Thing about Disney is they released S-tier restorations of Snow White and Cinderella but there’s no documentary or really any proof at all except the work on screen. So they are not known for tooting their own horn. But after decades of Special Edition glazing (as the kids say) can anyone undo the perception that less isn’t more?
As far as Criterion goes while they are known for good bonus features, apparently it’s hit or miss with encoding? But I can’t imagine Disney or Lucasfilm farming out a release of this caliber, especially when it comes to creative control.
Some really attractive box art would be nice but since it hasn’t been a thing for decades I won’t hold my breath. Just remember the GOUT bonus discs with the photoshopped art replicating vintage posters! That’s a crime against humanity, errr I mean good taste.
Just traditional bonus features in high quality would be good. Particularly things that had film masters but were usually video sources like the Making of Star Wars or the ROTJ docs. We’ve seen a few deleted shots from the leaks looking better than ever, so let’s just go with hoping those scenes are all on disc. [I don’t want to bother Bobson Dugnutt but] I’d love an updated Darklighter Cut once these discs are out.
Is it too much to hope for HQ Holiday Special? Would it go with SW or ESB?

I personally am super excited for this new [old] version and thankful that we get to see a bit beforehand, behind the scenes. Too bad Star Wars Insider just cancelled because if there was a feature article about the restoration, I would get two copies.
The local hipster video store had this around 2005, even with a homemade ad for the store at the start of the tape. It was cool. All through the 90s I heard how bad the special was, but it’s kind of innocuous and “is what it is.” Bea Arthur’s cantina song is pretty good actually.
any chance you still have this tape? doing a preservation project trying to save every version of it i can (even the odd custom versions and 8th gen VHS tapes if they present a different broadcast channel than what’s out there)

I never saw much of the Clone Wars show but it was curious the writers decided to have Anakin and Tarkin together. This makes their scenes in episode iv significantly ‘juicier.’ (I can’t think of a better term.)

I’d say they definitely do, unless it’s some kind of fantasy light that doesn’t emit any heat. Baseball bat mode is just self-censorship or vfx budgetary issue.
There is always a way to explain what appears on screen, even if it’s a stupid explanation. So lightsabers are made of light rays that not only have a finite distance but also only enact their physical properties once they are impeded by significant mass. Baseball Bat Mode was perhaps a special setting Luke chose the morning before he stuck the handle into his trusty droid. Truly a creative choice for George or Luke (or the MPAA) and I’m going by what’s on screen. Awaiting the fanedit where all the thugs get SLICED!

I don’t think they are ever hot in the OT. Plus wouldn’t the hilt get too much to handle after a while, if they were?
Of course in the Phantom Menace we see lightsabers melt through a set of strong looking metal doors in the first five minutes of the movie. Compare to Luke cutting the hatch on an AT-AT, which should theoretically be sealed better than “a space door.” *

Remarkably, in Return of the Jedi, we see Luke’s saber acting like a baseball bat against Jabba’s thugs. Not sure if it’s hot or not.

I haven’t seen this movie except on DVD and blu. The bluray mix is indeed a bit gimmicky with voices moving across channels. Does the stereo mix have a lot of oomph? I remember being quite impressed by the sound mix of other Touchstone films at this time (Rocketeer and Sister Act.)

I assume you’re asking this because he did Fett in the rotj radio drama right? Well Boba has no lines in Jedi, and a different actor does him in ESB.
I really like the part with him tormenting Han in Jabba’s dungeon, I wish there was something like that in the movie.
Besides the big additions to Star Wars (Jabba in Mos Eisley and Biggs on Yavin) is there a breakdown or compilation of previously unseen shots in the SE OT? I believe there are some of Jabba’s dancers and the victory celebration in ROTJ but I’m not entirely sure.
Not talking about newly filmed shots like extended stormtroopers in desert, or Wampa cave.
Darth being a real guy + Anakin stealing his identity would be a great twist. That or the other scenario (Anakin dead but Vader is the real dad with Mrs Skywalker) would make revelations in Rotj much more exciting and the prequels a LOT more surprising. And Old Ben wouldn’t have to be a damn lying liar.
Your post is full of preposterous demands for people to do work for you. It goes past naivety into rudeness. If you want to see a project like this come to fruition, “we might” need to make clean DVD rips and research upscaling methods, and proceed from there. No one is going to burden themselves with a project like this just because you commanded them to.
I wonder if at any point developing Rotj, George considered making Luke into “Luke Vader” and keeping Anakin a separate character than Darth.
When I was a kid I thought Han said “Even I get bored at sometimes.” All the insinuations in that scene totally went over my head back then.

Is there any book, documentary or (unlikely) Dvd feature that shows how the lightsabers were animated and composited in the oot? I’m really curious what scale they were drawn, how it was photographed, colored, philosophy of motion blur, etc.
My son and I were having a conversation about Star Wars, and I said how the prequel Jedi should have had cool black suits like Luke in Rotj.
“Those prequels just made them all dress like Ben Kenobi, it’s silly.”
Then he pointed out how Anakin’s ghost was dressed like that since 1983…
