I love that idea! It would be very easy to implement; O00ll00O would you mind if I borrow your idea for my own edit?

Of course, that’d be great! You can if you want, but I don’t recommend using my exact video due to poor quality. It’s ripped from Joys youtube video and then it was compressed even more for google drive. But I’d love to see/hear your version of how you do it and think it’d be cool if you posted it here or PM me if it’s not a change Joy cares about. And I feel like there’s gotta be better SFX to use for it, but if you want the sounds I used, I can send them to you.

Awesome work again on the deleted scene footage by the way! It’s fun seeing it in Joys edit 😃 A lot of people think up-scaling is just dropping a file in and hitting “upscale”, but I know it’s a ton of work tweaking things to get it right and appreciate it!

Love love loved this video Joy!! It’s wild how good you are at duel & chase scenes! The SFX were perfect, I didn’t notice anything out of place. I can’t wait to see this with the soundtrack behind it! The N-1 dog fight pace is way ramped up and I loved it. I do have one additional idea for SFX I’d like to get your opinion on…

So in the original TPM (and in your cut) before Anakin’s ship is hit, the following happens:

1.) R2-D2 screams, then the ship is hit
2.) Anakin’s N-1 seems to take 1 (relatively quiet) shot on his right wing
3.) He spins (it’s a good trick) and lands in the hanger

I propose:

1.) Anakin’s ship is hit, THEN R2 screams
2.) Make the shot that hits the wing slightly louder as it must’ve done decent damage to make him spin out, crash land, and eventually shut down
3.) Add cockpit error alarms/warnings right after the blaster hit (I might’ve mixed that to quiet), and change the alarm type when he starts to level it out in the hanger
4.) Once he starts flying through the hanger, after the first person view in the cockpit, it cuts to R2 and then play a sound effect of him slightly fixing the ship

I feel like doing those things helps match the intensity of the dogfight.

I’m by no means an editor, this is a mock-up of what it might sound like. I couldn’t find N-1 cockpit sound effects online, so I just put in some alarms I thought might fit. You could always change those to a different sound effects, but again this is just to give you an idea.

Another happy landing

I enjoyed the new maximalist AOTC. The upscaled footage looks much better than before, and putting the younglings scene in didn’t bother me. I did see 2 small errors during my watch.

The black bars in the kiss scene are light black and when it transitions to Kamino they turn back to dark black. You can also see the transition swipe in the black bars. It’s a lot more noticeable watching it compared to the picture below.

In this scene there’s a thin white stripe that appears for a few seconds.

I like the structure of your opening. The sequencing is vastly different in comparison to the original, but it makes a lot of sense.

I actually attempted to make an edit inside your edit. This is the first cut I’ve ever done, so let me know your thoughts. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Y5ZUOb6-XaXDjLtnVwtdiNBEZeFayocU/view?usp=sharing

-Start the music a beat after 3P0 says “he agrees!”. I think that feels closer to the atmosphere of the cantina when everyone abruptly moves on after a conflict is settled. It’s also a little more chaotic with Chewy trying to yell over the music.
-Remove Landos helmet bonk on the ceiling
-Remove how long the shot of Lando pulling down his mask is. It’s way to in your face.

Yo! I really like your recut! Great job! It just goes to show you there are 100s of good ways to skin a cat.

I quite like the way you cut around the Chewie sequence. It’s very effective at getting rid of the helmet bonk, and the music cut is pretty smooth.

For my cut I would stick with what I have on all of those points, for sequence balancing reasons (if you pop up to #1633920 on this thread, I explain how that kind of editing works in detail). The back half of that Jabba sequence, I’m trying to throttle down the pace in order to move into a more contemplative Dagobah scene, so the helmet bonk (while a bit goofy), gives me the meta-pace I’m looking for. As a side note. . . I’m almost convinced George worked in a helmet bonk into all six of his films. . . I don’t know where they all are, but there are so many of them, I’m starting to think it turned into an intentional running gag by the time we get to the Prequels (See the Jango Fett bonk on Kamino).

Last thing: (Brace yourself this is gonna be super pedantic) The reason I personally wouldn’t tighten up the music cue the way you did, is because a Jazz (Jizz?) song of that type starts with a silent count, because the opening notes begin before the first “1”. So instead of “1-2-3-4-Bummmm-budum-budum-bum-bum” (Jedi Rocks from the Special Edition), it’s “1-2-3-(4)budum-(1)BumBum”. If you watch Max Rebo’s hand, he’s doing the silent count so the band can start on “4”. The silent beat that you cut is the beginning of the silent count. Basically, there’s no way a real musician could start that song as quickly as you cut it and have everybody come in on time.

PS Thank you mom for all of those stupid Clarinet lessons in High School. . .

I appreciate all the helpful feedback, thank you! And hey maybe just add a helmet bonk sound like in ANH:SE and lean in to it lol

Your updated AOTC Dooku fight is so much more menacing and quick paced. He’s an experienced Jedi master who’s tapped in to the dark side, and your cut gives that feeling much more naturally. The only shot that looks a little off to me is the shot of Obi-Wan hopping off the little ship ramp, to be followed by the next frame where they’re both in different spots (due to cutting out Padme’s little blurp about getting a transport). How do you think it looks without the little ramp hop? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UV6fCLpxe9O_tQ3mfAJgCCbVlsPYF85y/view?usp=sharing

Hey Joy, how’d you go about editing/editing around the Obi-Wan Vader duel in ANH? I’ve seen some people increase the playback speed, make quicker cuts, etc. You do anything like that? Or do you somehow remove the fight all together? I’d enjoy watching your take on that

I’m still fine tuning that sequence, but the short answer is cut it out entirely.

There’s several reasons why for me that’s the right answer, if like me you’re trying to do a recut of all six of George’s films.

 1. The scene is unsalvageable. I don’t know if you saw my recut of the Empire Duel that I posted a while ago, but both that duel and the RotJ Duel can be brought into pretty close alignment with the Prequel Duels if you use the same editing techniques that Ben Burtt and his team used in the Prequels. There is no way to fix SC38 like that.

 2. The scene is unnecessary. There is no essential dialogue or information delivered in that scene. Furthermore, the dialogue seems odd considering how the Battle of the Heroes ended. That duel is a fight between brothers, whereas the dialogue in SC38 feels more like a detached teacher/student relationship. This misalignment is another reason I would argue to cut it. Ironically Vader’s conversations to himself and Tarkin about Obi-Wan’s presence, and the look on Obi-Wan’s face when he draws his lightsaber while he’s sneaking around tell a much better story on their own without SC38.

 3. I reworked the whole action around SC38, so that we don’t know that Vader and Ben are dueling until Luke does. If the whole sequence is restructured as a surprise reveal for the duel, the result feels shockingly natural and intentional from a filmmaking standpoint.

 4. The new sequence actually makes MORE sense and to my mind is WAY MORE interesting without SC38. Vader tells Tarkin that “Escape is not Obi-Wan’s plan.” . . . Then what is Ben’s plan? I think Ben’s plan is to draw Vader into a duel to stop him from stopping Luke and his friends from escaping. Ben knows this will work because Vader wants revenge for what happened on Mustafar. I think Vader knows that this is Ben’s plan and doesn’t care because he hates Obi-Wan that much. That’s why he tells Tarkin that he must face Ben alone. He is determined to kill Obi-Wan himself. The smile on Ben’s face as he sacrifices himself, could now be read as Ben realizing his plan to use Vader’s hatred against him has worked, and he might also be basking in the irony that Vader’s son is slipping away right under his nose.

Does that all make sense?

 1. Makes total sense. I agree, if you’re watching the movies in order, than most of that dialogue is redundant and a bit disconnected from what we just saw at the end of the prequels. I think that’s a really smart way to approach it with how you cut it. I imagine you’d trim Luke’s reaction to Obi-Wans death to be a little tighter too?

 2. Yeah I thought your Empire duel was fantastic! I liked a lot of your changes and mentioned I liked how much more intense Vader came out on the bridge among other things. Couldn’t ever find that one re-composited shot in the sequence for the bonus points though 😕 I actually just watched that cut again and thought the part where Luke falls in the carbon freezing chamber was done so much better. The original looks way more clumsy.

Latest Update: (March 6th 2025)

“Okay time to get here as well! You all saw what happened, luckily the frustration didn’t last long and we really had a miracle. Before I address your questions and concerns, here’s a bit more explanation on my decision to change the location of the cave. First of all, it’s the logic behind Obi-Wan protecting Luke. In case Luke is in danger, Obi-Wan has to cross the Dune Sea and travel for a while to get to the homestead. Not very practical… The second reason is a double-edged sword (no pun intended) when it comes to Obi-Wan’s mental state. He’s close to Luke, so he could protect him, but he also constantly faces the reminder of his failure and fears for the future whenever he looks outside his cave. I thought it would be interesting to explore that idea. Owen knows all of this and remains as hostile as always, which fits well into that idea. My friend and I also tweaked their conversation a little to further accommodate that change. Then, when Obi-Wan decides to move in the end, Owen’s shift in attitude makes more sense. Regarding the location of the cave, nothing really changed in the broader scope since there is already a large rock formation that Obi-Wan uses to observe the homestead. I just placed the cave there. The distance is the same as in the series.”

Latest Update: (March 4th 2025)

"I usually refrain from posting bad news, but it’s really a terrible time for me right now.

I was in the middle of recording a tutorial for a new-ish type of VFX I’m doing for TOTM when the rack that holds my hard drives fell to the floor, along with the drives, of course.

Out of 8 HDDs, 2 of the most important ones no longer work—the one with all my personal data (including all of the family photos and early works), and the one with half of the TOTM reshoots, sounds, and source footage.

Luckily, the disk with the Premiere and Nuke project files survived, so in theory, I can re-link everything if I manage to recover any data from the failed drives.

Overall, the last few weeks haven’t been great, to be honest, and this seems to be the culmination…

I’ll see what kind of work I can still do so I don’t waste my time waiting for a solution, but good old Murphy sure is trying to make it difficult for me…"

All right buddy, here’s the “Prequelized” version of the Bespin Duel: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1D71gfooBPieEGCXGnD414-IpcRnD_PGu?usp=drive_link

I smashed the three duel sections together, and the color is the ungraded HDR footage, but it should still give you a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

Great edit! I was never a fan of how Luke looked when stuff was being thrown at him, so I was glad to see that cut. And I loved how fast Vader comes out the door to the bridge fight. It was a much more aggressive tone after that which was done really well. Also cutting the hammed up Luke acting before he fell played better than I expected. Thanks for the fun watch!

That’s awesome. I wonder the most about the Anakin on fire pic and how it’ll look in motion and play out in the story.

It’s not in this sequence of PixelJokers, but if it’s anything like his clip showing one of Obi-Wans nightmares, than I imagine it’ll play out incredibly. Although, Obi-Wan does briefly see Anakin in a flash of lighting before their duel on Taskeed, so who knows where else he might pop up.

Inspired by JeromeTheEditor, I thought I’d give this a shot too.
Here is my version of the speed force run removed. Pretty simple edit, I removed Qui-Gon moving to a defensive position after Obi-Wan sees the destroyers, so it appears they are fleeing all along. And Obi-Wan moves to the right, so I mirrored the shot of them going into the ventilation shaft so that it is also to the right.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nylP49-Jr89pEcVgrFZuMmUvhO8kztpg/view?usp=drive_link

I think your original version is my favorite mikebailey15. To me it doesn’t feel necessary to have every retreat due to blaster fire. Watching this version it looks like Obi-Wan clearly sees the destroyers coming, and then they try and leave fast enough before they can put up shields and start firing. Superior to the force run in the movie.

Also question for anyone that knows; What’s the best lossless way to incorporate this in to Hals version? Mostly looking for a program and exact render settings.

can’t wait for this, but what is the Yoda and dark Luke scenes here all about?

“Added Yoda scenes (youtube)”

Dark Luke Scenes:
-Shots added to emphasize Obi-Wans self-doubts and fears for the future (reddit comment)

Dark Luke scenes look to be PTSD related dreams of losing Anakin to the dark side and seeing Luke do the same, as seen in Pixels Instagram trailer…
https://www.youtube.com/embed/Uw1NMgSHAFA?si=RkURLOMdaLr8vgVe&start=14&end=21

Yoda Scenes:
-Obi-Wan is going through the training Yoda mentioned at the end of ROTS, he wants to be connected to the Force so he could contact Qui-Gon, but his PTSD and the fact that he’s not at peace with his past is stopping him from achieving that (redddit comment)

In Pixels trailers, we see scenes with Obi Wan meditating surrounded by stars and later Theed plasma refinery shown as a world between worlds. “What it presents is a visualization of a deep meditative state of Obi-Wan, where he can talk to Yoda, see his personal fears manifested in front of him, as well as accomplishments as he gets stronger in the Force. Basically I asked myself, what would a jedi see when his consciousness connects with the Force.” -PixelJoker

 • “Anakin look updated in flashbacks” (discord faq)
 • “Anakin/Obi-Wan training sequence is sprinkled through the film where it makes sense instead of all at once” (reddit comment)

Above is all Pixel has mentioned about the flashbacks. Hopefully he adds some much needed changes in these scenes. I did a little mock up of what looks a little better in my opinion. Changes include…

 • Major color correction on entire scene, and especially on both faces. It’s way to pink and de-saturated
 • Obi-Wans robes are pink-ish, even after color correction and need to be a little tan
 • Obi-Wans hair needs more orange in it
 • I think Obi-Wan needs to be de-aged as well
 • Needs Coruscant traffic in background
