Rise of the Rebellion: A Rogue One Edit (Released)

OK, I guess I’ll say this once more, with feeling ^^:

Hi. I currently have ROTR [No Moe Intro] with english subs by MalàStrana.

I also have ROTR [Survival Edition], but it doesn’t have any subs, which makes it a big problem for me and many other folks out there. Of course it doesn’t make DigMod’s amazing work any less good, but I think it should just be ‘good practice’ to ALWAYS provide at least english subs with each and every fan edit. For example, that’s already the case with all Hal9000 SW fan edits.

So, two questions:

  1. Could somebody please provide english subs for the Survival Edition?
  2. Will there ever be a v3 solving the Scarif hard drive plot hole wisely pointed out by @regularjoe ?

Thank you.

I think the best aproach would be to totally excise the “mistery” music from the establishing shot, letting the love music linger a bit further.

THIS. EXACTLY THIS. Let the love theme begin sooner, so that it can last longer, making the transition to the next scene less abrupt.

I’ve made some testing, and indeed the love theme should begin at 47:59 (frame change to Anakin’s face), which is about 5 sec sooner than in the current version. That way the love theme starts climaxing when they kiss, and it can last 5 sec longer until the next transition.

I keep my fingers crossed for this, since this is one of the most important scenes in the film. Hal, what do you think? 😉

I actually did sync english subtitles to TCH a while ago for my own use, send me a message if you need it.

Well Yuri_Kenobi, of course I need it 😃 But I’m not the only one. I think lots of people need it, and I’m sure DigMod would be happy to add a subtitle file to TCH. So please, make them available in this topic so we can all enjoy them. Thank you.

Hi DigMod, I think I wasn’t clear enough, sorry about that.
By subtitles I meant only ENGLISH subtitles !!!

There may be 7 billion of people who don’t have English as native language, but most of them will still be able to watch and enjoy an english movie IF it has english subs too. That was my whole point. 😃

All Hal9000 SW releases have english subs. Rise of the Rebellion has english subs. Only TCH doesn’t.

That’s a good breakdown of the dilemma. Fortunately a version of LOE exists with both endings. However, you’re right that the overall edit of Ep3 was crafted with that end in mind.

OMG, I didn’t even notice there was a LOE ‘Alternate Ending’ version!

Time for me to comment, and thank Hal once again for a mind-blowing job on these edits ! 😄 I think we don’t emphasize enough how much time and effort is put into all this. “Labour of love” may be an understatement.

I have also read some of the first pages of this thread, and I would like to comment especially on the Padme’s surviving topic, as it may be the most debatable point of the whole experience.

I’m among people like Malastrana and others who believe that Padme should remain dead (well, not dying because of the ridiculous “losing the will to live” droid line which should definitely be replaced, lol, but for other reasons).

I also understand Hal’s reasons and his impossibility to revert that change even if he wanted to, because he basically built this whole episode (maybe even his whole trilogy) about the idea of Padme surviving. It was a bold choice for sure. But in the end it’s a choice that I wouldn’t have made personally.

Here’s a couple of reasons why I think Padme should remain dead :

  1. Like some mentioned, a very minor inconsistency towards future episodes isn’t enough IMHO to justify deleting one of the most beautiful/powerful/emotional scenes in the whole movie : the funeral, and also the fact that Padme holds the Japor Snippet that Anakin gave her. I’m a sucker for those romantic details, sorry.
  2. After the end of the Mustafar duel and Vader (well, Anakin, lol) barely surviving, the whole movie is coming to a dramatic climax, and EVERY scene contributing to that climax must be kept : Vader’s “NOOOO” scene, Padme’s funeral, and of course the Tatooine final scene which has wet my eyes more than once (unless it was Tatooine’s dust ? ;p ).

Of course it’s very tempting to go towards the ideal of consistency between trilogies. But here it’s done at a great expense, so in the end I think the losses overcome the benefits. There is no perfect solution : either Padme dies (which creates a minor inconsistency), or she lives (and then there is no funeral). But Padme dying may be the lesser evil.

I’m very grateful that Hal did such a great edit anyway, and of course if we don’t like some of his choices we are always free to watch other edits. I guess the perfect Ep.3 edit doesn’t exist yet. Hal mentioned L8wtr’s edit, but even if it was still available, it would be DVD resolution, and in 2020 I would generally not watch anything below 1080p, especially for Star Wars movies ! 😃

Episodes I through 3 are on V6.
ANH is on V2, with V3 planned.
ESB is on V3, with V4 planned.
ROTJ is freshly on V2.
TFA is on V4.
TLJ is on V4.
TROS is on V1.

Thanks, that helps a lot! I’ve been able to successfully check all episode versions AND get Yub Nub v2. Happy!
You may hate this question but… any vague ETA for ANH v3 and ESB v4 ?
Once again, thank you for all your work. 😃

Hi guys, how can we easily keep track of Hal 9000 versions, and be sure that we have the latest version for each of his Star Wars fan edits ?

  • Is there an index of versions somewhere ?
  • How can we identify our own versions ?

So far I have :

EP 1, 2, 3 (but which versions ?)
EP 4, 5 [CSE] (but which versions ?)
EP 6 [CBE, Yub Nub] (in progress, it’s not available at the moment because Hal is updating it)
EP 7 [Restructured v4]
EP 8 [Legendary v3]
EP 9 [Ascendant] (but which version ?)

I think a table with all the latest versions and their dates of release by Hal would be ideal. 😃

Hi guys, I like those new improvements 😃

Allow me to insist on this: somebody PLEASE provide subtitles for this one. If I’m not wrong I have subs for all other Star Wars fanedits by Hal9000 and DigMod. Only this one hasn’t them, so I can’t watch it properly.

For me and all other people on Earth who don’t have english as native language, this would be a much more important improvement than any reworked beginning, beautiful as it may be.

DigMod, I hope you’ll consider it, because I can’t wait to really enjoy TCH. Thanks in advance! 😃

Hi everybody. I’m looking for subtitles for this fan edit (I can’t watch it without, sorry 😦 ).
Would somebody have them, or would somebody be up to the task, please?
English would be perfect, french would be a nice add-on.

Thanks in advance!

PS : also looking for subtitles for “Rise of the Rebellion” (they do exist but they aren’t available anymore in the corresponding topic). Thanks again!

Wow, such a nice reply! I really appreciate. THANK YOU.

Duly noted your info about the viewing order, I’ll have to think this through before the big moment.

Thank you so much for even recommending other people’s edits! Such honesty is truly amazing. So I take it that I should try to get:

  • Your edits for Ep.1-9 (well, those that are available of course)
  • DigMod’s edits for Solo and Rogue One

Totally understand the x264 part, makes sense, no worries at all. FYI and for hypothetical future releases, x265 aka HEVC allows for 35-45% of size reduction without any visual loss, both in objective and subjective tests. More info is available online.

May the Editing Force Be with You! (“I have a good feeling about this”… 😉 )

Star Wars Episode I: Cloak Of Deception (Released)

Hi Hal9000, and congratulations on your incredible work!

I’m a Star Wars fan since 1977, and I’d like to introduce my beloved GF to the whole Star Wars saga in real “theater” conditions (we are lucky to have a home cinema, and we are in lockdown, so…). Since the original movies hold some big inconsistencies that you accurately described, your edits sound better for a first-time viewer (that is the most important point for me: to be able to watch them as “real movies” without ever noticing that they’re fan edits, except for the credits of course).

Here are some quick questions (sorry that I didn’t go through the almost 800 previous comments).

  1. What viewing order would you recommend with your edits? With the original movies I was leaning towards Machete order, but do your edits allow for a real Ep.1–>Ep.9 chronological order? And would you leave Ep.1 “to be viewed separately” like Machete, or would you include it in the whole “saga marathon”?

  2. Same question for the two SW stories: how would you include them in your viewing order?

  3. I’m assuming, maybe wrongly, that all your 720p/1080p edits are x264. Will you consider x265 10bit in order to reduce size without losing quality?

Thanks again!!!
