John Williams' Music
Time
I remember seeing ROTJ in the movie theater on opening day in 1983 (I think I saw it 2 more times that summer) and being so moved by Luke and Leia's theme, and the church-like music during Luke and Vader's duel (right after Vader tricks Luke into coming out of hiding by threatening Leia). I remember buying the LP of the soundtrack and being so disappointed that that duel piece wasn't on it. I was thrilled when the Star Wars Anthology CD-boxed set came out, and I was FINALLY able to listen to that piece on CD.

I guess I wasn't the only one, because Ben Burtt mentioned (in the DVD commentary, I think) how so many people mentioned that particular piece of music to him, and asked where they could get it.

I agree, I think Williams' music went downhill on the PT. There were really no memorable themes, IMO, except for maybe Anakin's theme in TPM. I have to disagree with you about ROTJ, though. I thought the music was just as brilliant in that film as in the first two.

There were so many fantastic themes in the OT- Princess Leia's theme, Han Solo and the Princess, Yoda's theme, the Imperial March, and my favorite- Luke and Leia's theme.

It must be a theatrical print. But, didn't the SE DVD have burned-in subtitles?

I remember an interview with Mark Hamill, around the time Jedi came out, where he said that he'd agreed to play "old" Luke in the last 3 Star Wars movies (7, 8, 9) if George ended up making them.

There's a lot of things George Lucas and Rick "yes-man" McCallum claim never existed: the plans for 9 movies, the OOT.....

Seeing the capture of Vader's head, I couldn't believe the difference between the HLD-XO and the CLD-D704...WOW! I actually have a CLD-D703 (which is identical to the 704 except for the RF output) and it made me feel like chucking it in the garbage! (well, not really). Until I saw the capture from the XO, I actually thought my LD player had a pretty good picture.

A question:

Will you be using any shots from the Special Edition NTSC laserdiscs, since so many of the shots in those versions have been cleaned up, and have the matte lines removed ? Not talking about the "altered" scenes of course, just the scenes that are identical to the OOT except for the fact that they've had the grime removed and the matte lines erased. (Like the snowspeeder scenes in ESB- they look a lot better in the SE because there's less transparency in the speeders, due to the fact that they were trying to hide matte lines in the original versions).

That's not a dumb question, I was wondering the same thing myself. I imagine it would improve the picture, just like with any DVD. I don't think it matters if a DVD is 4:3 letterboxed-widescreen or 16:9 anamorphic (or 4:3 full-frame, for that matter), if I'm not mistaken, they should all benefit somewhat from a HDMI connection.

The last time you saw one of the Star Wars films
Time
The last time I watched any of the Star Wars films was when I made back-up DVD-R copies of the "faces" Laserdiscs, one set for myself, one for my nephew. I made a few mistakes and had to re-record a few discs, so I was pretty burned out on them by the time I was finished. That was a few months ago, and I haven't watched them since.

Since the new OOT DVDs are coming out in September, I'm going to TRY to hold out and wait until the new DVDs come out before I watch them again.

There's an "interesting" piece in a recent issue of SW Insider about this very subject. It's about how a new generation of people will now watch all 6 Star Wars movies in chronological order, so their reactions to certain plot elements will be totally different (read: ruined) than those of us who saw 4-6 first.

I still think if people haven't seen any Star Wars films yet, they should STILL watch 4-6 first, then (if they insist) 1-3. Although, most of the plot twists have been spoiled for even those who have never seen any SW films. Is there anyone who doesn't know that Vader is Luke's father? It's become part of our pop culture. One of my blabbermouth friends told me on the playground before I got to see the movie. She also told me about Luke having his hand cut off. Fortunately, I saw Jedi on opening day, so nobody was able to spoil the Luke and Leia revelation for me.

That's why I was thinking that. Perhaps, now that all six episodes have come out and the saga is over, the OOT is the only thing left that has not been released. And since LFL often relase multiple releases of the Star Wars films, perhaps this is just testing the waters. However, as mentioned, it's a catch 22, since this release could dictate future releases, especially with the 30th anniversary coming up. It's a vain hope, I know, and it seems like a foolishly optimistic, but who knows? That thought can help me sleep at night, anyway .

I'm feeling optimistic too, I was feeling disappointed that the DVDs aren't anamorphic, but now I'm thinking this is a good sign. Maybe the DVDs are limited edition because there's going to be something special for the SW 30th anniversary in 2007 (if the response to these DVDs is good, that is).

We don't have to wonder if he's testing the waters with these DVDs anymore- because he's basically admitted it already.

George-Now we'll find out whether they really wanted the original or whether they wanted the improved versions.

Thanks very much for that link.

$36 pre-order (AR) for all 3 titles...anyone found it cheaper??

Im waiting til Nov/Dec if I buy them as they will have hopefully dropped down as some of the online DVD sites have sales around then and its a low price I dont care so much about this anyway anymore Im personally more excited about XO Project and would rather give money to that.

The XO project does sound exciting, but is the picture quality really going to be better than the official DVDs? (in terms of resolution, that is.)

I guess we'll find out when the DVDs arrive on 9/12. It will be very interesting to compare them to the XO versions when the project is finished.

But y'know what I'm gonna do....wait I few months, and get 'em cheap on ebay. Doubt I'll ever even watch them. Why, you might ask. For the same reason I have 8 different VHS releases of the trilogy....cos I'm a hardcore geek and it looks good on my shelf!
I think that would be a mistake. Remember these are going out of print on 12/31- so I'm sure there are going to be a bunch of eBay sellers buying up a bunch of the DVDs, then selling them after 12/31 with jacked-up prices. If you want them- you should buy them when they come out.

I don't know about that..... I see this upcoming DVD release as a sign that Lucas is beginning to soften a bit. I really do think he's testing the waters, to see if those of us who've been screaming for the OOT, are willing to put our money where our mouths are. It could be that he's so insulated, that he really doesn't think that there are that many of us who actually want the OT, and thinks that most Star Wars fans feel the same way about the SE that he does.

If these DVDs sell big-time, I think it will be an eye-opener for him. He may decide to give the OOT a hi-def release in the future. Normally, I wouldn't be this optimistic- but the fact that the OOT is coming out on DVD at all is a BIG shocker for me- I never thought I'd see it happen, especially with the disdain that GL has shown for them.

Yes, but remember this as well-

These new DVDs are going to be limited edition, only available through 12/31. If you change your mind later and decide you want them- you're going to pay a lot more for them on the secondary market (like, eBay, etc.) It will make $19.99 or less a piece seem like a bargain.

Yes, it's very wrong- but that's the way Lucas treats his fans.

He makes us jump through hoops for no good reason.

See! He IS going to use the sales of these DVDs to gage the demand for the OT. He's probably just using them as a "test" to see how many of us want them (which is why they're getting the cheap-o treatment now) and THEN, if the sales are good, he MAY decide to invest some money into them for a future Blu-Ray or HD-DVD release.

He's a bastard- but we've GOT to buy these discs. I think the future of the OT depends on it.
