The last time you saw one of the Star Wars films
Time
I always pop in my pretty darn good Moth3r PAL DVD's in my player from time to time, especially when I just want to kick back and relax (and enjoy some nostalgia), in fact I just watched Empire (my favorite) two days ago and loved every bloody minute of the unaltered goodness. I've got the prequels on DVD but I hardly ever watch them and if I were to make any sort of sequence out of the movies it would be III, IV, V and VI, but preferably just the good old OOT.

Luke's rope-throwing talents in EP4
Time
Thanks for the input on this fellas. I knew there was something more to it than just a simple dream. I'm pretty sure that I saw this scene when Star Wars was broadcast on TV here in Iceland back around in the late eighties or so I think. This scene is so vividly planted in my mind and I hadn't even heard of, or read the novel back then. So now all that remains is to actually find that footage. I think I have this old recording of Star Wars from the TV somewhere, so I'm gonna check that out and see if I can see Luke missing with that rope of his. Wish me luck, cause that is gonna be one hard to find tape. Ain't even sure it still exists...

Blade Runner Finally Gets It's Due
Time
I've been waiting for this Special Edition since the birth of DVD. I bought the pretty decent barebones release when it came out and althought that kept me going, I've really been drooling over the prospect of a multi version DVD edition featuring the theatrical, director's and final cut. Plus ofcourse loads and loads of bonus material. Can't bloody wait to pick this up when it comes out. It's might not be christmas in Star Wars land, but in Blade Runner land it most surely is.

The Official Lucasfilm Response
Time
No problem Neil, I've already changed it.

Anyway, I got my response from Lucasfilm just moments ago and I then sent this back to them:

"Having seen Lucasfilm's response to the outcry of fans around the world I am deeply saddened by the blatant and uncompromising response. Us fans have given George Lucas the money and therefore the artistic freedom he needed through all those years. We grew up with those movies and love them so dearly. And now he can't give us what we want, where's the respect and gratitude for what we've done for him? Are you just going to turn your back on us? I always say, what goes around, comes around. So naturally if this decision is not reconsidered then you'll have lost at least one true Star Wars fan. You wouldn't be getting any more support from me. That's a fact.

We are not expecting Lucasfilm to do a bigger than life frame by frame restoration like was done for the Special Editions, but rather simply do a relatively simple transfer from the best possible film elements available so as to preserve the movies as they were, totally unaltered. This could give us the anamorphic transfer that we so desperately want. This would not mean huge expenses for Lucasfilm. And were this to happen it would definitely mean huge sales, since every true fan out there would want to own the movies which changed the face of cinema forever in it's original state. This is an important part of cinema history and SHOULD be preserved. I think it's wrong of Lucas to want to bury these versions which made him what he is today.

Please reconsider this decision. The fans outcry and frustration will only get bigger and stronger if Lucas continues to ignore the importance of the original unaltered trilogy."

- That's pretty blatant. But I don't believe it for a minute. That kind of decision, to restore them and release is purely based on money. If there's not enough money in it, they won't release it, but if they see a definite demand for it, then they'll do some kind of restoration and release it. Lucas has no desire at all to give his fans what they really want, it's ALL about the greens for him, even after all those years of us supporting him and his creativity. The man is dictated by two things; money and digital wizardry, when he should be dictating them. He's lost his creative vision and he's in the process of ruining those movies. What a shame.

Convert letterbox -----> anamorphic
Time
Moth3r's anamorphic PAL trilogy transfers look absolutely amazing. There's so much detail and clarity. It's unbelievable he just blew up the letterbox image, but after seeing that I'm convinced great things can be done for this september release as far as anamorphic encoding is concerned. The source image should also be a little bit sharper and have better colours than the laserdisc so all in all, if Lucas decides not to release the OUT again in better form (which I suspect), then this might just suffice... just might.

Convert letterbox -----> anamorphic

So will we see a new dawn of "DVD to DVD" fan transfers instead of the good old "Laserdisc to DVD" transfers. Who will be able to produce the best looking anamorphic DVD? And maybe we will also see some variations in the sound department, with some people using the uncompressed PCM laserdisc audio instead of what LFL is offering. And to think that Lucas could easily have put an end to this bootleggin' with a decent anamorphic release. Silly little man he is. Can't see the big picture. Just wants a chance to spite his most loyal fans and make his 2004 crap look better. I guess he's afraid of the comparison if the OUT were also given a restoration like the 2004 editions, but without all the special edtion nonsense. So he has to make them look as shitty as possible.

Also, one thing I've noticed with the advertising campaign for the OUT is that all of a sudden Lucas is very proud of the fact Han shot first and makes t-shirts out of it. It's suddenly so cool. A little while back he was defending his digital alteration tooth and nail. Oh, how the greens make people suddenly change their minds, eh?

HOLD ON a second...
Time
Any halfwit would save the original source for both the fullscreen and letterbox transfers. So there should be a pretty high resolution source to work with here (don't really know if it was digital or not). If it was high enough resolution to make a fullscreen transfer, then the original widescreen information should be in there also and voila, they could make an anamorphic transfer for us. But, and this is the big BUT, that's if they actually are halfwits and didn't save the original source for those transfers.

That's a very good point. I hadn't thought of that. You're absolutely right - to get a decent looking fullscreen pan & scan version, you would have to take it from a better source than the letterbox 2.35:1 transfer, that's for sure. I refuse to believe LFL would just blow up the letterbox image for the fullscreen, it puzzles the mind how they would do that and get away with it. But the thing is, that there were ofcourse fullscreen VHS releases of the THX remastered trilogy and now the question is did they preserve that transfer meant for the fullscreen, or did they just throw it away after they transferred it to fullscreen. Many unanswered questions here.

But then again I think it's just not down to whether LFL has the film elements necessary for a anamorphic DVD, it's down to the fact that Lucas most probably is using this to bate us fans by releasing a crap version of the OUT and a remastered and shiny version of his "definitive vision" to make the difference really noticeable. Then he goes on and says: "Nobody wanted to buy the originals, so people prefer my "definitive vision" of it". What a load of crap that is. And he might just get away with it. The man has to be stopped.

Make your voices heard! (again) - re the 2006 GOUT DVD being in letterbox format
Time
I've sent my letter to George Lucas, Jim Ward and the Publicity department. I sure hope we can make a difference like we did with this site. Our voices will be heard. Please fellow Star Wars fans, send your letters also to any of the e-mails provided earlier in this thread. We have to get as many fans in on this as possible.

Hey folks,

I did some web browsing and came across this information regarding Lucasfilm, with the address, phone number and... E-MAILS! I think those are correct and working. So get to it people, make your voices heard. But please be polite and straight to the point, it will get us much further than some whiny insulting complaining e-mails.

New DVDs NOT 16x9
Time
This is pathetic on behalf of LFL! This clearly show Lucas has no intention of doing this the right way. He WANTS these editions to look bad, so that it makes his precious Super Special Editions look better in comparison. We're basically getting laserdisc transfers here so I wonder if we also get all the "shakies" present in the transfer. With "shakies" I'm referring to how the background elements move about a lot during most scenes. A good example is during the Obi/Vader fight in EP4 when the walls are literally coming to life. This has always bugged the hell out of me when looking at those laserdisc transfers. If this is indeed present and they are non-anamorphic as digitalbits reports, then I sure as hell won't buy this piece of crud. And how can they then slap the THX approval stamp on this!? I'm disgusted by how Lucas treats us. Finally when I thought he was coming around, he pulls this. To hell with him!

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
These are some lazy ass photshop covers. Is there no quality control at LFL? Are their graphic designers totally incompetent amateurs? Looks like it to me. Back when the movies were released on VHS and Laserdisc we actually had some excellent cover artwork like the ultra cool "Faces" covers and the black/gold Definitive Edition Laserdisc covers and let's not forget the original poster artwork covers which are beautful works of art. It's a real shame no one at LFL realises that using those was an option, not those crummy overly colorful photoshop hack jobs. After all these original editions are aimed at a much higher age group than the 2004 editions (which are clearly aimed at young kids), so they should be more adult in style. I for one will be taking that "bonus disc" out of this package and making my own cover artwork. Lucas should have more respect for the movies that made him what he is and for us who watched his movies and made him all that fortune. God damn it he's so clueless! And he just has a bunch of these "yes people" around him who don't dare to say anything negative about his little project of ruining this movie phenomenon.

ITS HAPPENED-- OOT AVAILABLE FROM LUCASFILM
Time
I can't bloody believe this, I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn't sleeping or if this was an april fools joke. I can't belive Lucas finally caved in. After all this time of cursing and swearing, loathing the man - he gives us what we want. It' crazy! This better be some quality work though, not some shabby rushjob to make a quick buck, no sirebob. If Lucasfilm does that, then I'm sure good old Jay here will start a new website to force Lucas into doing us right again. Anyway massive respect to Jay for all his efforts, this site has played a HUGE part in us finally getting what we so desperately NEED. Cheers m8!

AT LONG LAST, THE OOT IN DVD QUALITY - WITH HAN SOLO SHOOTING FIRST, NO FECKIN JABBA, NO LAME CGI, THE GOOD OLD EWOK SONG, NO HAYDEN HEAD ON ANAKIN, NO "ALERT MY STARDESTROYER...CRAP" AND ALL THAT SHIT. I'M SO RELIEFED. BRING ON SEPTEMBER. (although one has to be quick to pick up this new release because it will like the original of E.T. only be available for a limited time, holy cowabunga!)

Arnie, did you sort out those line drops in your captures, that we saw in Moth3r's A New Hope?

Also, could you give me the pros and cons of your captures in your opinion? What can you improve, what are you most annoyed/happy about etc.

Also2, do you notice a definite drop in sharpness from EP4 & EP5 to EP6? Is the original laserdisc slightly more blurry?

Also3,... nah just kidding. I'm not that craaaaaaaaazy!

I think the golden rule about projects such as yours is that it's vital to play it on a few different sets of equipment, different TV's and DVD players. Then you get a good feeling where your project is at quality wise. I look forward to other users on here doing comparisons once they get it at myspleen.net

Arnie, weren't you also gonna do a special OT project where you apply your own filters, brightness settings etc to juice things up a little?

~French Coffret Trilogie LD to DVD transfer~ (Released)
Time
I noticed on Moth3r's EP IV that there are occasionally bright white lines across the screen. This happens a number of times troughout the film. Have you encountered that same problem on your capture Arnie? Is this because of laser rot or something else? And also, have you encountered any other audio/video bugs on your laserdiscs?

Also if Moth3r plans to do a V.2 (fingers crossed!) and fix some of the bugs of V.1 than I defo think he should take you up on that audio offer. I think it's important to have the best possible sound with the best possible picture. Having seen the quality of Moth3r's work, I'm actually pretty certain that if Lucas never releases the OOT on DVD (which is think is very likely), I will be quite happy with the PAL laserdisc to DVD transfers, because the quality is definitely there. It's just a matter of bringing it out more, enhancing the qualities and decreasing the faults. Anyways, keep up the good work fellas!
