Rumor - Star Wars: 2022 High Republic Era
Time

I’m definitely interested but not what I would do.

I prefer to go forward, not back. If they want to go back, go so far back that no one alive has any immediate bearing on the events we already know. Don’t be afraid to distance yourself from established characters.

Rian Johnson’s idea of a Star Wars trilogy completely separate from everything we know is the best idea I’ve heard. I hope he eventually get to make it.

Sidebar: Adjusting for Inflation is a pretty terrible metric, not only because the math is pretty clunky and imprecise, but because it also doesn’t account for a large number of competitive factors that contribute to attendance levels fluctuating yearly. It’s a big problem with box-office analysis/discussion in general - the decision to not measure by tickets sold is a built-in failing, but also completely unavoidable at this point due to how marketing-friendly the dollars-earned number was and still is.

Adjusting for Inflation doesn’t level a playing field so much as it just redistributes the lumps according to an overly simplistic formula.

A more accurate way to acknowledge historical context would probably be to measure the distance between how much each movie made compared to how much the average film in its release year made. That way you’re effectively comparing how much more popular each Star Wars film was than the other films that came out in that release year.

Yes, adjusted for inflation has a lot of flaws. It gets worse the farther apart the eras you are comparing are. I still thought it was interesting, so I posted it.

I think it’s also interesting to compare Star Wars and the MCU.

Domestic Box Office Totals Star Wars + MCU

The Force Awakens - $936,662,225
Avengers: Endgame - $858,373,000
Black Panther - $700,059,566
Avengers: Infinity War - $678,815,482
The Avengers - $623,357,910
The Last Jedi - 620,181,382
Rogue One - $532,177,324
The Rise of Skywalker - $478,169,690 (still in theaters)
Avengers: Age of Ultron - $459,005,868
Captain Marvel - $426,829,839
Iron Man 3 - $408,992,272
Captain America: Civil War - $408,084,349
Spider-Man: Far From Home - $390,532,085
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 - $389,813,101
Spider-Man: Homecoming - $334,201,140
Guardians of the Galaxy - $333,172,112
Iron Man - $318,604,126
Thor: Ragnarok - $315,058,289
Iron Man 2 - $312,433,331
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $259,746,958
Doctor Strange - $232,641,920
Ant-Man and the Wasp - $216,648,740
Solo - $213,767,512
Thor: The Dark World - $206,362,140
Thor - $181,030,624
Ant-Man - $180,202,163
Captain America: The First Avenger - $176,654,505
The Incredible Hulk - $134,806,913

I find reviews and box office numbers fascinating. It’s like a sports fan following scores and statistics. In the end, I still like what I like regardless.

Star Wars adjusted for inflation:

Star Wars - $1,497,057,186
The Force Awakens - $1,006,872,847
The Empire Strikes Back - $880,005,730
Return of the Jedi - $847,248,129
The Phantom Menace - $822,741,783
The Last Jedi - $628,253,896
Rogue One - $556,450,789
Revenge of the Sith - $540,446,942
Attack of the Clones - $487,136,844
The Rise of Skywalker - $478,169,690 (still in theaters)
Solo - $213,767,512

Doesn’t seem like the sequels are any more cause for alarm than the prequels. TRoS should pass AotC soon. The prequel and sequel trilogies seem to each have an entry that exceeds expectations and another that falls below expectations. The first movies appear to perform the best. Solo seems to be the only real outlier and I liked Solo very much.

Just my opinion, but DrDre’s method does indeed seem accurate for predicting the opening based on the level of interest at that time. But interest can fluctuate greatly depending on how well the movie is received. Had the movie been better reviewed by critics and/or audiences, the total box office could have been a lot higher, just as if it had worse reviews it could have been lower. I think word of mouth is more powerful than early interest, but that is of course just my perception. I don’t have any data beyond anecdotal observations.

I loved The Rise of Skywalker. I am surprised it didn’t make more. Everyone has an idea why it didn’t and everyone seems sure they’re right. There’s probably a little truth in almost all of the theories.

I do not think Star Wars as a brand is in any kind of trouble though. These movies still did very well. In a few years there will inevitably be another set of movies. I imagine people will continue to be interested in the directors, cast, trailers, and such. Maybe those will have more universal and critical appeal. I imagine a lot of thought will be put into it. I’m interested to see exactly what Project Luminous is all about.

Until then, I can’t wait to see more of the Disney+ live action and animated series. It’s a great time to be a Star Wars fan.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Those special effects George doesn’t like won awards. So did the editing. The arrogance of erasing someone else’s award winning work from history is infuriating to me. In the 90’s I was excited at the idea of the Special Editions, and I would likely be more accepting of them now if not for the suppression of the originals. It’s more about that suppression than it is whatever tinkering is done. That’s why I say Star Wars must go back to being about more than George Lucas.

You can’t like the version you like if it doesn’t exist anymore.

The Rise of Skywalker box office results: predictions and expectations
Time

The Rise of Skywaker is already #3 for 2019. Can it get to #2? China is such a huge part of the worldwide box office, and Star Wars isn’t popular there at all, it probably wont get very high on the worldwide list at all. The Force Awakens had a large worldwide total but that was thanks to its enormous domestic take where it is still #1 all time over Endgame.

Current top domestic box office for 2019:

  1. Avengers: Endgame - $858,373,000
  2. The Lion King - $543,638,043
  3. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - $450,796,441
  4. Frozen II - $449,876,364
  5. Toy Story 4 - $434,038,008
  6. Captain Marvel - $426,829,839
  7. Spider-Man: Far From Home - $390,532,085
  8. Aladdin - $355,559,216
  9. Joker - $333,494,002
  10. Jumanji: The Next Level - $236,206,405

Current top worldwide box office for 2019:

  1. Avengers: Endgame - $2,797,800,564
  2. The Lion King - $1,656,313,097
  3. Frozen II - $1,325,176,364
  4. Spider-Man: Far From Home - $1,131,927,996
  5. Captain Marvel - $1,129,729,839
  6. Toy Story 4 - $1,073,394,813
  7. Joker - $1,060,470,910
  8. Aladdin - $1,050,959,216
  9. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker - $918,796,441
  10. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw - $760,330,285

No doubt about it, The Rise of Skywalker definitely made less than I thought it would. After I saw it, I knew some wouldn’t like it, but I still thought it would do better than it did. Not that it’s the disaster some are making it out to be. Did they want more? Of course. They want to make Endgame numbers every time, that’s always the goal. I’m sure they are happy owning the majority of the top movies of 2019.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

Hey now, don’t dream it’s over.

The better colors of the Disney+ versions have made me more interested in the 4K Skywalker Saga than I was before. It used to be Unaltered or nothing, but I suppose I’ve softened too. But dreaming of a proper release is something I’ll never stop doing. I never thought I’d see a release of multiple versions of Blade Runner because it’s not a movie the mainstream cares much about. The same with Brazil. But we have both of those. It seems unlikely right now, but not impossible that the Original Trilogy could eventually get a similar release.

Save the Rebellion. Save the dream.

Star Wars fans are largely collectors. I will just keep collecting the best versions I can get and dreaming of the best possible scenario.

Technically, I have access to everything I need right now. I can see the unaltered versions whenever I want, and they look great. The main issue for me is the history being rewritten. I want those original effects restored for posterity. I want them readily available not just for people who already want them, but for people to discover who are unaware.

The truth is (not) out there.

4K restoration on Star Wars
Time

I’m glad JJ shed some light on things and let us know to not be expecting the unaltered versions on this 4K release, but I sure wish someone would elaborate on the " for reasons he just doesn’t understand, it isn’t possible."

How can that be anything other than Lucas? Is it some legality involved in the sale of Lucasfilm? Some sort of agreement to honor his wishes? They aren’t oblivious to the situation. Just tell us like it is and be done with it.
