Thanks again OT Fan 😃

As far as I have seen, that project has come to a halt. While the attempt is/was phenomenal, there were some technicalities in it that would need to be fixed first if it were to be used. With teaching and school starting up, I won’t have the time or energy to attempt painting out the timestamp myself either.

As for the cropped version, the only scene that bothers me is the one where he first approaches the cockpit and removes his hood. That one is a bit too zoomed, but I can’t pull it back due to the timestamp.

His placement in the frames could actually imply a forward movement to the right, which coincides with the movement of the x-wings entering starkiller base orbit prior and approaching the oscillator after the scene.

I may be able to paint out the time stamp on scenes that have fairly simple backgrounds, but most likely will have this version.

Yeah, I think it’s fine.

I’ve since flip flopped on inserting deleted scenes, the Falcon one specifically. I actually like how it distances Kylo from Han. Each time he calls him “Han Solo” It implies a closeness, but also a third party familiarity which serves the purpose of this particular edit. Here’s the draft of the deleted scene reinstated.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Original Trilogy Fan!

Excellent, I love it!

The only thing I might suggest, would be asking to use the clip from the end of this thread:

http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/OPEN-VOTE-FOR-PRIORITY-OF-TIME-CODE-REMOVAL-FROM-DEL-SCENES-FROM-TFA/id/49509

I just felt the cropping was a bit out of place in the shots of Kylo’s back.

I’d hesitate to add the falcon scene as I’m not sure how he’d get around so much in such little time. I suppose it could be placed after he first senses Han Solo when they begin looking for Rey? He could then head to the Falcon and that would lead to the intro of the xwings? I’ll look into this.

Yeah, I think adding Kylo Searches the Falcon would ultimately strengthen Han and Ben’s relationship, making it more surprising and emotional when he dies. It would also add a little backstory for Kylo, hinting that he had seen his father’s ship before. The film doesn’t need it, but I think it adds a little too have it. I personally think Finn and the Villager and Finn will be fine would also work well in the film. I think Finn and the villager would possibly add more motivation for Finn to leave the First Order, although I can see how some would see it as just repeating a point. Once again it’s just my preference, but I think Finn will be Fine would strengthen’s Finn and Rey’s relationship by showing the first thing Rey dos at the base, is check to see if Finn is alright. Now that it has been confirmed that we will be getting more deleted scenes on the 3D Blu Ray in November, some of those scenes, as well, may improve the film if they were added back in. Anyway, just thought I would give my thoughts. Thanks again, as always.

Kexikus and I have been talking about Finn’s character development and we both agree we’ve had an issue with how quickly Finn goes from being a stormtrooper to killing stormtroopers and officers when they escape in the tie fighter. Kexikus asked if I would mock up this idea. Here it is:

https://vimeo.com/178974400

This will most likely be in the final version.

I like it, I thought it was fine before, but I can see why you chose to do it this way.

Thanks for the reply. Those were some of the more difficult scenes to edit and ensure fluidity. I had hoped to composite his mask over his face originally, but I found that my compositing abilities weren’t up to snuff. I was able to pull off two composite shots, but only because they were viewed from a distance for a short period of time. I’m hoping some Adywan-esque individual might lend a hand with those scenes.

As for the sudden shift in demeanor for the officer, I wonder if I added an angry “What?!” from Kylo Ren before the shift if that would help sell the sudden change and fear?

Thanks again! 😃

Great, thank you.

Thank you Original Trilogy Fan! I greatly appreciate your willingness to view my edit. I’m not sure what is happening with the color. My source is a lossless avi ripped from my blu ray. For some reason, when I render an mp4 file the brightness just tanks. The film did not receive any recoloring treatments. I do have another fan editor that has offered to color correct the film. I may take that route.

I’d love to know the scenes when the editing stood out to see if I can improve those moments.

Thank you again for taking the time to watch and support this project 😃

DigMod

Looking back on it, I think most of the moments where the editing stood out I only noticed because I was trying to compare it to the original. If I had seen this version before the original, I think it would fit just fine. The only moments where I still might notice some editing, would be where Kylo interrogates Rey, and the scene where you cut Kylo getting angry. In the interrogation scene the background seems to change, the camera angles of Kylo’s face make him seem powerful and overbearing when he shouldn’t, and the fact that you only see one shot of them both, makes it feel like those shots were taken from another scene. During the other scene, the officer’s face and tone of voice changes so suddenly it’s sort of distracting. Thanks DigMod

Hey DigMod,

I just finished watching your edit. Thanks for letting me preview it for you. I really enjoyed watching it. At times, I forgot I was watching a fan edit and found myself wrapped up in the story again. I thought many of your edits greatly improved the film. The Rathtar sequence, cutting Rey’s “No” after Finn’s line “You ever fly this thing?”, the Snoke hologram, and ending the film before finding Luke were all great. My first
problem with the edit, however, is that the colors, especially in the first scene, were too dark, and there were a few other scenes in which the colors took me out of the movie. My only other problem with the edit was that there were a few moments of dialogue I thought could have stayed in. For example, Poe’s “so who talks first…” lines, Kylo Ren’s “comfortable?” line, Finn and Poe’s conversation “You need a pilot.”, the Star Trek-esque turret sequence, and a few others. I don’t feel that they detract from the film, and without them, it can be hard to get a feel for the character’s personalities. Hux’s speech and Han talking to his son before his death, I felt were more suspenseful and effective without music. Lastly, there were a few moments where I felt the editing stood out, and it was slightly distracting. Most of these are only personal preferences and I absolutely loved watching the edit as it was.

Thanks DigMod, keep up the great work.

Take a look at this thread from 2012:

That project’s come on a little since I last posted there - I’ve done UK intros for all three OT films now.

I’d be pleased to get them out there, but still not sure of a distribution method that will work for this kind of stuff - Youtube will probably have issue with the assorted music and audio, and ESB includes Black Angel so the sharing rights are a bit suspect anyway.

Would MySpleen be a route worth trying?

You could probably post the other intro reels on Vimeo.

Info Wanted: Does anyone know what previews were originally shown before Star Wars in 1977?

I was wondering if anyone who was alive in 1977 and saw Star Wars in the theater, can remember exactly what previews were shown before the theatrical release of the film. I thought it would be really interesting to see the original previews re-edited before the movie, probably the despecialized edition, and recreate the experience of seeing the movie theatrically. I wanted to try it but I would need to know which trailers played before the movie. It’s possible it could have varied depending on the theater but it would nice to get a general idea from some people who saw the movie in 1977 or knows someone who did. It would also be helpful if anyone knows what previews were shown before ESB and ROTJ and it could recreate the experience of seeing them in the theater as well. Anyway, I was just think it would be great to see for those who weren’t alive then. Thanks.

To clarify, I am not a proponent of using the Alec Guiness impression over McGregor.
It’s fine, but no, it wasn’t me who suggested it.

I prefer Alec Guinness’s voice over Ewan McGregor’s for that scene because not only does it fit better with the OT and parallel him saying to Luke “You’ve taken your first step into a larger world”, but it fits with him saying “Rey.” just before. Now he says “Rey, these are your first steps.” instead of it sounding like two different voices. Ewan McGregor’s performance as Obi-Wan is great though. Thanks Hal, I think someone did suggest the idea on another thread but I’m not sure who.

Thanks for the feedback OTFan!

I like the Alec Guinness idea. Are you the uploader of the video? I’m assuming the lines come from A New Hope when Obi-Wan is talking to Luke on the Falcon after practicing with the remote?

The Threepio lines would be hard to implement based on Marc Thompson’s somewhat overzealous voice performance. I do like the idea of trying to add some reasoning to the scene, but I think just having Threepio show up and give his lines fits the mood of the film a little more. Your audio clip could be inserted during the first scenes of Artoo, which I’ve omitted for now, to indicate that Artoo is infact on the case throughout. This could make the interchange between the droids at the end a little more meaningful.

I’ll mull it around in the melon and see if I can implement your requests 😃

Thanks OTFan!

No, I’m not the uploader of the video. I think Hal 9000 may have actually suggested using it for an edit of TFA on another thread. According to the uploader, it’s a fan voice over that just sounds like Alec Guinness. If you do end up using it, I suggest giving credit to DJ Mitz, for uploading it. I agree that Threepio’s line in the film fits better with the mood of the scene. I do like the idea of putting in the first scene with Artoo, though. Thanks

The edit is essentially complete. I’m just working on making the first lines of the crawl not fade out prematurely. The last week has been full with family and school, hopefully by this weekend the solution will present itself and the preview file will be available.

Yeah, I really like that crawl as well. The only other things I would change about this edit would be to replace Ewan McGregor’s voice with Alec Guinness’s during the force vision from this clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThlaSITXROk and possibly replace Threepio’s line “Artoo Deeto may contain some much needed good news” with this line from the novelization https://www.speakpipe.com/voice-recorder/msg/e68bkypcnnp4h14m
Just a suggestion anyway, thanks. I absolutely love your Snoke hologram.

I like it a lot, I would just recommend changing the last paragraph to something more like:

Help Wanted: Star Wars The Force Awakens: 1986 Edition

I just thought I would give something like this a try.

file:///Users/valeriemidgettLaptop/Desktop/Screen%20Shot%202016-05-14%20at%205.39.10%20PM.png

It doesn’t look very good and would need a lot of work but it only took me a minute.

Perhaps elements from some of the concept art in The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens could also be of some use to someone.
