Ranking the Star Wars films
Time

My Updated Ranking

 1. Attack of the Clones: This has been hated on by many, but has always held a special place in my heart. The Coruscant Chase, Jango freaking Fett, the Arena… this is everything that Star Wars represents.

 2. The Phantom Menace: Although the politics are confusing and boring, the set pieces are top notch with the Podrace and Maul duel. Young Anakin is annoying, but Jar Jar is hilarious.

 3. Revenge of the Sith: By far the most “epic” of the Star Wars movies, although I think it goes a bit try-hard at times. There is a great story but hard to squeeze in perfectly, leading to certain moments like that boring opera.

 4. Solo: This is a fine movie. I don’t have any problems with it, but I just can’t place it as high as the holy PT. Where’s the Jedi?

 5. The Last Jedi: I am divided on this movie. I love the Canto Bight subplot which adds some real nuance to the war. But then there is the cringe worthy Rey/Kylo scenes. Also, why didn’t Poe just listen to Holdo?

 6. Rogue One: Basically the Star Wars forgettable Marvel movie. A solid first two acts starring likeable characters, but it all falls apart with that lame third act. Darth Vader becomes the star jeez. What is so special about Darth anyways?

 7. Return of the Jedi: Looking back, I can see Lucas is on the right track. But the OT is still boring. As the first I “don’t like”, ROTJ wastes time with a contrived Luke/Vader plot. Why couldn’t we have a guerrila warfare story with the Ewoks?

 8. The Force Awakens: A ripoff of an even worse movie, the only things that saves this cash grab is the effects.

 9. A New Hope: Why do people like this movie? Luke is a whiny brat who suddenly gets everything he ever wanted. Leia never gets her time to shine. Han is an asshole who is treated a hero? At least the special edition made him more likeable; poor Greedo. I simply don’t understand the love for this movie.

 10. The Empire Strikes Back: Ugh. The only one I flat out despise, this is a true slog. Want to watch a Battle on Hoth? Gotta wait to see Luke’s Wanpa shenanigans. Want to learn from an epic Jedi Master? Instead you’ll get an alien who talks backwards because why not. Want to have a conclusion to your darn story? Nope watch the next cash grab. Argh, the prequels were so much better than the originals.

Oh, and one last thing:

April Fools.

That is (sadly) true. I have a friend who I think might be subconsciously sexist. He’s not a bad person by any means. But when Captain Marvel came out he dismissed the movie without seeing it because it was “SJW”.

I think this whole anti-SJW movement is leaning people to hiding their actual sexism, which is a shame.

At the same time we should remember not everyone who opposes the term “SJW” are sexist. For example, I think Rey is a Mary Sue but not Wonder Woman or Captain Marvel.

Which one of the Star Wars Movies was made WITHOUT the fans in mind?
Time

I believe the PT was the unrestrained vision of Lucas. He could do whatever and he wanted- and all you have to do it watch those documentaries to find no one questioned him.

The Disney films are a mixed bag, with TFA / RO clearly made for the fans and it (for the most part) working.

TLJ, on the other hand, is an exception seeing Rian Johnson leaving his mark on SW. for better or worse… as so many still debate.

Solo is a mixed bag. The concept of a Solo spinoff is so clearly an appeal to the fandom. It’s a tad insulting. But they completely missed their mark, because no one asked for such a spinoff. Then we have Lord and Miller who I predict added most the original stuff. But they were fired, and Ron Howard just made the most Star Wars movie they could do. TLDR: Made for the fans, but with a poor understanding of the fans. With a few new scenes.

Here’s where I get banned.😃

I would argue that SW 77 was made for the “fans”.

ANH was development hell. No one believed in this crazy idea Lucas was pitching. The Studio was against George forcing him to continuously rewrite the script to appeal to the “general audience”… aka the fans.

Empire was less so. Kurtz is still present but everyone has confidence in George. It’s a success and they move to ROTJ.

Jedi is questionable. Although George gained power, he was turned off his by child and wanted to wrap it all up. I would say on an equal level as empire… but for the wrong lopsided reasons.

I’ve never been a fan of how Luke lifted the lightsaber- but only for an instant. And Ben just happens to make up and happens to misinterpret the situation.

I completely see it’s logic: it totally could happen irl. It is the best way to write Ben’s turn, as you want Luke to be guilty but still a hero. But the entire thing feels so contrived.

I honestly don’t know any other way to write that scene besides having Ben’s turn not take place in his bedroom, but some other place with other variables. I am just saying what I feel from the whole explanation.

Holds no ill will

The First Order has attempted to directly kill Rey and friends multiple times. They also just destroyed a solar system. Sure he’s acting friendly but that doesn’t excuse his actions. Kylo Ren is clearly unstable… so the last thing you want to do is give him a weapon.

While Obi-Wan and Rey may have different reasons for withholding their weapons both a perfectly valid. In fact Rey is more valid, as Anakin doesn’t care about his saber.

Weirdest Star Wars Spinoff Idea
Time

OK… Here goes nothing…

Ever since watching Into the Spiderverse I have been obsessed with the concept of a multiverse and how it could be used by other franchises- namely Star Wars and the MCU. I wouldn’t be afraid to go crazy, though this may turn some of you off for how I “disrespect” the original saga:

Warning: this contains a lot of fan favorite characters so it might be best to make into an animated spinoff.

A couple years after ROTJ, Jedi Master Luke finds Palaptine’s hidden vault. Inside is a strange portal… to what they call The World Between Worlds.

The Alternative Timeline
IMG

Our Luke awakens to find himself trapped in a parallel universe…

A world where Anakin Skywalker struck down Chancellor Palaptine rather than Mace Windu

Windu thanks Anakin for saving his life, but shortly after Anakin realizes Windu is leaning towards the dark side. It turns out anyone with unlimited power turns rotten eventually. When he confronts him about it things turn aggressive and they walk away political enemies.

Windu declares Palaptine a byproduct of a corrupt Senate, and “temporarily” disbands it placing the Jedi in charge. Padmé is a fierce opposer of this and leads a major campaign against possible Jedi Tryanny. It is during a march where she is assassinated.

Anakin is heartbroken by the loss of his wife and children, and flees towards the outer rim where he finds Yoda and the other pure Jedi aren’t dead from the clone wars but rather secretly imprisoned by Windu… Anakin frees him and they promise to build a “rebel alliance”…

OTL Luke is astonished to learn in this universe, his father is everything he hoped he would be. He wants to meet him in his prime. And ATL Anakin feels the same way, as his children had been taken from him before they were born.

So you have a really interesting team up that I think plays off the OT well. What if Luke actually meet his father in his prime?

I’m not sure about the rest of the story. It would be fun to subvert character expectations- by this I mean Boba Fett a loyal rebel in this timeline seeking revenge against Windu, Jyn and Cassian imperial operatives, Darth Maul working as a secret assassin for the Corrupt Jedi.
Obi-Wan will be a figure to be redeemed like OTL Anakin. I think Mace should be the big bad, having been corrupted by power.

Luke agrees to help the rebel cause and even teaches them a thing or two. At the end of the day they save this universe’s day and Luke has to watch his father die again. In the end, a brutally scared ATL Mace follows Luke through the portal… calling himself “Snoke”.

^Okay you knew I had to sneak that in.

Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

While I do see their message about Rey being a nobody (especially following the PT which foolishly made Anakin the “chosen one”), I for one never got the impression that Luke was somehow privileged. He just wanted to be like his father.

Ben I could see being privileged, but I’d like to see them play it up more. Maybe even in an Excalibur like sequence where he tries to unlock an ancient heirloom of the skywalkers but fails- while Rey is deemed worthy of it not for her lineage but for morals.

Maybe it is just my expectations subverted, but I would prefer to see Ben properly end the saga. His death would mark a true conclusion, rather than it being “the Skywalkers are all gone but Rey has founded the New New Jedi and all will be well for 30 years”. Most that comes down to how they present the ending.

I do agree in the context of OT, the “tragedy of Vader” plotline was an excuse. However, it did define a clear beginning, middle, and end for the saga. It is a bit strange that Vader plays a small role in Ep 4 but I think they pull it off especially considering how Ep 6 ends.

My issue with the current “Skywalker Saga” is that the original six aren’t about the Skywalkers. The OT is clearly about Luke, the PT clearly about Anakin… but what about Shimi Skywalker? If this was the Skywalker Saga, shouldn’t her origins be at least explained? And Leia has been tremendously underutilized by both the later OT and ST.

Without a proper connection to the PT, Ep 9 is going to fall flat as an end to nine films. I think it could easily conclude the story of the ST, but will it really end the Skywalker Saga? Killing off Kylo doesn’t count, they need to actually conclude the plot threads that began in Episode One. And those are…

I can’t think of any plot threads for the ST to conclude. If anyone has any please do share.
