Description

The Sonic Movie Trilogy (2020-2024) is quite unwatchable due to decisions by Ben Schwartz and other editors to add
distracting, unamusing, or obnoxious dialog during post-production. This project aims to restore the original vision of the live action Sonic Trilogy before the project was sabotaged.

Changes

All distracting or overly sappy dialogs were removed, while all plot points are retained. The credit vocal songs (which had nothing to do with Sonic games or movies) have been replaced with actual remixes of sonic game music. I added four remixes to each movie from the corresponding Sonic game. Sonic 3 2024 included remixes from both Sonic 3 game and Sonic and Knuckles.

I do blame Ben Schwartz for nearly all the jokes he came up with. I don’t think they were just ‘bad’ or ‘annoying’; The decisions Schwartz and others made in all 3 movies during post-production also ruined the continuity. In post, they should have cast a normal ‘child voice’ actor like they did with Tails who was voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Aside from distracting dialog, he portrayed the main character as a sarcastic adult rather than an orphaned child from another planet. I’ll remind everyone that Sonic was a child in the first movie, and that none of his commentary should be ‘Family guy’ style pop references. It should be something a child says. Moreover, Sonic shouldn’t behave as if someone is laughing at his jokes all day if he literally had zero friends on Earth. This isn’t the only movie I blame someone for ruining in Post Production. In my edit of Final Fantasy the Spirits Within, I make that case as well.

Removals

Much of the Sonic sardonic commentary dialogue (voiced by Ben Schwartz) has been removed.
Some dialog of Knuckles, Tales, has been removed.
Nearly all dialogue and scenes with Wade and Rachel were removed.
Many sappy family scenes were removed.

Ninja Scroll: Minor Damage

A FanEdit featuring additional songs from Ninja Gaiden OST (Xbox)

Description

Ninja Scroll is a classic with few flaws, but one of them is how women are portrayed loaded with stereotypical
character flaws. This contrasts with how the men are established as honorable and righteous for better or worse.
This edit aims to reduce the imbalance by cutting the excessively dramatic dialog between
Jubei and Kagero, as well as Zakuro and Yurimaru.
For the protagonists, this reduction highlights their friendship and downplays
Kagero’s need to fulfill a life debt by doing it with Jubei.
For the antagonists, the dramatic scenes which were removed
were not essential to establishing and predicting Zakuro’s betrayal of Yurimaru.
Additionally, the rape scenes were removed, and the amount of blood shown was reduced.

Strategy

I use a minimalist approach with the following rules:

1. Cut all scenes that include excessive human behavior - yelling, screaming, being nasty to each-other, when such behavior has little or nothing to do with the plot.
2. Reduce gore scenes to around a second or less, so the audience doesn’t have to ‘sit there and take it’

I cut scenes on the transition frame and then mix the audio between the recombined video. Sometimes a scene is too difficult to cut on the transition frame as the audio may overlap the next shot. In this case, I decouple the audio and video and re-arrange the scene as necessary to get the result I’m looking for. With this trick, I can change who is talking to whom and reduce the tension that exists in many movie dialog scenes.

Synopsis

My wife and I love this movie, but it’s quite unwatchable in its current format. We wanted a cut that we could watch without having to turn away or fast-forward through sequences. We also felt, as did many SH fans, that we don’t need a scene explaining all the clues in the movie to us. It’s a better movie if it leaves the viewer to figure out what happened on their own—just like the games did.

Other Sources

Songs from Silent Hill 1 PC OST were used for some sequences adding or replacing the original soundtrack audio. A SH1 2002 remix called ‘Nay Tomorrow’ by Tamimi was used towards the end of the movie

Editing Details

I use KDENLive for all edits. The edit files are available if you’d like to open one of my edits, make changes, or re-render in higher def. I tend to cut between scenes on the switching frame, which allows scenes to be stitched together easier by leaving more room on the wings

Cuts & Additions

This version cuts nearly all gross/gory/sexist sequences from the movie. Much of the narration dialog by Jodelle Ferland was removed along with her poorly acted Alessa sequences. Cybil’s death sequence is slightly shortened. Christabella’s death is removed (I’d rather not ever see some of these scenes again, ever).

Final Fantasy The Spirits Within (2001) - Phantom Menace Edition

Description

I was looking forward to this movie when it came out, as I imagine many people in Japan were as well. I have yet to meet anyone who didn’t agree that much of the acting by Baldwin, Buscemi, and Ming-Na Wen was distracting, nevertheless director Hironobu Sakaguchi insisted that he would not change one scene and so far no edits of this movie have ever come out. To make things worse, the Blu-Ray edition of the Japan Release (Spiritual Edition) was never released.

Changes

In this cut, all distracting or poorly acted scenes have been removed. The rare Japanese track is included as a 2nd audio option. The Final Fantasy remix “A Temple of Chaos” By Tim Sheehy was added. The credits song Spirit Dreams Inside was replaced with the Final Fantasy IV remix “Hymn to the Crystals” by RebeccaETripp. The title scene was moved from the first scene to after the intro sequence, since this is more traditional for Final Fantasy stories.

Final Fantasy The Phantom Menace

My copy of FFTSW Spiritual Edition is legit and I can prove it.

Within the 2nd day of posting my fan-edits I got perm-banned from the r/fan-edits sub-reddit, and they won’t let me appeal in ModMail. I was accused of pirating my copy of Final Fantasy The Spirits Within either the Spiritual Edition DVD, or the BluRay. They never specified any details, nor asked me for proof - which is required for them to do according to their rules. I can prove my copies weren’t pirated. In fact I bought a copy of the Spiritual Edition DVD from Ebay for $60 specifically to make this fan-edit, and in accordance with the rules. The deletion of my Sonic Trilogy edit was so blatant I had to wonder if they admins were doing the bidding of the hecklers, since they followed the heckler’s extreme interpretation of racism in Hollywood movies as some kind of conspiracy theory. But this ban over piracy without asking me for a copy or checking with me at all is more than blatant - it’s systematic. We need to do more to protect the fan editors.
