The last time you saw one of the Star Wars films

Wow, same here. The more I watch ROTS, the more I dislike about it. The things that I like really stand out, but you have to muddle through so much crap, it almost doesn't make it worth it. That's why I always say it's the best and the worst of the prequels. It contains the best moments of all the prequels (even a few of the strongest moments in all the movies, I have to admit), but it also contains all the worst moments too, in my opinion. And good moments a good movie do not make.

Yeah, I agree. I said in my last post that I didn't think it was done for character development by showing a young blood-lusting Yoda who became a pacifist, but only because it looked cool to have a CG Yoda jumping around like Sonic. All the things that needed explaining went by the wayside, and, instead, they just introduced a whole bunch of new plot elements... that weren't explained either.

Manga and Anime Fans

I know what you mean. There can be crappy Japanese cartoons, just as there are crappy American cartoons. Anime's not a genre, just like cartoons in general aren't a genre (even though they're both treated as such). I don't see what you have against buying tankoban, though. I mean, I think the prices are pretty good. Eight dollars for about 200 pages. That's not bad. And what's wrong with black and white? You don't see people saying that black and white movies should cost less than color movies (at least, not that I've seen).

Superman 2 The Donner Cut

Well, at least someone's cashing in on SR. I saw a commercial last night advertising Seasons 3 and 4 of The Adventures of Superman and Season 3 of Lois and Clark, adding in at the end an allusion to Superman returning this year.

I'm looking forward to reading it.

Hope I didn't sound too stupid in my last post. Of course I knew you had to have a British dialect. All I hear around here is that annoying Southern American dialect. Hope I'm not offending anybody, but I've lived here most of my life, so I think I'm allowed to say it. I hate the southern dialect. There are some variations that sound relatively charming, but others are just downright grating to my ears.

Interesting (at least I think so) story. My girlfriend was born in the "delta" and had a very thick accent as a little girl. When she showed me home movies of herself, I couldn't stop laughing because she sounds so different. When she got to be a certain age, she actually taught herself not to speak that way and to adopt a more "standard American". She helped tweak her dialect by, amazingly, emulating The Beatles.

Well, coming from that angle, a warrior who gets his ass handed to him and then has to retreat to a hermit-like existence for a generation and become a pacifist... I can buy that as character development. It happens all the time in stories. I just don't like the way it was handled. It was obvious it wasn't done for character development, only to be "cool." And I'm against Yoda using a lightsaber to begin with. Like I've said before, it seemed beneath him. Besides, as a kid, I always pictured the Jedi (or Force users in general) as being more diverse with their powers. There were some, like Ben, who channeled their powers into being able to duel with laser swords. Some, like Palpatine, channeled their power into using flesh-eating lightning. Others, like Yoda, used the Force to focus their wisdom and patience to a fine point. They all had different jobs. The prequels just turned them all into a bunch of spinning, lightsaber-wielding maniacs. And to make up for the homologous take on the Jedi? They made up a whole bunch of different lightsaber fighting styles to go along with the type of Jedi. Like the ambassador fighting style. Ambassador fighting style?! WTF, mate!

Yes, on a computer, you would have four black bars... well, assuming it's a wide screen, like mine is. That would render it quite tiny on my computer (which is what I primarily use for watching TV and movies when I'm at school).

Some software DVD players have a zoom function that allows you to get rid of the vertical black bars. The Apple DVD Player on Mac OS X (10.4), for example...
Who has widescreen computer monitors anyway? Movies will look better on TV's then on monitors.

People that use Apple computers? Apple monitors and Apple notebooks screens are all widescreens (the aspect ratio is 16:10, on all models).

As to movies looking better on a TV than a monitor, I don't see why there should be a difference.

I don't know about Apple, but mine's a Compaq with a widescreen. And aren't computer monitors supposed to have a higher resolution than televisions anyway? I suppose that's just CT monitors compared to SD TVs, right? Well, in any case, I have an HD screen on my computer...

I know on my monitor even anamorphic DVDs show their limitations with compression artifiacting and what not. I can't help but worry that these will look many times worse.

Yeah, my monitor picks up grain and artifacting a lot worse than a regular screen as well.

Personally, I love how the mind never forgets. I've seen a lot of girls who, when a relationship ends, tear up every shred of evidence that would ever place them with that guy. I just can't understand that. The past is what prepares us for the future. And memories, as bad as they might seem at the time, will provide insight, or even become cherished or humorous as time goes by. We wouldn't be the people today if not for the scars we earned struggling through life. Isn't it exciting?

Yeah, this whole thing is starting to make me uncomfortable as well, and I wouldn't be surprised if Mississippi in the general sense is as bad (if not worse) than North Dakota, although I can't say I've seen much in terms of bigotry that matches the stereotype (although we more than meet our quota for dumb hicks).

This is going to sound really stupid, but I've never really thought about it, despite the fact that I must have known it sub-consciously. You must have a strong British accent, don't you, YIYF? That was practically rhetorical, just so I don't sound completely ridiculous. In case you haven't noticed, text doesn't lend itself to dialects very well. But, yeah, that must sound pretty out of place in ND. I'd like to hear more about your experiences with the "natives." While we get a lot of Asians here, I can't seem to recall ever encountering a single person from the British Isles here.

Sets
Time
I was inspired to make this thread by a discussion in another thread about how many physical models were used in the prequels and how a lot of the physical stuff were comped in as backgrounds for the actors, like the Kamino interiors and the Geonosian battle arena. Now, in my opinion, that creates a level of realism above that of a CG-created environment, because, even though it's still live actors against blue screen, the background actually exists. If given a choice, though, I would pick life-sized constructed sets with CG enhancements, though. That's assuming I wouldn't be able to have completely real sets to begin with (and you know in this case that's not going to happen). I'm talking, like, build as much real as humanly possible and then add in CG to get otherworldly or completely impractical things in there, like a room with a 150-foot high ceiling. Just build the ground-level real and add in the high parts with CG. That I would prefer over models because the actors have something to interact with. But again, don't let me confuse you with Episode III's "sets" that consisted of a real door or one wall with the rest green or blue screen. So I give you the choices of your favorites (and I know I've made this too wordy to be coherent): blue screen with real models comped in, real sets with minor or somewhat substantial CG enhancements, or, just to be fair, full CG environments?

Say the SE release in theaters bombed in 1997?
Time
I'm sure George would have pushed forward with the SEs anyway. He had to do something for his test dummies for the prequels. Grr, am I the only person who gets offended when I am reminded of that? But, anyway, to not derail my own post... Knowing George (which I don't, personally), I wouldn't be surprised if he got so bitter that his SEs didn't sell well, that he would have obliterated the OOT anyway, just so we'd have to watch it. So, really, not much different from our current reality.
