Are lightsabers hot?
Time

Mocata said:

I’d say they definitely do, unless it’s some kind of fantasy light that doesn’t emit any heat. Baseball bat mode is just self-censorship or vfx budgetary issue.

There is always a way to explain what appears on screen, even if it’s a stupid explanation. So lightsabers are made of light rays that not only have a finite distance but also only enact their physical properties once they are impeded by significant mass. Baseball Bat Mode was perhaps a special setting Luke chose the morning before he stuck the handle into his trusty droid. Truly a creative choice for George or Luke (or the MPAA) and I’m going by what’s on screen. Awaiting the fanedit where all the thugs get SLICED!

I don’t think they are ever hot in the OT. Plus wouldn’t the hilt get too much to handle after a while, if they were?

Of course in the Phantom Menace we see lightsabers melt through a set of strong looking metal doors in the first five minutes of the movie. Compare to Luke cutting the hatch on an AT-AT, which should theoretically be sealed better than “a space door.” *

The heat has also been used to explain why lightsaber wounds aren’t horribly bloody… (Someone please tell Ponda Baba)

Remarkably, in Return of the Jedi, we see Luke’s saber acting like a baseball bat against Jabba’s thugs. Not sure if it’s hot or not.

This is not a paid ad for hotornot.com which I remember used to be a fun site around the same time Phantom Menace was released.

*Ok I guess it’s not just a space door; the room must be sealed if the Jedi are to be poisoned, but who has poison cannisters in their AC system? A system that services only one room and not the whole ship?? Do Nemoidians have a special room to murder all their guests this way? Maybe it IS just a space door. Ok ok in real life it would be a bulkhead that could seal a hull breach. Still doesn’t explain ventilation. I think it’s a space door.

The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) Original Theatrical Reconstruction (In progress)
Time

I haven’t seen this movie except on DVD and blu. The bluray mix is indeed a bit gimmicky with voices moving across channels. Does the stereo mix have a lot of oomph? I remember being quite impressed by the sound mix of other Touchstone films at this time (Rocketeer and Sister Act.)

Also can you say why the commentary is in 3 channel?

unseen original shots in the SE
Time

Besides the big additions to Star Wars (Jabba in Mos Eisley and Biggs on Yavin) is there a breakdown or compilation of previously unseen shots in the SE OT? I believe there are some of Jabba’s dancers and the victory celebration in ROTJ but I’m not entirely sure.

Not talking about newly filmed shots like extended stormtroopers in desert, or Wampa cave.

George was telling the truth about the Father Vader twist going back to ANH, but so was Kurtz:
Time

Darth being a real guy + Anakin stealing his identity would be a great twist. That or the other scenario (Anakin dead but Vader is the real dad with Mrs Skywalker) would make revelations in Rotj much more exciting and the prequels a LOT more surprising. And Old Ben wouldn’t have to be a damn lying liar.

Help: Uncut Version of Dateline: Disneyland (1955), Disneyland After Dark (1962), and Disneyland 10th Anniversary (1965)

Your post is full of preposterous demands for people to do work for you. It goes past naivety into rudeness. If you want to see a project like this come to fruition, “we might” need to make clean DVD rips and research upscaling methods, and proceed from there. No one is going to burden themselves with a project like this just because you commanded them to.

“Empire” used YCMs as well, but accompanied by a substantially enhanced optical printer with, if I’m interpreting the article correctly, a new lens that finished the composite directly to 4-perf anamorphic rather than on VistaVision where it would then need to be reduction-printed.

Info comes from https://www.theasc.com/magazine/starwars

Looked at another article (Episode IV "Miniature and Mechanical Special Effects, Page 4) and realized I indeed misinterpreted this part of the “Empire” article-- the original’s opticals were also directly squeezed to 4-perf anamorphic during the composite, which is worded by its writer (John Dykstra) as making them “one dupe generation from the original photography”.

In summary the print chain could be described Negative-YCM-OCN.

Is this why Star Wars effects were deemed so crummy they were replaced by CGI? I.e. in ESB and Rotj were the effects composited in 65mm then copied to 35mm which is probably better?

The Black Hole (1hr 20min Cut)
Time

Ok I just watched this and it had less fluff than I remember. Mostly just really tense drama. I liked it.

I watched with subtitles and I must report there was a decent amount of errors & omissions. “Move this glass” should be “smooth as glass,” “are there worlds” should be “other worlds,” etc. once or twice where words hang on the screen for a minute and we lose captions for other lines. Signium should probably be Cygnium.

This edit would be a good basis for somebody to do further revisions, such as:

  • eliminating much of the meteor storm and making the damage to the Cygnus entirely caused by the destruction of the Palomino

  • replacing the terrible “heroic” music during the hospital rescue since the rest of the score is wonderful

  • toning down any gunplay to the minimum required for continuity

  • add blood to Tony Perkins death if it won’t look fake

I do not understand the conflict between Maximilian and Dr Reinhart, or why they combined at the end, but it certainly is weird.

New Republic Omnibus vol 2 (Thrawn Trilogy comics + Dark Empire series + Boba Fett)
Time

Anybody have this book? I pulled the trigger and it arrives next week. I don’t have any other Marvel omnibuses, and this one is 1300 pages, wondering how it may hold up? (Or weigh down??)

I never read the Thrawn novels but decided this would be a good way to get the gist of the story since I’m a comic guy. And I never had a problem with Dark Empire like some people. Pleased to hear it contains the 90s Boba Fett one shots as well. I would personally like a slim volume of just the Jabba comics too; no idea what book those are in.

Any thoughts on the Thrawn adaptation?

Perhaps Vader recognizes Han as the one who sent him flying in ANH?

This is made explicit in the radio adaptation, and makes you wonder why similar dialogue wasn’t implemented in the movie. You kind of forget that Vader would probably be holding an enormous grudge against Captain Solo.

Where are the unused scenes to find?
They are all on DVD and Bluray?
Or exists some only on TV production,Internet and Laserdisk?
Is there a list of unused scenes they released?
Thanks

I’ve read this whole thread and still would like a concise summary of what scenes are are in the extended cut, what are additional on home video ‘deleted scenes,’ and what are provided elsewhere like the scene Max Evry made available. (The lady actually talked about her tape in his book so I’m really happy it’s out there.)

I was under the impression that everything on archive was in the public domain.

Maybe they took it off of archive because it was TN1’s scan.

Maybe it was taken down from archive by the actual copyright holder, Universal Pictures??
