The video essay is too simplistic.

Agreed with much in your post. I do think the extensive CGI is the issue being complained about when people talk about too much cleanliness. It's more an abundance of fake stuff that looked fake. And Padme's ship was silly! Didn't have the iconic status they must have intended.

The big problem with the "too much CG" is Lucas did too much, too early. He made most of the sets, stunts, creatures, etc CG in 1999, 2002, 2005, way too early for that amount of CG to look good. Avatar was the first one to have primarily CG sets that looked real. The PT now looks embarrassingly bad in many spots and it's not even that old.

The ST won't have such a problem with CG sets, they'll look more convincing, and JJ Abrahms uses a lot of physical sets anyway.

I've always felt it was possible to save this one shot where we see Vader's shuttle leaving Bespin. It doesn't throw the music off, and you get the visual confirmation that he's made it back to the Executor. IMO, the best of both worlds

Vader's shuttle

I have to disagree.

Movies are supposed to be about show, not tell. The work has already been done.

It's a quick snippet.

It gets the info across.

It doesn't affect the film is any negative way like keeping the whole scene would.

Personally, I can't see any downside in keeping it.

I can't disagree more about this. The info doesn't need to be added by seeing the shuttle go to the Executor. And it certainly does affect the film in a negative way.  The whole scene flowed beautifully along with the great score by John Williams in the pre SE version. Now these abominations of adding worthless scenes were added and that flow is gone and the score is hacked up. And keeping even one shot would still screw the sequence up in both the flow and the musical score.  Why GL felt that we had to see Vader travel to the Executor is beyond me. Everything that we needed to know was originally there in one line "Bring my shuttle". So what was Vader going to do with the shuttle if not head back to his ship? Was he going to go on a sight seeing tour? No. This added scene was just another unnecessary Ric Olie moment.

Every single added scene from the SE's during the escape from Bespin is gone, as it should be.

And Needa's shuttle was changed to a Lambda class shuttle so there is still a shuttle in the movie

I thought you still had the crowd shots from when Lando is ordering the evacuation?

I always loved the way the original Clone Wars presented him as an absolute badass Jedi killing machine, more of a monster or weapon than the chatty moustache-twirling villain he is in EpIII

You have to conciously work to mess something like this up. It's all there, yet we still got a silly cartoony (more cartoony than the actual cartoon one!) version of Grievous instead.

On that "DS looks way too small" issue, I think what everyone's said for a long while, about having the reveal of the new DS dwarfing the Executor, is ideal.

Also, maybe try to minimize the number of shots in the film that actually feature the DS and the Moon both, since those are the ones that make the DS looks small. Instead keep the DS as the focus, dwarfing everything else, instead.

From that scale picture, it seems like the Executor crashing will no almost nothing to the DS, so I don't know, maybe you'll have to make the ship going down more meaningful than it actually crashing. Like those suggestions about Piett deliberately crashing the ship in a kamikaze attack (however futile).

In general, actually, you don't get a sense of hopelessness from the DS in this one. It's even bigger, it's shielded, and it hasn't got an easy thermal exhaust port to destroy it. It ought to be invincible and unstoppable, like nothing they can do even scratches it, not even a SUper Star Destroyer crashing into it. As it is right now, as soon as the shield is down, it's easily blown up by a couple of tiny ships. So much for unstoppable. It robs the film of its potential impact. You should be on the edge of your seat, wondering how they're going to survive against this invincible DS, not waiting for them to destroy it.

I like the idea of the Executor doing only small damage, but exposing a way into the core for the Falcon, only exposing a weakness at the last minute, not part of the plan from the start.  Instead maybe the plan could have been to literally just blast the crap out of the station while its unfinished, not operational and undefended, to make it unusable before its operational (with the consequence of it becoming operational meaning the end of the Rebellion, no question). Hence the entire fleet coming. It raises the stakes and feels like the big finale.

One thing that is possibly impossible to fix (at least I can't think of a way other than building a new carbonite block and filming it) is Han's shirt change from going into the chamber and coming out frozen (it's an error that wasn't fixed in ROTJ either).

I'm actually working on a way of fixing that :)

How many arms do you have exactly?

If you're working with the 5.1 mix, the vocals are mainly in the center channel, but (IIRC) there is usually a bit of leakage to the left and right channels.

One exception to this (at least) are Temuera Morrison's inserted lines in ESB - they are solely in the center channel, unlike Vader's lines in the same scenes.

DE

So would that mean that his lines would be easy to remove and replace with the original voice?

I just don't want to see the theatrical cut Avatar disappear when these new cuts are released. The original cut must always remain an option.  It all goes back to that quote Cameron said about Lucas... As long as Cameron doesn't disown the theatrical cut of Avatar he has a right to be critical of George's creative decisions..

There's no chance of that happening. Cameron has stated that the theatrical cut is the director's cut, it's his cut of the film. Any extended version, he's said will be "fan cuts", in that they're being extended purely so the fans can see more of the film.

Plus, he's done multiple versions of films before, and the original has never disappeared.

There we go: Anakin with PT-style robes. I gotta say, it really does enhance the shot even further.

I have to agree with Vaderios and company: Anakin is not going to look like Hayden for the simple reason that Vader died as an old(er) man, not as a young Hayden.  Look at Yoda and Ben; they are not their younger selves, but as they were when they died - you know, Ben looks as he did when Vader/Anakin kinda killed him.

So why isn't Ben giving Anakin a big punch in the face ("And now we can rest in peace... which reminds me.. POW!  That's for what you did to me on the Death Star, you bastard)?

Well old Ben did dismember Anakin and leave him to burn to death, I think he had a right to be pissed.

AVATAR and 3D in general....
Time

ferris209, you do realise that exact same treatment could be given to Star Wars?

No one is interested in originality before this, they never use the word "deriative", after all, they're on a a Star Wars site, everyone knows Star Wars is far from original, it's the execution that makes it great (OT that is).

Yet Avatar is here, and suddenly "it's bad because the story is not new"? What has quality got to do with originality? What the story is isn't important, it's the storytelling ("a movie is not what it is about, but how it is about it"). I found Avatar's story simple, well told and resonating. It's been done before, but who cares? That doesn't make it bad.

The rest of the film's areas, to me, were fantastic. The visuals were flawless (every Cameron and WETA did with the CG in this film is what Lucas wanted to do with the Pt and failed), the 3D was great, the acting was superb, the music was good, and as per usual in a Cameron film, the script was slightly cheesy but very memorable.

One of the best blockbusters I've seen in many years, easily, and definitely lived up to the hype.

I'll just assume Palpatine demoted Vader to his secretary after he let the DS get blown up, and there's a dress code that goes with the job.

I still don't get what you are saying, it's more of an "anything the prequels did is bad, anything the OT did was good" mentality, there was nothing wrong with Yoda's speech, it suits his character. Who are any of us to say how he should speak anyway?

Because there's no way he could speak like he does in the PT as a simple quirk, he would only be able to do that with an actual, concious effort. "Around the survivors, a perimeter create", or "that you are right, I hope".

That's ridicuous, and just more of the flanderization various characters got in the PT. Palpatine has a tendency to cackle in a sinister manner in ROTJ? Well now come ROTS he never stops laughing and cackling like an idiot. Yoda sometimes says his sentences in the wrong order? Well now in the PT every line is like that, even lines he couldn't possibly have done without purposely thinking about them first.

The Prequel Radical Redux Ideas Thread
Time

Not only does it make Tatooine even more prominent than it should be (random backwater planet, yet almost every film goes there), but it just makes it too much of a coincidence that Anakin and Padme just happened to have to go to the same planet Obi-Wan has tracked the Separatists to.

I mean, there's millions upon millions of planets in the galaxy, yet the saga keeps getting dragged to the same one, it makes the scope of the story seem compact, and tiny.

P.S. There's been a lot, for various fanedits, but I think a list of all the possible new names for the PT episodes would be helpful for future faneditors. I don't mind ROTS too much, but AOTC for sure just doesn't cut it, it's a terrible and inaccurate title, TPM I'm ambivalent towards.

I would say no to the merging of Geonosis and Tatooine, for the simple reason that i am sick to death of that damn planet. Out of the way yeah right. For a saga that takes palce over six movies, and an entire galaxy, we sure do see the same backwater planet a lot. Five movies feature Tatooine, that's ridiculous. I can understand Coruscant in the PT, it's the capital, but why the same desert planet over and over?

We need to more variety in the PT (I was shocked we actually went to Kashyak in ROTS, instead of back to the Forest Moon of Endor), so I say keep up those colour changing/correcting ideas people were having the Prequel Radical Redux thread for the likes of Geonosis.

But that's neither here nor there in this thread. On topic, would most people agree that not only must Jedi ROcks be gone and never heard of again, but that most of the creatures in Jabba's Palace need to go? I mean, blue elephants playing keyboards, that thing with lips on a stalk that sings the song? They just look ridiculous to me, and so far removed from the Cantina's brilliant array of creatures (on the same planet no less) that it's like we walked into a different movie.

That mock-up is probably a little too violent for SW, but I agree that some kind of slash mark on the mooks is essential, it just doesn't look like Luke's doing any damage as it is right now.

Uh, if that mock up is to violent for star wars, then they need to go back and take out the burn marks from ROTS

Those are just some slash marks, that guy is nearly being vertically bissected. It's a lot more violent.
