The Rise of Skywalker: Ascendant (Released)
Time

I really donā€™t like the whole ā€œLeia always knewā€. She clearly didnā€™t, not even in TFA.
Again, they tried to mimic Return of the Jedi and the Ben-Luke dialogue. But back then Obi Wan and Yoda knew who Luke and Leia were because they were present during their birth, not because ā€œthe Force told themā€.
How could Leia know that Rey is related to Palpatine? Luke can because heā€™s a Force ghost (maybe he has a greater understanding in this state), but personally I hated that scene and revelation that totally comes out of nowhere.
To me itā€™s better to have Luke just say ā€œBecause youā€™re a Palpatineā€ and then make him sit next to Rey.

Just watched it and very much enjoyed it ! Your opening logos were fantasticā€¦very slick and professional looking and sounding .I love what you did with Endor , it really does feel like a more alien world now .The overall tone of this edit is much more serious and now I am on board with many of the music choices you used .I think it would have been cool to use a line from the novelization for one of Jabbaā€™s subtitles , " I was killing your kind when being a Jedi meant something " . Your edit gets his attitude of disdain for Jedi across, but I think the novel line would be much more of a direct way of doing it. Am I mistaken , or did you add in some foley effects like footsteps etc in some parts ? The opening scene feels much more ominous now and I like it a lot .The only thing that took me out of this a bit was the gray in the Emperorā€™s throne room . I think I see what you are going forā€¦the tone does enhance the glow of the Emperorā€™s eyes and the colors of the lightsabers and the lightningā€¦I just think you overdid it a bit . I donā€™t think you should change it back to the way it was originally shown, but maybe put a little bit of the blue tones back in . As it stands now, it reminds me a bit too much of Sin City and in pushing the gray tones , it makes all of the characters in the scene almost devoid of color .I liked the subtle enhancement of the Death Star explosion and the kind of " gaussian blur/dreamlike"color effects of certain scenes .I think it was a good choice to get rid of the dance number in Jabbaā€™s palace ā€¦It helps with the tone you are going for .I also prefer the more reddish glows on the x-wings to the purple you used and would love to see Sebastian Shawā€™s force ghost re-instated . Another cool thing would have been to clean up the editdroid laserdisc footage with Yoda with the line," Obi-Wan would have told you long ago, had I let him " and insert it into this edit .Your musical choices in this sequence did help make it feel new and exiting though .In fact , I thought the music you used in much of this edit helped give everything a greater sense of urgency .Sorry to ramble . just giving my overall thoughts and hopefully, constructive criticism .Overall, I really did enjoy this . Thank you for sharing .Out of curiosity, are you planning on doing further edits to this ?

Soā€¦ first of all thank you so so much šŸ˜„

  1. That line from Jabba would have been cool indeed. Unfortunately I havenā€™t read the novelization, so I didnā€™t know about it šŸ˜¦
  2. I know that many people donā€™t like (or at least not entirely) the tone in the Throne room. Personally I enjoy it more than the original, mostly because thatā€™s just a tower in space, and space isnā€™t blue. But I totally get your point. If Iā€™ll revisit this again, Iā€™ll probably reduce the black-and-white a little bit.
  3. I also get the X-Wing engines and Shawā€™s force ghost. De gustibus non disputandum est. My intention was to give a feel of a more cohesive saga, giving the engines kinda the same color they had in Rogue One, and keeping Christensen as a way to connect the saga. But again, I totally get that many people donā€™t like it, so no problem šŸ˜‰

About a V3, right now I have no plans about working on it. I want to revisit the prequels (I rewatched my edits of Ep I & II and they look awful). But I think sooner or later Iā€™ll come back to this, for sure.
Thank you again šŸ˜ƒ

Could you please tell me what you think of this?
Iā€™m still not sureā€¦ Iā€™m not eagerly fond of the music in Return, so Iā€™m trying to replace it here and here.
Iā€™d like to have an opinion.
I tried to remove the original music with Audacity, but it was hard to keep other noises and voices.

I prefer the original music , although this is an interesting experiment and provides a new experience . That is just me though . I am interested in seeing/hearing how you incorporate the ending of this scene with the one that comes afterward in the space battle though .

So, first of all thank you for the suggestion about the glow effect. Unfortunately I work with Sony Vegas, but Iā€™ve already changed and reduced the glow to make it more like PT and less like ST.
About the musicā€¦ the Falcon engine noise helps. I changed the music right there and added a track from Rogue One for the space battle sequence.

Grumpy Luke is giving a sense of logic as to why Luke would abandon the galaxy in shame (as the crawl and Han talked about).

Rose And Holdo were created because Finn and Poe didnā€™t have distinct or fleshed out personalities. They needed to be flawed and different to each other, and a plot showing their individual weaknesses needed to see them both fail, learn, and grow. This also is why the ā€œuselessā€ Canto Bight sequence was incorporated.

The Knights of Ren were absent because they were a one-line throwaway concept by Abrams, and Johnson didnā€™t want them to be useless fighters who were introduced and subsequently killed off. He created and used the Praetorian Guards instead. Abrams would later relegate the Knights of Ren to the same shallow goons, but with less impressive choreography.

Snoke was undeveloped and used only for Kyloā€™s motivation and growth, so Johnson continued along that path. Since Kylo was the primary antagonist of the trilogy, Johnson allowed him to take that role more directly while still giving him a character arc.

Johnson subverted expectations because the only film preceding was a retread of the plot of the original Star Wars, but with a bigger Death Star. The one thing Abrams changed from the original Star Warsā€™ formula was giving the film a cliffhanger ending. This cliffhanger got in the way of two of the three main Characters having an arc. Kyloā€™s choice to kill Han and commit to the Dark Side completes his arc and quest in the film. Rey is still searching for belonging, and Finn is knocked out before he can take any personal action in the plot. Poe wasnā€™t meant to be a protagonist, and originally was set to die in the TIE crash. Because of this, Poe had no arc. TLJ had to give all of these characters arcs to compensate, and retreading past films or giving the obvious answers to shallow questions wouldnā€™t achieve that.

Thus, every major issue people have with The Last Jedi can be traced to choices made with The Force Awakens.

Applause.
