What about the slaves?
Time

It was another line thrown in by Lucas with little to no thought. Although it was forgotten about in the next two films, it does have repercussions...

...Anakin is scared of Padme dying because he dreamt it, yet none of his other dreams have come true!

Padme should have just said "Don't worry Anakin, remember you dreamt about freeing the slaves? That never happened did it? You putz."

Try to take it easy with the Lucas bashing.
Time

George Lucas is a liar and a fraud.

He has released these films THREE times in 3 years. The greed of the man is astounding. He knows people like Gomer will lap up anything that Lucasfilm can defecate out into the market.

He says 100% that he will not release the O-OT, then he sees there is money to be made, so he goes back on that - which Gushers said he would never do because of his integrity and magical vision. But he doesn't want to do what EVERY OTHER filmmaker in the world would do and release the films straight out in good quality with good extras. No. He has to piss about - lie about the quality, force consumers to by the 2004 turds AGAIN in order to get the grainy originals.

A win-win. IF it sells he gets more money. If it doesn't he states that no-one wanted the originals and then releases the films next year with more changes and different covers.

Why can't he release the O-OT like any other movie is released. What is so difficult? If he prefers the cartoony, diluted, colour saturated crap of the SEs then he can watch them to his greedy hearts content.

I am fed up of his lying, contradictions and complete cluelessness as to what made Star Wars great. I am fed up of him pretending to know what he is talking about by using words like "Motif", "Maguffin" and "vision".

The man is a joke. He has destroyed his own legend for all but the weak-minded who need a hero to worship. A fluke 30 years ago does not a good filmmaker make. And the world has seen the truth.

Its all about the money.

The Chronology of How My love for Lucas has fallen

Well, speaking for myself...

I DON'T spend ALL my time on it. In fact hardly any. I am a professional with a full-time job, a partner and am studying a Masters Degree. I have lots of hobbies and interests and like a lot of different movies.

I do like to pop onto the Star Wars boards and have a rant. Its a break from real life. And also:

1. Hate is just as powerful as Love. With the added fuel of knowing what could have been.

2. There is potential for humour in bashing that isn't found in the ass-kissing world of the fanboy. The Bashers Sanctuary on TFN was proof of this.

Debating lightsabre colours and theorising Yoda v Maul?

or

Parody, ridicule and bash the state of modern Star Wars with people who have standards?

I know which one I would rather spend precious spare time on.

The Chronology of How My love for Lucas has fallen
Time

Well, the original poster captures my thoughts nicely - if anything, I may have been a bit quicker to see Lucas' true colours.

There are still millions of fanboys who worship the ground he walks on but more and more fans are seeing the truth.

One fluke in 1977 and then a steady decline. If you see him in interviews he really doesn't know much about the story or the characters - contradicting himself or relying on rationalisation squads.

Yoda, for example. We all knew who Yoda was. We knew the character. Kershner knew the character. Lucas didn't. In Lucas' head, Yoda is a CG frog with a lightsabre, always up for a fight and who talks in ridiculous sentences. He is dumb, violent and has relations with wookies.

Lucas really doesn't have a clue.

The Official Lucasfilm Response
Time
The DVDs being released in September will contain two versions of Star Wars: Episodes IV, V and VI – the Special Editions (which represent George’s vision of the movies) and the first versions, which will be included as bonus material. We hoped that releasing those “original” movies on a bonus disc would be a way to have some additional fun with the debut of the movies as individual DVDs. We certainly did not want it to become a source of concern or frustration for any of our fans.

So many fans have requested the original movies, we wanted to find a way to bring them to you. But since these movies do not represent George's artistic vision,
We want you to be aware that we have no plans – now or in the future – to restore the earlier versions.

I really hate this "earlier version" crap! These 3 films that altered the cinematic landscape and stamped themselves in to popular culture; I never saw "First Draft" written on any of them.

Lucasfilm is just some bizarre cult where everyone is brainwashed. How anyone can believe this 'vision' thing is baffling.

And, if you think about it, what changes in the SEs can even come under the heading of "Artistic Vision" ?

Is it:

a) The slapstick droids

b) the "now you hear it now you don't" scream?

c) footage culled from a subsequent movie?

d) Re-dubbing actors?

e) atrocious CGI?

f) replacing actors!!

g) Pink lightsabres?

e) Gungans?

Which of these is "artistic vision"? And do any of them improve ANYTHING?!?!?

Lucas is an idiot.

Why Hayden's acting in ROTJ was bad...
Time

Lucas's treatment of this scene is inexcusable and cannot be justified.

We have Shaw's body with Hayden's head bobbing around on top of it. The Hayden footage could be from ROTS or it could be Hayden in the canteen. The point is Lucas cares so little for these films, the story and the fans that he does something so lazy and stupid.

It is bad enough how the younger ghost changes the redemption story we have all grown up with. But THIS??!!?

Lucas really is taking the piss.

Lazy, lazy Lucas.
Time
This isn't to start a debate on whether Lucas should keep making changes or not. That is a discussion that rages on elsewhere.

Something that is apparent to me is the cheap shortcuts that Lucas takes when messing about with the Trilogy. These films mean so much to so many people but these quick fixes would seem to reveal a lack of respect for the fans and the films.

Some examples:

1. Luke's scream

We all know the bizarreness of Luke's added (and since removed again) scream as he falls in ESB. What is stranger, however, is why Lucas saw fit to simply use the Emperor's scream from ROTJ and not record anything new. Very obvious to fans.

2. Vader's arrival

For reasons known only to Lucas himself, the 'Star Destroyer' arrival scene added to ESB is footage from the Death Star arrival in ROTJ. Same docking bay, shuttle and background. Even Death Star Commander JerJerrod is there to greet him - clearly mouthing the words he says in the subsequent movie. Of course, it is not "an unexpected pleasure" as Vader's newly dubbed line on Cloud City is much more expository than the original.

3. Boba's new voice

Whatever the merits of changing the voice, few could argue that the reading is very poorly done. I doubt that Temuera Morrison even watched the scenes he was dubbing for as he rushes through his lines.

4. Added Naboo Scene.

Lucas thought that this planet should be included in his continuing montage of celebrations. However, simple re-using a scene from TPM and flipping it would seem to be a lazy way to do it. It would appear that Naboo has remained 100% unchanged through Imperial Rule!

5. Hayden Ghost

Having decided that there is no good in Vader after all and that Anakin died in episode 3, Lucas decides to add 'evil Anakin' into ROTJ. There is some debate as to whether this was filmed especially for ROTJ or whether it is taken of Hayden in the ROTS canteen. Certainly the acting, expressions and total lack of eye line would support the latter.
What is certain is that Lucas felt no need to put Anakin in a relevant costume, instead opting to cut and paste Hayden's head onto Shaw's traditional robes. Robes that Anakin never wore.

If Lucas is so passionate about his vision, why the laziness in implementing it?
