I agree with Darth Solo, seven, and others that there is no sense in belaboring a point that has been absolutely, irreversibly settled. Indeed it should go without saying that any post in this thread may be disregarded. And us newer members are less aware of what has been so definitively settled. ChainsawAsh's take on the SE Wampa and feel that a non-reveal leaves one wondering as to the importance of the Wampa (purely a plot device that doesn't need to be seen, a deficiency in the costume, purely symbolic) whereas a reveal functions as looking at things from Luke's point of view (which is why we only saw flashes of fur up to that point), but Adywan's sensibilities shall prevail and shall be appreciated.

I also have to say I'm impressed at some of the details that are caught by many on here (look of various planets). I have mixed feelings now about the crawl which I had never thought about before. Part of me doesn't want the original preface messed with...but would prefer a logical and accurate description of Luke's role (at best, the crawl is misleading). I suppose this is similar to the (non-)debate over the Wampa.

I do agree with Fjodin that the additional Wampa scenes were probably one of the few worthwhile SE additions. It always seemed awkward that the Wampa was never shown in the OT - other than flashes of fur. So while you have decided to not include it, I am also one who would enjoy it if it were included as a bonus.

I agree that the Wampa should be kept consistent. We can always rationalize discrepancies with various theories (male/female, multiple Wampas) but those are just excuses for the defects in the original costumes (or so it appears to me - which also seems to be the root cause of nothing but flashes of fur).

I felt the Jedi Rocks sequence was atrocious so am happy to hear that the decision has been made to cut it out.

Fjodin's desire to have every corner of the films fleshed out is understandable but I agree with most others that less is usually better. One of the greatest things about ESB is the conservative approach taken in its effects so as to not overshadow the story. Digital effects often have a disturbingly cartoonish quality (e.g. Joh Yowza) that stands in sharp contrast to physical world they're inserted into.

Fjodin, I'm a lowly new-comer like you to this discussion, but I think the objection to using EU stuff is that it really is not part of Star Wars. At least to those of us with a more puritanical point of view. There may be some good and creative ideas out in the universe but just because they happened to be licensed by Lucasfilm doesn't make them genuinely Star Wars. I've enjoyed a lot of EU books but I give them the same regard as well-written SW fanfiction (the only real difference being licensing and royalties). If Lucas did adopt EU elements in E3 (I say "if" only because I don't know which came first - E3 or the EU usage), that would not encourage a further breach of the wall between cinematic canon and EU flights of fancy.

I have always wondered how they got the AT-ATs down onto the planet, but the objection is that it is not worth answering this question by adding an element not originally part of the movie. I can't imagine how the Wampa survived before the rebels showed up with their Tauntauns but I don't think it is necessary to delve into the made-up world of Hoth ecology just to satiate such wonderment. [Perhaps C-3PO's carbonite line could become an explanation of Wampa hibernation..."He should be very well protected, if he survived the freezing process that is." -lulz, sorry]

If the barges had appeared in the PT...then it might be acceptable to most people. That's my take on the EU disdain some of us have :)

You do offer some interesting ideas about adding a bit more richness to the battle of hoth, however.

I also agree that the OT should not be modified to fit the PT. Any unevenness exposes the flaws in the PT, not the OT.

And while it's getting ahead of things, I've always hated that Boba Fett 'dies' in ROTJ. Best to leave it open to the potential for his survival, as he does in EU stories. There is no reason to step on those story lines. As I understand Adywan's philosophy, this is about preserving Star Wars while refining the technical and fx side of things, not rewriting it (at least not the OT).

[ROTJ was terrific. Jabba the Hutt, Yoda, Boba Fett, another Death Star, Admiral Ackbar, the Emperor, good story line...and yes, I even liked the Ewoks. Could the battle have been orchestrated in a more believable and realistic manner? Yes. But as Yoda said, "Judge me by my size, do you?"]

Cliff was in SW?! Ever since the prequels came out, I drifted away from following Star Wars discussions, stopped getting the Insider, and just continued to appreciate the OT in a more casual fashion than before.

And why is there such debate about Han's coat?

Did any debate arise while Adywan was doing ANHR over whether Snaggletooth should be tall or short, red or blue? lol, If so, I'm sorry I missed it. I'm being facetious, since it was just Kenner's error...

This card:

Is from the wizards of the coast Star Wars game. I'm talking about the original decipher game, it was a location card, but I cannot find a picture of the card itself. And i'm too lazy to dig it out from under my bed.

Lol, ok. I don't have a copy of ESB here to see what it really looks like. One of these days I shall buy GOUT DVDs.

Is from the Star Wars CCG. It's most likely not real, the card game used a lot of doctored images for cards, especially if there wasn't a good shot of it in the movies.

Were there different versions made for the CCG? This CCG image is different from the picture above - is  this particular CCG image just an actual movie still?

What the hell is Star Trek??

I'll pretend I didn't read that. Sure, Star Wars and Trek may have an unofficial (and overstated) rivalry, but personally I am a trekkie as well, and Trek is a monumental franchise in science fiction history. Even if you don't like it, it is still important- it came before Star Wars, and was the first serious science fiction show on television. Here's a wikipedia link.

And if you were joking, I stand as a Trekkie fool. :P

But this is all extremely off-topic.

I agree, all rivalries should be limited to purists v. lucas apologists, otherwise things will get very confusing. Though I will say that I'm probably disqualified as a Trekkie since Voyager is my favorite of the series. And as I understand it, it is not held in such high regard by true fans...

Back to the topic: I was wondering if the shield generator model was created from scratch or made from existing items, like so many SW props...

A little OT:

With all the talk of Magnoliafan's Balance of the Force, Clone War, and Phantom Re-Edit 1.2, I went searching my collection for these edits as I thought I surely had them.  Apparently, I don't.  They also appear to be gone from the newsgroups as well as torrents.  They still pull up on a seach at myspleen but with no seeders.  If anyone would be willing to help me get  copies of these three edits, please pm me.  However, if they are painfully outdated and not worth my time watching them, I'd love a heads up, too! :)

Back to the topic at hand:

I'm amazed that you've caught up to where you left off pre-quad.  I tip my hat to you, sir.  Would you be willing to share the ideas you've got cooking for the generator?

I have Magnoliafan's Eps. 1 & 2 - they are definitely available as torrents (avi), though there are few seeders. Still it only took a day or so for me to get them. I'm currently going for ADigitalMan's version, which has 1 active seeder :( What are the upload limitations of rapidshare and the like without an account?

I'm usually pretty talented at finding obscure things on the net...I'm amazed at how rare such a picture apparently is. I emailed a guy referenced on TK409's site as having many reference photos (models, drawings, etc). He sells CDs of the images. Hopefully he will have something. Otherwise, has anyone looked at any print resources yet?

Great to hear about the equipment, Ady. Hope it's good to you!

I've started watching MagnoliaFan's TPM edit and...I still don't get it. :p Granted, I've only seen the movie all the way through maybe twice, but I've never fully understood what was going on. Something about a Trade Federation and slavery and some moron with long ears? I dunno. I wish they had just started the movie with the Jedi council learning of a child that could participate in pod races and 'maybe he's force sensitive' and all that jazz, and they're just sending Ginn and Kenobi over there to see, and thus would begin some wacky adventures. Bah, what a mess...

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I don't understand any of the political schemes in the PT. The Trade Federation's motivation was never clear to me, the role of Dooku, any of it. I'm not dumb and am very interested in real life politics, but found the PT's political motivations and actions convoluted and vague. What I liked in magnoliafan's edit is that he tied the Federation's motive to slavery, which the movie otherwise dwelt on for no other reason than to make some kind of vague moral point (with terrible dialogue like "I am a person, and my name is Anakin"). Maybe I just didn't care to figure it out. A major problem with the PT is that it lacked coherent motivations and reasons for many developments. Padme and Anakin fell in love because he leered at her and spouted pickup lines like a desperate stalker? Hold on...I'm gonna stop yet another anti-PT rant and go out and try Anakin's method to pick up women. If it works, I will have more constructive advice for when adywan edits the PT.

I know you don't care Jor Tallen, but if you go to StarWars.com, there is all of this new information explaining what Dooku was doing and why, what the Clone Wars were all about, etc., etc. I generally felt a bit confused about all of the politics and reasons for stuff too, but with all of the new Clone Wars stuff at SW.com, they have added all kinds history and info that I never knew,  clearing up a lot of the confusion, really cool, you should check it out. Ya....back to Empire.....peace....

I didn't say I don't care, but the movie was so obtuse in those areas that my mind didn't care to try to sort it out. If as you say, knowing history not shown in the movies clarifies things, then it's good I didn't waste energy trying to make sense of the movies alone....which is the problem that hopefully adywan can fix. But I will check it out, since I am largely ignorant of EU stories and the like. Back to the Empire!

I just watched magnoliafan's edit of Episode I. He did an awesome job making a coherent story line, while removing the bulk of unnecessary silliness. Only complaint is that the new subtitles were overly crude at times and alien voices were a bit awkward. He made Jar Jar genuinely funny at times, which was impressive. I look forward to seeing what you can do, adywan. I think "Lucas Apologists" would be the correct term for those who try to justify anything GL does...

Did you watch the avi file or the DVD? The dvd copy has 4 sets of subtitles- the newest version (ADigitalMan '04) is much more refined and less crude- i.e. no Jar Jar swears. :P I can agree with you on the alien voices though. Personally, I got used to it within 20 minutes or so.

And @ Stewie, I'm interested to see what you're doing to the prequels. Can't wait to see the finished products.

Was the avi file...only one I found a torrent of (grr, hanging preposition)... Where can I find the iso? It was just too obvious that it was often audio in reverse. And recognizing what sounded like spanish and maybe german tracks mixed in...

God, you're really gonna hate me when i get to the PT. I'm going to be ripping those movies to shreds, beyond all recognition. lol

Sounds good, Ady.  I don't hate the prequels as much as most around here, but it is a huge stretch to call them "great movies."

I think that the area next to our names that currently have our "ranking" that they're considering getting rid of should be replaced with things like "Purist" (original versions or death), "Revisionist" (changes/prequels aren't bad, but need tweaked), "Lucas Fanboy" (Lucas knows whats best), or others things we could choose in our profile.  That way you'd know who you're dealing with without them harping on it.

After discovering tales of brilliance of Adywan's ANH, I found this site. I still have not watched it but am looking forward to it very much. Otherwise I will also be following the ESB progress here. As far as the prequel Emperor is concerned the problem was not that he looked different, as one might expect from less age, but the fact that he looks fake. He looks plastic with contacts bordering on the absurd. I thought that the CG Yoda was very well done, though I'll always prefer the more tangible puppet version. On an even more unrelated note...in the ROTS scene in which the Emperor battled Windu, why was the audio so wild? The Emperor's voice sounded overwrought by audio editors. I heard that Ian lost his voice at one point. My suspicion is that they were compensating for that.
