Judging by ESB & ROTJ original box office gross, here is why Lucas started to change
Time
It still completely boggles my mind how ESB was considered the undernourished sibling of the Star Wars Trilogy back in its day. I just can't even wrap my mind around it. Now it's the holy grail of the entire Star Wars saga how it should be. It was my favorite as a kid, and it's my favorite now. What was wrong with people in 1980?!

The Garlic Jr. saga?! Ugh, blech, no! Based on a crappy movie that can barely be squeezed into the timeline and still have continuity issues. But to each his own. I only liked it because Maron was hot. I was referring more to most of the Saiya-jin saga filler (aside from the crappy one you mentioned) like Yamucha being a baseball player, Goku falling to Hell (I mean, come on, he was warned about falling to hell in the manga... where was the payoff?! Nowhere!), and the Pendulum Room episode. Later on, the Great Saiyaman filler are some of my favorite episodes. I wish the manga had carried it farther. It freshened the series so much.

Oh, come on! I was closing the gap (albeit slowly) long before you moved! It's only a matter of time, man. As you can see, my post average is much higher than yours. You just had a half a year's head start on me. Quiver, no, tremble in fear! Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha!

I concur. I’ve got a niece that’s has worn DD cup bras since she was 12. Is that natural? No it’s hormone injections into the food supply.

That's exactly what I was thinking of. Er, I don't mean I was thinking of your niece's cup size. I mean, when I wrote that, I was thinking about how I'd heard that girls develop much more and at a much younger age than they traditionally did because of all the hormone injections in food. But, yeah, it's not natural.

Chris, most of the forums I go to are ones that only adults go to. This is an exception. You are shallow if you're going to insult Dath_Evil because of his age. Just because he's 13 doesn't mean that's a point of argument. You know, as I mentioned before - starship troopers has fantastic CGI, I forgot to mention that all the space ships in the movie were done with models just like in the original star wars trilogy ... and they look freaking unbelievable.

Yeah, one of the things that irritates me the most are people who dismiss others simply based on age. Not only is it such a general statement because development is so individual, but it proves that they can't come up with a legitimate point to argue, so they simply play on society's ageism.

You want an OT contradiction that can make your head hurt if you think too much about it? Return of the Jedi, as with ESB, Vader's entire motivation is to get Luke to turn to the dark side. He has selfish reasons for this, as he reveals in Empire.

The climax of Jedi is the Emperor working his magic to win Luke over the dark side with Vader cheering from the sidelines. When Luke finally gives into his anger and hate, takes up his saber and tries to kill the Emperor, something Vader tried talking him into in ESB...Vader stops him from doing so! That would have been it. Vader's two wishes would have been granted...Luke turns to the dark side AND kills the Emperor. Bonus!

But since Lucas couldn't come up with a better plot device and is a hack writer, he couldn't be bothered thinking something else up. Instead, we have this duel (and it is all about the action) where Vader keeps goading Luke, and tempting him to the dark side. He was just there! He gave into the dark side! He acted out of rage and hate against the Emperor, who Vader had no reason to protect as he had already invited Luke to join him and destroy the Emperor. Nothing about the throne room scenes makes any logical sense up until Palpy begins killing Luke.

That... is genius. You're absolutely right. I've often wondered why Vader was so happy and complacent to hear the Emperor say things like, "Take your father's place at my side!" and crap like that. It also made me wonder why Dooku didn't say anything when Palpatine said, "Kill him!" It's like Sith apprentices are just pussies (pardon me) who never stand up for themselves even when their master is about to throw them away! But I never thought of it from that angle before. Why the hell did Vader save the Emperor? It makes no sense! I wonder if I'll ever look at the movie the same way again...?

I don't think anyone's denying that, Randy. I think they're referring more to the fact that, in a lot of ways, ROTJ feels a bit out of place. Tones can change between "acts", but it can still feel like the same piece of work. The tone develops and changes through Romeo and Juliet, for example, but it never enters a level of silliness that makes you suddenly feel like you're watching something some other author tacked on to the end of it for no apparent reason. And I think that's what the people here are saying.

Personally, I don't see how anybody could have found ESB "too" dark, even as a little kid. Even when I was nine and first saw it, it was immediately my favorite. I loved the fact that the good guys got the crap beaten out of them. It brought out the drama. I loved the fact that the characters were developed more than the action. It was Star Wars with a bit of magic sprinkled onto it to build it up that much more than its predecessor. And it's not with increased action and effects (even though it had that too) like the prequels seem to be completely focused on (dual-lightsaber! Now two lightsabers and Yoda! Now ten-thousand ships and two simultaneous lightsaber duels with three others scattered throughout the movie!). Instead, it got better because it pushed the story along with everything else. ROTJ seemed weaker in comparison because, while it pushed some story farther, it was mostly concerned with pushing effects. It seemed like the story had been pushed about as far as it could, and they were just stretching it as much as possible.
