My suggestion to Disney: noir crime series in Coruscant underworld

Dr. Krogshöj - oojason’s post in Tobar’s Star Wars: Underworld (Live Action Series) thread could be right up your street; not only is there now a 10 minute behind the scenes video of footage from the ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ live action tv series, but also a downloadable batch of documents on the show too 😃

Quite interesting and some excellent ideas there (e.g. aging clones being phased out), but way too much tie-ins to the main OT story/characters. The show I would pitch would definitely not have Vader, Palpatine, Han, Chewie and Lando in it. Star Wars desperately needs to stop going back to the same very narrow set of people and things.

My suggestion to Disney: noir crime series in Coruscant underworld
Time

So I’m watching The Clone Wars series for the first time, because The Mandalorian and Fallen Order piqued my interest in things like the Death Watch and the Nightsister of Dathomir. And I came upon an episode titled “Lightsaber Lost”. It’s a very atmospheric episode set in the lower levels of Coruscant, featuring some unsavory characters.

Now, judging by The Mandalorian, the Star Wars universe is apparently suitable to tell simple, traditional genre stories (like Spaghetti Westerns) with only loose ties to the main saga’s themes. So how about this?

A noir style crime series set in the dark underbelly of Coruscant. The main character is a character is basically Miller from The Expanse. In fact, cast the guy who played him. He solves cases week by week but there is an overarching case for the entire season.

It’s set during the Empire era, because we never really saw Coruscant during that time and now you have the protagonist working for the Empire (vibes of Fatherland by Robert Harris).

The Last Jedi: Rekindled (Released) (V3 UPDATE!)

I think the radio scene works well as it is. But how about “At last… Find me” for Palpatine’s line? It would imply two things in my mind:

  1. At last, Kylo has killed “Snoke” and thus fully committed to the dark side.
  2. At last, Skywalker is dead. “Snoke” spend two movies being really into finding and killing Luke, taking revenge for the end of ROTJ. Now he’s finally out of the picture, and there’s no more need of the Snoke charade, the final phase of his plan can be kicked into action.

Fun fact regarding force powers:
There has not been a single episode, which has not introduced or teased a new force ability in some way or another.

Help: looking for... a TLJ edit with... Finn's suicide run removed entirely?
Time

… Finn’s suicide run removed entirely? I was doing a Star Wars podcast the other day and we discussed Rian Johnson’s apparent obsession with suicide attacks. Holdo’s is key to the plot so it cannot be taken out. But Finn’s might be, although it doesn’t seem easy. Hence the question: has anyone done it? Sorry for starting a new thread for this.

The Sequel Trilogy: Trilogized (a Work In Progress)
Time

I have an idea for the scene when Kyloe meets Palpatine, which, in your version, happens at the end of TLJ. I wouldn’t have the whole scene here, just one line from Palpatine: “At last” and one or two frames showing his face in the shadow. Then Kylo points his lightsaber at him, implying he wants to kill him. The rest of the scene would stay in TROS.

I feel that seeing the Sith fleet rise right after Luke restores the spark of hope in the galaxy would negate his heroics to soon after his sacrifice. The suggested version would mirror the original ending of TFA with Rey finding Luke but their actual exchange happening in the next film. (I know you want to change that, but I like the original ending of TFA.)

Another suggestion: keep Snoke being a Palpatine creation and the shot of his Snoke clone bodies. Snoke’s biggest motivation in TFA and TLJ was finding and killing Luke Skywalker. That makes sense if Snoke is Palpatine: he wants to take revenge on the man that killed him and took down his Empire. And than springing into action the last phase of his grand plan when Luke does die and the final obstacle for his Imperial restoration is cleared.

I watched TROS again today and I am confident Rey Palpatine cannot be taken out convincingly. Any thought of some foreshadowing of her origin during hee Takodana force vision?

I’m quite certain it can.

Okay, I gave it another look. Let’s put it this way. I’m sure some guys here could make it happen, but it might create such big gaps in several scenes that I personally consider too drastic. I don’t like drastic omissions in fan edits generally, I’m a fan of subtle, elegant changes that create big impact with small but well thought-out changes. So it’s more of a preference really.

There was a storyline in the pre-shoot version of the film about the Sith fleet, according the the leaker who later proved to be 100% accurate. Apparently, Generals Hux and Pryde were tasked with rounding up children in large numbers to train and staff Palpatine’s armada. Later on Kojimi, we would have seen Palpatine’s orders carried out as children weree being rounded up by soldiers of the First Order.

It’s a shame it got cut for two reasons:

  1. You need hundreds of thousands of people to crew the fleet we see on screen. I was asking myself in the theatre: who mans these ships? The fleet’s existence can be easily explained away (Palpatine hid it away during the height of the Empire, they are all Imperial era Star Destroyers, not First Order ones).

  2. The control tower subplot now makes sense. If the Sith fleet is manned, why exactly cannot they leave Exegol? I never understood that. But if these ships are uncrewed, you would actually need some kind of remote device to manouvre them.

Let’s hope for some pre-reshoot deleted scenes…

I think the crawl does not need to mention Palpatine by name at all. Because it makes the reveal not surprising whatsoever. I think it could go something like this:

After Luke’s heroic stand against the First Order, hope began returning to the galaxy and the First Order has expended a lot of resources trying to maintain fear and quell the growing resistance.

Something something about the Resistance.

As the First Order becomes desperate to find a solution to their growing problem, Kylo Ren uses one of Snoke’s old artifacts to find the source of his mysterious power.

I think a crawl in the vein of this could help justify where all of those ships came from at the end.

STAR WARS

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

The galaxy’s fate hangs in the balance.
Luke Skywalker’s heroic stand on Crait
has inspired countless worlds to stand
up for freedom and push back against
the tyrannical First Order.

To keep the Jedi alive in the wake of
Luke’s sacrifice, young Rey is trying
to contact the spirits of past masters
as she continues her training under
the guidance of General Leia Organa.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader Kylo Ren
is seeking clues to the mysterious power
of his former master Snoke so he can
turn the tide of war and erase the
echos of the past once and for all…

This is beautiful! I love it.

Thanks! Have fun with it. This is sort of a firt draft I blurted out because I was angry at JJ for throwing everything The Last Jedi established out of the window. To be fair, Rian did the same to him, but at least he did it because there was something he wanted to tell. JJ just did it to appease.

On balance, I think I might prefer the approach of retro-editing TFA and TLJ that foreshadow Palpatine in a subtle way and without ruining those films, like the concept laid out by Shadester9 in the The Sequel Trilogy: Trilogized thread. And, of corse, erasing Rey Palpatine if at all possible.

Here’s my take, a little less wordy but trying to make the same point as yours.

STAR WARS

Episode IX
THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

Luke Skywalker’s heroic
act has inspired countless
worlds to stand up against
the diabolical FIRST ORDER.

REY, under the guidance of
General Leia Organa, continues
her Jedi training, hoping to
find a way to communicate
with Jedi of the past.

Meanwhile, Supreme Leader
KYLO REN seeks the mysterious
power of his former master,
determined to end the war and
silence the echos of the past…

A definite improvement, though I think it needs a short opening sentence, typical of all the crawls, save for ROTJ.

If “Rey Palpatine” is removed somehow, what is the motivation of Palpatine to have Ochi try to find Rey and kill her parents while doing so?

Simple, he senses Rey’s power in the force/her potential in the dark side, similar to how he sensed Anakin’s potential. You might need to an extra line or two culled from elsewhere to sell this, but imo it’s a much less convoluted explanation.

Fair enough. Why does he stop pursuing her after Ochi fails? In fact, why does he stop to pursue Rey Palpatine in the cinematic cut? Aren’t there other Sith assassins beyond Ochi?

And I know I might sound like a broken record at this point, but I’ll mention it one more time - I’m a huge advocate for redubbing the “parking violation” alien on Canto Bight. Maybe it doesn’t bother other people the same way it bothers me, but his southern drawl really takes me out of things. Plus including some alien language with subtitles would give it some OT vibes.

For me, the parking violation alien (if you mean Slowen Lo) sounds a bit like Bernie Sanders for some reason.

I don’t really have any meaningful contribution to the edit, but it’s alway a good thread to post one’s scrawl ideas.

Yes, it’s political. I know politics in Star Wars is fashionable to hate, but I remember my first screening of TFA and being confused about the state of the galaxy for most of the film, which was made worse, not better, by the crawl.

Luke Skywalker has vanished.
In his absence, the peaceful
NEW REPUBLIC is vulnerable to
the sinister forces plotting to
overthrow the young democracy.

An evil warlord has unified
the supporters of the fallen
Empire under the banner of the
FIRST ORDER, and resolved to
build the deadliest weapon the
galaxy has ever seen.

Frustrated by the Senate’s
inaction, General Leia Organa
leads a brave RESISTANCE. She
has sent her most daring pilot
to a desolate world to find
traces of the last Jedi….
