The Darth Vader theme
Time
With all of the changes made to the original trilogy from FX to even dialog for the special editions, I noticed something missed.
I was just listing to the soundtrack to New Hope, and wondered why Lucas didn't have John Williams add the Vader theme to this score. It's in every other episode. All through Empire, his death scene, even when Anikin is a kid before he is vader, etc, ---but not in New Hope

Did Lucas miss this, or was there another personality or ego just as big as his that couldn't be tampered with?

I'm thrilled it's not there, because the score is great as it is. It just doesn't seem consistent with all of the other garbage fine-tuning changes that were made throughout the original trilogy.

George Lucas calls Spiderman 3 'silly'

I posted this on the Superman board but it was worth cross-posting over here.
Lucas needed to help script-polish Spidey 3. That way when Peter is dumping all that sand out of his boot after his first fight with Sandman, he could say something compelling like "I hate sand. It's rough, and course. And it gets in everything." Then cut to Peter's proposal-date where he says to MJ ... "Unlike here. Where everything is soft. And smooth. I love you Mary Jane Watson. You are in my very soul, tormenting me."

Then when MJ says "I can't believe you shared our kiss with her" have Peter reply with something really deep and moving. Like, "I'm haunted by the kiss that I shouldn't have given. I hope that it doesn't turn into a scar."

Add in some important expository scenes with Venom where he says, "How can you take pictures for the bugle and NOT have a staff position? It's insulting. And Jameson is worse ... he's overly critical ..." *throw an empty film canister* "In most ways ... I'm actually better than Peter Parker. It's all Peter's fault. He's holding me back!!! AND I HATE HIM!!!!!" *quivering lip*

Add in a few floating robots in the background for no reason whatsoever and it won't be so silly.

That's great. I'd post it at TheForce.Net for all those kool-aid drinking sheep, but I'm banned.

Do the Jedi steal children?
Time
Here's a theory I have. Take it or not.
First, it seemed to me the Jedi child thing was based on a throw away line from Yoda in Empire. I took it from that as Yoda baiting Luke to try harder. The PT says I was wrong. So whatever.

Now even if it was intended from the begining by the great and powerful Lucas, then I see this whole Jedi taking children under their care as a sub conscience mirror to his own life as a father by adopting his kids.
George has made a saga that in affect says to kids --to his kids, --that the greatest, most trusted guardians of the galaxy are the ones who don't have natural parents raising them. And the only way to be great Jedi is if you're adopted by the Jedi, --or the Lucas,--then you too can change the ways of the simple minded.

And let's not forget that one of the kids had a cameo as a Jedi youngling.

What could have made the PT better?
Time
On the 'Duel' DVD commentary, Spielberg makes a very interesting comment that will always keep him head and shoulders above Lucas no mater how far he may miss the mark with his latest production.

He said that he knows that he could never make the film 'Duel' now as he did then. That he had to prove himself to the Universal suits and to himself. In his voice you can tell how amazed Spielberg is of what he did back then. And that he is a different person now and the internal fire and drive and the need to do 24 hour days is gone. But on that same note, back then in his beginning years when he was young, he would not of had the insight to attempt something like 'Schindlers List' or 'Private Ryan'.
Spielberg may also be out of touch at times , but at least he can be aware of who he is and his limitations.

Lucas still thinks he's doing and working the same way as he did with no clue how separated from the creative film making process he really is.

There may be something to that. There isn't a series of checks and balances in his world anymore, nor has there been for quite some time. That's not usually a good thing.

There is something to this, in just about every industry I must add. Look at people in the music industry and compare their newer to the stuff they recorded years ago. For example George Strait, his 80's stuff was, and is, the best example of country music there can ever be. Then fast forward to now when he is a confirmed multi-million dollar earner, sells out every show, and gets anything he wants. He walks into a studio, records crap, and 30 people tell him how great it is because they don't want him hearing any less. It would have been nice if Lucas would have walked into a boardroom full of writers and a top notch director and said "Alright, I want three prequels about the rise of the Empire, the relationship between Anakin and Obi-Wan, and the creation of Vader" Then he should have walked out and had nothing further to do with the project until he watched it on the night of the premier. I think if that would have happened, we would have had such a great story because all those writers would know the impact they would have, whereas, Lucas just looked at it as an opportunity to show off his super duper digital effects powerhouse.

What could have made the PT better?
Time
To get down to just the bare bones of the whole thing, for me, I would of just been happy if there were three well written characters that become good friends that continued through all the 3 films. I tend to watch movies over and over more of the ones with the characters that are fun to watch. I love the bickering friendship of Val and Earl in 'Tremors'. I don't care if the shark in 'Jaws' looks fake, I watch it for those guys on the boat. Or the layered characters in a Tarantino film. Then humor comes out of desperate situations from how well these characters know each other.
Who knew the 'Pirates' films would do so well, since in the past those type movies all failed. But you can tell this director is having a good time. And Johnny Depp is enjoying himself along with everyone else. Who cares what the story is about, audiences respond to the fun adventure ride these characters are on. Then after that, any story can support the characters no matter how lame and plot hole full.
Even in Georges own 'American Graffiti', the story can be summed up in one quick short sentence. But to explain the people and friendships that develop could take pages.
But when it comes to the PT, It's 'Master' this, or 'Padawan' that ,-over and over. Council meetings and Senate debates that seem to endlessly go on and on. Secret conversations, and duel identities. And it appears that none of the actors cares about whats going on or who they were with.

I think George has no clue on how to write a friendship because he has forgotten how to have one. He has surrounded himself by kiss-butts for too long. Nothing comes close in the PT as do the moments of when OBwan was guiding Luke. You can see the bond grow between them scene by scene, and they are only physically together in Star Wars for roughly 30 minutes of screen time.
But of coarse, George had much help and real friends developing the scripts back then.

Anyone else nostalgic to the PT?
Time
I too am nostalgic, but only for a specific moment of the PT.

After years of Lucas hype,-- months of ads and trailers, --days and nights of of the party in line, --counting down the minutes inside for the theater to go dark. I'm very nostalgic to that one moment during 'Phantom Menace' when the screen silently read "Along time ago in a galaxy far, far away..." and the audience exploded with cheers. WOW.

After such a innocent moment of hopes and dreams of all the possibility's ahead came to a slow realization that the magic was gone.

And even if george hadn't insulted the audience with Jar-Jar and metaclorine antics and delivered a great film, it would of been hard to match the anticipation that had been built up.
The 'having' isn't always as great as the 'wanting'.

Since then I don't get caught up in the pre-hype before film openings.
Now excuse me as I must get back in line for 'Transformers'.

Anyone else totally disregard Leia being Luke's sister?
Time
My 2 cents. Back in the day, the 3 years between Empire and Jedi were great. It was a constant debate of what was going to happen next and who was -'the other'. I don't remember ever thinking Leia could 'the other' , let alone --'sister'.
I held to the thought that Vader was lying to Luke to mess with his head. The Emperor and Vader talked of turning "the son of Skywalker". Anyway, Obi-wan wouldn't lie.
And going off of early production photos of Luke in the black outfit (especially ones showing Luke standing with Vader) had us guessing that a clone of a dark side Luke was 'the other'. That, or a brand new character not yet introduced would answer the big question, --- but not Leia. Vader would of coarse had sensed this when he had her on the Death Star. We kids knew that was just silly.

Also, a side note, I did feel strongly that when Lando looks over the buttons on Hans Carbon freeze unit, we were sure that he set a timer to free Han so he could escape Boba Fett.
What innocent times, and to think Lucas had no more clue of how to tie up the Trilogy then we did.

The Secret History of Star Wars
Time
WOW. What an insightful week this has been since just discovering this work. Christmas came twice this year.
Thank you Zombie84 for this. I just printed out all 400 pages and well worth it. I've always argued and defend these facts, but from many different and hard to find sources. This has placed them all together plus many new items I never knew.

This would be an inspiring teaching guide for new film makers and writers showing the process of creating. At least for the first half I was more inspired. Lucas was driven and wouldn't settle for less then the right idea for "The Star Wars". Finding that right blend of story and characters. Doing draft after draft. Involving many people for their opinions and starting over again. Early artists concepts turning the plot to new directions that he wasn't intending. More rewrites.
But the it all began to change.
Instead now, we have Lucas claiming he was a genius from the beginning and his condescending attitude that we all wish we were a genius's like him too.
It takes a bigger man to admit his faults rather then claiming his perfection.
