To all of you that are fortunate to have the X0 or X9, what are the chances of having laserdiscs transferred from you guys? I'd like to have my Definitives captured to disc from an X0 or X9 source. I would just like to have each side of the LD's transferred to a disc (no need in editing them together or do anything else to them.... just interested in getting the raw data to disc). If I shipped a brand new set of the LD's to someone, would anyone be willing to transfer? I'd gladly pay for the time and materials it would take to do this. If anyone would be willing to do this, please let me know (email: rickwj324@juno.com).
Thanks!

I think NIN said it great. I haven't used the players you mention but will give you my impressions of the X9. My first LD player was a Pioneer Elite CLD52, which was not very good. I then moved up to a brand new Elite CLD 79, which was much better. I used it with a Pioneer Elite 53" HDTV. I connected the 79 to the elite via a composite cable as the Elite HDTV has the same comb filter that is used in the X9, which tells you how good the X9's was since it's still used in the Elite CRT's and the Mits Diamond sets. The image quality was great.
However, once I found that Lucas was serious about not releasing the original versions of Star Wars, I set out for a better LD player. I ended up with the X9 and had a new laser, motor, belts, etc put in and had it adjusted by the best LD tech in the U.S., Duncan Hunter of www.laserdiscservice.com. I then hooked it up to the HDTV via S-video and put in a copy of the Faces version of Star Wars into both the CLD79 and the X9 at the same time. The difference was immediately noticeable from the opening crawl. Much better color, black levels, sharper image, and less noise. The 79, while a great player, just didn't compare.
I'd still love to see the X0. I thought about getting one of them but they are scarce, very heavy (it cost enough just to ship the X9 at 40lbs, let alone the X0 at 80!), and the single side only play kills it for me. For purposes of capturing for the project it should be great as I used to read it had better noise levels than the X9 due to it's design differences. The X9 relied on digital noise reduction while the X0 was designed for low noise without the need for DNR.

Master all three programs and you will have a very powerful package in your arsenal.
I have not yet compared sega's SC ROTJ to my US discs, but I should be doing some caps on my player tonight and have something to show you tomarrow.
Also, look for our newest article to be up within the next hour.

Yes Zion... the Adobe package is quite nice! I don't use Premiere (that's primarily for capturing, right?). The project I've done so far has consisted of this:
1) Laserdisc connected to Sony RDR-GX7 set top recorder. Once video is captured to dvd, I rip the entire contents to the computer. I have several commercial apps that I use for editing and joining videos. This allows for totally seamless attaching of the multiple sides of the discs. Once I have a single video file perfectly edited I create timelines within Encore. Separate timelines for the actual movie, and other timelines for each supplemental file (bonus features, etc.).
2) Once I have the footage in Encore, I proceed to create custom menu's. This is where you can get really creative since Encore allows you to edit within the other Adobe apps (Photoshop is used quite a bit for the menus). I've created very nice motion menu's, including full chapter search menus with animated icons, sounds, etc. Also allows creating Easter eggs, multiple audio stream, subtitles, and lots more. ****When I wrote my last post and was corrected for my statement about it being BETTER than DVDLab, this is what I was talking about. DVDLab is a decent app, but it's not even in the same league as Adobe Encore and the other Adobe apps! DVD Lab is more user friendly, but once you know Encore in-and-out it is a great program!!
My last set of SW dvd's were decent: I was working with a Definitive LD set and a lower-end Pioneer player. I just bought a brand new Definitive set (still shrinkwrapped) and tonight I just purchased a Pioneer Elite CDL-79 player (it is in MINT condition and was purchased from a film producer's estate in West Hollywood). This is supposedly one of the best Pioneer players (with the exception of the CLD-99 and the infamous Japanese players: S9, X9, and X0) I'm also now going to be working completely with Dual layer discs to allow for better picture quality (Ritek Dual Layer Printable dvd's).
So... that's my project that I'm working on. I plan on sharing updates with OT.COM when I have something to post. I'd like to one day have my name added to the list of projects out there. Obviously mine won't compare to the X0 project, but I plan on putting out some great quality stuff.
And yes, the 1st version of Encore was buggy, but 1.5 fixed sooo many issues and is a very stable program. I had the first version as well.

If anyone wants a full-sized copy (3240x2175) drop me an email and I'll email it. I have two versions (1 silver and 1 gold). Specify which one you want in the email. I printed mine on FOIL paper and it looks amazing!!! I highly recommend the use of foil paper for quality projects.

I also just bought another Definitive Set of laserdiscs SEALED and will be using those instead of the used set that I currently have. I may be selling my used Definitive Set and my FACES set soon. I'll post them here first in case someone is looking for them.
As for menu's and DVD authoring, I've been using the Adobe suite for quite some time (Encore and Photoshop... I recently got After Effects, but haven't really used it). These programs are so much better than apps like DVD LAB (which I also have). I'm working on some really nice motion menu's right now (they look great!!).
Once I've made some progress with my latest conversions, I'll look into sharing them here. This project will also be on Dual Layered discs instead of the single layer that my last project was on.
Zion.... I'd really like to contibute to your restoration. I don't use Paypal since I was ripped off from them a while ago. If there are other means of contributing (including mailing monetary support directly to you) just let me know.

Also, there was mention of Monster Squad here. I have the Fullscreen laserdisc and will be converting to DVD soon. I'll gladly "share the wealth" once I'm done.
Someone on here was looking for Meet the Feebles and Brain Dead. BOTH of these have been released on DVD and shouldn't be hard to find. I got both of these quite a while ago.....

Hey Dark Jedi... just turned my PM's on! I can drop TROOPS in the mail to ya in the next few days. I loaned out the 2 Batman discs, so I'll have to wait and get them back before making any copies of that one.
Drop me a PM with your address and I'll get Troops out to ya asap.

Another cool "fan made" film that was also released as a magazine dvd is Batman: DEAD END. This is the movie with Batman/Joker/Alien/Predator. The full dvd was released (WIDESCREEN) with a magazine called MovieFX Video Magazine. The behind the scenes "Making Of" was included in the following month's magazine. (I have them both!)

I have this DVD (definitely the best of the bunch!). I recently converted it to R1 NTSC so that I could play it on all of my dvd players (some I have are region free and some aren't). I did an exact rip to a Dual Layer dvd. It is an EXACT copy, identical to the Hong Kong disc in EVERY way (menu's, movie, etc, etc). The Dual Layer dvd is also a printable surface, allowing me to put a nice print job on top.
I highly recommend this version (especially if you are a completist of the ED films). If anyone has something interesting to trade for a copy, let me know.
