Hey, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. It’s probably good you haven’t been following the thread closely, since you can provide a fresher reaction

#2 is all thanks to DominicCobb, btw.

#4 is from poppasketti.

#5 has had some discussion, and the idea is that the dagger is the one whispering to her to nudge her in the right direction. It may not be clear enough to really be viable. I guess we are still indeterminate if it is truly viable to replace the Goonies moment.

I had watched your workprint 1, and it was nice already, even though there were less changes.
Again, I had some things to do in these days so I just read that you released your V2. To me there were no issues like rough cuts or else. The first act has a much better pacing.
I also noticed, but that’s personal, that jonh’s ghosts scene gave me a quite different feel while watching the whole movie. I mean, at first it was only a single scene, but now it really feels like something that should have been there from the stars. It also connects the three trilogies better than anything else (Ben from OT, Anakin from PT, Luke from ST).
I also liked the subtle DOF motive during the Death star duel.

Oh, and about the Dagger. I’ll have to rewatch the scene. At first I didn’t get your intention, but that’s probably because I was trying to notice every change (I’ve watched TROS countless times for that awful edit of mine, like I’m sure many of you have). To enhance your point you could maybe add some whispers as Rey is holding the Dagger in front of the Death Star? It could work with 3PO’s like “Only this blade tells”. Tells. Like, literally.

EDIT I think some parts of the Mustafar sequence could be used. The wide shot with TIEs looks ok to me. The volcanic eruptions look too real-world IMHO, while the shot of stormtroopers getting out of the transport too animated. But I like the landing (not the last frames when the camera inclinates).
That’s such a great work though. There are just very minor issues for me and I’d totally watch and enjoy any edit with those shots.

Totally loved it.

  1. Rey’s training scene works really well, and I loved the new force vision.
  2. I like how you re-purposed Kylo touching Vader’s mask. That, with his own vision, fits amazingly with the following mask reforging sequence. Now it looks more like a character evolution (at least with the material we have). In TLJ he tried to create something new with Rey. But she refused, so he is forced to go back. Plus, it’s always great when scenes from previous movies are added. It reduces the feeling of an un-cohesive trilogy. Wonderful.
  3. Nice removal of Finn’s “POEEEEEE!”
  4. I liked the restructured Force dialogue between Rey and Kylo. I haven’t followed the thread so much in these days, unfortunately. Where’s the Kylo line “You were eight” from?
  5. I only don’t get what you did with the Dagger. Rey doesn’t do that ridiculous “Oh, the Dagger has the same shape of the Death Star”, and that’s wonderful. But how does she realize where the Wayfinder is? I mean… it’s ok if she can just sense it, but aboard Kylo’s Destroyer you kept Rey saying that she needs to retreive the Dagger. It’s not a criticism or anything. Just trying to understand.
  6. I also like how you moved Palpy’s “Kill me and my spirit wil blablabla”. It was stupid for him to tell Rey, because that’s something that should be used to NOT convince someone to kill him. Plus,.the fact that when Rey and Palpy meet we already know that gives a whole new feel to the scene.
  7. Leia touching Han’s medal works really great. You hinted that she was responsible for Kylo’s vision of Han without having to show her disappear after that. Bravo!

It’s great by its own, but even better as a base for other edits 😉

Hey there!

I generally liked the edit a lot. ROTJ is much more pleasing to watch thanks to your visual enhancements. Pacing was on-point, trimming some unnecessary or childish scenes, like those with the Ewoks (for example, Leia meeting Wicket, for all of its charm, drags the middle act quite a bit, and its absence now makes the Ewoks seem a bit more menacing at the beginning).

I loved the color correction overall. The brighter Endor was superb and much more distinct from a generic redwood forest. I don’t have any issues with the duller throne room. I understand some people thinking the Tatooine Dune Sea sequence now looks way too pale, but honestly I like it that way, and it fits nicely with the Tatooine scenes from The Mandalorian so that’s a bonus. I kind of missed the SE sarlacc (personal preference) but it’s nothing compared to what your fan-edit gets right.

Music was mostly great, specially for the sequences that previously had none. The new music during the speeder chase was the highlight for me, very well done. The moment where Luke and Vader sense each other with the Force over Endor was also made much more chilling. There were only a couple of times the changes bugged me a little but it was more of it being mismatched themes (like Jyn Erso’s theme for Han and Lando’s farewell) than the score itself being unfitting. So the music gets my seal of approval too.

Nice job!

Thank you! 😉

Thank you.
I’ll just reply to some things, to explain the reasons behind these changes.

  1. To me the whole first act of the movie has some pacing issues. Vader’s arrival does not add anything at all to the story. That’s why I chose to remove it.
  2. Placing Palpatine’s arrival as the opening scene allows to establish the real threat.
  3. I removed the “It’s too late for me, son”. Usually people complain about Vader in ROTJ and how he looks and sounds way less menacing than in Empire. At this point, IMHO, he should still be that, the powerful inhuman machine. If he says to Luke that it’s too late for him, it sounds like he would like to be redeemed (something which I don’t like).
  4. I won’t argue about personal taste. Every time I rewatch it I like the Throne Room more and more. The red lighting and royal guards are visible, as are Luke’s face and the small orange light in Palpy’s chair. But I like that everything else is black. There is just space out of the windows. And space is not blue. But again, personal taste is out of discussion. Same with lightsabers and Palpatine’s eyes.
  5. About the Sarlacc pit sequence, I chose not to color correct almost anything from the Disney+ version. I just enhanced the blues and greens (for sky and lightsaber).
  6. About music… again, that’s totally fine. I added new tracks when there was none, and replaced a few which I didn’t like (Ewoks’ music as they start the attack, for example).

That was some fine criticism. Thank you 😉

I really don’t like the whole “Leia always knew”. She clearly didn’t, not even in TFA.
Again, they tried to mimic Return of the Jedi and the Ben-Luke dialogue. But back then Obi Wan and Yoda knew who Luke and Leia were because they were present during their birth, not because “the Force told them”.
How could Leia know that Rey is related to Palpatine? Luke can because he’s a Force ghost (maybe he has a greater understanding in this state), but personally I hated that scene and revelation that totally comes out of nowhere.
To me it’s better to have Luke just say “Because you’re a Palpatine” and then make him sit next to Rey.

Just watched it and very much enjoyed it ! Your opening logos were fantastic…very slick and professional looking and sounding .I love what you did with Endor , it really does feel like a more alien world now .The overall tone of this edit is much more serious and now I am on board with many of the music choices you used .I think it would have been cool to use a line from the novelization for one of Jabba’s subtitles , " I was killing your kind when being a Jedi meant something " . Your edit gets his attitude of disdain for Jedi across, but I think the novel line would be much more of a direct way of doing it. Am I mistaken , or did you add in some foley effects like footsteps etc in some parts ? The opening scene feels much more ominous now and I like it a lot .The only thing that took me out of this a bit was the gray in the Emperor’s throne room . I think I see what you are going for…the tone does enhance the glow of the Emperor’s eyes and the colors of the lightsabers and the lightning…I just think you overdid it a bit . I don’t think you should change it back to the way it was originally shown, but maybe put a little bit of the blue tones back in . As it stands now, it reminds me a bit too much of Sin City and in pushing the gray tones , it makes all of the characters in the scene almost devoid of color .I liked the subtle enhancement of the Death Star explosion and the kind of " gaussian blur/dreamlike"color effects of certain scenes .I think it was a good choice to get rid of the dance number in Jabba’s palace …It helps with the tone you are going for .I also prefer the more reddish glows on the x-wings to the purple you used and would love to see Sebastian Shaw’s force ghost re-instated . Another cool thing would have been to clean up the editdroid laserdisc footage with Yoda with the line," Obi-Wan would have told you long ago, had I let him " and insert it into this edit .Your musical choices in this sequence did help make it feel new and exiting though .In fact , I thought the music you used in much of this edit helped give everything a greater sense of urgency .Sorry to ramble . just giving my overall thoughts and hopefully, constructive criticism .Overall, I really did enjoy this . Thank you for sharing .Out of curiosity, are you planning on doing further edits to this ?

So… first of all thank you so so much 😄

  1. That line from Jabba would have been cool indeed. Unfortunately I haven’t read the novelization, so I didn’t know about it 😦
  2. I know that many people don’t like (or at least not entirely) the tone in the Throne room. Personally I enjoy it more than the original, mostly because that’s just a tower in space, and space isn’t blue. But I totally get your point. If I’ll revisit this again, I’ll probably reduce the black-and-white a little bit.
  3. I also get the X-Wing engines and Shaw’s force ghost. De gustibus non disputandum est. My intention was to give a feel of a more cohesive saga, giving the engines kinda the same color they had in Rogue One, and keeping Christensen as a way to connect the saga. But again, I totally get that many people don’t like it, so no problem 😉

About a V3, right now I have no plans about working on it. I want to revisit the prequels (I rewatched my edits of Ep I & II and they look awful). But I think sooner or later I’ll come back to this, for sure.
Thank you again 😃
