.: The XØ Project - Laserdisc on Steroids :. (SEE FIRST POST FOR UPDATES) (* unfinished project *)
Time
Yesss, newsletter!...what a nice surprise on a Friday morning!

At first I was a little bummed that we didn't get any new screens of the project, but the promise of an actual video documentary is even better. I'm also very pleased to hear that the special collection is being used in select spots since a lot of us on the board think that a few scenes can really benefit for its use.

If anything, I'm just glad to start receiving newsletters again....

I had a quick question: I noticed in my best-buy ad that they are starting to market some DVD players as "upconverting." Here is a link to one of the models: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7288259&type=product&id=1118840369037

Now, I know what upconversion does, but...

1. Is this a gimmick or the real deal?
2. What kind of effect on quality could one of these players have on the X0 project?
3. How does this upconverting technology compare to the Realta HQV chip by Teranex in select Denon DVD players?

Thanks for your help guys.

It was great advice for people who want to adjust their home theater center without paying a proffesional. I appreciated the article.

However, I think everyone is more interested on how your [proffesional] techniques affect your project. That's why the past newsletters have been so much fun to read. When the progress of the project is absent from a new article it seems a little boring.

I agree with THX. Even if it's just for a few clips like the one Citizen posted, I think it will be worth it. It's time to bury these infamous clips that everyone complains about...especially the ones with smoothing problems. I think the SC discs are the solution.

If Segaflip is talking about mailing the SC discs, that's mighty generous of him. Thanks, Segaflip.

Hey, I have a suggestion. On the website could you list all of the software you are using for the restoration and a brief description of each program? You could put up links to download the software if it's freeware or a link to the software developers website. It might be a good subject for a newletter if you run out of ideas.

If you are willing to do that you could also include a list of the special equipment you are using (besides the LD player).

Just a thought. After all, this IS an educational project.

I agree. It looks great. I would think a capture of the SC discs would be ideal because then the X0 team would be able to decide how much smoothing/filtering to use instead of being stuck with the current levels on the DC discs and working around it. This is coming from a guy who doesn't have to worry about finding/purchasing such discs though...ha.

Well, my first question was about the raw capture. Is it just one of the sets or a combination of sets already spliced together? If it's just one set (Definitive Collection) are other sets going to be captured in full in order to splice in better frames from different sets if needed? Kind of like "the best of the best" frames all in one capture, you see? Your Laserman quote doesn't answer that question.

I think it answers my second question, but is the Special Collection Pre-THX? If so, then my second question was answered and I guess it's not worth it. However, I thought the SC discs were THX and the highest quality around making them a worthwhile investment to the team.

So that is the full raw capture of one set. I'm guessing the Definitive Collection. Now do you have to get a full raw capture of other sets such as "Faces", or just peices of other sets if needed?

--

I would think that the team would absolutely want the Special Collection discs since there is at least a small amount of improvement over the Definitive Collection. After all, if this is the end-all-be-all capture then wouldn't you want the best source even if it is by a small margin? If the best source isn't used then someone can always say "yes, the x0 project is amazing...buuuut it could have been better if they had used the NTSC-J version." I would hate to have that in the back of my mind every time I watch it. "What if?"

If it's just the money then I'm sure all of us watching you would have no problem chipping in to help pay for it through donations. My gut tells me there must be a bigger reason than a money shortage though, so I trust your decisions.

Wow, that is surprising that Laserman has dropped out. I thought I just read a couple of days ago that he was going to do a "cleaned up" version (i.e. color corrected sabers) once the project was finished. Kind of dissapointing. Either way, I hope he feels better in the future and I'd like to say thank you for his contributions.

p.s. Nice job starting the thread over, Zion. It feels so fresh and clean. Ha.

NEWB QUESTION WARNING

I am only familiar with burning DVD R+ discs on my home PC. I hear a lot of talk on the boards about using single layer and dual layer DVD's to burn restorations. If I were to walk into a store and pick up DVD R+'s, how would I know if they are single or dual layer? I don't notice any indication on the labels. Also, do you need a special DVD R drive to burn onto dual layer discs? Can the standard DVD R drives that come with Dell, Gateway, etc. computers burn onto dual layer DVD Rs?

Thanks guys.

Lucky for us all, the team is taking time out of their schedules to manage a website (which should be updated soon - see above posts). Anything more slows them down from doing what is most important - finishing the project.

Also, they have mentioned that the audio hasn't even been discussed yet. Couple that with "raw" footage and you've got a product that won't represent the project very well.

So I guess we'll just have to hear from the team on the subject...

The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)

This might be the wrong answer to your problem, but I had the same experince when I played the discs in an Apex DVD player (crap!) on a RCA projection TV. The main menu music played, but when I started the movie there was no sound. I went into the audion options and selected the pcm audio. Problem solved. I hope your problem is as easily fixed as mine was.

Now...can anyone help me with the PS2 problem I posted a page back?

The Cowclops Transfers (a.k.a. the PCM audio DVD's, Row47 set) Info and Feedback Thread (Released)

I have witnessed the double black bar effect with my v2.0 DVDs (like everyone). However, I popped my DVDs into my PS2 to watch and there doesn't seem to be a double black bar effect. What's worse is the screen seems to be stretched ever-so-slightly vertically to make up for the loss of one set of black bars. Has anyone else experienced this on their PS2? Any ideas on how to restore the correct aspect ratio? I haven't had any luck changing the setting on the PS2 between 4:3, Full Screen, and 16:9. Could it possibly be my TV? Thanks.

I would think that ANY transfer would have a difficult time looking good on a HDTV simply because the original resolution captured is low. Even when the X0 project is released you better believe there will be nay-sayers with HDTV's preaching that it's no good and we all wasted our time waiting for it to arive.

The Cowclops V2 looks spectacular on my 27" Flatscreen TV (non-HD) AND pretty darn good on my flatscreen computer monitor. I don't plan on buying a higher resolution TV anytime in the near future, so I say if you're like me then the Cowclops V2 will more than satisfy your needs for now.

I'd also like to add that I don't have any other transfers to compare it with (newbie).

Info Wanted: Best way to do reviews for the OT Preservations?

RichKS - I can definitely see where you're coming from in terms of the money and hassle with setting up a good surround system. Most people who own thousand dollar speakers don't even have them in the right room conditions or position to get their money's worth in the first place.

However, I've been hearing A LOT about Yamaha's YSP-1 speaker system. It's just one unit that can sit on top or below your TV and has an out for a subwoofer. It's got around 42 speakers inside and projects the sound around the room without the hassle of setting anyting up. You even configure it to the size of the room and it callibrates where it bounces the sounds. I don't have one, nor have a heard it myself, but it sound like the solution for guys like you and me. You can find them on eBay for around $900...which is actually a bargain considering it's original MSRP was $1,500.

Only remaining problem might be that is still creeps you out...

Printing out DVD Labels
Time
THANK TO EVERYBODY who responded to my cry for help. That's why this forum continues to be one of the best (in my opinion) on the net.

To conclude my situation - I went to Staples and purchased some Maxell non-hub white matte DVD+R's and used them with my Epson R200. They look awesome and I would seriously recommend buying the R200 or R300 for anyone looking for a photo printer. It's only around $100 bucks and it has 6 color ink cartridges...something that only the newest and higher cost printers offer. Now the only thing I have to do is find out where I can get this magical "spray." However, I may opt out of the spray since is probably adds weight to the DVD in different areas if you don't apply it perfectly and I don't think I want to take that risk...

P.S. I was in Best Buy also and I noticed that Memorex sells glossy DVD cover photo paper ($13.99 for 15 sheets). This is a real help to everyone into making DVD covers. The only other way I can forsee getting glossy photo paper big enough for a DVD case is by cutting up 11"x17" photo paper...and that stuff is WAY to expensive since you have to buy 25 or so sheets at a time.
