Fact: The software update still somewhat scares me, and I happen to like the boards the way they are.

But it is funny because I remember a couple of years ago wondering if I'd be able to make it Jedi Master before the software update happened, and you (Chalts) actually said that if Jay got it there when he promised he would, I wouldn't have a chance. Tee hee. But, yeah, I'm certainly not one of the ones bitching in Jay's direction for not getting it off the ground on time. I mean, I'm sure it'll be great, but, at the same time, I still like the boards the way they are now.

Hmm, did zombie mess that one up? I've read the whole book (the earlier edition) and don't recall noticing it. I remember heated debates about the difference between the two on these boards, and I could have sworn zombie was the one with the knowledge on the subject. Oh, well. Like 3PX said, it's a huge (and very awesome) book, so some mistakes are bound to slip past once in a while.

I know! It's been driving me crazy! My posting has really dropped in the past year or so. I estimate that I'm the 11th highest-ranked poster here, but I'm just not doing enough to break into the top 10! Heh, I bet I told TheSessler nearly a year ago that he'd better watch out for me, but so far I haven't posed much of a threat.

I've always considered this one of our few "catch all" threads. At least, I've usually used it that way, otherwise all you have in here is a list of post counts. But, man, this has been an eventful weekend so far, and I missed all of it. A brand new troll of our very own, and quite a lot of activity for a Saturday. I mean, usually we're pretty much dead on Saturdays. So does anyone know if that dos hellthingy guy has been banned yet?

I don't know. I mean, this thing has been floating around in prepro hell for several years, but they seem really serious about it this time. I think, like it or not, it's going to happen. Although, not that I've decided if it should happen at all, if they were going to do it, they should have done it seven years ago. Seems like a strange time now to finally plow through with it.

Wow, you're all over the place tonight, Dayv. Glad to see you.

I don't know how I feel about this live-action movie. I guess we'll just have to see how it goes. But its story is probably rooted in the dub, which is horrible, and which will undoubtedly make me cringe while watching it. But, really, I have an open mind about it. I actually liked the Super Mario Bros. movie.

I don't know. I'm still waiting until the movie actually comes out. I mean, everybody complained about Rocky Balboa until it actually came out, and it was received as a much better ending than Rocky V (since I've never seen either, I can't really say). While Last Crusade was certainly no Rocky V, an older Indy doesn't necessarily mean it will be bad. I mean, old people aren't useless. Look at Marcus Brody! He was great! And it's not like Harrison Ford is elderly or even approaching decrepit. While he's looking a bit rougher, he still looks like he can pull it off (based on those pictures HotRod posted).

A New Thought on George
Time
But on the flip side of that coin, hardly anybody had anything good to say about Star Wars when Lucas was first coming up with it (other than Spielberg, supposedly). None of his friends understood, the studio criticized it, the cast and crew didn't believe in it. But Lucas pretty much said, "Screw all of you guys, I'm doing what I want," and we ended up with a great movie. So he did the same thing on the prequels... and it didn't quite work out. The question is: when do you accept other people's opinions and when do you simply charge ahead? It can be pretty difficult to figure out that line. At least, I think it is.

Why, oh, why do they cancel shows this good???
Time
Heh, it seems like every six months or so we get a new Firefly thread. Hell, I did it myself two years ago when I first saw it. But I never get tired of talking about it! It's just such an awesome show. In fact, I got a new roommate this year, and I convinced him to watch it. He'd heard about it and had always been told that he should. He watched and, just like everyone else I've shown it to, was immediately hooked. Interestingly, Jayne immediately became his favorite character, so I have to assume that Jaynestown was one of his favorite episodes. He even frequently calls Jayne his hero. Sadly, however, he hates River with an undying passion, and wishes that Simon and River had stayed on Jyaingyin with those "hill people" just to get River out of the picture. In more recent episodes, he thought River shooting the guards in "War Stories" was cool and loved the line, "Also... I can kill you with my brain." Of course, his hatred for River makes me wonder exactly how he's going to handle Serenity. Well, we still have two episodes to go: "Heart of Gold" and "Objects in Space."

Ian McDiarmid's performance in the PT (also the OT) is memorable and absolutely enthralling
Time
Yeah, that's what I always thought too. And it's the same for Chewbacca. I kept hearing all these comments from George in ROTS documentaries about how Chewbacca is in the "junior league" on Kashyyk at that point. And that didn't make any sense to me, either, since it had always been stated that he was 200 years old, so 19 years really wouldn't seem like that much of an age gap to him, would it?

Why Anakin should have been 20 years old in TPM.

Yeah, you're right, that is what I was thinking of. It has been a long time seen the movie. Disregard my post.

Though it doesn't make a lot of since that Obi-Wan and Yoda would just sit by and watch as the two last hopes for the future of the galaxy and the Jedi order aged beyond training ability. In fact, since training begins at such a young age in the PT (how old are those youngling? Five or six? It would have made more since for Obi and Yoda to each take a twin, go their seperate ways and train them, since it wouldn't be a very long wait before they could train them. Then if either were to be discovered, only one potential future Jedi and one Jedi master would be lost. Or if neither were discovered, as the case turned out to be, then two fully and properly trained Jedi Knights could have emerge from hiding and brought down the Sith, rather than one Jedi with very little training who came pretty close to botching it, and the other not even knowing they had the ability to be a Jedi, and no one to train her even if she did.

Yeah... damn! I didn't even think about that one before. People have been pointing out for nearly three years the stupid nature of their "plan", but sheesh. The more George adds on to this story, the less sense any of it makes. I remember seeing TPM for the first time and hearing Windu say Anakin was too old, mirroring Yoda's assessment of Luke and going, "Damn, how young do you have to be?!" Apparently an insanely-young continuity-breaking age...

Which leads us to believe that Obi-Wan did not begin his training till he was around Luke's age. Nothing wrong with this in itself (other than the whole prequel idea of training starting with "younglings"), but if I am not mistaken (and I very well may be) I believe Yoda gives one of the excuses for not wanting Anakin to be trained is because he is too old. At the age of nine. If this is right than Obi-Wan being near Luke's age was WAY too old.

Actually, it seems like you're imagining things, C3PX. Obi-Wan never talks about his own age in that scene. The dialogue is:

Yoda: He is too old. Yes, too old to begin the training.
Luke: But I've learned so much.
Yoda: Will he finish what he begins?
Luke: I won't fail you. I'm not afraid.
Yoda: Oh. You will be. You will be.

As you can see, Ben had already given his last line by that point, which was the similar, "Was I any different when you taught me?" which is probably what you're thinking of.

The Beginning: Making 'Episode I': A comedy masterpiece
Time
Well, besides the implausibility of 3PO's head and body to be able to work independently of one another, I think that whole premise might have been humorous if not for the atrocious lines of dialogue they had him say during it. Complain all you want to about Anakin and Padme, the really horribly scriptwriting in that movie is definitely directed at that poor droid: "I'm scrap!" "I'm quite beside myself!" "This is such a drag!" Ugh! Made me wonder if they were trying to make the audience groan. So pathetically written, so forced at humor, so out of character, and so out of universe when you start throwing in pop culture slang! The only two one-liners I actually enjoyed were, "I'm so confused!" and, to a slightly lesser degree, "I'm programmed for etiquette, not destruction!"

The Dark Knight (Batman Begins Returns Again)
Time
I'm not saying it should be done. I'm just saying that her role didn't seem significant enough (well-portrayed as I thought it was) to really miss her had she not been in there. Despite the fact that I read that somewhere (Wikipedia, I think) that the role was initially going to be male... Harvey Dent even, Rachel seemed a bit extraneous at times. Like, for example, you have Mary Jane being a prominent agent of action; she motivates Peter to act and Spider-Man to act, even if, in that respect, that role is damsel in distress. Bruce already has a strong enough motivating force and characters (including himself) to struggle with, that adding in a female just seemed extraneous.

You know, on an unrelated note, I was just thinking that having an overly vengeful and driven Batman really only works for a movie... i.e., in small doses. It works very well then. But in series and comics (and I admit I haven't been following the comics for years) it seems necessary to add quite a bit more humanity to him. I readily agree with that because a Batman as dour as Begins version could get to on a regular basis could just get so bogged down in emotion that it's not really fun anymore. How can such a force exist for so long? How can we believe that a soul as tortured as that could function for so many years? Once in a while, you do (or at least I do) have a soft spot for a happier Batman, leading a sidekick Robin, like in the comics from the '40s-'60s. Maybe not so campy as it was in a lot of the '50s and '60s, but, you know...

It's not that I mind the love interest aspect... at least when it works and has an importance to plot or character. I think it works well in the Spider-Man movies. I think it's pivotal to Superman. I'm just tired of all of them filling the exact same role. Being essentially helpless for so long just gets irritating to watch after a while. And I have to say that in Batman Begins, Rachel just didn't seem too terribly important. I think Katie Holmes did well, and there were a few good moments she had, but if the movie could be edited to cut out all of her scenes, I doubt you'd really miss her all that much.

Funny you should mention that, ADM, since, when I was watching BB, I couldn't help but think that none of the Batman ladies, or "leading ladies" in superhero franchises in general, are worth anything at all. Basically, the only role they serve is to be loved by and then rescued by the hero. Once in a while, they'll show a little spunk, get a little dirt in the villain's eye. But ultimately, they're kidnapped, absconded, and put in a precarious situation that only the hero can save them from. If they're lucky, they'll have the opportunity to say something profound that causes the hero to think about his actions and other such introspective ideas. Take the Spider-Man films. Three films. Three climaxes. All three are set up by having Mary Jane kidnapped and Spider-Man having to rush in to save her. I don't think Kim Bassinger screamed even a third as much as Kirsten Dunst has over the course of this trilogy. Honestly, part of me wishes they'd remove the whole romantic interest part of superhero films at all since they exist only as plot devices but are basically worthless outside of that. Take the pinnacle of Batman movies, for example, Batman & Robin! They cast Elle MacPherson as Julie Madison... but why? Why did that character even exist in that movie? She did nothing! Yeah, obviously the example is just a turd in a larger pile of crap, but still...

As Catwoman said in Batman Returns, the only thing females in superhero movies do is, "wait around for some Batman to come and save you."
