It’s never easy to bring a passion project to a halt. Although I previously announced there would be no further updates, I’m pleased to share that new work is currently underway.

While Mackey256 continues his efforts to clean and restore the original broadcast video recordings of the show, I will be dedicating myself to remastering the sound and broadcast audio recordings—this time with a much higher level of professional precision. There’s even a chance the final result may surpass the audio quality found on the official DVD release.

How is this possible? As it turns out, a former roommate of mine—who also happens to be a devoted fan of the show—is a professional sound engineer. He has kindly offered to assist me throughout the process by sharing expert insights, tips, and techniques.

In the meantime, please enjoy the current release of our version of the show. More updates will follow in due course.

While I would not exclude the possibility of this happening in the future since I notice a high demand for it, for the moment this is the definitive release for what I had in scope when I started this project.

Since I dedicated a significant amount of time to accomplish what we have so far, I will need to take a breather to focus on other personal areas as well.

Which scenes exactly are missing from the DVDs? I have the DVDs now and when I was a kid I recorded the series from Cartoon Network on a tape. I haven’t noticed any missing scenes…

There are three scenes that were never included in the DVD releases:

  • Chapter 2: This episode’s ending uses alternate footage where the droid sniper targets the ARC troopers as they emerge from the wreckage of the LA-AT.

  • Chapter 9: The episode opens with a high-angle view of Muunilinst’s sky and buildings, then pans down to street level as Obi-Wan passes by on his speeder.

  • Chapter 18: Begins with an extra shot of Anakin dueling Ventress, a sequence omitted from the Volume I edit but briefly visible in the DVD menu.

I just checked out the project. It’s really amazing! Congrats!!
Do you plan on including the “previously” and “next on chapter xx” like in the original releases? What about the scenes that were excluded from the DVD release, like the battle droid targeting the clone trooper, do you plan on including them?

Thank you! 😃

At one point, I considered restoring the PREVIOUSLY / NEXT segments and the deleted shots, but ultimately chose not to for the following reasons:

  • Since all episodes can be watched consecutively, I felt the PREVIOUSLY / NEXT segments weren’t necessary. During marathon blocks of the show, these segments were typically absent, with the presentation consisting of just Intro/Transmission > Episode > Lucasfilm/CN Bumpers.

  • While it would have been possible to reintegrate the shots excluded from the DVD release using broadcast recordings, even with extensive denoising and cleaning, the footage would still feel like an intruder, detracting from the overall visual consistency. I made a deliberate choice to maintain a balance between picture quality consistency and restoring as much content as possible using the available footage.

Only just found this article and now looking forward to the new release. It’s another one of those occasions where I kick myself for not keeping my recordings after I got the DVDs.

There is a slight chance I have them somewhere but looking through my stuff it doesn’t seem likely.

They were recorded from digital TV sent to my PC via composite cables. It’s doubtful the picture would be better than your current source but the audio was recorded as 48khz stereo/pro-logic. A small chance that may be better. If I do find it I’ll get in touch so you can check my source if you would like to.

I would very much like to check your source. In case you manage to retrieve them, you can PM me and we can take it from there. Many thanks.

While I previously announced that the latest release would mark the conclusion of this restoration endeavor, recent developments have inspired me to take this project to even greater heights. Armed with the necessary resources, I’ve decided to dedicate additional time and effort to create an ultimate “Final” Definitive Version of the “Star Wars: Clone Wars” micro-series, faithfully restored to its original broadcast and episodic format.

You might wonder why another release is necessary. Well, thanks to the invaluable contribution of a preservation hero and member of our OT community, “pufnstuf,” I have obtained the highest-quality TV broadcasts of the show. These recordings, captured on D8 tapes using a Sony DCR-TRV120 Camcorder, offer unparalleled fidelity and nearly match the audio quality of the DVD disc tracks.

Currently, I’m diligently addressing a few dropouts in the recordings through spectral repair to ensure a seamless viewing experience.

As usual, the project’s status has reverted to WORK IN PROGRESS, and downloads will be temporarily unavailable until further notice. However, rest assured that once the re-release is ready, users who have been granted access to the content will find the download link unchanged.

Stay tuned for updates and prepare to experience the “Star Wars: Clone Wars” micro-series the way they were originally intended to be.

The 4:3 aspect in which the show was originally broadcasted and streamed was done via letterboxing - the full picture, but with black boxes at the top / bottom. It would be the same exact framing, but zoomed out basically.

Either way, I decided to stick with the 16:9 proper widescreen as it is on DVD/D+.

The edit retains the 25 FPS rate exactly as it is on the PAL DVD. Nothing was touched from that perspective.

However, I am working on a definitive version for this restoration. This upcoming release will use a high bitrate AVC encoding transferred to NTSC / 23.976 and a lot more fixes / additions to preserve the episodic broadcast format.

I cannot make up my mind if I should go on a 4:3 aspect ratio (the aspect format from Hyperspace.com / CN / Toonami) or stick with 16:9.
