RELEASED: "Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Special Longer Version)"

On a side note, since i saw the love towards the new movie, Star Trek: The Experience should be opening just intime for the new movie. Rumor is they are going to be gearing it towards the new movie more than the Star Trek universe as the Hilton one was. I should be going to Vegas right at that time so we will see... in regards to this, i can't wait to see. once you get it, seed it long and hard. I will!!

Idea: Preserving STAR TREK - a preservation project?
Time

I think the biggest problem with a project like this will be the quality of the results - a majority of the stuff with be 2nd generation or older VHS so the quality of the video is going to be bad.  even stuff taken from an original tape will be lacking compared to modern stuff.  having said that, i think a lot of this stuff should be preserved in the best way possible.  I know myself, i saw Nimoy's Star Trek Memories on tv a lot as a kid but no one seems to show it now.  i didn't notice it (could just be me) but did anyone mention the Making of DS9 tape that paramount put out with Terry Farrell hosting?  very interesting on Paramounts part but that was back when they actually did stuff with Star Trek.

Time

it's been said before and i'll say it again - this is amazing!! i thought your version of "a new hope" was impressive but this looks like it is going to be event better.  just hope you don't take the lucas route and now have Yoda and Luke dueling it out with lightsabers during his training  :)

hey, with the isolated score, what about using alternate takes?  i found a great torrent that had alternate versions of the score ( a lot of minor changes in arrangements) - it could be interesting to have an alternate version of Ilia's theme, the title, Goldsmith's original version of the Enterprise theme when we first see the ship itself, etc.

according to the fanedits.com site, disc 1 and 2 of this are done. does anybody have them? like a lot of fans, I was disappointed when Paramount started to release the single disc, no frills versions of the movies and then just released the one version of TMP. I mean, they released 2 different versions on VHS and never mentioned the directors cut of Khan yet they decide to release 2 versions of Khan and neither version of TMP. man they miss the boat when they say there isn't enough fan support for Star Trek yet they pass on the chance to make more cash by not releasing these but that's a different rant. if anyone knows where i can find these or can mail me a copy of them, let me know and we can make some arrangements. thanks.

I have to say, not bad. Like everyone else in the world, there were one or two things i would have done different myself but it looks good to me. too bad there weren't decent quality deleted scenes to include, like Geordie's torture. would have made the whole "his heart wasn't in it" joke make sense. but in any event, thanks for the work. it is appreciated.

I had a thought today. anybody try doing an edit of "First Contact"? It is a pretty sound movie but i had the idea of removing all of the Data/Borg queen scenes right until the end where Picard goes to Engineering after everyone else abandons ship. While those are good scenes, they can be removed and it doesn't hurt the main story of the movie. plus if you remove it, it makes a bigger impact towards the end when Picard is on the bridge and he hears Data say "Captian". Just like Picard, the audience assumed the worse and now realize he survived. As well, it makes a bigger impact when Picard sees the Borg Queen for the first time. We will have seen her at the beginning of the movie but like Picard, assume she is dead since we didn't see her through out the rest of the movie. then all of a sudden, she is there and Data is assimilated. it means getting rid of some cool scenes but in the end, I don't think it would hurt the movie any. Thoughts?

now that is an interesting idea. if anyone was willing to try that, i will help in any way i can(which probably isn't much but i will try). obviously it was for home video only but it is a shame Paramount never put out a widescreen extended version. speaking of extended versions, has anyone ever thought of putting back all the cut scenes and doing an original draft of any of the star trek or star wars movies? I myself would like to see an original cut of Nemesis because i have heard that even though it was a lot longer, it was a better version. The music might not work and the flow will be strange but it would be interesting to see the films as originally shot and according to the script. holla.

Idea: Another Star Trek Phase 2 idea

You know, after thinking about this a bit and after seeing what someone else did, this might not be as tough as I thought. There is still a lot of work to do and the soundtrack will cause problems, but I think you could make a 90-minute pilot episode version of this. The one I downloaded was 15 minutes and went right up to the Enterprise passing Jupiter scene. They cut out Spock on Vulcan, the tram station, the trip from the space station to the Enterprise, and the crew briefing but I think you could cut more and the story would work. For example, when Kirk arrives on the Enterprise, when he enters the turbolift, have him go straight to Engineering and cut out the whole bridge scene. If you cut the crew briefing, then this has no reason to stay either. Also, once in Engineering you can cut straight from Decker saying "I don't think you're sorry. Not one damn bit" to Kirk ordering him to the bridge. It makes Kirk's character stronger then it appears now. Also, and this is a pure nerd thing, but you can cut out the line where he says "Ahead Warp .5" when they leave spacedock. Like I said, it is a nerd thing but full impulse is nowhere near warp .5(try warp .1 or so). These are just some simple cuts, but you could probably shrink it down to 90 minutes and have a story that works nicely. The soundtrack is another matter!! Just some second thoughts. If I ever get ambitious and get this second hard drive installed, I might try one someday.

would be interesting, but the story might seem more screwed up then it already is. You would need to cut a lot of scenes and that might make it more confusing. but then again, you don't need five people reacting to the same thing so you might be able to get away with it. I don't know if a 60 minute version would be possible, but a 90 minute version( like the pilots from TNG to Enterprise) might work. ignoring that they are two different styles and such, how about combining "Space Seed" and ST2 into one movie? ST2 is 116 minutes(the original version is a little shorter) and the episode is only 50 minutes, so the whole thing would be less than 3 hours which isn't unbearable. the only thing you would need to do which might be a real pain is look at the season 2 and 3 episodes for a scene with Chekov that you could steal and use so he actually appears in the episode. It would be nice to include some of the missing scenes too, but those are hard to find and even harder to find with decent picture and sound quality.

hi folks. I have been checking out the forum for the last few weeks. You're doing some good work here. I have always wanted to get both versions of TMP on dvd. I think the version they released is an improvement over either version on vhs, but there is something to be said for having the version you remember("Star Trek--Classic Editions" sound good). I think though that it may be hard to do. Like others have said, the cuts will cause probelms with the soundtrack, so you may have a hell of a time getting everything back to the way it used to be. But I say go for it. For me, that is the only real problem I have with dvd's. The movie hits the theatre one way and then it the "unrated", or "uncut", or "special, extended because the theatre version didn't sell so we re-cut it and are going to try again" version gets released and the original cut is lost. I never saw the original version of ST6 in the theatre so an original cut of that would be nice, just to see how it actually was shown to the masses. not that i am saying you should do it, just that it would be nice to see. live long and prosper:
