How is mental illness treated in Star Wars canon?
Time

I was on Reddit discussing mental illness in Star Wars and someone pointed me to a source that I had long forgotten. The very first novel after the Great Purge; A New Dawn actually touched on mental illness, something I believe the Jedi either don’t believe in or largely ignore. E.g. Anakin Skywalker and Bariss Offee. Yet neuroscience is a very mature tech in Star Wars, so it is impossible they would not know about mental illness. Yet here is a quote from A New Dawn regarding Skelly, a dissident miner on the moon of Gorse:
"Skelly’s frozen image lingered there before her, his
mouth stuck open mid-rant. It seemed a perfect pose-
and she knew she’d see it again. Because Skelly, she
knew, was red-stamped. Records digitally stamped with
a red star indicated visits from Gorse’s mental health
authority.
“He gets any more stars, he can open up his own
galaxy,
" she said. She took a deep breath, relieved. Red-
stamped people tended to stay in the medical system,
rarely escalating to anything else. They were freer with
words than most, rarely intending action. And Skelly
had been fun to listen to in the past, at least. She un-
paused the feed.”

Basically, from what this is said, there do exist mental health facilities in Star Wars, but the level of concern is very low as they don’t feel Skelly is much of a threat to the Empire, but SPOILER ALERT he may be. When Skelly goes to this facility so many times that it is almost ridiculous, do they just give him therapy or meds or some other treatment we don’t have here on Earth?

Theoretical hyperspace physics?
Time

In the awesome Out of the Shadows canon High Republic YA, we are introduced to a character named Xylan Graf who studies theoretical hyperspace physics. His expertise is called on to try and understand the Nihil’s Path engines which allow them to jump in any location without fear of a gravity well. I am NOT smart enough to be a physics major but if I lived in the Star Wars galaxy; I would get a brain implant to augment my intelligence and be a theoretical hyperspace physicist. What kinds of topics and concepts would I be learning? What about hyperspace do you think is theoretical?

I understand your skepticism but remember. Star Wars is like our society only much more advanced. Astrophysicists always existed in Star Wars; we just never heard or saw them because they had nothing to do with the main story.

Why I love science in Star Wars is probably due to my mental illness.

Is the end of the Sequel Trilogy; at the pinnacle of Technodynamics?
Time

I’ve been wondering about science and scientific progression in the Star Wars universe. Even though people have pointed out that Star Wars is science fantasy and doesn’t care about science- that really isn’t true. Scientists are mentioned all the time in Star Wars. The society runs on science just like ours does. The stories were are shown are those of a religious order so science obviously takes a backseat but even the Jedi use technology. Lightsabers aren’t made out of wood! I just wonder what could be the next thing in science that scientists in Star Wars can pursue. They had FTL for millennia. You would logically think that whatever sci fi stuff you isn’t exist is fair game like teleportation and time travel BUT both those two things are something all people (sentient beings) have wanted since the beginning of time so the fact that they don’t exist must mean they tried and those things are impossible. Star Wars does have nanotech. It’s mentioned in several mediums so you would think that the logical next step would be pico and femtotechnology but the whole midichlorian thing makes me think it’s impossible. I also don’t really believe you can go smaller in the real world either. Matter replication and simulated reality seem to be good bets and I bet both exist BUT I bet the former exists and they won’t let it hit market because it would destabilize the economy and lead to a post-scarcity society like Star Trek. The latter also probably exists but probably isn’t healthy; may only exist for rich people on rich planets or just isn’t spoken about. That being said: What could be worked on by scientists in Star Wars?

Which of these technologies (on this list) would be the HARDEST to create in Star Wars?
Time

This Wiki page I’ve been editing for months with stuff I’ve read on the internet. Based on existing science and tech already available in Star Wars, which of these would be challenging for a scientist in Star Wars to create? Try to explain why and you can pick multiple entries. Remember, Star Wars is more advanced then the movies often show.

What can a scientist in my Star Wars fan fic be working on?
Time

I want to make a roleplay where the canon New Republic is working on a top secret science project analogous to the First Order creating Starkiller Base. It can’t be something already depicted in Legends or Canon; so I don’t want it to be teleportation, mind uploading, time travel, matter replicators, anything to do with the Force (unless it isn’t blasphemous) or any other super-common sci-fi trope.

Does anybody have any good ideas?

Ok my scientist is studying sub-Hyperspace, the dimension in which quintessence can be turned into Phantom Energy and then travel to destroy star systems in real time. This is how Starkiller Base fires it’s weapon after draining a sun. (I’m sure Disney will explore it more in due time). However, in the mean time; I wonder what other things my scientist can study about it. Applications I’ve considered would be a sub-hyperdrive which would allow for instantaneous travel like Star Trek: Discovery’s Spore Drive. It also could be used for instant communications. Good stuff but too much of a gamechanger to tinker with. What else could my scientist be studying about sub-hyperspace?

If he is being called to study a (the?) super massive black hole (which normally would be the very big one at the center of any galaxy), then I’d imagine he is somewhat of an expert in astronomical anomalies, maybe black holes, wormholes and hyperspace in particular. Here are a few ideas:

Maybe he is with a research team trying to study the effects of living in hyperspace for prolonged periods of time (setting the groundwork for an eventual extragalactic expedition, possibly).

He could be partnered with some xenobiologists who are following a herd of purgils and trying to understand how they can detect safe hyperspace routes.

Maybe he is sitting on a research station near the Unknown Regions trying to either A) detect the gravitational signs of black holes to help chart those regions, or B) he is trying to find predictive patterns in wormholes that randomly appear and disappear in the Unknown Regions, which make that area of space so hard to travel in.

I know you said no tech, but maybe he could be part of a team trying to develop a ship or station that can produce a concentrated anti-gravity field. The purpose being that it could help temporarily negate mass shadows of large interstellar objects and allow for ships to make shortcuts along various hyperspace routes. It’s basically like a reverse Interdictor in its function. It could be extremely useful for the military, who might want to sneak ships around enemy lines. The ship he is working on could actually be a modified Interdictor cruiser that the Republic acquired from the old Empire. Maybe they are still trying to figure out the kinks, so it wouldn’t be a game changer because it still really isn’t stable or reliable yet.

I really like the prolonged living in hyperspace study. What would be a negative side effect of living in hyperspace and what could I call this syndrome? In Legends, they have something called Hyper-Rapture which is going insane by looking out at hyperspace too much but that’s just looking not prolonged travel.

Im trying to write an RPG profile about a scientist who is working on something in the era of the New Republic. He does not believe in the Force in the way he doesn’t think it controls fate. (He acknowledges, however, that their is an energy field that some sentients can manipulate) I just need something for him to be researching. It really isn’t that important to the story; it just has to sound cool and scientific. It can NOT be game-changing or something that can alter the story in a dramatic way Also it can’t have already been done in Legends or Canon. I want a fresh idea.

It cannot be

  • A time machine

-A teleporter

-A matter replicator

-A singularity Weapon

  • Any type of droid

-Anything to do with holograms

-A food synthesizer

  • Anything to do with the Force or Midi-chlorians

  • A shrink ray

-A freeze ray

-pico and femtotechnology

-A Dyson sphere or any type of megastructure.

-Liquid metal armor or a nano morph

-Any improvements on the hyperdrive

-Limb regeneration

-Hyperspace nullifier

-Holodeck

  • Knowledge Transfer (Instant learning like in the Matrix)

-Philosophers Stone

-Kinetic weapons

-Solar sail

-Anything to do with kyber crystals

-Gene editing

-Mech suit

-Exosuit

-Gender change

In canon, during the Empire, scientists were researching methods to control droids, lasers that can punch through deflector shields and ship scale disintigrators. These ideas are therefore taken.
My scientist is called upon by the New Republic to investigate why the supermassive black hole is more active than usual and sucking in things from a further range. I just need something for the scientist to be studying before he is called away. It has to sound fresh and cool.
I’m looking not for a gadget or piece of tech. I’ve decided everything technological that we can think of, can be done. Speeders with deflector shields? Sure. We haven’t seen them but they can easily be done. I’m looking for something that would still be an emerging field of science. Something a Type II/III civilization would do next. Any ideas?
