Do you need more support to engage?
Do you need more support to engage?
It looks nice on my 4K TV.
However, since it’s been years since I saw the film, and then it was the non-anamorphic DVD release, I don’t really have any basis for comparison.
That WOULD be exciting!
I don’t know anything about getting stuff scanned, but would gladly contribute to an effort!
hers? Can any of us really know?
Sad and ridiculous that we cannot.
Well, the Emerald City Comic Con us over. When I was exploring the show floor I was surprised a) to find three booths selling obviously illegal DVDs (expected only one or two) and b) find the SWHS at only one of them. I had also expected bootleg Blu-rays but only saw legitimate ones and those at only one of the three.
The SWHS was packaged badly in a thin case. Needless to say I left it there.
Fascinating, jolennon.
And thanks for a comparison. It’s enlightening. I may find myself switching discs to try to compare, but that will probably be an exercise in futility.
Is it odd that they would use the same master but tinker with the colours?
I’m personally a bit annoyed. The Disney Movie Club got me my copy a day early, so when I got home from work last night I tore open the parcel and — they accidentally sent the BD instead of the UHD. It’s going back to them today or tomorrow.
We don’t want to make more work for the moderators.
That said, perhaps account customization (thinking specifically of using a picture) could be tied to donation.
But it would create its own rat’s nest of tracking how long ago someone donated, let alone which donation goes to which account. (My donation came from a different email address than the one I’m registered under at OT – swhs(dot)geek says more about me than the address that’s just my name, but that’s the one setup in PayPal.)
I’m not sure when I first encountered OT. It was definitely after I bought a copy of the SWHS on eBay and before I purchased a KCCI disc of the SWHS from a member who would shortly be banned for selling his work.
Over those many years I encountered a community that’s made me laugh at times and reassured me that I’m not the only with a bizarre love of the SWHS. It also introduced me to Adywan’s Revisited version of Star Wars and let me see what this thing called The Phantom Edit was all about. I got great feedback for my own project, got valuable help in response to random questions, and I hope to someday do a followup to that disc.
And lately I’ve encountered some people doing amazing work preserving projector film. That never would have crossed my mind a year ago.
Thank you, Jay, for all those years. And to Anchorhead and SilverWook for the fact that the site and its community has a future.
Small donation made.
I’m curious if there’re data for Disney wanting desperately to be out of the physical media game.
I’m looking forward to the 4K release of The Little Mermaid next month. And although they aren’t heralding the disc’s release, its 4K status could mean they’re in it for a little bit longer.
That said, I hate the extra extras on the digital releases. There’s no reason the deleted scene for The Force Awakens or the isolated score shouldn’t have been on the discs. I can see that as an attempt to lure me away from physical media, and I thank YouTube for the dispersal of the scene from TFA.
I did a quick Google search (ewok adventure 720p) and found a page that offered a 720p version. Or claimed to.
Dimensions turned out to be 540x960.
Quality seems good but not the resolution we’re seeking.
And right you are. I’d completely forgotten that they were presented in better than television quality elsewhere in the world.
Thank you,
To the best of my knowledge, the only official digital release is the double-sided DVD.
You asked about a fan-made upscale, though… I haven’t encountered one.
I’ll echo this statement.
Not sure if it helps, but I was one of the donors for The Little Mermaid and in a PM I was explained why that one is also limited to donors. All I can say is that the reasons sounds legit to me.
I hope the panel went well!
It did go well! I’m guessing there were around 400 people in the room. And I’m hoping video of it will surface at some point.

Finally!
I’m browsing eBay, and I came across a set of four SWHS trading cards. I’ve seen them there before, but today I’m going to actually buy them.
The question is: were there only four, or should I keep looking for another or two?
(And now that I look more closely at the photos of the cards I discover that I already own them. They’re from the first series of Star Wars Galaxy, which is in a binder somewhere at home. But of course I already purchased them. Oh well.)
In addition to those three (I think there’s only three, is there a fourth?) cards, there is also a set of 11 SWHS trading cards given out by the Star Wars Store with orders back in 2008, and a series of cards from the 2007 Topps 30th Anniversary set including 5 cards with pictures from the Holiday Special and 2 cards featuring simulated animation cels from the Holiday Special.

I well remember the cards from the Star Wars Store. I have a small jpg of them, but was unwilling to make a purchase just to get a random card.
It looks like what I’m getting are three of the five 2007 cards and one duplicate of the Star Wars Galaxy that I already have. Thanks for the note on what to look for!
Definitely interested.
Will bookmark this and contribute when able. (Sorry that it won’t be for a little bit.)

Thanks,
Stumbled upon a treasure trove of high res promotional stills from the Special:
Some of them are absolutely gorgeous. Thankfully there aren’t any of Ralph McQuarrie’s Kashyyyk exterior painting. My wife would not understand the $500 price for such a thing…
Should’ve posted the subtitles’ source:
Are there any high quality subs done for the HS in English? For the latest TV master release I mean. I’d like to try to translate it. Would be fun to have a project Threepio type of thing for this one too.
I’ve got a set of subtitles, but I don’t know how great they are. Also don’t know which version of the Special they’re timed for, but they go through an hour, 50 minutes, and 32 seconds.
Original site says they’re for The.Star.Wars.Holiday.Special.1978.VHSRip.XviD-DaPOO.
Quite a few years ago there was a bonus DVD for the SWHS. It collected all the worthwhile clips I could find that somehow related to the program.
And since then there’s been a small explosion of potential content – enough that the raw video collection could fill a single-layer Blu-ray.
So I plan to pick the best of it and create a second edition. A dual-layer DVD this time to accommodate the additional material, and also so I can include a few guilty pleasures (four SW Galaxies Christmas videos I found on YouTube years ago).
The thing is, it’s been years since I religiously searched YouTube for new content. My life went through some major changes, and that was one ritual that got dropped.
So if you have a favourite bit of video, especially if it wasn’t on the first edition of the disc, could you please message me so that I can take a look?
Many thanks to all of you for keeping the memory of the SWHS alive,
Oh wow, congrats on the panel Scott! Do you know if it will be recorded? I’m sad I’m gonna miss this.
I’ll echo that. Very much want to see it! And my wife tells me there’s no way I’m traveling from Seattle … which in fairness I did already know.
I’ll echo nnnaomi – definitely looking forward to seeing the results of this project, and definitely would have helped to fund it if I’d been aware back then. (I think I learned of this project by way of the 35mm restoration for The Little Mermaid, to which I’m proud to be a donor.)
Something that would make Beauty and the Beast a movie again and not what feels like a cartoon.
