Clone Wars 2008 Redux - working title - CANCELLED
Time

***CANCELLED***

For the following reasons:

1.) Still never managed to split the audio tracks sufficiently

2.) The Clone Wars TV Episodes have been much more stellar (pardon the pun) to this and have proved to me that this "mega-episode" should NEVER have been released in the theatre.  Story arcs like the "Malevolence" and singles like "Rookies" show that what we got in the theatre was sub-par even as the prequels go.  As a great philosopher once said, "You can spray perfume on a turd - but it's still a turd."

*****Original Post follows *****

This will be worked on once it hits DVD, but I welcome your suggestions now.

I’ve puttered around with some home edits, and am going to take the ambitious step of editing “The Clone Wars” (2008 theatrical).  I may be getting in way over my head, but Lucasfilms pushed me to it.  Let me also say that while I plan to pour tons of time and effort into this I do not have the experience of Adywan or ADigitalMan… so we’ll see what comes of my attempt.  This will be my first 'public' edit (if all goes well)

I know this “film” was targeted at kids, but I’d like to make a more mature viewing experience for folks who grew up on Star Wars.

Here are some changes I am considering (and will update this list as I go):

- No more “Space Ghost” newsreel voiceover.  I almost left the theatre at this point.  I’ll be creating a crawl and then dropping into the Battle.

- Ahsoka lines:  No more “Sky guy” or “Artooie” crap.  Chopping out as many “stinky” references as possible.  I felt the Ahsoka character, while headstrong/precocious simply talked too much and observed too little.  She won’t be quite as chatty in this edit. The lip movements throughout the film are bad enough that replacing these should not be too tough.  (famous last words, eh?) Some of this might also be achieved by discrete cuts.  Since it is animated and has a rather choppy (or wooden) feel to it, I may be able to get away with some of the dialog changes and keep it fairly unnoticeable.

- Ziro's dialogue – change all of it and add subtitles (I'll be recording myself speaking Huttese and adding room ambience/ subtle reverb)

- music at Ziro's (something otherworldly - not that awful Film Noir jazz.)

- taking out Battle droid inane dialog throughout (and /or modulating it lower a la ADM's Episode III).  No more “outnumbered? What?  One, two, three…”  I like them more menacing than slapstick.

- same with IG droids.

More to come as I think about it.  Feel free to post other suggestions.

Clean Original Trilogy Audio/Dialogue - Where? How?
Time

thanks for the links Moth3r!

I plan to edit the theatrical "Clone Wars" once it hits DVD to make it less kiddie, and the links told me exactly what I needed to know.  I am working on a Mac.

I'll be redoing:

- Ziro's dialogue - all of it (I'll be recording myself speaking Huttese and adding room ambience/ subtle reverb)

- music at Ziro's (something otherworldly - not that awful Film Noir jazz)

- taking out Battle droid inane dialog throughout (and /or modulating it lower a la ADM's Episode III)

- same with IG droids

thanks again for posting all these in one convenient spot!

I'm hoping to do something with the mattes in most of the bespin shots as they really stick out as paintings. The clouds need to be real and i'm hunting around in my HD collection for movies that feature above the cloud shots that i can use. It would have been so much easier if i had stuck to DVD res instead of 1080p.

I'm almost done with the first pass colour correction so here's a few screenshots of how its going so far:

I'm going to miss that blue-ish hue on Dagobah  :)  - Great work Ady!

EDIT: Just saw your post, OBtwosy. Did you use Disk Utility to burn Ady's DVD9, or have you just used it in the past? Have you used it to burn dual-layer disks before?

sorry this is late - I've been away for a bit. yes. Disk Utility worked just fine for Dual Layer - Ady's, and some ADigitalMan stuff. cheers!

also, I had done cover art some time ago and posted the rapidshare link for those interested, it didn't make it into the DVD-ROM folder though. No bruised feelings or anything, but it's still over at fanedit.org if anybody wants it.

Damn, sorry about that. I thought i had put them all on the DVD.

no worries - the DVD-9 is beautiful! thanks again for all your work and your amazing talent!

thanks -1
good to know

I got all the files an un-rar'ed them. I had to see it before burning (need to get DVDs later today) and when I viewed it in MPEGStreamclip it sort of 'blinks' every now and then. maybe it's just that software. I'll burn a copy and see. not sure what to do with an md5 on a Mac.

Ziz... I considered paying the Rapidshare fee, but I just hate paying for download services when there are perfectly free ones floating around out there (not to mention my distaste for paying for a slightly altered version of a movie I already own).

Do you know if a paid member can download more than one file at at time from Rapidshare? If I could simply click away and download 80 files simultaneously, I might pay the fee.

yes - sort of. I don't know that you'd want to try and DL all 80 rars at once. With my DSL connection, I typically like to DL about 5 files at a time since each is 100 MB. Yes, I have to dl the next set every 30 min. When I've tried to do like 20-30 at a time they end up 'timing out'.

[EDIT: though if you have a decent download manager program, you can queue the files so they DL in order so you don't have to babysit. I did a trial of one that worked great, but the trial ran out and I didn't want to front the cash to buy it, can't remember what it was now]

I've also DL other edits from fanedit (of movies I own - just to be clear). so the access fee has been well worth it. just my 2 cents.

everyone has their favorite DL method, but rapidshare has worked best for me

(I'm up to part 55 of 80. almost there... almost there...)

Here's another sneak peak at the painting

I like it, but I would get rid of that big word "SAMPLE" on it. Just doesn't look right.

ROFL... yeah a big "c" in a circle would be more Star Wars-y

so no Vader image, eh? (just asking folks, no need for anyone to call down fire from the sky)

We may not know you in person, but we've all grown really fond of you around here -- and fond of you as a person, not as an editing machine.

amen.

Ady, several copies of Revisited have been given out from my end to folks who are gladly throwing away their 2004 SE DVDs. One friend said to me, "you mean I can actually keep this?" He was floored by your edit.

Thanks again for all your work. Some friends are doing a Saturday SW marathon soon and I said, "If I'm coming, we'll be using my copy of Revisited when we get to 4." Then explained why, and they are stoked to see it.

well the commentary idea has been thrown out. I've just added an extra track with a bitrate that would be used for dolby 2.0 and it pushes it over the 100% capacity mark. I don't want to have to lower the quality of the extras just to have an extra audio track so there won't be one i'm afraid. Plus i have to fit the covers in the DVD-ROM folder yet too.

a humble suggestion - could you do similar to what the Rifftrax guys do and offer a feature length MP3 commentary online that we could play on another device (iPod, Zune, etc.) while we watch the DVD on another device? the Rifftrax thing has worked well for me. (rifftrax.com for the uninitiated)

Idea: Family Friendly version of Family Guy's 'Blue Harvest'?
Time
Hey ErikStormtrooper!

I actually did this for much the same reason - so I could watch it with my 8 yr. old.
I also created a new crawl (in iMovie - so it's all center justified - rats) so I wouldn't have to explain the Angelina Jolie line.

I'll post or PM you a more extensive list of edits (busy weekend for me) , but just a few things I cut were:
- I cut the entire pre & post Star Wars 'family' scenes. They were just completely unnecessary imho
- all expletives
- all OMGs (personal preference)
- ALL hints of pedophilia with the Ben character - in my opinion this is just never funny - ever
- R2's nastier lines. He now says "that's the way we do it in my neighborhood."
- Luke and Leia on 1st meeting:
"Aren't you a little fat for a Stormtrooper?"
"Well, stay here and rot."
"Wait, who are you?"

Admittedly the duel is less than exciting, but I'd rather have that than the flaccid joke that existed. (pun fully intended)

I also added SFX from the original series when /where appropriate to alter the less than savory lines... things like R2's beeps and I threw in some Jawa SFX to make the Grey Poupon joke funnier

The fact that it's animated helped immensely to cut nastier stuff.

Anyway, let me know and I can send you a copy. This is not an Adywan or ADM skilled edit, but my son doesn't even notice the cuts, and we can both have a good laugh.

Ady - I simply love the subtitle track that shows your changes. I missed so many subtle ones the first 2 times through.

Note : A sense of humor may be required.

dang, I know I left that around here somewhere, guess I'll have to dig through my sarcasm pile. ;)

Anti-Matter, when folks have moved projects or discontinued them in the past, they have been much less cryptic. [JD's SW Begins & SW Reborn come to mind] I was following your thread daily as it sounded like it had much potential. But it wasn't my project, and since I had no technical skills to offer, I should not have felt like the rug was pulled away when you made your decision to move.
good luck with things, hope your project is all you want it to be.

now back to look for that humor thing...
