Harmy's RETURN OF THE JEDI Despecialized Edition HD (AVCHD DVD9 & NTSC DVD5 available!!! SEE FIRST POST!!!)

I was never pointing on someone’s post here. It is a only a notice of things I read on Facebook and somewhere else. No personal offense.

Hmmmm. Except you did mention “here” specifically…

As I said, I think if someone is being rude, it’s fair to call them out. But I don’t think it’s fair to lump that in with legitimate feedback and constructive criticism. That’s one of the ways in which the project improves, which redounds to all our benefit.

I think you’re right about constructive feedback. People here, unlike facebook, are generally very courteous.

And I think the fact that the complaints are so extremely minor (and, IMO, 90% dismissed by Harmy’s gallery), shows just how close to perfection this turned out.

But there are indeed people on spleen and facebook who are imagining that the contrast is ‘ruined’ throughout the whole film. Harmy pretty much shut that idea down with his gallery, and it is more likely that some of those people don’t understand what the 35mm shots are, or how incredible it is to have them in as good a state as this.

Yeah. Facebook is thing of its own. To be mostly ignored, that’s why I come here.

Anf agreed how damn good this thing looks. All of them. What Harmy has pulled off is nothing short of a miracle, and if he never did another thing I’d still feel set for having a first rate, HD version of theses films as they’re meant to be seen (though obviously new remasters are welcomed and anticipated). Even when (or if) Disney finally releases these movies in HD on their original form, we may have something with more resolution, but it’s unlikely that as much care will have been put into the colours, audio options, etc.

I don’t understand the people here that are complaining over colors, crushed blacks etc. Wtf are they talking about? I mean you gave us the best experience of ROTJ ever and people are complaining the Shit out of that. We have to be so thankful for what you have done and the time you spent for this version. I think the colors are awesome, ROTJ never looked better imo!!

Some people really have 1st world problems…

While I haven’t yet offered any criticism or feedback on this release, I really don’t think this comment is fair to many here who have.

I believe Harmy wants constructive, politely stated feedback, that’s the way this project continually evolves and improves. I think most everyone, here at least, who have commented on dark scenes, crushed blacks, etc. has done so politely with genuine expressions of appreciation. I know I for one find the Emperor a little dark on the crossed sabre scene, though I haven’t mentioned it. That doesn’t mean I’m not appreciative of what Harmy had accomplished. But I’m also appreciative of those who brought it to Harmys attention so he can consider it for future releases. Similarly, while the blacks look fine to me, I don’t think there’s any wrong with those who see it differently. Then Harmy makes whatever call he wishes, as it should be. And when Harmy responds to criticism or feedback, he always says why he made the choices he did, and for me at least this is interesting.

And your comment about “first world problems” is frankly a little snide. They’re ALL first world problems. Wanting a despecialised edition in the first place because the current Blu Ray isn’t good enough for us (and it’s not) is a first world problem. All we talk about on this forum are first world problems. If you’re unconcerned with such problems then stick with the Special Editions you already (presumably) have on BD and be done with it.

So as far as I can see most everyone here is thankful for what Harmy has done. But if everything was perfect from the get go there would have been no need to go beyond 1.0. So if someone is being rude (e.g. Calling it disgusting) by all means call them out. Bur theres nothing wrong with constructive feedback.

The Godfather Saga - HD Restoration
Time

digitalfreaknyc said:

Since this one has a 5.1 track (restored!!), does anyone have the original PCM track from the laserdisc? I’d be interested in syncing it for the release.

The original mono synched to this would be amazing. Your AMC HD rip is in stereo, right?

digitalfreaknyc said:

There are some significant differences between the AMC version and this one so I’d like to go through and edit those together for the “bonus” part of the disc. Kay no longer lights candles at the end either.

Just curious, what major changes have you noticed? As far as I know the AMC & HBO edits are basically the same, save for some minor edits/changes. And I’m assuming both versions are taken from the same print.

In any event, any update on a 1080i version of the HBO broadcast? I’m a big fan of your AMC HD 1080i cap (it’s my go to Godfather), and thought that would be the best we’d have for a long while (and for a while it was), so this is a welcome surprise. Given that apparently Coppola is still resisting releasing this version on BD, the HBO broadcast is likely to the best we’re going to get for the foreseeable future, so it would be a a nice to see an upgrade from the 720p encodes floating around.

More OUT Rerelease Rumors from John Landis!

joefavs said:

Words Landis did not use:

-"Theatrical"

-"Original"

-"Restoration"

I forget who drew the distinction however many comments back between "theatrical" and "pre-1997", but the only thing we can be sure Landis meant was the latter. Which, as I've said, is fine by me and more than I'd hoped for. I don't need the mono, because I never use the mono on any of the bootleg versions I have (I'm also willing to bet that at least 75% of consumers don't even bother to find out about audio options and just play whatever the disc defaults to). I don't need completely accurate colors, because I kind of prefer the 90s home video colors anyway. I don't need the '77 crawl, because it's been Episode IV: A New Hope for the entire time I've been on this planet. What I do need is an official release of Star Wars with all the goofy distracting bullshit that's been added over the years removed. All of these features would be awesome in a prestige edition a la the Criterion collection, but I really think it's too much to ask for or expect before we know that that's what this is. If you're that bothered by the degree of accuracy, just think of it as another source for the projects that go on here. At the very, very least, folks like Harmy will finally be able to retire the GOUT. That alone is worth getting excited about.

What about basic fixes, like removing matte lines, travelling mattes, etc.?  I'm talking about the kind of fixes that don't involve new effects, or changes to the story, but the kind of cleanup that would go into restoring any high profile catalogue release.

Star Wars 1977 70mm sound mix recreation [stereo and 5.1 versions now available]
Time

I'm curious as to what the sources are for some of these amazing sound mixes heard on Harmy's releases.

I know that the 1977 surround track was put together by hairy_hen, and read how this was done and it's amazing work...truly.

The source for the LD tracks is obvious, but what are the sources for the SW 77 mono track?

Also curious about the sources for the lossless 1980 ESB surround, stereo and mono mixes.

As these are all presented in lossless with harmy's editions, I'm wondering if the sources were lossless as well.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone with insight on this...cheers.

Could be the Lowry equivalent of the extra grappling hook throw, a false memory.  I distinctly remember talking with people while waiting in our seats about the Lowry cleanup.  Then again, maybe the conversation did happen and we were just all full of it...

I listened to a few minutes of those tracks. Setting aside the low quality, they are really distracting to listen to b/c of the abrupt volume change during the narration.

I think this makes for most unpleasant listening experience, especially for someone who would be entirely experiencing the film through their ears...how it sounds will be important. I say find someone with a good voice and re-record it.

It's not as easy as just synching the sound of the 97SE mix to the DeEd because it has the narration in places where there is no dialogue, including the added bits (but @yoda-sama: it is the '97SE, so most of those changes you mention aren't there) but if you guys want to give it a shot, here you go:

ESB

ROTJ

The bitrate is pretty low but it's the best I managed to find.

Would you be interested in a track using the script from those files but with new narration over one of the original sound mixes?
That way there would be no SE sounds, no chopped edits and the sound quality would be much better.
I think I'll do it for myself anyway, so if you (or anyone else) are interested I'll share.

Wouldn't a new narration go against the idea of this being "preservation"?

This is possibly the most minor change of all, but since it was an SE change it must be fixed! I noticed that in the GOUT there is a large mark on the floor (and more smaller ones) near Leia's feet, and it's gone in the SE.

I couldn't post the image here, so I posted the link.

Hmmmm. I can't see any kind of mark.

Found it:

http://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-brhG81RrYHk/VAj_0FwgT_I/AAAAAAAAfzU/2vy5Wb-up5A/s640/ESB-shellcasings.jpg

They look like spent shell casings from Leia's blaster. I guess we were all looking at the windows for so long we missed the floor!

Are we sure that's just not something on the print? I mean, it seems to me that's the kind of thing that would be cleaned up in even the most purist's version of a UOT restoration.

Harmy (or anyone who can answer)...I noticed there are two audio tracks on SW 2.5 that aren't on ESB 2.0...the 1985 stereo LD mix and the 2004 Star Wars.com audio commentary. Were these tracks simply unavailable, and if so do we expect them to be in the future? Thanks!

As an aside, I have to admit I love the Cloud City windows. It's the only new SE SFX I really appreciated...really opened up the place and gave it a sense of space & awe, instead of looking like a hospital cooridor. It's properly gone in Harmy's version, of course, but I've always liked what they did there. And Empire with Harmy's colours and this as the only SE change would probably be my go to version for this film.

I've noticed it before, I just never said anything because there isn't a way to fix it without altering either the audio or video to account for it.

It is visible, but certainly not as much as a 2 frame difference would be.  If you're not looking for it, it won't ruin the film.  The GOUT itself may not necessarily be perfectly synched between audio and video at all times.

Next time we put something out, I want to make sure there aren't any errors, for the sake of being as professional about these things as possible.

Just to be clear, do you recommend adding the 42ms delay to all the audio tracks in ESB in MKVmerge?

Project Threepio (Star Wars OOT subtitles)

Your torrent software should let you do this. Mine (Transmission) has a panel that shows you different info about the transfer and one of those tabs is for the files it contains and you can check/uncheck them.

Right...I got that. But I'm just not sure which files I need to select.

Like I said, I'm looking for the graphical subs timed for Harmy's editions, English, full (not just the alien parts).  There are quite a few files there, and I'm not sure which ones match what I'm looking for.

Hey, I want to download the graphical subtitles (English, full) for Harmy's SW 2.5 and ESB 2.0.  I'm looking at the torrent, and of course there's a million files in there, and I don't want to download them all.

Can anyone direct me specifically to the files from the torrent I need to download? Or maybe just PM me a link to download these two files?

Thanks...and thanks for the amazing project.

Plot Hole in The Empire Strikes Back Discovered
Time

I want to know what the Rebel ground troops on Hoth with the blaster rifles were supposed to be doing.  Target practice for the AT-ATs?

Why didn't the Empire provide air support in the Battle of Hoth?

Why doesn't the Executor just nuke the Rebel Base from orbit? (it's the only way to be sure).

How can Han, Leia and Chewie survive in the asteroid without space suits?

What do giant space asteroid worms eat when they can't get Millennium Falcon? Subpart: How do mynocks keep their teeth sharp when power cables aren't around?

Why does the opening crawl say the Rebels are led by Luke Skywalker when they're clearly not?

Why does Han say this one goes there and that one goes there, when clearly that one goes there and this one goes there?

Bonus PT/OT crossover plot hole: If hate leads to suffering, and 3PO was made to suffer, did Anakin hate 3PO when he made him? Subpart: If Owen Lars, a free moisture farmer, had no use for a protocol droid in an environment such as Tattoine, why does Shmi Skywalker, a slave on the same planet, need one? To help program binary load lifters? If so, how does 3PO remember this?

More newly discovered plot holes and questions that need answering from Episode V coming soon.

Harmy's STAR WARS Respecialized Edition '97 - AVCHD and MKV now out!

Harmy said:

No, they are definitely not upscales - the BDs come from the same master as the 2004 DVDs - the 2004 DVD master was done in 1080p and some HDTV stations did broadcast it in 1080i, so those are native HD (high quality HDTV captures are now available on myspleen).

And there were native HD broadcasts of LOTR as well but only TTT was shown in the EE version - so the EEs found online were usually 1080p for the theatrical scenes and DVD upscales for the extended scenes.

Interesting...yeah, now that I think about it of course you're right, re: the BD's coming from the same master as the 04 DVD's.  Just didn't know they actually showed them on HDTV (not that I'm interested in them anyway...'04 is only slightly less offensive than '11).

I knew that the Theatrical LOTR had aired in genuine HD, and I actually did find the EE of all three films from an HDTV broadcast, but as you pointed out the EE scenes were upscales. I wonder who did this?

Thanks!
