Spirited Away
Time
Has anybody here seen Miyazaki's film Sen and Chihiro's Spiriting Away, or, as it was shortened for its American release, Spirited Away? It is such an awesome movie. I saw most of the dub on Turner Classic Movies back in January, I believe, and then on another station a few weeks ago... actually, I think it was July 4th. So then, yesterday, I finally bought the DVD and got to see the full thing in its original language. The artwork is so beautiful and the story so imaginative. It was the highest grossing film in the history of Japanese cinema and won the Oscar for Best Animated Film, so, hopefully, I'm not the only person here who's seen it...

Finally Got Rid of My 2004 DVD's...

Especially since Vader was "born" long before he was burned.

But, yeah, the fact that he has Dooku doing flips totally negates his statement about, "The original lightsaber fight isn't as good because it's a machine man versus an old man." Riiiight. So, yeah, both Dooku and Grievous ruin his statement, even though I personally found nothing bad about any of the OT fights.

Lucas is a businessman - Don't believe what he says
Time
Heh, I know. Pretty much, if I had to choose between buying the Sept releases and a new individual release that had a good transfer, I'd buy the latter. But if I had to choose between the Sept releases and a pristine version of the trilogy in a huge boxset, I'd have to go with the Sept. Despite the lesser quality, I'd still feel like I was getting ripped off less.

I thought that sequence was reasonably well thought out, it was just that they kept talking ("From point of the view the Jedi are evil!" Will you just shut up and fight?). The idea for the big, climactic duel was impressive (as comared to Luke and Vader's more intimate battles), but, as with the rest of the PT, the execution left something to be desired, and Anikan's jump and Obi-wan's slice struck me as incredibly anti-climactic. Again, I apologize if seem like I was attacking you or something. I meant to no offense! It's good that you're sending the discs back. The battle with Lucas isn't over yet, apparently.

Geez, the talking was the best part of that fight. Like DE said, the fight became so over the top it was laughable. Having a giant catwalk thing fall into the lava and fight on that. Come inches to the lava fighting on droids and pieces of metal and never get burned, but end up on the banks, and your entire body catched on fire? No, the dialogue was actually good!

Well, I'm sure that uber box set will cost more total than these releases will. Besides, I don't want new copies of the PT. I already own them. If the new rumors about an anamorphic transfer are true, then the September releases will be good enough for me without the need of some wallet-draining special edition 6 chapter saga box set.

The rumor is false. However, we must remember that that is probably exactly what Lucas wants. If restored anamorphic 5.1/2.0/mono versions are in the high-priced set, people like me would pay an exhorbitant amount for the set. Lucas may be testing the waters with this release to see if there is a market for it at all. If the John Q. public is willing to buy the OOT, then audio/videophiles would certainly pay for a good version. Lucas may be stubborn, but he is certainly not stupid. I hope that we are right in our optimistic beliefs. Cross your fingers. I hope that we do not have to wait too long.

The cycle will no doubt continue on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

And hopefully on other formats to come.

Well, the point is, I would not be willing to buy a huge boxset even if the OOT were on it and pristine to the point of pants-crapping perfection. I love the movies, but I'm not willing to shell out a couple hundred dollars when I only want about 1/3 to 1/4 of the content I'm paying for, and the rest is useless to me. If I hated chocolate with coconut in it, I wouldn't buy a huge sampler box that had 25 coconut candies just so I could have 6 butter creams, would you? Hopefully nobody's that insane unless they just have an exorbitant amount of money. And I happen to not have that kind of money, and I refuse to be screwed around with anymore.

Will There be Further Changes to the 09/12 SE Discs?
Time
I don't think they'll be changed any. They have stated that these will be the '04 versions, the same as what appeared in '05 as well. The fact that they acknowledge that the '04 editions and '97 editions are two separate entities is enough proof to me that, if they were to be changing things, they would have said something. As it is, their main (well, only) draw to this set is that it has the theatrical cuts with them (despite the PR bull that states the main reason is that they are releasing the movies separately for the first time, their marketing campaign speaks otherwise), even though they're of inferior quality and on Disc 2 of all places!

Fox France confirms the French OOT release >NOT< to be anamorphic
Time
If it's anamorphic and a good-looking transfer, I will be content with these releases, and they'll be my final SW movie purchases (although maybe I shouldn't say that, as it will give Lucas an incentive to screw it up just so I'll repurchase over and over again). I don't care about a 5.1 mix. Stereo's good enough for me. Besides, like others have mentioned, the mixes done for the '04 set suck. Please don't let him just slap that mix on there, cutting out the SE stuff. I'd better be able to hear the damned Force theme during the Yavin battle, or there will be hell to pay. Creative decisions, my ass! And I'd rather they didn't mess with the picture. The less they touch, the less they can screw up. So yeah, I just want anamorphic with good picture and a not 2004 sound mix, and I'll be happy. Let's see if they can do something that simple.

Don't fret, Jenny. We have dozens of those at the store I work at. Well... maybe you should fret some since I doubt there's any way you can get one. But if Mississippi has them, then surely you can find some place that has them.

HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE

Hmm. Notice how they wait until the movie's coming out instead of attacking the book that came out 5 years before the movie! Greedy much?

Yeah, they should have taken the $50,000, but I don't think they should have taken it that far in the first place. So a real band and a fictional band have the same name? Big freaking deal! Feel flattered. Or at the very least just shrug it off.

I hate how creativity is limited because of fear of lawsuits.

An exact quote from Lucas on Greedo shooting first.

As was pointed out recently, the logic for the change is ludicrous since there are so many other "cold-blooded" moments perpetrated by Han and other characters. Han shoots at Darth Vader unprovoked in ESB. Yoda slices off two Clone Troopers' heads in ROTS. Hell, even R2 tazers a fleeing Ewok in ROTJ. I think we should compile a list of all the other "cold-blooded killer" moments in Star Wars movies. Anybody want to continue from where I left off?

Star Wars prequel Box set
Time
I'm not looking forward to a prequel boxset or an Ultimate Pants Crapping Lollapalooza 25 Disc Super Edition Saga Box! I already own the prequels on DVD. I don't need a box to put them in. Considering the DVDs of them I already own are the closest we're ever going to get to the theatrical editions of the prequels, any new releases are just going to be worse. And I'm certainly not going to buy a box set of all the movies, not even if the OT is anamorphic, because I refuse to buy 3 movies I already own and don't want anymore copies of just to buy three movies that I own several times in a format that's finally acceptable. But since many Star Wars fans are stupid (you can decide for yourselves if present company is excluded) and will readily buy up any new release with zeal, even if it's not worth it, I'm sure it'll fly off the shelves.

I, for one, will not be joining in on the Pants Crapping Lollapalooza.

Geez, come on, Sessler. You couldn't get to the Council yet? What are you waiting for? A fanfare? Why leave it so close?! You're stressing me out, man!

But then again, once you do, it'll mean that it will be impossible to be in the top 10 without at least having been accepted to the council!

Pirates of the Caribbean Two
Time
I just got back from seeing it. I really hadn't planned on doing so for a few reasons. One, although I saw the first movie in theatres three years ago (geez, has it been that long?!) I really barely remember a single thing about it. Secondly, it was so pants-wetting Depp-erific to my girlfriend and all her friends that just thinking about the first movie after three years made me wretch or, in softer moments, roll my eyes. And third, she and her friends dressed up for it and went out tonight to see it without attempting to include me. But then an old high school friend of mine (actually, as far back as elementary school), who I hadn't seen in nearly a year and a half, called me up and invited me to see it. I just thought it would be too deliciously naughty to give myself the possibility of "accidentally" bumping into them, so I decided to accept. I never saw them, but I enjoyed the movie much more than I thought I would.

Be on alert for spoilers. Ye shall tread no further than this point! ARrrr!

Like I said, I don't remember the first movie much at all, so the characters and continuing story were pretty much lost on me, except for a few exceptions. But the action was good, the Bootstrap Bill scenes were fun, and the swordfight on the water wheel, while a bit far-fetched, was quite entertaining. I also loved the eunich joke, because I'm just a fan of eunich jokes. But I agree that it had that Empire Strikes Back feel to it. I could see the cliffhanger ending coming. The only thing I regret not seeing in this movie is Will confronting Elizabeth about her kissing Jack. I almost wanted to see Will not agree to search for Jack at the end of the movie, just to show how pissed off he was. The CG was really quite impressive, and I didn't find myself thinking about the special effects like I would with the Star Wars prequels, even when it came to Davy Jones most of the time.

So, yeah. It was a fun movie, and I can't wait to rub my girlfriend's nose in it... if she can stop her gushing long enough to listen to me, that is. ^_~

Favorite Stuff of All Time

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say SSJ4. I merely stated that his involvement was at the beginning of the series, and SSJ4 is much farther in than that. I don't really have an airtight way to confirm my knowledge. Like you said, it's been debated endlessly. So I guess we're at a stalemate, huh? ^_^

All I can say is that, while I've never heard one way or the other whether Toriyama was involved with the Goku Jr. storyline, I CAN say with 100% certainty that it was a TV special and NOT a movie, since DBGT had no movies attached to it. The closest to a GT movie was the 4th DB 10th anniversary movie that was created during GT, uses more GT-ish character designs, and uses Dan Dan Kokoro as a theme.
