Cinderella (1950) 35mm Preservation opportunity! (a WIP)
Time

We have the opportunity to borrow and scan a Cinderella IB Technicolor print in the US. The cost of scanning this is $370. Total scanning costs are about $600. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you guys that’s a bargain, we don’t have to purchase, rent, or even ship the print.

And, the print is in EXCELLENT CONDITION. Probably better condition than my print. And, unlike mine, it can be scanned as soon as NEXT WEEK!

As some of you know I have a print as well and it can be scanned in the future. But this is a limited opportunity to get a print that’s in top condition scanned, and that may end up making scanning mine (which will cost more) unnecessary.

And more great news, after this is scanned we can rent Lady and the Tramp from the same source for scanning. And after that is scanned we can rent Sleeping Beauty too. And more!

Begin your pledges/donations, please!

Current list of generous donors:

  • ahughes03
  • Soupdrinker0

  • hombredesilla
  • Warstorck
  • FrankB
  • freedomland
  • MWilson

Donations so far: $550 / 600

An exclusive early release will be made available to donors, hopefully followed by a wider “myspleen” release at some point later this year/early next year.

Short test scan done on the first couple of minutes of Reel 1:

It’s heavily compressed, but hopefully shows the condition the print is in. Remember that heads and tails of reels are where most of the wear usually is.

Screenshots:

Cinderella is a two-phase project. Only donors will be given access to the phase 1 release.

Phase 1:

  • The borrowed print will be scanned.
  • Early access release will be made available exclusively to donors.

Phase 2:

  • My print will be scanned.
  • Wider release on Myspleen.

I’d like to be a donor for this project in phase one and two. It would be a great opportunity to check the amazing quality of the scan.

Cinderella (1950) & Pinocchio (1940) 35mm Preservation opportunity (a WIP)

Hi guys! As many of you know I borrowed and scanned an IB Tech Cinderella print last year (here). I have now moved to phase 2 of that project (with a release of the borrowed print forthcoming to all donors within a few weeks). I have sent my print (also IB Tech) to be scanned, and it is to be done professionally at full 4K triple-flashed. I have so far a handful of sample frames, here’s one (full 4K):

I also have another project. Brace yourselves. Pinocchio - 1940 from two IB Tech prints. One is complete in very good condition, the other is dying from VS and only some reels can be scanned.

I’m already very overdue on one payment of ~$220 and I feel really bad about it so any help would be very much appreciated. All donors will receive early previews to all scanned reels. You will also get the early full quality exclusive release of Cinderella from “Print 1” (also a very good print I must say) that I plan to have ready by the end of this month.

Here is Reel 1 of Cinderella from the “borrowed print”. This is not full quality, just a preview encode:

Current total: $290

Good evening sir. How goes the project so far? I would love to help donate or fund the remainder of the project. I’d be excited when the project is finished.

Rob's Nostalgia Projects 35mm/16mm Movie Scans Project

From late 2021, to the end of 2024 when the project was completed, I crowdfunded over 70 16mm & 35mm movie print scans, and over 150 35mm trailers, and the same again in Snipes. This involved renting and buying prints from collectors, and getting them scanned. The Scanner uses professional equipment to scan each frame on each reel to a 4K/5K digital image, and each reels’ optical audio strip to a digital sound file. I grade and encode this transfer to give a 1080p 24fps digital recreation of each source print.

For more information, please see the full 35mm scans project page. You can see the full list of features which were restored/released below;

I did give the standard crowdfunding model a good try for my first three 35mm print scans, on two forums and through my Facebook page. Back in November 2021, The Evil Dead (1983), was waiting for five months and only managed to raise 60% of the total $700 rental/scanning costs and I paid the rest myself. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) only raised 48% of the $582 in donations in August 2022, and in September 2021 Dawn Of The Dead (1978) raised 25% of $750. Crowdfunding is very tough going for anything other than the biggest & most popular titles.

Late in 2022, I decided to try a different crowdfunding model. I collected together interested people on to a mailing list, then every three months I asked everyone for a set donation, in return for a fixed set of 5-6 35mm ferature scans (plus cinema snipes & trailers) as proper playable Blu-Ray discs.

Up to the final round in October 2024, this project had a very good run. It’s funded fifty-eight 35mm & five 16mm feature scans which I’ve done myself, plus partially funding (usually 50%) another 14 scans done by other people, along with funding the scans of over 150 35mm trailers and the same again of bumpers/snipes too.

Releasing open-matte 35mm scans with the original grade & audio to fans is a worthwhile end in itself, but there’s also a handful of features which go beyond that. The Duel - TV Cut (1971) for instance doesn’t have an official Blu-Ray or 4K release as of writing, nor does Bad Taste (1987) or The Bunker (2001), plus my Rituals (1977) 35mm scan is one of the couple that are actually higher in quality than the current-best retail Blu-Ray.

35mm print scanning is an expensive & time consuming business. It costs a minimum of $600/£510, ranging past $1000+/£840+ per feature depending on length, and around $45/£38 per trailer, to rent & scan in 4K or 5K resolution, and even that is fans’ mates rates. The quality of the print, or popularity of the film doesn’t come in to it.

The most expensive title to release was The Exorcist (1973), costing $1244 in rental & scanning; which required the compositing of two prints to make an almost complete version. Next would be Bad Taste (1987) at $1122, which was a print I bought outright in order to scan.

I didn’t know this existed but I would like to support any project that may come along in the future. I remember my little sister watching this movie non stop and I would love to see a proper preservation

I totally agree, would it be great if we could do a crowdfund or a project so i can donate you the money if you have the 35mm copy with you? This movie is special because its underrated and one of the animation’s best family films. I can see why only few people own a physical 35mm filmstrip copy.

Do you have the uncompressed lossless file for this?

I used the Italian Preview 35mm scan of Beauty and the Beast. I cut all the bad parts, for example end of part 1. I stabilized the picture, I crop and I change 4 pixels… I modify the speed at 23.976 (Colorspace YUV). I didn’t use AI because I prefer the oldschool way and I put the English Laserdisc PCM audio (48KHZ, 16 bits and 1536kb/s), I’m not a fan of bad AAC… I uploaded all the songs =>

Belle Part 1

https://youtu.be/oh27HkzamRw

Belle Part 2

https://youtu.be/Pf7B7B9rCcI

Belle (Reprise)

https://youtu.be/Y9WiHiXkaCw

Be Our Guest

Beauty and the Beast

Gaston

https://youtu.be/dtI2dOAfNzg

Something There

https://youtu.be/N4qdtkzH1d8

The Mob Song

https://youtu.be/mmlrTK0mt3k

I did the French version (Laserdisc with the First French Dub from 1992 but only for 3 songs and not the entire movie). But I upload the raw version without upscale in 4K60. You will see with the native resolution

Belle (Part 1)

https://youtu.be/jsVfp36hDRw

C’est la fête (Be Our Guest)

https://youtu.be/VI5DugVxmxU

Histoire éternelle (Beauty and the Beast)

https://youtu.be/eDKQfR6LPrc

I didn’t even upscale. I touch nothing about the resolution, thats why the file is 1808 pixels (Width) and 1024 pixels (Height). After, it is easy to upscale in FULL HD or 4K but it will be heavier for nothing. Once I had The Lion King, that I crop and it was only 8GB and when I wanted to upscale in 1080p without lossing quality, it was 20GB…

The original preview was in 1850/1050 in 24FPS. My work is over since the 24th August 2024. But it was in 6 parts and I was lazzy to do only 1 part but I did that in 2 minutes.

Since 1 week I saw a fake The Great Mouse Detective 35mm Italian Scan… And a fake Disney logo as well… https://youtu.be/xv-XZAk6g6k

Anyone especially Italians that faked it , created a hoax online don’t deserve to be in a free society and burn in hell. Truth will win.

Have the following LDs:

Alice In Wonderland 1986 CLV
Aladdin CAV
Aladdin King of Thieves
Aladdin Return of Jafar
Bambi 1990 CLV
Beauty and the Beast CAV
Beauty and the Beast Workprint CAV
Cinderella CAV Boxset
Dumbo 1982 CLV
Hercules CAV
Lady and the Tramp THX CAV
Oliver and Company CAV
Peter Pan 1990 CAV
Pinocchio 1987 CAV
Robinhood 1990 CLV
Sleeping Beauty 1997 CAV
Snow White 1994 CAV
Great Mouse Detective CAV
The Huncback CAV Box Set
The Junglebook 30th Anniversary CLV
The Many Adventures of Winnie The Pooh 1996 CLV
The Rescuers CAV
The Rescuers Down Under CAV
Sword in the Stone Masterpiece CAV
The Three Caballeros Masterpiece CAV
Toy Story Widescreen CLV

Some thoughts:

-The Sleeping Beauty and Bambi Blurays look better than the LDs
-The CAPs films look so much different on LD than Bluray in terms of colors and shading, I much prefer the LD look
-The Junglebook and Sword In The Stone are some of the worst looking Blurays, the LDs are quite a revelation
-Mary Poppins (Archive Collection) LD looks a million times better than the Bluray, it’s amazing how badly botched that Bluray is (the Bluray is dark and overly contrasty at the same time, and the scenes that use projection look way more fake due to this)
-1987 Pinocchio CAV is really bad looking and washed out, will have to capture the CAV Box Set instead

Doctor M, your hypothesis about “thinned” lines not being some kind of digital artifact is interesting.

I can’t find the site/forum, but I remember someone complaining that there was DVNR artifacting in the Vista Series DVD of Roger Rabbit. The lines indeed look thin and wispy, but the Blu-ray and the French HDTV broadcast seem to have the same line characteristics.

I’m betting that RR had hair-thin inking to begin with, so the characters would better blend into the live action - the cels I’ve seen seem to bear that out.

Also, does anybody else think the “Mystery in the Mist” transfer of The Great Mouse Detective looks a tad TOO warm? I won’t argue that it’s a better transfer than the old DVD, but there’s an original 35mm print from 1986 on eBay, and the blues actually look blue. (Or is that just due to the white balance on the digital camera capturing the projection?)

Sure, you’d expect some cropping.  But my point is that the anamorphic and wide releases of Jungle Book actually have more left/right information than the 4x3 releases.

If the 4x3 version is all the animation fit to be seen, the widescreen should ONLY be less on the top and bottom.

Not necessarily. If you are framing at a particular AR, if you show more on the sides then you have to show more on the top and bottom. So a 4x3 transfer were to show as much on the sides as the widescreen ones, it would necessitate opening up the image that much more on the top and bottom, potentially revealing stuff we weren’t intended to see (refer to the misframed Fox and the Hound Blu-ray screenshot, and the Great Mouse Detective framegrab from that recent 35mm auction).

And remember that in general, one framing has to be chosen for the entire transfer, or at least each reel, so if they are paying attention to the cel cutoffs and such, they would pick a framing that hides them in every shot. If one shot has an abrupt cel end at a certain frame height, the entire transfer has to be framed to cut off before that height, and so an equal amount of picture has to be sacrificed on the sides.

On the other hand, since a widescreen transfer mattes more on the top and bottom, they can afford to show more on the sides without revealing frame cheats on the top or bottom. This is all ideal circumstances, of course - if the technicians frame it too tight, we can get something like the 2002 Great Mouse Detective transfer where its 1.66:1 ratio cropped more on the sides than it opened up on the top and bottom.

We’ve seen plenty of transfers which are the “correct” AR but still a bit too tight (the Blu-ray of Alien, every transfer of Jurassic Park in the last 10+ years). And we’ve seen ones which are not properly centered as well (that Fox and the Hound Blu-ray, the original pressings of the Back to the Future Part II DVD where the entire transfer was framed too high). Transfer framing seems to be more of an art than a science.

A transfer showing all possible information without ever showing any of the garbage on the edges in any scene wouldn’t necessarily be 4x3. It would probably end up being some oddball ratio (since there is usually more “garbage” on the top and bottom than on the sides). And if each individual shot were framed to show the maximum information without revealing flaws and cheats, the ratio would likely change from scene to scene.

As you can see, the whole frame is used. I’m willing to bet that the cels not going all the way to the edge of the frame is why the full screen transfers were tighter. This is why a lot of 1.37 animated films aren’t completely open-matte.

My point was that An American Tail is open-matte, but that the widescreen has almost no extra picture on the sides, and I don’t know why.

We have the opportunity to scan Jungle Book. From three IB Technicolor prints (two in English). Some work has already been done on the first print, here is a video preview of Reel 2:

Password: jbpreview

As you can see, this print is in excellent overall condition with very few lines or scratches, and it is very clean. It does however have some splices, and we will need to scan the second print to do a proper restoration. The total scanning costs are around $900 (that does not cover rental, postage, or hard drive space), although I have already covered some of that as well as received some private donations. The main print we’re working from will be available for a while, however the second print is a limited opportunity. I would like to be able to scan it as well, but currently don’t have the funds to do it. If you’re interested in donating to the cause, please send me a message!

Also, we will shortly have limited access to the Sleeping Beauty and Lady and the Tramp prints as well!

Thanks!

That’s a great scan.
Can anyone online dm me if you have the full length digitized 35mm scan of the great mouse detective and oliver and company also made by Disney? They never used these versions on all home video releases.
