Prequelize the OT
Time
Geez, this sounds more like the dub of Speed Racer than the prequels. ^_^

VADER: You are beaten and are at the mercy of the blade of my lightsaber that I now wield against you. Ha, haha! Resistance is futile! Do not make me kill you like Obi-Wan, the former mentor to both of us but who is now dead! Argh, you hurt my shoulder! Take this omnipotently powerful Sith move!
LUKE: Argh! Are you not aware that that was my hand you just sliced off with the blade of your lightsaber!
VADER: There is no way for you to escape... can you not see that we are hanging off a precipice at the edge of a seemingly bottomless pit? Any attempt at escape would seem suicidal! But to get more to the point, your importance is not to be underestimated. Your latent power is still lying dormant and latent inside of your very own body. Make yourself an apprentice to me! In fact, the Emperor, my dark lord and master who is also the ruler of the entire Empire, hence the title of Emperor, is afraid that you could bring about his untimely end. The power of the dark side, that being the dark side of the Force, is very powerful indeed. In fact, it is so powerful that I suddenly feel compelled to fill in the gaps of the mysterious disappearance of your mysterious father, a sequence of events previously described to you by our former mentor, Obi-Wan, who is now dead.
LUKE: Argh! Do not make it appear that I am ignorant. Our former mentor, Obi-Wan, who is now dead, told me all I needed to know about that story already! Cease your talking. I am already aware of the fact that my father is dead, and it is you who killed him because he is dead!
VADER: What a pitiful excuse for the truth, for that is not the truth but instead a lie. In fact, the very essence of fact for this particular debate is that you are my progeny. In other words, I am your paternal parent.
LUKE: Argh! What is this anguish I feel! These words you speak cannot be true or even possible. In fact, they negate every sense of truth and fact that I actually know. I am actually shaking with pain, rage, betrayal, and confusion. Why torment me with such emotions?

George Lucas to host showing of Star Wars "1977" for AFI's 40th anniversary.
Time
I'm not entirely sure about that. Lucas does have the power to keep the original version from being shown. He owns the movie, and if AFI wants to show the film, they have to cowtow to Lucas to get it. Sure, they could take a vocal stance against it, and it would be nice if they did, but it's really something the majority of people don't care about/won't notice, and it will just cause discord between Lucas and the AFI. Not saying I agree with it, but I can certainly understand why they would avoid the confrontation in that case.

I do, however, find it funny that, viewing the list of films they are presenting, Star Wars is now the only one that contains absolutely no date at all, replacing the year with the words "Special Edition" in parentheses.

Rocky (1976)
Beauty and the Beast (1991)
Star Wars (Special Edition)

Well, glad your e-mails managed to get through to them (sorry to say I never sent one myself), although now it would be nice to know which special edition. I'm putting my money on the 2004 version because if there's anything better than film revisionism, it's film revisionism caked on top of old revisionism!

Yeah, I did always think it was weird that Shorty just disappeared from the story like that. Maybe it wouldn't have been convenient to have him tagging along all the time, but can you imagine how that broke his little heart when his beloved Dr. Jones just took off without him.

Or maybe back in America social services heard about all the dangerous situations Indy was putting his young ward in and said, "Uh-uh..."

Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Movie in 2009

Well, pretty close at any rate. The CBS Saturday morning version was certainly intended to be a kids' show, or it never would have been put in that time slot to begin with. But that was based off Pee Wee's Playhouse on HBO, which was very much targeted to adults.

Why the hell did the lazy Emperor even think Luke would join the dark side and become his new apprentice?!

CO, do you really think we're supposed to believe that the dark side is more powerful? I mean, Yoda point-blank refuted that when Luke asked him in ESB. Unless of course, you just mean a quick power-up, rather than an overall higher threshhold of power...

How do you know Yoda isn't lying to Luke in ESB? Why would Yoda tell him that the Darkside is stronger, wouldn't that make a young student like Luke more eager to possibly embrace it? Yoda sends Luke to the cave to teach him a lesson, and I think Yoda does that with the power of the force too. Remember, you can't think in terms of 1,2,3 when you watch the OT, and the power of the darkside is alot more respected.

I really don't think that, overall, the dark side is stronger, but it's "quicker" like Yoda said. You channel that emotion, that anger, and the resulting power gained is, of course, there. But it's like the difference between taking steroids and working out for real. The steroids will give you want you want, but you're at the mercy of that "drug", like you stated yourself. I honestly don't think Yoda was lying about what he told Luke, though. And you should know me better than to presume that I'm thinking in terms of the prequels when I come to this conclusion.

I was thinking that too until I watched ROTJ again a few nights ago. Palpatine continually says, "It is unavoidable." He doesn't have to do anything. He's already done all the plotting. He has brought Luke where he needs to be with the people he needs to be with and to witness what he needs to witness (the destruction of the Rebel fleet). All Palpatine has to do is watch (with glee) the resulting screw-ups. And he does. Luke does give into his anger and almost does kill Vader. It's almost like a Roman emperor pitting his two best gladiators together. It doesn't really matter to him who wins. If Vader wins, Luke is dead, and their biggest threat is gone. If Luke wins, the Emperor gets a shiny new apprentice.

I'm assuming maybe it will grow on me eventually, but, blech! Honestly, it's only a single syllable longer than Raiders of the Lost Ark, but for some reason, that flows while this just trips over the tongue like a guy on roller skates falling down the stairs. Come to think of it, though, Raiders of the Lost Ark almost sounds bad when you try to retcon the Indiana Jones title in front of it. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Just a touch too long, a touch too difficult. Still, not nearly as bad and convoluted as "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith."

If you search back a little bit, you'll find a thread about The Secret History of Star Wars, a book written by one of our forum members, zombie84. Not only is it a wonderful read in itself, but it details quite exhaustively the history of how many movies were planned at any given time. At one point, there were going to be twelve movies, with the original Star Wars being the first chapter (not the fourth) in that twelve movie series.

Well, in that case he simply would do it because, like you said, that is the way it's supposed to be. He's going to be nudged in that direction by fate or a space-time continuum preservation mechanism, or what have you... In that case, yeah, there does seem to be the wheels of something bigger turning. So, yeah, you're pretty much right on the money there, and I have to concede a little bit.

This is getting off Harry Potter and into my own philosophies, but I have always been of the mind that just because, in my mind, there's a divine plan, that does not negate the possibility or the importance of free will. Just because it is predestined what someone does, does that really keep him from making a choice? Most of the time, except for fictional examples mostly, no one's going to know what that predestined outcome will be, so it doesn't enter into the equation of choice. It's even dealt with in Harry Potter. We have the prophecies. In this case, Dumbledore states that they are not infallible, but that, in the case of Harry and Voldemort, they are self-fulfilling because Voldemort chooses to act upon them. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's something that is predestined but only through someone's choice. There are many examples of this in literature and drama, like Oedipus. In this case, obviously, the Greeks believe in predestiny exclusively, but it's always one's choices that bring about their doom. There are some who would say that no matter what happened, fate would twist its way around to make sure that Oedipus killed Laertes and married Iocasta, but I'm not sure I believe that. I think it's more that the prophecy was able to take into account how Laertes and Iocasta (and later Oedipus) would interpret the prophecy and how they would react to it. Had they not gone crazy and taken those specific steps to prevent it, the outcome probably wouldn't have happened. But it knew they would choose to behave a certain way. I know that's not what the Greeks had in mind, but that's how I've always figured out the balance between predestination and free will. We just have it easy because, in the real world, we're never forced into a position where we know what will happen to us and then have to decide whether to act on it or leave it alone, and if any of it will make any difference.

I don't know about that. After all, when you use the term "fixed timeline", you're only referring to it in terms of time travel. It's fixed in the sense that what is being fixed is the past to those who have meddled with it. And since it is the past, the events have already happened, whether or not they are time travel related. I mean, removing time travel from the equation entirely, the past is still unchangeable, and your choices have no influence over it. It's the present and the future that are able to be influenced by one's choices. That's the point Dumbledore's trying to make. So really, which method of time travel is used really does not have an effect on those themes, at least as far as I can see.

Geez, where were all the video game nerds when I needed them?! Well, I finally found out that there is a rare glitch where it simply won't let certain characters learn Level 4 limit breaks. Cloud and Barrett were the victims this time around, but no one else seemed to have any trouble at all. Geez, for what's supposedly "the greatest game ever made" to many people, it sure does have a lot of really crappy glitches. Turns out, though, that I didn't even need it. Sephiroth was easier than he'd ever been. Never even damaged me enough for me to be able to use a limit break. In fact, all three of my characters were at full health when he bit it.

Hello, I'm Hustler

Heh, nice to see this is getting off on the right foot. Welcome, Hustler. If you have half a brain and common sense, I'm sure you'll do very well here. This is a relaxed sort of place, so as long as you don't go violently crazy here (e.g. ZigFried) no one will get on your case. This place isn't too big on rules and regulations unlike some other places, so, yeah, come on in and chew the fat!

I really don't know. I wish I did so I could get over it, but something about it just irks me. I think it might be, because it was more of an action score than an epic, sweeping score. I like music that can make you cry. Something that really tears at your emotions and I didn't feel that with GOF. This is the type of music I like: Message For The Queen

Interesting debate. I remember the music being good in GoF, but I don't think it matched the story in an emotional sense. I remember that when I was reading GoF and the wands made their connection at the end, I was shaking with shock, sadness, and tension during that entire scene. I actually went so far as to invent a haunting Phoenix birdsong on the spot and it gave me goosebumps. The movie seemed to have completely forgotten about the birdsong at that part, however. It seemed to miss much of the dark, somber mood of that battle. That made me disappointed. A sad but powerful song was best suited there.

The movie captured Goblet's humor and the nature of the tri-wizard tests perfectly though, and the final battle still works very well despite not being what I would have wanted.

My favorite memories of the score were the end of the maze when Harry and Cedric raced for the cup. The music pumps me up for that every time, and I don't mind that that's totally different than how the book presented it. And I also loved the Hogwarts March when Harry reappeared after the graveyard. The counterpoint of the music to the emotion was done so well that it actually made me cry the first two times I saw it.

Graaah! I'm so frustrated! Maybe someone here can help me out. I'm playing through Final Fantasy VII right now for the first time in several years, and I cannot for the life of me get Cloud to learn Omnislash. I have the item, but he refuses to learn it. I've been to over a dozen sites, and they all say the same thing: that the only requirement to use the "manual" for the 4th limit break is to already have every other limit break for the character. Well, that's not a problem as I've long since learned all of Cloud's: Braver, Cross-Slash, Blade Beam, Climhazzard, Meteorain, and Finishing Touch. But he still refuses to learn it. There must be something I'm missing. Do I have to be at a certain level (currently on 76)? Has anybody had this happen to them before?

In any case, the time travel aspect of Azkaban always bothered me. I think making time travel a possibility in Harry's world was the single worst mistake that Rowling made in the series, because that leads to the question -- why didn't Aurors USE them to stop Voldemort before he gained power? Or, if they were a recent invention and they couldn't go back too far, why not go back and stop Voldemort from coming back in GoF? Etc. etc. I love stories about time travel but only if that's the driving force behind the story (like Back to the Future, Lightning by Dean Koontz, etc.). Otherwise, introducing that factor tends to muddle things up.

I've actually been thinking about this, because you made me think about it in a way I hadn't considered before. But ultimately I realized why it wouldn't be able to work. Based on the book (and even more apparent in the movie) is that Rowling's view of a time travel is a fixed timeline, unlike, say, Back to the Future, where you can actually change events. For example, Harry saving himself and Hermione with the Patronus in all instances of that timeline, not just when he went back and did it. If Voldemort could have been stopped that way, then it would have already happened, and it obviously didn't.

More importantly, and probably logistically why no Auror would try it is because it would create a horrible paradox. If they did destroy Voldemort in the past, there would be no reason in the future for them to go back to the past and attempt it, which means that no one would, so Voldemort wouldn't be defeated, etc...

Yeah, I agree that I just don't see where all the Columbus hate comes from. He certainly was the best at accomplishing the notion that the movies should follow the books. With the later books being so big and necessitating large cutting and reworking, I'm not sure how he'd fare, but he did do pretty well with those first two. Admittedly, parts of the first movie were a bit sappy, but I love Chamber of Secrets to this day. I loved Cuaron's style, but I hated how really important stuff was lost. Mike Newell did a great job with Goblet of Fire. I felt he was able to maintain everything that was truly important as well as add in several little touches that set it apart. I've only seen OotP once, but David Yates seems to have been able to accomplish something similar. So while I like Cuaron's style, I feel Azkaban is the weakest of the movies, and the series is still suffering from it (most notably the sudden inclusion of the nicknames Wormtail and Padfoot, which have no precedent for being used).

How did it end on a cliffhanger? Was there a season four? Because the last episode I remember was the musical that handily summed up all of season three's convoluted plotline and ended up with two different Enzos.

Although, as I write this I think I remember reading about a continuation of the series past that, although I don't think it ever aired where I am.
