STAR WARS: EP IV 2004 <strong>REVISITED</strong> ADYWAN *<em>1080p HD VERSION NOW IN PRODUCTION</em>

Short video (link at the bottom) showing the sources that i used to recreate the original 1977 version of the scene in the image below, followed by the new HD recreation. The Special Edition droid never looked good IMHO and it’s something i always wanted to remove but didn’t have the skills to do it back when i created the SD version of ANH:R.

This one took a LOT of work and just over 3 weeks to complete. I had to combine the best elements of each source , with each one having its own problems. The 4K77 print scan had a lot of print damage that needed cleaning up by hand just so i could use small sections. The 2011 Blu-Ray had more details in parts than the new 2020 blu-ray edition but suffered with blurry faces of the characters in the background. While the 2020 blu-ray lost a lot of detailing in the brighter areas. So, to get this done, it was weeks of cleaning, stabilising, tracking, rotoscoping, grading and manually lining up and matching each source to overlay on top of each other to get the bets possible details out of the sources.

Youtube’s crappy compression really screws with the videos now. So here is a snapshot so you can see it in full quality (the grain hasn’t been added yet)

And, for those that want to see it in higher quality than on youtube, you can download the sample here:

https://mega.nz/file/SJlSURpY#66pcDlU0_HetxMg2s1KWKDkGqpld3aITbXeg4FgDKVU

That looks great, although I was wondering about something. About a month ago, I heard that TN1 was re-scanning their prints with a 2-pass HDR process, which they seem to have configured it properly on their Cintel. The results of that improved the shadow detail and removed additional noise. I’m wondering if you’re able to use the new scan data for Revisited.

Why is it when I make it explicitly clear that I’m talking hypothetically, I still get made to look like a complete idiot.

Hey Ady, I saw the post you made two days ago, and you never fail to amaze me with the amount of work being done. Although, I just wanted to ask something really quick.
If hypothetically the OT gets brand-new, proper 4K transfers of all three in their unaltered forms with the same kind of treatment and care found in releases like the 2021 Scream Factory 4K Release of Halloween (1978), or the most recent 2023 Disney 4K Release of Cinderella (1950), could the Revisited Trilogy look and sound just about the same?
However, please note that this is purely hypothetical. By the way, I’d like to leave this here; (I just hope that I don’t derail the topic of this thread) My take of remastering the existing 2020 UHD with a frame that isn’t DNR-scrubbed.

What source was used to create the ANH_REVISITED_SD_x264.mp4?

The DVD-9 source if Im not mistaking.

Yeh, it was the PAL DVD-9

I’m famous on here for being able to spot differences in screenshots. I’ve made it my actual hobby. I don’t know what you’re getting at by posting a link to two identical screenshots of the Fox logo save for some compression.

In comparison to the original “STAR_WARS_REVISITED_PAL_DVD_9,” “ANH_REVISITED_SD_x264” is desaturated in several portions such as the LFL logo, the long time ago text, the SW logo, the Tantive IV engines, and Yavin Prime.

These minor changes were made to TESB with the release of the 4K version. Do you think they’re necessary enough to be added to TESB:R when you make the Blu-Ray for it?

As of now, I highly doubt that Ady would return to ESB:R to redo the changes to form a native 1080p video, lossless audio, or to apply any more fixes to just anything, even if the changes that were made on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-Ray could’ve helped ESB:R.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he already fixed them himself, since the man is so good he can literally identify the most minute continuity errors.

That is literally the best way to describe Adywan, someone who is so dedicated to something cherished around the world, and even to himself.

This small topic possibly has popped up some time before, but I wanted to ask to be sure.
I’m assuming there will be no HDR pass on this, or any other Revisited Trilogy Edits?

Why do you care so much about the credits?

Well, the theatrical timing of the score was disrupted in the Special Edition, where a segment from the first part was repeated to make space for the team that worked on the special edition.

I’ve watched 4K77 kind-of recently, and that version made me really appreciate the film, how it was meant to be seen.
The credits is one example about how a natural flow through the film was interrupted by cgi, or continuity changes.

(Also; I think I should point this out. I’m still relatively new on this forum and the topics surrounding it, considering I’ve been here for just two years.)

Touching back on my End Credits, I had another idea.

https://youtu.be/sIPNormrPwg
Using this video as reference, why not for the first portion of the end credits, to play the score that goes from (0:00-2:18). Then right after, to insert the additional score to fit everyone who worked on, or had been involved in this film?

Besides Yub Nub, I believe most of the kid-friendly material should be removed or altered in some way.

While ESB:R and ANH:R SD & HD are mostly effects changes, this one should also be more of a fan edit.

God forbid Star Wars appeal to children.

I thought that Star Wars can be for everyone, no matter what age or gender you are. Are you saying it can’t be?

Although I don’t think it’s necessary, seeing Guiness’ “Anakin” from ROTJ dubbed in place over the “Darth” would be an interesting excercise for sure. The mouth would have to be animated a little extra

That would ruin the twist in TESB entirely.

Not only that, any more dialogue changes would probably not help ANH even further.

For the end credits, I have a suggestion.

On Disney+, after the main credits finish, there’s this sequence of additional credits (for the voices of the international dubs) without music, and with simple text. Why not take that concept and utilize that for the people that helped you out with Revisited?

(The reason I asked is, I wanted to see if it was possible to keep the original theatrical pacing of the end credits, without putting in additional music or repeated segments, while at the same time still being able to put the names of the supporters and additional help)

OK, Here is the sneak peek at the new ANH:R HD edit of the Obi-Wan/ Vader duel.
The editing in the HD version differs slightly from the SD version . In the final version there will be two audio tracks: The main 5.1 track will be the music less versions, while track 2 will have the added music as seen in the original SD version of ANH:R

https://youtu.be/HHmlOcakOPs

Right off the bat, the adjustments made to this sequence greatly improves upon the original. That being the color correction, the re-rotoscoping of the lightsabers, the jumpcut fix with Obi-Wan’s lightsaber, and the shuffling around of scenes to improve the pacing. It’s really impressive just seeing this in comparison to the 2020 Blu-Ray.

Although, I do have some questions about certain fixes/changes such as, the color correction being different from the regrade of the 2011 Blu-Ray from a while back, the lightsaber sound effects sourced from the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (2011 Blu-Ray) being swapped for sound effects from the 1977 Dolby Stereo Track, and the “Your powers are weak, old man.” and “You should not have come back.” lines switching places from the original.

Why’s that?

Actually the audio used is the 1997 SE theatrical 5.1 DTS throughout with only the dialogue for Vader using the 2011 DTS track because of the differences. Sound effects for the clashes have been added due to the editing. The mix for the 2011/2020 blu-rays is horrendous when compared to the 1997 5.1 DT theatrical. I’ve been noticing so many things missing from the blu-ray mixes; missing foley, sound effects coming from the wrong channels amongst other things. It also a very flat mix in places. So the final release audio track will be a combination of the 97 theatrical DTS & the 2001 blu-ray mix. The lines were swapped around in the original ANH:R, so i kept it that way. The old regrade i did was only ever going to used as a basis for this edit. This will have an updated grade

I see. Keep up the great work, Ady. “Impressive…”

I know I shouldn’t bring this up again but, I did just realize something. Since you’re using Topaz to improve the existing 2011 Blu-Ray for ANH:R HD, why not attempt the same for ESB:R?

He already did. ESB:R was originally made and released at 720p, but he used Topaz to upscale it to 1080p.

From my knowledge, I thought that Ady used the 2004 DVD Release of ESB for the Revisited Edit, not the 2011 Blu-Ray.

haha

Welp, I fooled myself again, I’m just so against upscaling.

That is if you want to do it, as it is your choice and not mine, or anyone else’s.

(In some of the shots where Leia turns around to rescue Luke from Cloud City, the lighted buttons in the Falcon’s cockpit bleeds together.)

Didn’t you just ask this?

Yeah I know, but when I was reading back the update on ANH:R HD about how Ady was using Topaz to clean-up the 2011 Blu-Ray (when it was still on native 1080p) to improve the image quality for the same resolution, I thought about that when I was thinking that Ady used the 2004 DVD to create ESB:R, before he used Topaz to upscale from 720p to 1080p.
