Star Wars coming to Blu Ray (UPDATE: August 30 2011, No! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!)

Well Lucas did not replace Tippett's stuff with cgi did he?

The Walkers are still the same. The Rancor is the same only recomped, the tauntaun has not been changed as far as i am aware not even on the blu ray.

Muren thought the Walker sequence in empire should have been completely redone in cgi and Lucas said it was not necessary, it was Lucas who saved the original scenes from being violated by cgi.

Yeah, I got the impression from one interview that A LOT of the visual fx changes were actually Muren's and other ILMers doing, not Lucas. George probably is barely aware of half of this particular stuff. A lot of it was solely warm up for the prequels, despite all the hot wind about "technology finally catching up".

Wasn't the genesis of the SE primarily Mos Eisley?

Wow. That's just shear genius. I actually never minded the scene before, and yet this works on so many levels.

But that's not really my problem. While watching the original, I could not stop thinking about the Nooooooo! It's there, even when it isn't. CURSE YOU LUCAS!

Ah, so I'm not the only one with this problem. Even now, I'm still staring at a blank wall while Lando pulls Leia away in Cloud City. It's just too damn hard to completely forget about the most grievous changes at times. You know it's not there any more, nor is it going to be there, and instead of focusing on what is, all you can think about is what isn't, and how glad you are or how peeved you'd be if it was.

Count me in as one that just doesn't see the point of the "NOOOO". That scene worked perfectly as is, with Vader making a decision while hearing his son's pleas. Now, it's like he's vocally trying to convince himself this is wrong to act.

Though I must say that as awful as this is, so far the changes have been much more subtile than I expected. Maybe I just don't know about the others, as I'm still digging through the thread. Some minor effects work, pointless and bad looking touches to R2 and Wicket, and some horrid sound changes. Honestly, I expected more. The new CGI is atrocious, but that's no shocker either. The SE was always half-assed and well below ILM's level. It always did irritate me even more because of such. Why should that change?

Still can't see myself buying this set, as much as I want the extras. I also agree that it's odd Lucas has no problem releasing unfinished deleted scenes, but can't release the theatrical cuts in decent quality.

What does the blu-ray set have to offer?
Time

Just saw that. Unsurprised at the Ewoks, since CBS did the same with the Gorn in the Star Trek remasters as a cheap way to "add more life" to them, but the "Nooo" is really left field. Vader's silence was perfectly fine, and resonates more. He's making his choice, and no time to articulate it there. The no is meaningless melodrama. It's not horrid, but completely unnecessary.

And I'm a guy that absolutely loves the Radio Drama's take on the scene. In that, he's screaming, "MY SOOOONNNN!" and has a great dialog with the Emperor about putting him down. What makes it is the line about Palpatine being Vader's master, but not Anakin Skywalker's.

We're also getting that new Krayt Dragon call. Who knows what else.

On the plus side, they sound like they might color time it properly this time, and have fixed the swapped music.

Which version/release of the Star Wars movies do you watch and why?
Time

Of the Classic trilogy, I mostly stick to my ancient TR47 laserdisc rips for pure accuracy, or The Classic Editions that came out years ago, with the general exception of Star Wars since he accidentally left a huge CGI shot in the version I have. Though I've been wanting to replace them due to the awful colors and so on. For Empire, there's the recent Adywan Theatrical Edition that's I've been watching.

I'm pretty behind on the latest fan concoctions. I have Darth Editous' original edit, and it's not bad if I'm willing to watch a fan take on the SE. He fixes some things I don't mind fixing, unlike the majority of Georges stuff. Haven't seen the revisited stuff, as I'm not too interested in Super Special Editions, though the unofficial fan nature makes them still better in my book.

I've not heard of Harmy's. Perhaps I'll look into it. Are these the ones purists like me are looking for?

New deleted scenes, probably for all six movies, in HD.

Say what you will, but that has me sold.

In my case, no, thanks. I've never seen an added scene in the original trilogy that did anything but mess up the pacing for me. Guess I'm forever locked in the mindset of the original theatrical runs. In fact, the Blu-ray set has absolutely nothing to offer to me.

You and me both, buddy. This'll be exactly like the DVD set with me; I'll want the extras, but can't justify the purchase as I'd never watch these versions of the films. I'm mostly wondering what can of messing they'll do this time.

I might consider the prequel set down the road, as I'm not as purist on those, but I doubt I'll get the classic set myself. Shame too, since I should be frothing at the mouth for these. They're just not going to have the films I love.

Damn, and I was already saddened over Leslie Nielsen's passing. :(

You and me both, buddy. I sudder to think how the rule of three will come into play.

To think I watched some of the bad version of ESB last night too on TV. To think we'd lose him during the 30th as well. He's one with the Force now. Rest in peace to the best director a boy, a girl and a galaxy ever had. Even Lucas couldn't ruin that film (at least too much).

This move doesn't surprise me at all. After the GOUT fiasco, could we really expect him to give them a proper Blu-ray release? The new extras sound cool, and I'll probably give the extras disc a rent like the DVD set, but also like the DVD set, I have no intention of buying this.

I also agree about the reasoning. It was restored in 1996, and I'm sure a lot was digitized to overlay the new effects. Even without a full 4k scan of the original, all they'd have to do is the altered portions anyway. So I'm not swallowing that excuse. If a fan can cut the SE into the OOT, so can Lucas.

Chances are they will be the DVD copies. Complete with bad colors and all. Though I'm sure they're cooking up plenty more alterations to better align it with the Clone War era he seems to greatly prefer. Didn't someone mention awhile back that they'd actually caught some of the continuity errors they'd made in the SE, and planned to fix them. It's ridiculous how they keep changing them yet let those slide. The whole SE just reeks of half-assed rush jobs.

THE OT SOUNDTRACKS SALVAGE - SWESBROTJ -"remastered"(so far)+ LP's (Released)
Time

Interesting concept. I've owned the SE cassette tapes for ages (I always called them the best thing to come out of the SE), and never really had a problem with them. I've never really heard the CDs outside of the occasional mp3 rip. The idea that something sounds better definitely makes me want to look into it. Especially since I've been mostly using my Sansa of late. The record rips are a nice idea too. Though the use of the real Jedi songs is the best part, as I don't need to switch to my old 83 tape.

Info: Hold onto your old Little Mermaid discs!
Time

I only comment because way back when, I set up my first two channel system. I was recording TLM off the Disney channel to preserve my original VHS. The downmixed stereo for the 97 sounded vastly different compared to the 89 stereo. Thanks for the info. It's good to know these 5.1 remixes have some creditability to them. DVD or no, I'll never let those tapes go.

While we're on it, my big concern recently is Sleeping Beauty. They're releasing a 7.1 mix. I know the source is six channels, but the original is stereo. A fifty year old movie in 7.1 just worries the heck out of a purist like me that wants the Bkuray (you've got to love the misleading add the touts the new 2:55:1 transfer by having a cropped widescreen image morph into a fullscreen one).

So this is lost? I"d been using the Platinum as a test disc lately and remembered this project in my annoyance over the sound. I never did get around to actually finding where you uploaded it. Look's like it's back to my VHS copies (original 90's VHS with 89 sound mix and Disney Channel recordings with the 97 stereo - the first time I'd ever noticed a difference thanks to my then new stereo system. The two alone are vastly different.)

Info Wanted: DBZ (4:3) Petition and Letter Campaign Effective Jan 28th
Time
I'd say that you should take their advice. Write the letters. Go out to anime conventions and ask for signatures. If you do it right, you should get hundreds, if not thousands. Fanime Con in San Jose is looking for fan panels. Why not suggest doing one on this topic (or sneak it in to another if it's not permitted). Heck, talk to the reps that will be at the con. Online stuff doesn't count for much as it's easy to sign a website petition, but a lot of work to do it in person.

Mahoromatic Limitless (Released)

Given all I've seen, I somehow doubt that. Especially if it was badly written. Ever seen Grave of the Fireflies, X the Movie (which was also badly written but about as depressing an ending as anything) or Gundam 0080 (even the original Zeta Gundam ending for most people)? They'd have to practically blow up the world to top those.

I think I get the picture though. I'll have to finish the series first.

Hmmm... I thought I already posted this.

The concept is interesting. I've been watching Mahoromatic lately. I'm not sure about removing the time limit concept. It's been one of the key things that's seperated this show from your run of the mill maid series. I like the idea a lot, as it expresses that her time is limited, and leaves you wondering how far they'll take it. Remove it, and you have a maid show with some combat thrown in. I have only seen four episodes, but the concept sounds like it removes some of the depth of the show.

I ake check this out after I've seen more of the series.

Heresey!!

In all seriousness, no. DYRL is a completely new production. While it's the same basic story, the scenes are vastly different. Entire subplots are restructered, dialogue vastly altered. Useing ADV's dub might work had the film been an edit, but it's not. That'd be one major hackjob. Even then, you still wouldn't be able to faithfully do it. The Zentradi also speak Zentran for most of the film.

Robotech would be even worse, since they changed the concept of Protoculture. It wouldn't mesh at all given its importance in the film.

So, no, that's a terrible suggestion, grounded in impossiblity and impracticality.

Thee is a fandub in the works.

Though the japanese cast is pefect any way...

The best possible source for macross do you remember love is the japan region 2 dvd release.

that does not have english subtitles but I am sure there are good fansubs out there somewhere.

Indeed there is. Look for NLA's version. Aside from some minor typos, it's damn near flawless.

the best possible letterbox source is the perfect collection laserdisc.

Actually, it would be the afomentioned DVDs. As you stated, they are anamorphic. Widescreen's better than Letterbox.
