I want to bump this thread to bring another edit to the attention of the editor that reminded me of this one:
https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/Return-of-the-Jedi-Radical-Re-Edit-Released/id/15435

In the radical re-edit, there are 2 versions, with one containing a subplot with Boba Fett. I just saw the subplot involving Boba, and it may be useful to incorporate brief aspects into your edit as Boba is also in Endor going after Luke, Han, and the rebels. However, the footage used was from a fan film, and therefore not exactly the best.

If you do decide to incorporate portions of the fan film, then it likely would need to be cleaned up. I think the portion that fits your edit is about 25 seconds with Vader giving the orders to get Luke and Han.

One way or another, your edit seems like a monumental task, and I commend you for giving it a shot. Whenever it is released, it will definitely be something special.

I also note, while I do not personally consider it a big deal, the words “death star” are used a few times throughout the movie. You did mention having Vader say starkiller base instead. In other references, do you intend to replace the words, trim them out, or leave just leave it alone?

  1. I will definitely be looking into this radical edit, as it seems very interesting.
  2. As for the term “death star,” aside from Vader, the only people who call it the Death Star are rebels. Jerjerrod and Palpatine just refer to it as the “battle station” or “station.” I will probably just leave it alone for the rebels, as I reasoned that they wouldn’t know the official name of the station and just called it the Death Star.

I am looking forward to this edit much like your Return of the Jedi edit. As I look through the list of 80 edits, I find myself looking forward to nearly all of them. I do legitimately like what you are intending to do with nearly all of it.

I do have some questions/concerns:

  1. When looking at the planet titles, I do have a personal bias in that I did like them as I am not good with names, and it helps me identify where we are. I know those titles are inconsistent with other Star Wars movies, but it does help me prevent getting the locations twisted in my head. This is obviously not the biggest deal in the world.

  2. As for the deepfake, will you also deepfake Leia at the end? In other Rogue One edits, Tarkin and Leia look very realistic. Are you making your own version?

  3. I am curious as to your logic from removing Vanee from the movie. I liked his presence and getting to see Vader in the bacta tank. I thought it humanized him for a bit right before he intimidated Krennic.

  4. This is not much of a concern, but as far as I know you are the only editor who will give Vader a younger James Earl Jones voice. It obviously was not his fault that his voice sounded a lot older considering in real time there was about 40 years between the release of A New Hope and Rogue One.

  5. Towards the end of the movie, does it fit adding in Vader’s command to “increase firepower?” In the movie, Tarkin states he will command the Death Star and Vader will focus on going directly after the rebels and the plans beamed on the ship. It also seems a bit odd to increase power on a weapon that blows up planets.

I will say, I actually do like the line inserted into the movie. Nothing wrong with giving Vader more dialogue. I do have mixed feelings about this though.

In terms of other possible edit ideas, there are some from the Hal9000 edit of Rogue One that I thought worked well when I watched his. These are his words:

  • “Removed showing the audience Cassian’s instructions to kill Galen Erso. By removing this conversation as well as its reiteration in a later scene, it adds weight to Jyn’s comment about trust going both ways and keeps the audience in Jyn’s perspective.”

  • “ Trimmed Bohdi’s hesitation in assigning the new makeshift crew a callsign when pulling away from the Rebel base.”

  • “ Modified R2-D2’s red/blue light to match its style of appearance in ANH (FX by Burbin)
Removed Jyn’s line to Krennic, “You know who I am,” as he appeared sincerely not to.”

Regarding R2D2, I see you mentioned making him more noticeable, which likely makes this edit idea redundant anyway.

Best of luck with this. Your edit of this movie certainly appears like it would be my favorite one when it is all done. I felt some of the other edits of the movie were very aggressive cutting out various entire scene. Based on your words, I enjoyed the movie as much as you did.

  1. The title cards are more personal preference. I could keep them, I could remove them.

  2. About Leia’s cameo, I never disliked the original CGI version, but I could probably edit it a little bit.

  3. The reason I removed Vanee is because “Rogue One” isn’t about the Jedi or Sith, and I feel Vader should be like his “A New Hope” version: an Imperial with the force. Plus, I never liked how Vanee looked.

  4. As for Vader’s voice, I’m going to try to at least edit James Earl Jones’ original dialogue.

5. Vader is referring to the firepower of the Devastator, not the Death Star.

  1. About removing the scene between Draven and Cassian, I think the suspense of knowing that Cassian needs to kill Galen works better than learning with Jyn about the task given to Cassian.

  2. I feel like Bodhi had an awkward personality, and he was not used to how the Rebel Alliance works. Personally, I enjoyed the realistic hesitation.

  3. I might remove Jyn’s line to Krennic, as I honestly never really liked it.

Rogue One Fan Edit
Time

Personally, I absolutely love “Rogue One”! It is my second favorite Star Wars movie (after “A New Hope”) and I believe that “Rogue One” is the third best Star Wars film (after “The Empire Strikes Back” and “A New Hope,” respectively.) I am currently in the process of making a fan edit of “Return of the Jedi”, but I also want to dabble in a “Rogue One” edit, as the changes in this edit are a lot more minor than the changes to “Return of the Jedi”. With that out of the way, this is my edit for “Rogue One”.

FULL CHANGELIST

  1. Added the Disney+ intro between the LucasFilm logo and “A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…”
  2. Color correction more closely match the look of “Andor” and “ANH:R.”
  3. Relit several scenes, particularly the Kafrene, Yavin 4, and Jedha scenes.
  4. Redid all of the subtitles.
  5. Added a planet title for Lah’mu.
  6. Altered the death trooper subtitle so it reads: “DEATHTROOPER: Understood.”
  7. When Jyn looks out from the hatch, added smoke coming from the distance.
  8. Altered the title card to a different image.
  9. Added sun flares around Jedha.
  10. Inserted a wipe between the scenes with Bodhi and Two Tubes and Jyn’s rescue, respectively.
  11. Removed the shot that separates K-2SO’s lines, “Congratulations…” and “Please…”
  12. Added a wipe between Jyn’s rescue and the arrival at Yavin 4.
  13. As Jyn is led across the Yavin 4 hangar, added the exterior of the base outside the entrance.
  14. Moved the Tarkin and Krennic scene in between the interrogation scene and the Saw and Bodhi scene.
  15. Added a wipe between the interrogation scene and the Tarkin and Krennic scene.
  16. Gave Krennic four code cylinders, not two.
  17. Added a beat during Tarkin’s line between “…Krennic” and “After.”
  18. Deepfaked Tarkin.
  19. Recolored Saw’s base to more closely resemble the shots from the trailers.
  20. Moved the Saw and Bodhi scene in between Tarkin and Krennic and the leaving for Jedha scenes.
  21. Added a shot of Saw as Bodhi is taken away by the Partisans.
  22. Added a wipe between the Saw and Bodhi scene and the leaving for Jedha scene.
  23. Reduced the orange shades on Yavin 4 to make the place greener and more vibrant.
  24. When Jyn and Cassian pass by R2, made the latter more noticeable and made him beep as well.
  25. Made it appear that Draven and Cassian were further away when the they converse.
  26. When Jyn looks out onto Jedha, added NaJedha in the distance.
  27. Recolored Bor Gullet and enhanced how he looks.
  28. Added a title card for Jedha City.
  29. Removed Dr. Evazuan and Ponda Baba’s cameos.
  30. Removed the shot of Jyn during K-2SO’s lines, “…in” and “You’re…”
  31. When Chirrut says, “Let them pass in peace,” for the first time, made it echo.
  32. Made the reveal that Baze shot down the stormtroopers slower to be more dramatic.
  33. Made the Death Star appear larger when placed beside Jedha.
  34. Added a beat between Tarkin’s smirk and Krennic’s assertion that they stand amidst his achievement.
  35. Added a wipe between the Krennic leaves the Death Star scene and the rebel arrival at Eadu scene.
  36. Removed the green on the binoculars to more closely resemble how they looked on Jedha.
  37. Replaced the alarm that goes off at the Eadu base with the klaxon Imperial alarm.
  38. Added a title card for Mustafar.
  39. Added a title card for Fortress Vader.
  40. Removed Vaneé, as well as the scene where he goes to Vader in his bacta tank.
  41. Altered Vader’s voice so that he sounds younger and more akin to how he sounds in “A New Hope”.
  42. Added a wipe between the Fortress Vader scene and the Alliance High Command scene.
  43. Added droids pursuing around Yavin 4 as Jyn and Cassian approach the Imperial ship.
  44. Altered Wedge’s vocal cameo so that he is more clearly identifiable.
  45. Added the Imperial alarm throughout all scenes inside the security complex.
  46. Removed the “For Jedha,” battle cry.
  47. Linger on Melshi’s corpse for a few extra moments.
  48. Removed the shot of Shollan reacting to the transmission of the plans.
  49. Added Vader’s line from “Part VI” of “Obi-Wan Kenobi”, that being, “Increase firepower.”
  50. Removed Scarif from the shot when the Tantive IV goes into hyperspace.
  51. Altered the cast roll-up to be as followed:

I do want to start off by saying that nothing I say is a personal attack. I really like that you are trying to make something unique and different. I like that creativity and willingness to take the risk. I am really looking forward to this edit.

Also, some questions: what quality will this work be in? Any information about visual enhancements?

I am personally a proponent of the Hayden force ghost because I would have no idea that Shaw is Anakin Skywalker if I saw the original movie and never bothered to look him up. I could not recognize him in the movie with all the makeup on him after the mask was removed. That ghost would look like some random guy.

Your other edits have me very intrigued. The obvious one is the Vader “no.” Most people find it completely unnecessary.

On to the actual changes - I really like dumping the Death Star for pretty much anything else. I found it awkward that the Empire would build another Death Star after the failure of the first one (this was just sloppy writing for the movie). This is a welcome addition.

I like adding the deleted scenes you mentioned. I may have missed it, but would also consider adding the deleted scene where Luke constructs his lightsaber.

I think it is good to reduce all aspects involving Jabba shenanigans. I was not a fan of it in the movie. I thought it took too long and was very cringeworthy. Same can be said for the Ewoks. Less is more.

Changing some characters in the movie is interesting, but I would need to see the movie to determine how I feel. I also think it is a bit risky expanding the role of Boba Fett. He is a bounty hunter and expanding his role to be a key person fighting for the empire could be misplaced. If you use him like this, then perhaps some background as to why he is effectively now a soldier for the empire versus a hired gun. I do like that you are attempting to expand his role. Your version of Boba surviving also makes a lot more sense than the Disney version of it.

As for the ending, I do like all the planets celebrating because it really hits that a galactic empire was defeated rather than have a small group celebrate on one planet. We all have different views on this.

You could also consider removing the Leia line to Luke where she always “knew” she was his sister. It was over the top in my opinion. There was another fan edit that apparently incorporated lines from Battlefront between Luke and Boba.

I am editing to clarify whether you rearranged Luke on Dagobah before going to rescue Han?

  1. About the force ghost of Anakin: while I understand that Sebastian Shaw might not be instantly recognizable as Anakin, this edit is meant to be watched after Episode IV and V only (yes, I know Mas Amedda is in the film, but you don’t need to watch the prequels to notice Mas Amedda and kind of understand who he is). Furthermore, Hayden’s Anakin looks kind of confused, as Hayden himself admitted that he did not know where the footage would be used when he filmed it.

  2. Vader’s “Nooo!” is completely removed. It’s very unnecessary, though I do think the “Return of the Jedi” version is much better than the one in “Revenge of the Sith.”

  3. While I do like the scene in which Luke constructs his lightsaber, I feel it ruins the experience of the film since it isn’t a surprise when R2 flings Luke’s lightsaber from the sail barge to the skiff. It also wouldn’t make sense since Tatooine takes place after Dagobah, where Luke probably would have built his lightsaber.

  4. To be honest, the Ewoks never bothered me. I honestly prefer them to the idea of having Wookies on Endor. However, some of their shenanigans could be cut, like the one where they throw rocks at the stormtroopers, which causes them to fall down. I did remove the Leia meeting Wicket scene, but that was more because it ruined the pacing of the film.

  5. Regarding Fett’s expanded role, I was thinking of having Vader address him as “bounty hunter” when he and now General Veers bring Luke to Vader, but I’m still debating that. To think about it, that one line does give some slight context as to why Fett is with the Empire and shows that he is still a bounty hunter (until he kills Bib Fortuna in the post-credits scene.)

  6. The reason I got rid of the planets celebrating is because a) the visuals, to me at least, look very dated, b) I really dislike the “Wesa free” moment, and c) I don’t think we need to see the galaxy celebrating the death of the Emperor, since that would not necessarily mean that the Galactic Civil War is over.

  7. Yeah, I could probably remove Leia’s line. Personally, I have never had any major issues, but yeah, I could probably remove that line and be happy with the change.

  8. And yes, the Dagobah scenes take place before the Tatooine stuff. However, during the Dagobah stuff, I removed everything after Luke says “Leia’s my sister!” to keep it more mysterious.

I feel like there should be two edits: One with Sebastian Shaw and one with Hayden Christensen. I am a Hayden Christensen guy, so I just feel like we should have both options.

The only problem with having Hayden Christensen is that I don’t want my edit to rely on the prequel trilogy. Yes, Mas Amedda, a prequels character, is in this edit, but you don’t need the prequels to explain who he is. If you only watched this with ANH and TESB, you’d assume Mas Amedda is just another advisor who happens to look different from the others. With prequels Anakin, it wouldn’t make as much sense. Plus, I really disliked the addition of Hayden to ROTJ, since during Revenge of the Sith, he was not a true Jedi; he only became a true Jedi when he died. For any prequel references, I want them to be minor and so that they can be understood by people who have not watched the prequels. Like Saw Gerrera in Rogue One, you don’t need to know everything he did in the Clone Wars to understand who Saw is.

Maybe replace 3PO’s retelling of the trilogy with him translating for the Ewok chief, who could be telling the story how the Ewok fled from Had Abbadon to Endor.
Obviously it would have to fit with the available footage of the Ewoks and I think you should add some more details to the story, otherwise it might feel too tacked on and fan-edit-y.

Maybe Had Abbadon was the home to ancient Sith and the Jedi helped the Ewok relocate or sth, but I’ll let you figure the details to that story on your own 😉

That’s honestly a very good idea, the whole Ewoks lived on Had Abbadon were kicked out by the Empire! Obviously, it is a bit difficult, but the good thing about having C-3PO say the dialogue is that lips moving isn’t an issue. And it would more sense as to why Leia reacts like she’s listening to a story she’s never heard/lived in.

Your list of alterations sounds quite unique!

One question though:
“When the hologram appears, Boba Fett points his blaster at it.”
Why would Fett (or any other character) point their blaster at a hologram? Holograms are not living, breathing entities, and should pose no threat to anyone inside Jabba’s Palace.

Aside from that, I’d also love to see some preview clips, as the VFX changes you’re wanting to do are very interesting!

That is a good point. I mostly just added that because I removed the Wookiee tradeoff scene and wanted to establish Boba Fett being the movie more. However, looking at it logically, it could probably be removed. It doesn’t add anything, and Boba Fett was already shown.

After an extensive number of viewings of the original trilogy, “Return of the Jedi” definitely feels, by far, to be the weakest film of the three (and no, I don’t think it is because of the ewoks). I don’t think the film is bad by any means; it has some of the best moments in the entire saga: Vader’s redemption (without the added “Noooo!”), the finale space battle, anything Luke, Vader, or the Emperor do, and the introduction of many iconic characters, such as Admiral Ackbar, Nien Numb, Mon Mothma, Jabba the Hutt (before 1997), Wicket, and Bib Fortuna. However, the film suffers from pacing issues, character issues (especially with Han Solo), and many horrible special edition additions. In a way, “Return of the Jedi” tries to do what “A New Hope” did successfully but fails at it. The best example is the Tatooine sequences in both films. “A New Hope” manages to take what would be a very boring sequence and make it interesting, while “Return of the Jedi” gets very repetitive and boring. The movie does get better in the second act, but compared to the Death Star rescue in “A New Hope” and the separate journeys of the heroes in “The Empire Strikes Back,” “Return of the Jedi” feels lackluster. Despite this, I will give credit to “Return of the Jedi” for its third act, which is by far the best part of the movie. With all that in mind, these are proposed edits for “Return of the Jedi,” while still keeping the story manageable to be edited and not rewritten.

OVERALL

  1. Redid the subtitles.
  2. Complete color correction on sets and characters.
  3. Added atmospheres to all the planets and moons.
  4. Added a sun to Endor.
  5. Replaced the image of Endor.
  6. Enhanced the TIE Fighters.
  7. Made the Aurebesh whenever it appears actually legible.
  8. Gave Endicott the rank insignia plaque of a lieutenant.
  9. Gave Imperials different rank insignia plaques.
  10. Added a force field effect to the multiple entrances to the Death Star hangar.
  11. Enhanced the lighting in the Death Star hangar.

  14. Recolored the desert scenes to resemble how they appeared in “Star Wars: Battlefront.”
  15. Enhanced the red/blue and yellow/green switching light on R2-D2.
  16. Made R2-D2’s beeps match the other films.
  17. Redid all blaster bolts.
  18. Redid all lightsabers.
  19. Gave the Falcon’s engine a bluish hue.
  20. Enhanced how the entering and exiting of hyperspace looks.
  21. Made Shuttle Tydirium a Zeta-class Heavy Cargo Shuttle.
  22. Made Endor more closely resemble how it looked in “The Rise of Skywalker.”
  23. Fixed the Ewok’s eyes.
  24. Enhanced the Emperor’s eyes.
  25. Redubbed Lieutenant Endicott so that his voice matches how it was in the first scene.
  26. Removed the instances where Vader’s helmet is dusty and has finger marks on it.

OPENING CRAWL

  1. Changed the crawl.

Luke Skywalker has returned to his home
planet of Tatooine in an attempt to rescue
his friend Han Solo from the clutches of
the vile gangster Jabba the Hutt.

Little does Luke know that the
GALACTIC EMPIRE has secretly begun
construction on a new armored space
station even more powerful than the
first dreaded Death Star.

When completed, this ultimate weapon will
spell certain doom for the brave Rebel Alliance
struggling to restore freedom to the galaxy…

OPENING SCENE

  1. Replaced the opening Star Destroyer with the Executor.
  2. Per the last edit, changed the underbelly of the Star Destroyer to that of the Executor’s.
  3. When the docking bay officer presses a button, made his hand gloved like in other shots.
  4. Lowered Vader’s Lambda-class shuttle as it enters said Death Star hangar.
  5. Changed Endicott’s lie to, “Inform the commander that shuttle has arrived.”
  6. Removed the docking bay officer’s line, “Sir.”
  7. Per the last edit, used the shot with the removed line to cover up the cut part of Endicott’s line.
  8. Fixed the shots where Vader’s helmet is out of focus.
  9. Made Jerjerrod’s lip stagnant when Vader says, “…motivate them.”
  10. Enhanced the shot of Vader and Moff Jerjerrod parting ways.

JABBA’S PALACE

  1. Altered the background during the wide shot of C-3PO and R2-D2 walking in the desert.
  2. Added a new exterior image of Jabba’s palace when C-3PO and R2-D2 walk towards it.
  3. Removed the Special Edition’s zoom on Jabba’s palace’s gate.
  4. Made the creature that growls at C-3PO’s mouth move when it growls.
  5. Enhanced Luke’s hologram.
  6. Removed the shaky cam when the camera tilts from Jabba onto Salacious Crumb.
  7. In the same shot, made the bubbles in Jabba’s hookah pipe go upward like in other shots.

  9. Per the last edit, removed the corresponding shots of C-3PO and R2-D2.
  10. Made it so the flaming hot poker actually hits the GNK droid’s feet.
  11. Removed C-3PO’s squeal as he is taken away by the Gamorreans.
  12. Removed Dengar and Bossk.
  13. Restored Lapti Nek.
  14. Per the last edit, some shots during Lapti Nek have been moved around and reorganized. For example, the shot of Jabba dancing is moved for continuity reasons and replaced by another shot.
  15. Kept the shots of Oola in the rancor pit.
  16. Removed the subtitles for Boush a.k.a. Leia and Jabba during the scene when they haggle for the bounty on Chewie so that the audience can only comprehend the situation based off of C-3PO.
  17. Altered the exaggerated gasps when Boush a.k.a. Leia pulls out the thermal denotator.
  18. Per the last edit, removed the shot of Max Rebo cowering in fright.
  19. Removed the instances where we see Boba Fett flirt.
  20. Fixed the mirrored shots of Boba Fett.
  21. Removed the snippet where Lando follows Chewie, then pulls down his mask.
  22. Removed the frogish creature outside Jabba’s palace.
  23. During the same shot, replaced the image of Jabba’s palace.
  24. Removed the shots of Han’s hands being unfrozen and him subsequently keeling over.
  25. Made it be Boba Fett who holds C-3PO’s mouth shot when Jabba confronts Han and Leia.
  26. Per the last edit, removed Boba Fett from the throng of thugs behind the captured pair.

  5. Removed Maliki, the rancor keeper, and his scene.
  6. Removed the banthas shot.
  7. Added sun flares around the Khetanna.
  8. Enhanced the lightning under the skiffs and Khetanna.
  9. Removed Luke and Han’s conversation while on the skiff.
  10. Restored the original 1983 sarlaac.
  11. Made Han call Jabba a “slimly son of a bitch” instead of “piece of worm-ridden filth.”
  12. Per the last edit, removed Han’s “Right?” line, as well as Chewie’s reaction to it.
  13. During the “Luke stares at everyone” shots, inserted Boba Fett running up onto the Khetanna
deck, which replaces the reaction shot of Han staring around, eyes flinched, as if he were lost.
  14. Per the last edit, added Boba Fett in shots accordingly so as not to have continuity errors.
  15. Sped up when R2-D2 launches Luke’s lightsaber and when Luke catches it.
  16. In the same shot, added blaster bolts, as if Boba Fett were trying to shoot the lightsaber.
  17. Made it so Luke’s lightsaber actually hits the thugs it slashes.
  18. Per the last edit, added burn marks to the thugs Luke’s lightsaber slashes.
  19. Removed Luke’s line, “Easy, Chewie.”
  20. Removed the black gloves Lando wears in some shots.
  21. Enhanced Boba Fett using his jetpack.
  22. Altered Boba Fett’s voice whenever he grunts or speaks to better match Jason Wingreen’s voice.
