The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

Looking at some of the examples being posted I’m wondering if people are calibrating their screens. I’d recommend grabbing a cheap colormunki or i1 probe at a minimum, there isn’t a lot of use colour correcting if your screen is adding a blue tint in the shadows, and a green tint in the highlights for example.

I’m not sure if you’re referring to my terrible corrections, but I’ll take your advice 😃
But specifically, maybe it’s just a coincidence, but I did add blue to the shadows and green to the highlights on purpose 😄

Do you hate ROTS emperor?
Time

I hate what they did to him: they turned him into a silly clown 😄
If you think about it, even in ROTJ he is kind of silly, like when he does his usual evil laugh, but it was much more subtle: for example, we could hear him laugh, but they never actually showed him laughing on camera like they did in ROTS (except maybe once when Luke cuts off Vader’s hand, but just for a moment).

P.S.: 😄 In the Italian version Palpatine is extra funny because he sounds like Gollum when he says “I’m too weak!” (he’s in fact dubbed by Gollum’s voice actor 😄 )

The Original Trilogy restored from 35mm prints (a WIP)

😃 I did some regrading for fun (I’m not a professional), trying to match a frame from Leia’s kiss scene to this frame from jedi1.net:
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191520 (I started with this frame)
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191522
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191523
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191524
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191525
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191547
http://www.screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191526

I think it doesn’t look too bad, but I don’t know if it’s consistent as well: I’d like to see what it would look like with DrDre’s tool.

EDIT: I did another pass to make the regrade look closer to the reference’s.
EDIT2: I did another pass too!

A new Mr. Plinkett review - The Force Awakens!
Time

Just watched Plinkett’s new review and I think he makes again very good points (😄 yet with half of them already discussed on this site, as doubleofive said!). Considering their earlier review, I thought this was going to be only about TFA’s pros, so I’m glad he discussed both pros and cons objectively. Good review! 😃

Should the prequels and TFA be considered canon?

I never understood why people thought something like a Thrawn Trilogy adaptation was a possibility for the ST. The mere fact that the story would be spoiled already was reason enough for it to stay off the table as an option.

The possibility of a live-action Thrawn Trilogy adaptation went out the window after the '90s, anyway.

By 1997, Carrie Fisher was already visibly aging, but she was still young enough to play a pregnant woman and do all the action that the story would’ve required of her. By 2014, though? No. It would’ve been impossible. They would’ve had to cast a younger actress to play Leia, and who would’ve wanted that?

It could still be doable as animated series/movies, as a guerrestellari.net user suggested some time ago. This way, it wouldn’t be necessary to have the main actors still in their 40s to work.

I myself think everyone should decide for themselves what is canon.
Personally I consider each Star Wars trilogy as a distinct canon (after all, each one of them is the product of its time, both in style and inspiration). My favorite Star Wars canon, though, was left unfinished: after ANH and TESB, I’m still waiting for Lucas’ and Gary Kurtz’s alternative ROTJ 😄

Hopefully this time the deleted scenes include something “more meaningful” that can be inserted in future edits. But there will probably be just more 10 second snippets with timecodes etc, haha! I’m just wishing for almost anything to replace / alter the Rathtar scene. 😛

I like the way you think… 😉

I’d like to see more scenes spent on just the characters, their background, their dream and struggle, but I doubt there are any. A nice addition could be been something related to Ren and his table of ashes.

It doesn’t have to be anything super overt. It could just be Storm Troopers gossiping about Kylo’s peculiar habits.

:\ That would be a “bummer”. I’d rather see Ren pouring Lor San Tekka’s ashes on his table while thinking over his death.

Fan-Made Star Wars videos found on Youtube and similar sites
Time

Unfortunately, I only released few Star Wars videos so far, I wish I could find time and resources to complete a true fan-edit :\

TFA Teaser #2 with the original Luke and Han Italian voice actors (they both died long ago, so I had to sample them from other movies):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1uTAuBPykQ

Star Wars Advance (trailer for a videogame mod I made):

“Samurai Qui-Gon” Test (sort of Star Wars meets Kurosawa, or something 😄 ):

The Force Awakens - teaser trailers with (more) natural colors:

A “Shadows of the Empire” cutscene done editing Star Wars footages and dxn2000’s dubbing:

[…] And Poe explains when he and Finn reunite that he was thrown from the crash (which is what happened to Finn) and that when he woke up he couldn’t find the fighter or Finn. No more explanation necessary and it’s really not that hard to believe.

Finn was thrown from the crash, but still landed near the fighter. So, was Poe thrown 1000 meters away or is Finn that short-sighted he couldn’t see him? 😄

JEDIT: nevermind, I rewatched that scene: Finn wasn’t that close to the fighter either, my bad 😄

I had softwares, techniques developed over the last 15 years, a unique process recruiting data from multiple scans, across multiple frames, so I can recover color and detail that was never seen on any print. And in some cases it’s probably approaching the negative, and in some odd and unusual cases it’s surpassing the negative (for reasons).

My guess is that the odd and unusual cases he means are, for example, the infamous sandcrawler and landspeeder shots and maybe the “Red 5 Standing By” shot, that is all those shots affected by noise and channels misalignments.

This text is brillant and explains many things I’ve been takling about here: http://birthmoviesdeath.com/2016/06/28/star-wars-the-force-alluded-to

Thanks for sharing the link, a pretty long read 😄 . Here are my thoughts about it:
-I don’t think “Hulk” should’ve tried to find special meanings behind Abram’s directing: I may be wrong, but it looks to me that he mostly follows a pattern, always making sure each scene has funny lines, drama, action and references to previous movies, which is probably why sometimes his characters’ actions feel forced or not really impactful;
-I agree some scenes felt too short, like Poe’s “death”, they could’ve used a bit more build up and drama;
-actually I like the way the lighting is staged during Han’s death scene, but I agree the scene needed more build up to work at its best;
-yes, we could’ve definitely used more background informations about what’s going on in the Galaxy and the Republic;
-absolutely, I agree the movie itself relied too much on nostalgia.

Ok, but didn’t Mike do something like superposing/averaging Tech prints (supposed to be made by the same IP ?) to get a level of detail which is not on one of them individualy ?

I think so. As far as I understand, averaging prints should at least make a restoration close to their master, and I think Verta actually said in a podcast Legacy has as much detail as the negative, in some cases even more detail. I think it’s great, and because of his meticulous work, it’s definitely a step forward to what we have now, not to mention it’s a cleaned up theatrical version! Also, if Disney were to commission him an official restoration, he would probably be able to use the actual negative, so I’ve no doubt Legacy would be near perfection if released.

It’s too bad this footage has yet to appear on any Blu Ray extras.

The main problem with this scene in the movie is that it seems like Yet Another Crap Looking CGI Thing.

Yeah, I think some of its close shots look fine, but overall the scenary looks too static, unnatural.

[…] Jango then goes to Geonosis specifically to lure Obi-Wan there, so that Dooku can take him prisoner.

Why does he try to kill him in the asteroid field and leaves only when he’s sure he died, though? Supposing this was part of the plan, I think Jango really wasn’t aware of it.

EDIT: It may be that Palpatine’s plan was just to reaveal the existence of the clone army for the Republic, so this would explain why Jango tried to stop Obi-wan from getting on Geonosis. Some time later, they would’ve eventually found out about the droid army anyway, maybe by Dooku himself.

Info Wanted: The Force Awakens sans English Alien Subtitles?

doubleofive said:

They worked damn hard to digitally recreate the original English theatrical subtitle font, timing, and placement, and you just want to get rid of it! 😉

:\ fixed: by the way Dinsey handled it, no one is able to watch TFA as it was in theaters, except for those living in English-speaking countries.

That is kind of arrogant for releases in non-English speaking countries. That isn’t typical of Disney or previous Star Wars releases.

I think this might take the cake for most hypersensitive pointless bitching I’ve ever seen on the internet. Congratulations, sir. You overcame a lot of very steep competition to take that prize.

Have you ever seen a movie with burned-in subtitles written in a language you don’t understand? Do you know how jarring it is?
EDIT: What’s annoying is that, since they did it right for TFA’s theatrical run, they could’ve done it right for the home-video as well, but they deliberately decided not to.

There is also the small thing that Palpatine needed the Jedi to discover the clones so that he could start his war. As I understand it, Palpatine ordered Jango to use the toxic dart on Zam with the knowledge that the Jedi would eventually trace it to Kamino.

I could be wrong, but I’m not sure this was actually part of Palpatine’s plan: I think Palpatine would’ve eventually revealed the clone army’s existence to start the war, Obi-wan’s findings being just an opportunity to speed up the process.

He also must have ordered Dooku to erase the planet from the archives, which would draw attention to itself when combined with the existence of the dart.

I think they erased Kamino from the archives mainly to hide the existence of the clone army until the public opinion’s would’ve finally accepted it to fight the the separatists.

It then follows that Palpatine must have ordered Jango to go to Kamino and wait for the Jedi to show up, and then lead the Jedi to Geonosis so that the war could begin.

Palpatine and Dooku might’ve used Jango to bring a jedi to Kamino, but he clearly wasn’t aware of it: in fact, as soon as Obi-wan shows up on Kamino asking for questions, he flees to his employer on Genosis, while making sure to kill Obi-wan.
The only thing that makes no sense to me, is Jango saying “I was recuited by a man called Tyranus on one of the moons of Bogden”. Even though this doesn’t reveal anything important to Obi-wan, why saying this anyway? 😄
