I think it’d also be best if we remove Finn trying to tell Rey that secret of his, that being his Force abilities. It’s never resolved/answered at all.

Might not be right for Ascendant, but another member is working on a clever way to reuse those scenes for a different context. Maybe they will share it soon! Hopefully it will work.

Not sure what the new context would be. Making it seem that he’s into her seems wrong seeing where their story lines went.

I like that! At first I wondered if ‘Anakin vs. Obi-Wan’ was a good fit but it seems appropriate. The music drop off helps accent Leia cutting in.

Is there unused score on the soundtrack that was originally meant for this duel?

I don’t think there is, except for the score for the second half of the duel that ended up in the film.

Alternatively, we could keep the ship in there, coloring it black to match Kylo’s from TFA. Then we could also put in the deleted TLJ scene and have someone say in the background something like, “Supreme Leader, your shuttle is ready”.

Maybe, but it could start to feel more like a fan edit and less like an actual movie.

Really digging this man; keep up the good work. It be cool to show maybe an establishing shot of Vader’s castle if possible, but it great either way.

I was thinking about adding that as well, but it may get a bit too complicated with the opening in the movie since the castle barely at all connected with the wayfinder’s location on Mustafar.

Here is my attempt at the opening. I added the opening shot of Mustafar from Rogue One, as well as doing my best to color grade it to match The Rise of Skywalker. I even used music from the soundtrack that was part of the opening that didn’t make it in. Some VFX work can be done to remove Krennic’s shuttle.

The color correction works, the music isn’t quite there. I’d recommend using the track “Journey to Exegol,” which is what plays when Kylo battles on Mustafar.

That is the track I used, it’s extended on the soundtrack but wasn’t featured in the movie. Give it a listen, just after the crawl fanfare.

Wrong track, that one is called “Fanfare and Prologue.” It was intended for the deleted scene of Kylo talking to the Oracle, and doesn’t really fit into the final movie. The one Dom was talking about, “Journey to Exegol,” is the one that plays immediately afterwards. It has a neat fusion of Kylo’s theme and the Mustafar theme from ROTS, and it would be really cool to hear during an extended opening scene.

EDIT: I see you corrected your post, so this post is kind of pointless now. I would like to hear the other track during the Mustafar scene, if someone could be able to do that. I haven’t been able to figure out this whole editing thing.

I can give it another go with the track you’re talking about.

I could try a concept clip of how the opening could go. I’ve been thinking about it, and I’m not sure if using those two shots of Ben in the bridge from the deleted scene from The Last Jedi would work and would probably feel even more abrupt to cut from him on the ship to him in action on ground.

I think we can keep looking for more footage of ash filled forests and lava, but I think using the opening shot of Mustafar from Rogue One with some color correction and VFX work to remove Krennic’s ship can work.

I’ve also noticed from listening to the soundtrack that some pieces of John Williams’ music were not in the movie and the soundtrack features extended score. Listen to the opening track.

Here is my attempt at scoring the fight with Sam Kim’s cover, already done by Jar Jar Bricks. I’ve tried to time the music with the fight in a better way.

I liked having the music swell up when Kylo appears out of the water but otherwise that looked good.

I won’t lie, it worked well during that moment too.

That’s actually how they did it in the original too. There’s no music until Kylo comes out of the water

Yeah, I know, I just tried it in a slightly different way to see another way it could work. Not to mention, it was near the end of the cover. I had to extend parts of the cover to fit well with the visuals, and based on that, I didn’t know if I had anymore room to extend without the music sounding too abrupt.

Using footage from other movies besides Star Wars can be a benefit too. Just look at Hal’s edit of Episode III. The footage of Natalie Portman and the baby work really well when modified and inserted in properly.

You are aware that the extra footage is from a BBC documentary about one of Jupiter’s volcanic moons. 😕

Oh, I am. I’m just giving a suggestion that doing more of this could help with some pacing issues for this movie. Agent9, a fan editor who has been absent for some time, did an amazing edit of Man of Steel while also using footage from other movies to help some pacing issues, and for the most part, it worked really well.

Clearly you can see here that nothing really works with this clip as the video quality of the added shots is very poor as well as the added music.

Alternatively, if we’re going with the original movie intro, I used a deleted scene from TLJ to add a few more seconds to it. The shots line up perfectly, even the TIEs. I realize it’s not much, but perhaps we could put some sort of voiceover on it now since it’s a bit longer?

Nice idea, maybe if we can somehow have landscape shots of Mustafar’s surface and a land battle before cutting to Kylo Ren in action, it would help things play out much more smoothly.

There are shots of that in Rogue One, although I can’t think of any suitable from Episode 3

Yeah, but the planet’s surface looks completely different than it did in Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One.

I’m starting to think that without any other footage or delete scenes to work with, it makes sense to go ahead and tell us Kylo is searching for Palpatine. 😕

You could say in the crawl that he’s searching for a mysterious, yet familiar, Dark Side presence that has reemerged. Don’t say that it’s Palpatine in the crawl and let his first appearance be a surprise, even if he’s in the first Act.

So I just put the song over the fight on the Death Star Wreckage. Didn’t do any work to it at all (as I am not very good at editing), and it seemed to work pretty good:
https://vimeo.com/397812921
PW: fanedit

Now that is what I’m talking about! I think parts of Samuel Kim’s cover needs to be extended for some music cues of the cover to play perfectly during some moments. A good example would be to have the music heighten when Ben looks at the oncoming wave when locked in saber combat. Thank you for putting this together. I can’t wait to hear back from Hal on this.

I wonder if they didn’t have Leia say “always” because they decided for her body to vanish subsequent to that moment.

I wonder if it’d be at all doable or even a good idea to have her vanish right after Ben’s resolution after talking with Han.

Sounds like a pretty nice idea to me, that might be the reason why you didn’t hear her speak to Rey as the Jedi spoke back to her.
