Tho while I’m not a fan with cropping the film, if you had too I’d suggest instead cropping it to the IMAX 1.43. I saw the BVS IMAX scenes in that aspect ratio and it’s simply gorgeous. I think an overlay for it should be available in the link I sent to the curious and if not I can happily share mine.

Thanks! This is great. I love having more movie in the fram, but on my home screen it just feels a little wrong. Too much screen bare same with bars at top and bottom of screen.

Does anyone have a guide on how I could crop this to 1.85:1? (Would fill more space than 16:9). I haven’t sourced a copy yet, but I may have to wait the blu ray release and rip a copy. I could go through the cropped movie and make note of all the scenes which which need re-adjusting. The whole movie seems like a long chore to do such a thing.
I’m a newbie to video editing, so this would be a slog.

Note that for most people’s tv’s, a 1.85 would not “fill more space” than 16:9 (which is 1.78). A 1.78 crop would perfectly fit a standard widescreen tv with no black bars at the top or bottom. A 1.85 would have slight cropping at the top and bottom of a standard 16:9 widescreen tv. The three main formatting options for a ZSJL edit would be to keep it as-is in IMAX format (1.33), crop to 2.39 to match Batman v Superman, or crop to 1.78 to fit a standard widescreen tv. I personally would opt for the 1.78 because this leaves as much of the original picture intact as possible on a standard tv, while not having black bars on the top or sides. It would also not be jarringly different from BVS should someone wish to watch BVS and ZSJL back to back.

Thanks, I stand corrected!

Sounds like everyone is on the same page. I’ve spent most of today arguing with people about 4:3 and 16:9. Would love to see a letterbox version.

I’d definately wanna change the score in a few places. Didn’t think it contributed to the scenes at all.

I couldn’t get through the 2017 theatrical cut but I will revisit it now and see if it’s worth saving anything.

EDIT: Did anyone get the “1000 generations live in you now” via with the Superman scene? Who ripped who off first?

I feel a lot would be lost cropping to full 16:9. Anyone know the ratio of IMAX frames on home release? I.e. when there’s no black bars but it fills the screen? I feel cropping to a lesser extent than 16:9 to preserve much of the vertical as possible, while filling up the home screens.

Maybe a “tilt and scan” 16:9 version? I get that the aspect ratio it’s presented in is part of Snyder’s vision, but the ratio makes no sense for home video consumption (which is at the moment the only way you can see this film). Hell even Christopher Nolan, who actually films on 70mm IMAX and has a reason to use that aspect ratio, converts those sequences to 16:9 for home release in order to retain as much of the “IMAX experience” for home viewing as possible.

I agree - not sure on the technicalities, but a better aspect ratio. I never like black bars across tip and bottom, but at the sides is terrible. A lot of his frames don’t need to include as much- there’s space over heads, there’s whole torso. I’d rather fil more of the screen. Converting nearly 4 hours of frames though- never going to be an optimised conversion without a studio input.

Is it wrong that I would like an actual copy split into 6 chapters like a TV series? A little more digestible to watch without having to skip back through again (as much as I love a 4 hour movie, I sadly have children!)

As for edits…I will get back to you. I’m I’m bit of a completist. And as much loathing I have for whedons input, not all of scenes were terrible (I like to think of the actors too).

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar, chasing whispers of a hidden power that would allow him to destroy any threat to his rule…

Resistance has been RE-kindled.

Resistance is the word that keeps it in keeping with the sequels, and it’s not that this is the first resistance.

To suffocate (STIFLE may allow a swifter sentence read and fits with the imagery) a growing uprising, the tyrannical First Order has silenced communication between neighboring systems.

While Rey, sole heir to the Jedi, continues her training, General Leia Organa has dispatched her brave agents across the stars to unite the disparate rebelling worlds.

Following a previous comment by Krausfadr, this reduces the redundancy. Also not sure about the word brave. It seems cheesy, and is a given considering the general feeling of suppression from the first paragraph. Then again, the theatrical used the word diabolical. Which made it feel a bit spoofish. Personally I would go with “dispatched agents”

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar, chasing whispers of a hidden power that would allow him to destroy any threat to his rule…

I think the last section works

Jamesleaf, thanks! Pedantry makes for a good end result.

I’m glad you think so. I almost didn’t post it, but I was beginning to feel too much of a tourist. There’s a lot I don’t like about my change (or edit of the two previous crawls, I should say - mainly the transition to the sentence on training), but such a tight word limit makes perfection difficult. I’ll have another look with fresh eyes. I also like the idea of The Resistance dispatching agents, rather than Leia (she did step back at the end of TLH, and I feel she had a moment of letting the others lead. It seems logical her best move would be to delegate (plus, “we are what they grow beyond”" and all). But that would make it far too long.

To move crawl discussion for this project into its own thread, here’s my current draft. Could stand some tweaking yet.

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER
Across the galaxy, the spark of hope lives on. To suffocate a growing uprising, the tyrannical First Order has silenced communication between neighboring systems.

Attempting to unite the disparate rebelling worlds, General Leia Organa dispatches her brave agents across the stars to fan the flame of Resistance.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar in search of a rumored Imperial fleet that would allow him to destroy any threat to his power…

Regarding the debate around overusing imagery of flames, it can be a bit cheesy, but it’s better to embrace the imagery than to half begin using it and flit. To move between different imagery in the same context is jarring and usually comes off more pretentious and forced.

Both this and another crawl I read are good, though I found both had bits the other lacked (mentions of Rey and Luke is missing here, while the other didn’t flow quite so nicely as this).

Also, being a bit pedantic, but “Attempting to unite the disparate rebelling worlds, General Leia Organa dispatches her brave agents across the stars to fan the flame of Resistance” reads well and has clear meaning to most, but it’s construction is confusing - from a technical perspective it raises 2 purposes - uniting the world and fanning flames of rebellion - in terms of construction it makes it seem like her agents are fanning flames of rebellion in the hope to unite the disparate worlds. (Pedantic I know, but it jars to read as a result). I’m sure the agents act as ambassadors and speak to world leaders, opening dialogue…etc, etc, not just stand on street corners preaching to rebellious folk in the hope all worlds then unite (I know it’s not implied, but it’s certainly possible given the sentence structure).

Anyhow, not really much change, but I tried a slight difference. Only issue is 91 words may be a fraction too long to fit with the constraints of a timely crawl.

"Resistance to the tyrannical First Order was all but extinguished, until Luke Skywalker’s valiant last stand sparked a new hope. To suppress growing dissent, the First Order has silenced communication between neighbouring systems.

General Leia Organa has dispatched agents across the galaxy to unite rebelling worlds and further fan the flames of resistance, whilst she continues Rey’s training in the ways of the force.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren has traveled to Mustafar in search of a rumoured Imperial fleet that would allow him to destroy any threat to his power…"

Don’t think I’m completely happy with it, but it’s late and it might be easier to let you all tear it to shreds instead 😁

On a side note, I really am not a literature pedant (usually), but am writing 2 books (no publications, just a wannabe), and my background writing is mostly scientific. Literature boffins may disagree with my interpretations wholeheartedly, but being far from video editing savvy I thought I might pitch in my two pence if I can help for this (my main bug bears with the film were plot contrivances rather than structure, and that is unlikely to be changed) I’ve been watching the thread very enthusiastically.

That being said, I wish I could rent out a theater and have a nine-day viewing of this whole thing with y’all. Hmm… maybe to commemorate whenever this is complete some sort of streaming thing could be arranged.

Probably not, though, right? Eh.

You know, that would be something. I have a toddler, so a streaming marathon is probably a no go for myself, and being such a newbie and certainly no editor, I’d feel a bit of a fraud - but your misconstrued comments about sir Ridley made me wonder if any of you awesome editors had ever met. Just perusing and having now seen a number of these edits have highlighted quite a close, like-minded community that probably work better together than most actual movie studios (well, obviously…). Might be nice to have a face to a name, especially given the climate.

My problem with Rey killing her parents is it goes against the idea that she could ever convince herself they’re coming back.

Not really. It’s pretty obvious Rey has repressed childhood memories.

I agree. I had a lot of difficulty with an adult growing up in such a hostile environment as Jakku clinging to such a notion - seems logical to have turned her into the tougher get on with it kind. But she clings to this notion that they will come back as child might - young teen at best - there’s an emotional resonance to that that the movies never touched on. I was actually optimistic having watched TFA that this would amount to something more - her having killed her parents and repressed it would be that kind of trauma to make her cling to their return - she’s repressed memories of their death and needs them to come back desperately - it would mean she hadn’t done it. The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. And it gives a real sense of struggle - until this point I considered her good / bad conflict to be, dare I say it, “Disney” at best (I shouldn’t have said that. Never set foot in the deep dark woods - the big bad mouse will be after you!..Sorry. Too much time with a toddler.)

What if it were something similar to what Anakin wore in Return of the Jedi? With the brown cloak and everything.

And if Hal goes with Sebastian Shaw for his ROTJ edit, Hayden Christensen’s ROTJ body could be up for grabs without it being a repetition of the previous imagery (though whether some technical wizardry to use that for Ben is beyond my know how - I leave that all of you. Hence why I stay quiet and just read usually. But it’s exciting!)

Complete Saga Blu Ray Covers
Time

Hi

I wanted to attach blu ray covers (struzan covers) to include episode 1-9, in addition to Clone wars (enough for 1 14mm case - compressed episodes on disc for personal use), rebels, solo, rogue one and Mandalorian.
I forgot resistance even existed so sadly have not included this.

I apologise for lack of credits for the art - I had not compiled where these were from as I made them, but no art work is my own, just compiled into covers using libre office draw.

I will upload the ODG file for anyone who wishes to alter them at some point

Any of the above would work. And it doesn’t matter that it is not ancient, it just doesn’t work for anything other than an 80s nostalgia trip (which im all for, except for an actual important plot point). The convenience of standing in the correct position is one issue, as well as the why? Why would a Palpatine ally (or anyone else) put a wayfinder in a fallen wreckage, create a dagger to match up with the wreckage and hide the dagger. The why for something like this is important, otherwise it is just terrible lazy writing (which of course…).
I could get on board with sith sorcery allowing the dagger to shape this way…but it’s a leap…

Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this, but the part of ROS that jarred the most was the Goonies dagger moment. It almost insinuates that the dagger was an ancient Sith relic, able to point to a wayfinder. When she held it out like the Goonies medal to the wreckage of a 30 year old wreckage in a raging ocean…I nearly face palmed in the cinema. It insinuates the wayfinder was put in the throne room after the wreckage, that the wreckage has not moved since…and the motive behind such an action is unfathomable.

My idea was to use the dagger held out and insinuate it points to the wayfinder by the force (it’s a sith relic after all). I wondered if there was a way to put a noise across the top (one ring style whisper maybe). Or Maybe sith cultists noise from the end of the movie (phase in and stop when it’s pointed to the wreckage?)
In this way, it means it is Palpatine’s wayfinder from the days of the empire, hidden in a vault in his throne room. Not returned by someone to an impossible-to-reach wreckage.

I tried that approach once, but the results don’t look very good at all. It might be the grain layer I slapped over top of the films. Piping the project through Compressor from within Final Cut looks great. But rendering it to a lossless file first looks terrible.

Me neither, but newby to all this. And I only discovered the site 6 months ago (window shopped for a while, let’s say). I’ll make them work, I’d just like to make them work in as high a quality as possible. I haven’t the Google Drive space to share the iso files altogether if & when I do, but I’m happy to share. My aim was to make some very simple menus if possible, but the file to blu ray is most important. And I’m just glad of these edits existing, so I am just querying. Really not a complaint.

As to quoting the above, I just Wondered if you may have a suggested Rate Factor as you mentioned a loss in quality when trying to do a lossless encode. But if you have no suggestions I shall have a play around. As to whether 4.0 or 4.1 makes a difference, Google was little help. Conflictig ideas (following one trail of thought no, following another yes). So again, I can play around with this. I was more hopeful that any others who may have previously commented in this thread have ever made it work. But thanks for your replies, and patience for the newby’s excessive questions

Easier question: what settings would be as close to yours as possible, in the hope the encode simply removes whatever issue is causing the blockiness

I know you use a 4.1 level (at least that’s what tsmuxer tells me when I load your files) - I just need a suitable Rate Factor to ensure that I encode with (assuming constant rate - though if I use max bixrate then that is apparently irrelevant, but would take longer as I understand. Then I simply need to set a max bitrate / file size?)

I know many people are no longer using blu ray, but I will happily share with anyone if I can get this to work.

It’s a small issue. They work plugged into PS4, though the media player is poor and sadly I have a Sony TV and again, usb is terrible. It would simplify life to watch blu ray. I have managed to get your ESB to work by re-encoding with handbrake, though I think I did a lossless RF, ultrafast encode with a 4.0 level. Looks good, but not quite so good as your original (I don’t think, but it is a hard comparison to make). I was wondering if 4.1 would be noticeable better.

It will work, but I’d like to watch these in best possible quality (so far I have a feeling they will be my go to cuts, and really looking forward to your ROTJ).

On a side note, your 97 ROTJ Audio, gout sync (for 4k83) still has yub nub rather than victory celebration, and wasn’t sure if this was intentional (like I said, utter newby to any video alterations, so I have probably misunderstood what the audio file actually is).

Thanks for the reply

Really sorry to add extra bloat. I’ve struggled to get any of Hal9000 amazing edits to blu ray (even following the suggestions) without major blocking and lag of video. The only solution I can find is to re-encode via Handbrake.
I am a complete newby to this stuff. I’ve played with tsmuxer and muktiavchd.

I wondered if

A. Anyone has had much luck?

B. If I reencode, Any ideas about the RF I should set? (I’ve heard RF of 0 - lossless - can actually make it worse quality wise)
And I can get them videos to work with a level of 4.0 - should I be using 4.1?

Obviously you aren’t too busy right now restructuring the whole ST, but if you ever get around to this, I have kk260’s ROTJ V2.6 (I think) if you get around to it. Also, Disney 4k ROTJ Blu Ray might be out by the time you get around to this. Right now kk260 is close but this would be the ideal version for me, subscribed.

Is there a link for this? (I have A kk650 semi-specialized edition - is this what you were referring to?). Not sure which version.
