Well, the color and contrast look amazing already!

However, I did notice some quite noticeable light streaking on the far right side of the frame almost throughout the entire sample:

Is this present on the film or did it get introduced in the scanning process?

These artifacts are not part of the film print and were introduced by the acquisition device, in this case a DSLR camera.

It is called “CMOS SMEARING” and it happens on very bright areas of a CMOS captured image.

Some cameras are better than others but in this case it’s pretty bad unfortunately.

Discussion: Star Wars Toy Millenium Falcon Motion Control
Time

Had fun with my motion control rig over the christmas break and shot some old school miniature motion control effects using a $20 Revell SnapTite Millennium Falcon.

The Revell Snaptite toy is 8.25 inches in length.

All elements are 100 percent real! No CGI. Did a bit of weathering paint job, added LED lighting and 3 mounting points to the toy and he was looking pretty good. Also added real 35mm scratches and grain scanned with my 35mm scanner.

Even though the current Dynamic Perception motion control software is limited to 2 keyframes - not allowing advanced motion control moves, the results are very interesting. Pretty amazing to be able to pull off one man crew shots like this in an afternoon when it would take days and dozen of people in the early 1980s. Their new software coming up will have unlimited keyframes - can’t wait for that.

4K 35mm Scanner available for preservationists.

Can you offer any details about your setup and services? It’s always great to see like-minded folks working together for a common cause.

😃

I am not offering services per say / for monetization. Basically offering to help if any preservationists need help scanning 35mm prints.

My setup is homebrewed - using a modified Moviola for film transport. Imaging is done through RED DRAGON 6K camera, triggered for each individual frame. I get very nice scans, sharp and very wide dynamic range.

My system is gentle on the film.

Team Negative1

Question - it appears you scanned 4K.

Are your scans 4K scope or did you scan 2K and once de squeezed you get 4K?

I just finished my 35mm scanner and I get 4K scope scans, other question, do you de squeeze the scope frame and then scale down to 1080 or do you scale down to 1080 and then de squeeze ? just curious about your workflow.

Forgive me if this idea has been discussed before but here's what I think.

Why not put out a raw source (by raw I mean grain, scratches, uncropped, un-stabilized, no sound synchro - even LOG source if that's how it was captured) @ a good bitrate MP4, pieced together from the best reels and let people work on their own versions?

No need for 4K, could be 1080 or 2K to make the sources acceptable for sharing.

Kind of a Star Wars open source project.

Check your media player. VLC is bloated, but works fine for most people. Mplayer might be a good alternative.

Media Player Classic is the better choice for PC Users.

Team Negative1

I hear sound using VLC but not with the default quicktime player on Mac.

It's really not a biggie but maybe for the future releases to make sure the mp4 has a compatible audio codec for both platforms.

..and great job on those cleanups!

The scene changes occur on what are called glue frames or splices.

"Strips of footage would be hand cut and attached together with tape and then later in time, glue"

So it is glue, and partially at times, part of the next frame.

After each one, the next scene change would be spliced to it, in this case, the next shot is this:

===================================

A cleaned up version:

================

Alternate frame:

==============

So just think about how this cleanup has to be done, at times after every scene. That is why cropping it off, will be the best way to preserve the original shot.

Team Negative1

Be careful guys with clipping the blacks. You are crushing shadow detail a little bit. Great work as usual though and thanks for doing this.

I found a version on Torrent in 720P but it appears to be a re-encode... I noticed a pulsating red orb in the middle of the screen in most dark scenes. Mostly visible during space sequences.

Is this orb in the Team Negative1 release as well?

See screenshot, I have increased the brightness so you can see the orb better.
