Jigsaw II: Endgame (Saw, 2004-10) - Maniac, Zagadka (2021)

The follow-up to “A History of Desperation”, this one does not dissapoint. Combining multiple different plotpoints from the 3rd and 4th films, as well as another film (which I won’t spoil), this tells a completely unique story from some of the highlights of the series. Incredibly well edited, with flashbacks being inserted continuously with great skill. A/V quality is great, and the pace is insanely high - it plays out like an hour and a half triller film rather than your typical horror. Despite the major narrative changes, “Endgame” remains faithful to the Saw template and themes, even more so than the writers of the later films do. The amount of vision and planning that has gone into making this is incredible, virtually every scene you see in this edit has been re-arranged and modified. I can’t imagine what the timeline looks like.

This is a must watch for fans of the series, and even if you’re not a horror fan it’s just a great edit which avoids the gore and torture porn of its source. The final sequence alone is worth giving this edit a watch. Another Maniac/Zagadka masterpiece.

I checked out the first few minutes of this today. I thought that the A Fistful of Dollars inclusion was masterfully done, I really liked it, and agree regarding its symbolic value. However, starting at 03:01 (daytime scene) the colour grade is giving me problems. Maybe it’s just me, it seems that the regrade is too bright, too strong on the eyes. if you were to tone done the regrade for a future release I’d definitely like to see what you’ve done with the film as your ideas sound interesting, in particular with regards to reducing the on-the-nose dialogue and exposition.

So I finally got around to my storage unit and found my discs of leonenut’s Legend fanedits. Watched both again and they loved them. After watching the US and Director’s cuts on my new Arrow Boxset, and all the extras, it’s been a couple of weeks of non-stop Legend goodness.

Nah totally different vibe and personally I think that film is really bad. It’s got a lot wrong with it. It’s perhaps worthy of an edit to try and improve it but it does not come close to the original. It’s one of those films where you wish you never bothered.

The Crow: The O’Barr Edit - Suicidal Wombat Productions (2007 ?)

“It’s not death if you refuse it”

An interesting edit which focuses The Crow on Eric’s assassinations, largely cutting out the subplots inovolving the kid and the cop and greatly simplifying the story, so that the film more closely follows the comics. Suicidal Wombat Productions also adds a bunch of text (I’m assuming from the comics), renders the whole thing in B&W - which adds to the noir feel of the film, and is also faithful to the comics - and breaks the edit into “books”. Only problem here really is Brandon Lee’s cringy line delivery. Still a fun watch if you enjoy the original, and only 45 minutes long. There’s also a rescored flashback sequence which is quite well executed.

Editing is fairly sloppy, in particular when transitioning between the books, but also throughout. It’s not so bad as to ruin the edit, still definitely worth a watch if you want a version more faithful to the comics and with less filler.

If anyone’s interested in this let me know, I’ve got no clue where I got it from but I’d be happy to upload.

Technical details: It’s an old edit so the video quality is fairly low, and the video is letterboxed and pillarboxed. 2.77 GB file size. 7.3 mb/s video bitrate (variable), 480p, 29.97 fps (CFR). 192 kb/s audio bitrate (variable), 2.0 audio.

Raising Cain: Re-Cut - Peet Gelderblom (2012)

This is the far superior cut of Raising Cain, so much so that it was released as the official Director’s Cut by Brian De Palma himself. Here’s a good video describing the changes made (with spoilers):

Glad to see this has basically replaced the original as it is much more in-line with De Palma’s Hitchcockian thrillers, whereas the theatrical linear order is far less interesting and effective.

Apocalypto: The Legend of Jaguar Paw - Sinbad (2018)

A/V: Great quality and a fairly small file size, audio was good. A/V cuts were seamless, expertly done. Subs were little quick sometimes but mostly fine, and there weren’t too many of them.

I liked the approach of cutting dialogue, in fact I would’ve gone even further.
I felt that some of the character development scenes from early on are missed, although i understand they had to go to keep dialogue minimal.
Did not really feel most of the cuts, honestly surprised that 24 minutes have been removed.
Overall, the higher pace and reduced dialogue builds on Mel Gibson’s frantic, nightmarish experience. Very enjoyable watch, especially if you want a quicker version of the film, and a very strong fanedit from Sinbad. Apocalypto is an incredible film in its own right, and although the plot is the same, I recommend having watched the original before going into this one.

In the Mouth of Event Horizon (In the Mouth of Madness; Event Horizon) - RollWave (2014)

Technical details: 2.9 GB, video bitrate 4000 kb/s, 1280x720 AVC, audio bitrate 448 kb/s, 5.1 channel AC-3, no subs.

I enjoyed the original, In the Mouth of Madness, which this edit is largely based upon, however I found Event Horizon to be a fairly weak film with but with great visuals and horror moments. Therefore, I was very intrigued by the idea behind this fanedit, which essentially replaces the dreams and “in-book scenes” from ItMoM with scenes from Event Horizon. The end result is remarkable. The chosen scenes flow suprisingly well within the narrative of ItMoM; the placement of these scenes was very well chosen. I won’t spoil anything here. The editing on display here is highly skillful, much more so than you get from most fanedits, as it is not simply a case of ItMoM playing for a while, then switching to Event Horizon, and then back - but rather, scenes and imagery from Event Horizon is actually edited into ItMoM so that the final product feels like a single unified work.

One very minor point, at 1hr 27, the cinema scene of Trent waking up is the original and not the Event Horizon replacement. But that only lasts for a moment.

Overall, I have been looking forward to watching this edit for a number of years, and can safely say the hype paid off. Thank you to That One Guy for sharing this, and thank you to RollWave for making such an impressive piece of work. It’s a shame he’s not around anymore as both this and The Boy Who Never Lived are very technically impressive, and I’d be fascinated to see what else he could make.

The Godfather Part II: Extended Edition HD - hal_over_9000 (2016)

Absolutely phenomenal. I have newfound respect for Part II, I think it’s surpassed the first one for me. There was one very brief audio glitch around the 3 hr mark. Other than that, brilliant editing here throughout, I’m honestly unsure of what was added because of how seamless it was. Despite the epic runtime and having already seen the original last year, I was never once bored. There’s a lot more depth to the story and characters now. Part II is an all time classic and it’s only improved upon by this extended edition.

Jigsaw: A History of Violence (Saw, 2004-17) - Maniac, Zagadka (2020)

This edit presents a cut of the backstory of John Kramer that spans multiple Saw films in the first half, with the second half being a trimmed down version of Saw (2004). I’d recommend watching Saw I-IV before this edit, as it does spoil some things. Overall, the edit is excellently done and is highly imaginative with its choice of scenes spanning half a dozen films. The focus is more on the psychological aspects of Saw and John Kramer’s philosophy rather than the gore. A critique I have of this edit is that the reveal of Saw (2004) is spoiled just before it happens, I would have placed the backstory relating to the reveal to just after Kramer gets up, not before.

A/V quality, editing: There is some audio crackling throughout. Otherwise, very well done, and in good quality.

This is worth watching for the reconstructed backstory, tight editing, and rescore. The first half of this edit in particular is excellent, a completely new narrative. Would like to see a sequel covering Saw II-III or later installments. Which, given the post credits scene, might come one day.

Leon: The Non Lolita FanEdit - Tykjen (2019)

Excellently removes pretty much all of the dodgy stuff from Léon: The Professional, and leaves a fast paced and enjoyable action film with (still) interesting characters and far less cringe and uncomfortable scenes. Gary Oldman takes up a larger percentage of the runtime now and that’s always a good thing. The only way I’ll be rewatching Leon from now on.

if you ever do The Dark Knight, I’m definitely interested.

I went through the edit today, and I liked quite a lot of things about it: altered plot points, such as Batman being darker in his actions, the voice modulation of Batman, the rescore, the audio distortions, and, to an extent, the new dark look of the film. Scarecrow & fear-toxin Batman are downright demonic.

However, I couldn’t watch the whole thing as, for me personally, the new grade puts a strain on my eyes. I think this could be toned down a bit, especially in the daytime scenes, but also the nighttime scenes, as the contrast/slight blurriness can be painful to look at. I also think that the edit could do with stripping down the film to barebones and keeping the pace high, so as to place the focus on the more modified scenes by removing some scenes and sideplots, e.g. the business side of Wayne enterprises. But that’s just my personal preference.

I still think this is great and really imaginative, and I’m impressed with what you’ve done here, I’d just tone down the visual filters a bit.

Yeah I suspected this was the case as the laughing is partially in audience as well.

The sample clip you shared looks great, really good job in removing the laugh track. The audio drop at 1:36 is a bit sudden, might wanna smooth that out. The additional bell ringing sound effect at 1:47 is very well done, and you’ve done a great job at adding additional sound effects (or removing the laugh track channel? I doubt that’s possible), must’ve been hard.
I thought opening with the Australian broadcast was a bit odd since it’s an American show. Only a minor gripe.

How’s this coming along? And what kind of plot are you aiming for.

After finishing the first 5 seasons, I watched parts of this edit, and I’ve gotta say DragoonClawNZ has done an excellent job at re-ordering this massive series, very impressive stuff. What I saw was seamlessly edited (audio & video). The parts where multiple events take place side-by-side were particularly impressive. I also have to give credit to Mike Maloney, who first made this edit in 2010.

The only thing I didn’t like was that the time travel parts were also linearised. I know some people would prefer that, so that everything is in strict chronological order, but I personally felt that they felt out of place, and that since the show established that the time travel parts were the “present” of the time travelling characters, I felt that those segments should’ve played out in the “present” timeline rather than past. But anyway, that’s just my personal view on that.

I would recommend this edit to someone who has already watched Lost, but not if you haven’t, as the time travelling parts will confuse you. This edit also offers the opportunity to watch Lost WITHOUT flashbacks if you so wish, as now entire episodes take place solely on the island (once you’ve gotten through the flashbacks episodes, which I skimmed). I think that when I eventually re-watch Lost, I’ll just watch the parts of this edit set from 2004 onwards. At least for the first 3 seasons, which had great island plotlines.
