This place isn't quite the same as the rest of the internet.

That thread doesn't prove anything.

You're trying to prove something subjective?  Good luck with that.

I'm not trying to prove anything.  I'm just curious as to why the perception of both films seems to have changed over the years, or as to why Empire's reputation has vastly grew.

That thread doesn't prove anything.  There are plenty of people out there who prefer SW to Empire, but overall Empire is held in higher regard.  However that wasn't always the case, which to me is baffling.  I don't think I can name another sequel that was once regarded as inferior to it's predecessor that's now widely considered superior to it's predecessor.

I want to point out that I think a small part in the why reason why Empire ranks higher than SW on every single movie site out there is due to more people seeing SW.

An example of what I mean is:

Let's say a guy watches the original Star Wars and hates it.  Maybe he rates it a 3/10.  Since he hated the original SW so much, he never bothers watching any of the sequels.  Star Wars rating is hurt by this low score, where as Empire's rating is left untouched because the man doesn't rate it because he never saw it since he hated the original so much.  I'm guilty of this sort of thing.  I hated transformers, so I never bothered with the sequels.

I also think the rankings of Empire and SW is a generational thing.  I think older people who saw Star Wars when it came out in 1977 have an attachment to it that they don't to the other films, which is understandable.  That said, a younger man who watches them on DVD doesn't have any attachment to one over the other, so he judges them on strictly the film's merits, and doesn't let nostaglia cloud his judgement.

Empire is obviously the film that's held in the highest regard among movie goers these days, and the evidence clearly lies in movie ranking lists done on several sites on the internet.

Some examples:

IMDb: Empire is ranked 11th all-time, Star Wars 17th all-time

Rate your music top movies list: Empire is ranked #42 all-time, Star Wars isn't even in the top 100 (it's ranked #101 to be exact).

Everyone's a critic top movies list: Empire is ranked #25 all-time, Star Wars is ranked #34 all-time

These are just numerous examples of the fact that Empire is held in higher regard than SW these days.

However, I've been told by older fans that wasn't always the case, and they are right.  Back in the day the original Star Wars was ranked #1 all-time on IMDb, where as Empire wasn't even in the top 30!.  I've also looked at various older polls and lists of the SW films being ranked, and Star Wars was generally ranked higher.  My question is, why the change of opinion?  Back in the day SW was considered the crowning achievement of the original trilogy, but these days Empire is king.  Anyone know why the opinions on both films have changed so drastically over the last 10-15 years?
