Episode VII: The Force Awakens - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD *
Time

Was kind of bummed to read this but I suppose I knew it would happen. Apparently Lawrence Kasdan is moving on after he finishes up with the Han Solo SW Anthology film (due in 2018). So he will have co-written TFA and the Han Solo movie and bow out. I hope Rian Johnson is really as good as they say to write the middle film. For that matter, Colin Trevorrow with the final film in the ST.

Another thing this convinces me of is that Han Solo will absolutely die in TFA. Kasdan has written some of Harrison Ford’s most iconic moments in the cinema and him bowing out after TFA and the Solo Anthology film solidifies, for me, that Captain Solo is not long for this galaxy.

Was listening to the Far, Far, Away Podcast this morning and Simon is taking a hit for his comments about the Prequels but the man speaks the truth.

I mean, I accept the Prequels on their own terms. They exist, I don’t want them written out of history. But they are not good movies. TPM was maybe one of the worst movie-going experiences I have ever had in my nearly 40 years. I wonder if this is maybe a generational thing. Gen X loved the OT because it spoke to them and Millennials (not all of them, but a lot) are more apt to like the PT.

What I cannot abide by is the fact that the OT that we are forced to live with in the public domain now is not recognizable to what I grew up with. If I can be forgiving to the PT and say “let 'em live” then we should at least have the OT available to us as they were originally released and not retroactively changed to fit the PT (or other whims). Even if it makes for an uneven viewing experience, that’s fine. They don’t all have to fit together and make sense. They can exist together in the same family without all having to agree with each other as long as they agree with each other among themselves, PT, OT and now ST, respectively.

I just saw on the BBC that the Star Wars fan who had little time to live and was able to see a cut of the film has just passed away.

Makes me happy JJ was able to grant his wish.

Just heard this as well and I’m really sorry to hear about his passing, especially so soon. I hadn’t heard if he and his wife had children or not. Being a young widow won’t be easy either way. His passing was very quick since the story last week that he had seen it.

I’m glad they worked it out so he could see TFA early.

There’s a new interview with J.J. in Wired: http://www.wired.com/2015/11/star-wars-force-awakens-jj-abrams-interview/

That’s a MUST READ interview. Very well done and informative about the process of making the film.

And the more I think about it, I have zero clue as to what is going to happen in TFA. I have suspicions, as we all do of course. However, this is a single movie; there will be three total for this part of the ‘the saga’. I’m trying to use that to help be a barometer as to what will actually be resolved or revealed by the end of TFA.

It’s very possible we won’t know a ton more than we already do right now about identities and motives of certain characters and relationships. There will be some plot resolutions, of course, but this will be “Macro Level” Star Wars. Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow will have to do the “Micro Level” work.

Star Wars theatrical versions not coming in 2015
Time

My first post here. Forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere.

I was fortunate to get tickets for the Star Wars Marathon at a theater in my city. While looking around tonight for some details I noted that the listing on the Seattle Cinema site explicitly mentions the following:

1:00 AM | Episode I: The Phantom Menace*

4:00 AM | Episode II: Attack of the Clones*

7:00 AM | Episode III: Revenge of the Sith*

*30-45 minute break between movies; 2D theatrical releases

(1 hour 15 minute intermission)

10:45 AM | Episode IV: A New Hope**

1:30 PM | Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back**

4:15 PM | Episode VI: Return of the Jedi**

**30-40 minute break between movies; 2D “original” theatrical releases (emphasis mine)

1 hour 30 minute intermission

8:00 PM | Episode VII: The Force Awakens***

***3D and Dolby Atmos

I'll be attending in my city (in Ohio) at an AMC theater. My question or stream of consciousness thought is...surely this Marathon is a uniform thing...right? The AMC site doesn't explicitly say which versions will or won't be shown.
