X-wing for the first time.

Anyway, that’s quite a bit of work, but considering what we’re able to accomplish these days with editing, I don’t think it’s an impossible task by any means.
