Why are people like this?
Time

You can support the artist and still say its a BS position to not release the original cuts of his movies. I include American Graffiti and THX 1138 in this not just the Star Wars trilogy. Lucas is really his own worst enemy. Why not just release the movies the same way they looked and their original audio as catalog titles for Lucasfilm, Or at least allow Disney to do so. George might not like how grainy they look in a new 4K scan, but i would be phenomenally grateful to own the original Techniscope photography of THX and Graffiti. the DNR versions are trash. The cgi is garbage.

What changes would you make to the Sequels?
Time

The thing is Force Awakens and Last Jedi are far from perfect but the third film should have been where they should have stuck the landing. Instead they made a film worse than Return of the Jedi. I like Rey more as the adopted niece and a nobody than a Palpatine. Finn isn’t the only character they failed they also just about erased Rose. I mean i get it its Rey’s story and Finn and Rose are supporting roles, but they got even worse than Han and Leia did in ROTJ.

The third one introduced new characters i very much liked like Zorri Bliss, and Jannah. But in adding more characters it was overstuffed no room for Rose Tico?

Last movie seen
Time

I really enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons with Chris Pine. A fun movie and doesn’t try to be anything more than it is.

I also watched Shazam Fury of the Gods, loved the first one. This was terrible. Bad cgi, lackluster villains. Poor performances. Even the Wonder Woman scene which was fun didn’t save it. It reminded me of those Percy Jackson movies and Jessica Alba Fantastic 4 movies except worse. The best i thing i can say is it wasn’t offensive at all and is a decent family movie, but it is also one of the worst DC Superhero movies ever made.

Are you glad Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney or do you wish he hadn’t?
Time

I’m glad he sold in a way and also upset they won’t continue Legends as a separate timeline.

I’m not going to pretend i wouldn’t have watched Lucas sequels had they been made. I’m also not going to pretend the idea of Darth Maul as the big bad wasn’t a stupid idea, and bringing in Darth Taalon from the EU. Lazy and hamfisted.

Leia leading the New Republic sounds awesome. Han being a leader in the rebellion sounds great, Luke training new Jedi cool. Just not the training younglings thing. And the worst aspect Whills and Midichlorians, why?

What do you think of the <strong>Sequel Trilogy</strong>? - a general discussion thread
Time

Luke has a story in between 6 and 7. Lucasfilm for some reason just hasn’t told it beyond a couple cameos, a comic book and a novel. The sequel trilogy isn’t at fault for that though nor is Rian Johnson. The sequel trilogy is Rey’s trilogy not about Luke. Its not about Anakin either. It really didn’t even need to have the OT actors at all and could even have been set in the far future. Because they do very little at all they were window dressing. They are touchstones of memory. Remember Luke, Remember Han, Remember Leia. Fan service for Gen X fans. Even down to largely following the same style and story beats of the originals. Rebels Vs Empire. Jedi Vs Sith.

The actual world building is shallow and poor. Bordering on imitation. We know nothing about the state of the New Republic, or how the resistance became to be. We no nothing of the origins of the first order or the state of the Empire. And we never see the Return of the Jedi. I hate to say it but the prequel did a better job at world building than actual flavor of the story or likeable characters which the sequel did better. And the OT did better than both. But it was a smaller story and more contained.

I will say going back to the adventure style of the OT was enjoyable actually and i initially really enjoyed Force Awakens because it brought that style of good Star Wars back. It only took me awhile to realize well of course i liked it i love the 1977 film. I understand what George Lucas meant when he said Disney made a fan movie, that did nothing new.

I will always like Rey, Poe, Finn and Rose and i wish the movies were better.

The amazing thing is i bet your Bring it On trailer is better than the actual film on blu-ray which is quite lackluster.

What's the most heated Star Wars argument you've gotten into?
Time

Over the Last Jedi. I defended it as a good movie. Not sure i was right. I desperately wanted it to be. It still has elements of a good movie in it even with all its mixed parts good and bad.

I’m not going to take back what i said about Mark Hamill’s performance i think it was great and i still do.

The Abrams movies i really have to be in a sort of mood to watch, they are bad fanfiction. But can be fun if you turn your mind off.

My brother and i never really don’t like the same things in regards to SW. He hated the EU wouldn’t even give Heir to the Empire 5 minutes of his time because it wasn’t real Star Wars. He likes the Disney TV stuff, beyond the animated stuff i don’t. I like the SW comics he won’t bother with them or the novels or games because they aren’t real SW.

He likes the prequels i despise them, except for a soft spot for Phantom Menace. He says Episode III is the best one. He doesn’t mind Han shooting second or Hayden in ROTJ i do.

My brother in law also loves Disney SW and hated the prequel, and he liked the Last Jedi and honestly thought people were crazy over hating that movie. His own son hated it so much.

It seems like nobody involved in the making of the Original Trilogy has spoken up about George Lucas’ oppression of the unaltered theatrical version of the OT.
Time

The strangest thing is George Lucas promised Kershner final cut on Empire. The Special Edition is going back on his word and changing a film he didn’t direct. Worse on Return of the Jedi Richard Marquand was dead and couldn’t be consulted or asked. Only on the first film did he have a right as the director to change the movie. Still should have preserved the original for posterity.

The Weeb topic
Time

Don’t consider myself a Weeb. But i like Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex season 1 and 2, and Cowboy Bebop and Outlaw Star. I liked Soul Eater quite a bit, and Samurai Champloo but the ending was kind of meh.

I really liked the first season of Fireforce and the second season less so. But its not Soul Eater good. And the amount of fan service can distract from the overall story.

Liked the First season of Demon Slayer as well.

One Punch man was good for a few laughs.

'Rey Skywalker' (Upcoming live action motion picture) - general discussion thread
Time

If i watch it i’ll probably go in with an open mind and no preconceived notions. To be honest i have seen 8 of the 9 saga films in the theater and haven’t loved any of them since 1983. If i don’t bring in the baggage of 40 years of fandom maybe it will be an enjoyable 2 hours.

Going to do the same for Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny, but that will be tough it is hard to say goodbye to a favorite character and franchise. Star Wars ended twice for me. Once in 83 and again in 2017. I had the EU for some years but i only sort of have nostalgia for things in the 1990s up to the sale to Disney. Went to episode 9 to say goodbye to Luke and to celebrate the memories. That ticket was a gift i didn’t pay for it, probably wouldn’t have gone if it wasn’t.

I just don’t have an attachment to Disney Star Wars to quote Lucas its not my Star Wars. It is great it exists for the young and young at heart who haven’t turned in their fan card.

A '<strong>Rumour and News</strong>' thread for reported new Star Wars films and tv series
Time

I hated the new Indiana Jones V trailer. I’m a big fan of James Mangold, but if that flops will his Star Wars film happen at all. Hey maybe it will be his first real misstep as a director. Doesn’t mean Dawn of the Jedi has to suck though.

i’m only on board with Rey Skywalker’s movie if John Boyega returns as Finn as a Jedi Knight.

Filoni not sure on, his live action has been downright poor to mixed. His animated stuff has been phenomenally successful except for that one show Resistance.

The Unpopular Film, TV, Music, Art, Books, Comics, Games, &amp; Technology Opinion Thread (for all you contrarians!)
Time

Sick of all the piling on and hate for Last Jedi. Does that make it a good movie in my opinion no. Its worse than the prequel hate at this point. I’m just as guilty for hating how Luke was written, but its a far better movie than Force Awakens, and Rise of Skywalker. Luke has story purpose and is a character no matter how he is written he isn’t the worthless maguffin Michael Arndt and JJ made him.

Making a sequel 35 years later to Return of the Jedi probably shouldn’t have been done. If it had to be made doing it as a one off is a terrible idea. Hiring a guy who hates sequels and the very idea of them, and only likes making original films not franchises also probably was a bad idea. The only place i’ll defend Rian is his film wasn’t by corporate committee, he didn’t make it to fan demand. He is an auteur like George Lucas. Unlike Abrams who tried to copy Lucas or Spielberg, and always had the fans in mind. Though never pleasing them, or earning their praise except when he remade A New Hope.
