STAR WARS: EP V "REVISITED EDITION"ADYWAN - 12GB 1080p MP4 VERSION AVAILABLE NOW

To do all the pan 'n scanning?

Garage sales or libraries are probably best close to home without resorting to having someone mail one...though that's also possible.

I could do it, though with my limited computer power to actually pan and scan certain shots (in Sony Vegas) could take a long time to do.

If anyone wants to recreate the widescreen look of Return of The Jedi on VHS, it would require adding extra space to the bottom black border, since they felt the extra space was needed for the alien subtitles for that but not for Star Wars!

I'm sure this has been discussed at some point in this thread but 579 pages is a LOT of reading so....

Since these clips and the final trailer were all encoded in 720p HD, is that an indicator of what the final film will be encoded in as well in addition to a standard DVD release?

Oh and a little off the point here - there was a guy in The Dark Knight who pointed out the most obvious things too (the cop that was with the 'undercover' Lt. Gordon). I wonder who played him. Hmmmm.....

You mean Nicky Katt?

After looking at the revised list of what will be changed, this one:

8. Fixing vaders "wobbly" helmet when on the gantry

isn't all that necessary because it makes sense that it moves a little:

When Vader fell off the platform, his helmet is clearly bent and crooked when he returns to throw objects at Luke. It wouldn't really be a fix to stop it from moving in the high winds during that scene.

Looks like much has happened here in the last several months. I have a LOT of catching up to do on the status of what's been done. A lot of pages to read here. That Star Destroyer comparison is phenomenal! (another adjective) ;)

I'm just a fan of what's been done and look forward to the surprises in store, in terms of how new and improved everything is. An observer, an audience member. Once "The Dark Knight" anticipation was in full swing back in June/July I had to go far, far away (oh how I loves that film...) and live entirely within that world for a while.

What I've learned through studying film music is that there are maybe 3 ways of going about composing the music.

2) To create a sort of "looney tunes" version. What I mean by that is in Looney Tunes, when someone hits someone over the head or falls off a cliff, the music notates this. Jerry Goldsmith was VERY much prolific in this sense (He even did the Looney Tunes Films lol). Cuts in the film are hightened by a change in music or a change in pace... explosions are notated with cymbol crashes...etc.

There's an actual term for that style of scoring. Funny enough, it's called "Mickey Mousing". Very close example with the Looney Tunes. :)

I don't know if this has been covered before, but with the color correction and effects enhancements, are they done in chronological order, or grouped together by doing all Hoth scenes, all space scenes, all Bespin scenes and so on?

Continuing to be amazed by all I've seen so far...

I agree fully with the use of the replacement cue for the opening, as it's more sinister and subtle. The original wasn't right for establishing the darker, more serious mood the film intended to be.

The scoring process is all trial and error, as a film can take on a whole new personality with music applied to it. It can literally make or break a film's tone, turn it from a serious story and world you believe into just a 'movie' and a lot of the time revisions are made to get the right mood, the right atmosphere.

Problem is you would have to remove the dialogue from it and replace it with the stereo track, which doesn't make any real difference because that DVD is pretty much all upmixed from stereo anyway, which is why I thought that Musical Journey DVD was a bit of a letdown. It's a shame because they could have remixed it from the original masters like the A New Hope score but they didn't.

I made that file just as an example of the kind of upmixing I do. Normally I wouldn't have done that particular piece of music but it was a short enough example from Star Wars, just to keep it relevant to the thread.

It's actually more of an "all channel stereo" effect, I assume created using the surround/pan effect in Vegas. Creating a discrete surround mix out of stereo depends entirely on the program you are using and the stereo recording mix. If there's a lot of monaural instrument placement, you'll get a more discrete surround effect.

Vader isn't Tarkin.

Look at all of Vader's moves in Empire: Surgical strikes, not mass destruction. He could have had the AT-ATs level the entire base, but he was after someone specific. When one of his officers failed to deliver those results, Vader executed him and replaced him with someone who could do better. Vader isn't about destroying Cloud City either, even after getting close to his goal. Taking control, not taking out.

As for music, while it would be nice to add the original Imperial music back to the Imperial fleet scene, the use of the March is pretty dead-on. Just don't add the (in my opinion, horribly cheesy) Imperial Probe attack music with those muted trumpets and whistles. Terrible!

I've made many DVDs with that program and when you set it to ac3 stereo and use the maximum bitrate, you get quality as good as PCM and don't have to actually use ac3 files at all.

For a true example, I made a DVD of your original trilogy scores with a setting of Dolby Digital 2.0 at 448kbps, and the total size was only 1.28GB.

I have a program called "audio DVD creator" that allows you to put music files onto a DVD (a simple picture with the track name is what you see on screen) and allows you to make the disc with either PCM or ac3 audio, depending on how much music you want on the DVD.

The program comes with a tool that can make a six channel WAV out of an ac3 file.

aside from that, I don't typically encode an ac3 until I've finished the individual channel editing, because of the hassle involved with changing it back.

That's part of why I don't like using Vegas for anything but encoding, because you can't import ac3 files into it.

Best, most efficient way is to convert the ac3 into a six channel WAV file, then edit /inspect that. I do it that way because I use Audacity to edit (cut/paste/fade) the WAV files, and Adobe Audition to create the discrete channels using the 'center channel extractor' filters and so on.

You have an ac3 file I can check out? I'd love to hear an example.

I never assumed you wouldn't notice, but I've just learned through trial and error that no freeware ac3 encoder can output a high quality 5.1 track, but they can encode a very high quality stereo track because the bit rate can go as high as 384kbps for 2.0 channel and even free encoders handle that nicely.

Vegas is such a bitch to work with that I only use it for the final step - the encoding.

I listen pretty much only to film music. When I try to upmix a soundtrack album into 5.1, I try two approaches depending on what is most appropriate taking the album's stereo mixing into conderation:

-attempt to recreate the discrete 5.1 mixing as best I can by hearing it within the film. Often with scores recorded in England (Abbey Road/Air Lyndhurst recordings) have a concert hall reverb to the rears, and aren't as discrete as Hollywood recordings tend to be.

-create a slightly more discrete Dolby ProLogic II upmix effect, adding a slight delay to the rears.

I find if a score has a lot of ethnic percussion and woodwinds, that makes for a more discrete mix than the average orchestral score since those instruments tend to be limited to the center channel and therefore don't bleed through to the other channels as much.

What program are you using to encode the AC3 files?

If you're using any type of freeware, then you're better off with mp3 because a freeware-encoded 448kbps ac3 5.1 track sounds as bad as a 128kbps stereo mp3.

I 'upmix' film music into 5.1 all the time, and I do it channel by channel as WAV files, then load them into Audacity and play them in stereo, monitoring and adjusting the levels using my headphones. I use Sony Vegas to encode the 5.1 ac3 files because it encodes with professional quality. When I play back the finished music on my home theater system, it works every time.

I normally work with 5.1 surround music then assemble them as DTSWAVs, for burning onto a CD - a DTS CD.

I was thinking one night about Vader's meditation chamber. This is completley a shot in the dark, but when Vader's helmet is being placed back on his head, there can be robot arms adjusting his mask and tubes coming out of his head. Then they all retract right before the helmet latches on. It's hard to explain, and probably harder for Ady to accomplish

PLUS

I know this is an old subject, but seeing vader in his chamber remembering padme is... now that I think about it, a stupid idea considering he is more machine then man, and can't really think on his own at this point.

I dont know. Were you thinking about something in the chamber scene ADY?

Sorry, but to me this makes Vader into a sissy....Vader is supposed to be a bad ass. Unfeeling and cold......which makes his decision to save Luke a dramatic and unexpected event. If we make Vader into a big pussy who is always regretting his decisions then he becomes a whole less menacing.....who wants that?
