It does make me wonder how George would have wrote Vader and Anakin being the two separate characters in the films, and if and how he’d have used that ‘Vader, still pretending to be a Jedi, repeatedly lured the few remaining Jedi left, to their deaths’ idea.

A time machine, Keith Carradine as Annikin Starkiller, with Timothy Dalton as Darth Vader, and I’m all in for an alternative “what if?” OT universe based on those early drafts. Where the they and Obi-Wan Kenobi are good friends, yet Vader is also betraying them and the Jedi behind their backs! 😃

I would love to see this original story, an alternative Prequel Trilogy, even with a time machine! Or in animation, or even in a fan film. But I think my imagination will just have to do.

Back to the OP; certainly interesting to think how the story could have evolved with Vader, Anakin, and Kenobi being 3 completely separate characters, but also good friends.

Is there any fan fiction continuing on the premise in Leigh Brackett’s 1978 draft of Empire Strikes Back? Or similar media such as an “animated comic” type story?

I have not found any. I hope someone else knows of some as it is such an interesting idea.

There are some good fan stories and analysis of early drafts here: www.starwarz.com/starkiller/category/fan-creations

Rogue Zero - What was changed, reshot, etc in Rogue One?

I found the final script for Rogue One , here: https://www.screenwritersnetwork.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/doc.pdf

Did the original script for Rogue One leak online (the version where Jyn is a Sgt in the Rebellion, and the Rebels have to cross the beach against the ATATs to get to the transmitter tower, like we saw in the early trailers)?

Or is there a good fan recreation of the original script anywhere?

At what point did Tatooine robes become Jedi uniforms?

We see in the Prequels there are some subtle differences in the Jedi clothing, and that’s okay. Though quite why Dave Filoni (and Lucas himself?) thought why a 14 year old female Jedi, during the Clone Wars, would wear this as a Jedi uniform:

and not what we’d seen previously seen young Jedi wear as Jedi uniform in the Prequel era, is lost on me:

Yeah, it would have been cool to see those Jedi uniforms from the concept art and storyboards (and even some early toy figures?) for The Phantom Menace.

^ Marvel comic #24 (1979), 1990s Hugh Fleming art from Galaxy 2 series of Topps cards, Ralph Fiennes early concept art for TPM

^ 2000/02 “Power of the Jedi” toy figure line (based on early concept art of TPM for Qui-Gon & Obi-Wan Jedi uniforms) ?

I don’t have the Storyboard book for the Prequels, but these kind of “flip through” videos show the Jedi uniform:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nboI_fqx-sE & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALc77sA2pTQ

It would have been some new and interesting to see onscreen, rather than what we got in the Prequels:

I do like that Obi-Wan was at least wearing clothes many others were wearing on Tatooine, as some sort of blending in with the locals (or similar clothing as others on poorer or outback worlds), even if he didn’t go to that much trouble in changing his name too much!

The Star Wars – Rough Draft” script from 1974 is an interesting read too, and certainly worth it for seeing Vader and Luke’s father being those entirely two different characters.

JW Rinzler was so taken with it he eventually persuaded George to give him the okay to do an official comic book version of it, released in 2014, as “The Star Wars”.

The official trailer for it is a cool watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0uTm-4XZQU

Announcement from Dark Horse comics: www.darkhorse.com/Blog/1349/lucasfilm-and-dark-horse-announce-star-wars

“The Star Wars-Taking a Look at the Comic Adaptation of George Lucas’s Original Script”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pmNOOk5-TDg is an 18 minute video overview for the 8 part comics book series.

It is also cool to see Vader “character” essentially being 4 separate characters at this stage, before being eventually merged, blended, and revised, with traits and attributes belonging to Prince Valorum, Kane Starkiller, Annikin Starkiller, and possibly others (Darklighter is a Jedi who betrays the order to go join the Sith - introduced as a storyline in the next draft), to become the more familiar character of Vader that we see in the films.

Then a lot of scenes in ROTJ would need changing from a redemption arc to a forgiveness one.

There would probably be a whole Disney+ series with much fan service flashbacks just for that! 😉

C-3PO’s head, ‘Titanic’ costumes for sale at Propstore film auction - at Reuters

'More than 1,800 items are being sold by entertainment memorabilia auctioneer Propstore at its annual live auction, which this year runs from Nov. 9-12.

Leading the sale, which Propstore estimates will fetch more than 12 million pounds (14.6 million), is the light-up head actor Anthony Daniels wore to play C-3PO in “Star Wars: A New Hope”, with an estimate of 500,000 - 1 million pounds ($600,000- $1.2 million).

Daniels is also selling other “Star Wars” memorabilia.

“We have his complete archive from his time of working on the ‘Star Wars’ films so that includes some of the props and body components and parts, his head, his hands, his feet,” Propstore founder and Chief Executive Stephen Lane told Reuters.

“We have his original scripts with the annotations in there as well.”

Costumes for sale include a shirt, waistcoat and trousers DiCaprio wore in “Titanic” (100,000 - 200,000 pounds), Honey Ryder’s bathrobe as worn by Ursula Andress in “Dr. No” (70,000-140,000 pounds) and Johnny Depp’s stunt costume from “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” (50,000-100,000 pounds).

Props include Harrison Ford’s bull whip from “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (100,000-200,000 pounds), “Nightmare on Elm Street” character Freddy Krueger’s hero metal glove armature and hand-drawn schematic (200,000-400,000 pounds) and Tom Hanks’ sneakers from “Forrest Gump” (15,000-30,000 pounds).

Other lots include Stanley Kubrick’s hand-annotated shooting script for “The Shining” (30,000-60,000 pounds) and a coat worn by Marlon Brando in “The Godfather” (25,000-50,000 pounds).

Lane said the lots came from collectors, curators, archives, film studios and production companies.

“The demand is growing and we’re seeing things travel all over the world…and they’re bought by passionate fans and lovers of the movies, collectors,” he said. “But some of these items also end up in museums and studio archives as well.”’

That runtime has dashed all hopes that it can resolve all of the plotlines it’s introduced. Like I didn’t expect them to defeat Thrawn, but I thought there might be some battle between them. It’s definitely setting up for another season or Filoni’s movie. I hope I’m wrong and it does manage to have a satisfactory resolution while setting up for more stuff, but 49 minutes doesn’t seem like enough time.

With the recap, end credit sequence, and then credits, I agree. That is a pity. 8 episodes of a setup to move everyone into place for a 2nd season or the film, does seem a bit much.

As you posted above, 5-6 episodes would maybe have given the series better or more consistent pacing?

Star Wars – One Last Time VHS 1995 Trailer (HD Restoration)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKr5R1VNPjI

I can’t find the actual post on here, but it highlighted what I also thought about that “One Last Time” video, back in 1995:

That it was Lucas being coy or clever about the VHS format itself, with the new much talked about and anticipated DVD format was on the horizon, and DVD would the format that the Star Wars trilogy was going to be released onwards. At this time Lucas was still revered as a genius, innovator, a pioneer, and would surely embrace the new exciting technology. To take those recent THX audio and video improvements and put them onto the new digital home format. It was the obvious sure thing to do. Or it seemed that way.

Instead, we had to wait what seemed like an eternity, until 2004, for the OT to be on DVD. That 2004 release was a rushed botch job. “Deliberate creative decisions” excuses to hide basic audio errors, a faulty disc, and that horrible blue shift to it. Also with even more Special Edition changes.

Some trailers for the DVD format at the time (mainly from 1996):

What bothers me most about the show is the fact that it is something made strictly for those who watched Rebels.

The problem is that they had stated MULTIPLE times before the series aired that it was basically Rebels, Season 5. Watching Rebels beforehand is a requirement to understand what is happening in the show.

So it is kind of funny to me that people complain about that as a weak point for the show, the solution is easy… watch Rebels first. This show is a SEQUEL. Are you going to watch Jedi before Empire? Or Last Jedi before Force Awakens?

The problem there is Dave Filoni came out on several occasions whilst promoting Ahsoka and said the viewer didn’t need to watch previous content like The Clone Wars, Rebels or The Mandalorian to be able to watch or understand the Ahsoka series:

Dave Filoni Says You Don’t Have to Watch THE CLONE WARS to Understand AHSOKA - at Geek Tyrant

Ahsoka Creator Reveals If Star Wars Rebels Is Essential Viewing - at CBR

^ 'Filoni, who co-created the Ahsoka Tano character with Star Wars creator George Lucas, confirmed that Ahsoka won’t assume that audiences are familiar with Rebels in an interview with Collider. “I don’t think you would need to watch any [episodes of Rebels],” he said. “They’re all available on Disney+, so you can check them out there and that would be great, but… for me, if you really were interested in [Rebels] and if it got people that maybe don’t – aren’t as interested in animation into it, I would start [with], probably, like, maybe the episode, “Jedi Night,” where the sad thing happens to Kanan. Even if you didn’t understand what that was, it would propel you forward. If you just watch Season 4 [of Rebels], you’d be set [for Ahsoka].”

So “no”, Filoni stated the viewer didn’t need to watch previously released content.

From the 1st video from IGN, where Dave Filoni says: “I think it is important you can watch them of their own”.

NFBisms excellent post above also highlights some of the problems watching this series even despite being familiar with the previous content.

I enjoyed Chapter 6 as it moved the story onwards instead of attempting to do some sort of attempted character arc or “fix”. A little jarring that Sabine found Ezra so quickly, just a few hours away from where she was released?

The night sister dark magic likely keeping the “Night Troopers” alive was interesting, it would appear they have been through a lot, and lost many troopers during their time in this galaxy. I hope they do something worthwhile with this, not it is not just a gimmick without any worthy story or substance. No droids or Imperial officers left on the Chimaera was also noticeable.

Even with Thrawn finally appearing on screen I was more interested in Baylon and Shin. It would seem we are still getting Rebels character Thrawn and not so much Zahn’s Thrawn. I hope that will change in the next two episodes to be more of the EU character, or at least a half/half version of him. I did get a blue Elon Musk feel from him, and have seen a few others pick up on that too!

The turtle species (Noti?) were very “Ewok”, and I am okay with that. Maybe their clothing was little too clean and new for a species living on a desolate wasteland (new costumes, like the brand new look of the inside of the old Ghost and Ahsoka’s old ship? 😃) I am actually looking forward to the next episode, especially if the story is now moving forward again.

Highest quality version of 1997 Special Editions? Is there a DVD release?

It is a little strange that there are many fan preservation projects for the 1997 Special Editions:

And a range of bootleg DVDs for the 1997 Special Editions, even in the late 1990s and 2000s:

Episode 3 spoilers:

I don’t get why they riffed on the Original Trilogy here, other than it being a homage of sorts? The training section and rear gunner battle; couldn’t they have done some thing new or fresh instead? The dialogue of “I can’t see” and “I got one!” just fell flat and was cheap fan service to me. I was pleased to Mon Mothma, but a little disappointed with the little they gave Genevieve O’Reilly to work with. I agree with RogueLeader, it appears we are simply going to get years of the New Republic being incompetent with very little nuance. 2 people with Jedi powers and lightsabers just scuttled a Rebel transport, killing many of the crew, freed an important prisoner, but Senators claim Hera just wants to use Rebel resources to find Ezra? The whole reasoning and writing of this makes little sense or logic.

The Ahsoka somersault flightsuit fight was cool and silly in equal measures, although lucky the spaceships didn’t aim for the other wing, or the underside, where there isn’t a Jedi with lightsabers that can deflect these bolts away from the disabled ship. Sabine and Huyang were the more interesting characters in this again, along with Baylon and Shin. I enjoyed this more than the opening episodes, a little short, and still nothing unexpected from Filoni yet. The visual design does look for this series.

I was surprised to see it is only getting around the same viewership as Andor, as this had a lot more promotion, and Andor’s viewership increased as the series went on. I hope this does too, and improves along the way.

Episode 4 spoilers:

That is some weird de ageing of Christensen, or is that how people are going to look like in the live action World Between Worlds? I do wonder what anyone who hasn’t seen Rebels, and doesn’t know of the WBW, thinks is going on right now. The Vader music added on at the end seemed off and redundant.

It was an okay episode overall but it does struggle with pacing or direction like the the episodes. Some otherwise great scenes, but entwined with “action scene, then stop, look into distance and ponder, then a line or two line of dialogue delivered slowly, or learn something or try to say something profound; then more action scene, stop, look and ponder, a line or two of dialogue delivered slowly, learn something or try to say something profound” running through it. It feels “cluncky”, especially the slowly delivered dialogue.

Ahsoka’s “can I trust you?” to Sabine, out of nowhere early on, was a little clumsily done so that some raised red flags. I did very much like the fight with Sabine and Shin, the force power move, Sabine acknowledging her Mandalorian side! Baylon too was engaging again as he has been throughout the 4 episodes. Poor Marrok, just another disposable 2D henchman. Poor Hera too, and that hyperdrive scene was visually cool.

I think I’m watching this each week out of curiosity, rather than enjoyment, or it being a good series. There are parts which are of quality: the villains, action sequences in the main, visual and sound design. But they entwined with some middling and poor background characters, and their decision making, staid acting choices and odd dialogue from the main characters (Baylon apart), the political aspects of the New Republic and their 2D incompetence (see RogueLeader’s post), and the direction.

It is as if the show needed another polish, some further retuning before they started filming, but ran of time. So here we are. A pity, as there is a good series hiding away in here somewhere. Maybe the last half of this series will deliver?

Yeah, that magical awe vanished when the Prequels came out. Like so many other have commented on over time, GL suffers from not having those talents and creatives around him to challenge him, say no to him, offer alternatives, bring their insights to the fore and so on. To go back and continue needlessly altering that work is a stain on what they all achieved together.

Lucas’ content since the mid 1990s hasn’t been engaging and lacked that magic “he” once had. So he may as well have handed over the reigns to someone else and do whatever it is he is doing now, whatever that is I do hope it makes him happy. The Disney era of SW has been a very mixed bag, but I’ll happily take R1, Solo, Andor, Visions, and even TFA & TLJ. Even though I’d probably only re-watch R1, Andor and Visions.

Yourself?

I wasn’t a fan of Rogue One, it was okay, although it has grown on me a lot since Andor. I appreciated the effort of it, the 70s style, but didn’t work for me. A 6/10. I do enjoy Visions, but most of the releases since 2012 have been hit and miss. I agree with you on Lucas, and the new streaming services are a license for fun of the mill average series every year. I wish it wasn’t sold to Disney, but very much doubt we would have got any better under George. Glad he sold up, took the money, and didn’t do his latest known version of the Sequels.
