The Clone Wars: Refocused - A complete series edit inspired by the Mandalorian [RELEASED: 1 episode + 2/5 seasons + 3 bonus] [[NEW CONTENT]]

I image neutral systems as being members of the Republic with representation at the Senate, and the intent to stay in the Republic, unlike the Separatists. However, they think other members should be able to leave the Republic if they so wish, so that’s why they don’t support the war effort.

The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS *
Time

Having finished the new season, I am very disappointed. Season 1 in my opinion was MILES better.

Season 1 was an entertaining space Western series with with a simple main story of a traditional masculine warrior archetype developing paternal feelings for a child, complemented by some fun self-contained side quests. It offered a glimpse into a culture previously unexplored in Star Wars films. Its limited scope, patient pace and focus on quiet character moments instead of over-inflated set pieces and heavy-handed thematic messages made it almost unfashionably old-school and thorougly enjoyable for every audience. It was also refershingly original for a Star Wars (despite some unavoidable fan service).

Season 2 had its nice moments in the first two episodes, but then it largely succumbed into unabashed, full-time fan service with little room for anything else. Instead of introducing new, interesting characters like Kuiil, The Armorer or IG-11, the payoffs focused on the return of characters from other media. You were supposed to cheer for Ahsoka and Bo-Katan and Boba Fett turning up not because they were interesting or said interesting things but because they were familiar from The Clone Wars / the OT. It was rewarding for hardcore fans with a capital F, but that’s my problem. It was a series for the hardcore fans, not for the general audience or casual fans like Season 1 was.

I also felt that the purpose of several episodes/scenes wasn’t to tell a self-contained story or serve the arc of the season, but to set up spin-off series, which turned out to be exactly the case. This is the real Marvelization of Star Wars, which I regret, but I am aware that I am in a minority, and most fans actually want this and will enjoy the myryad upcoming series.

Sassy/clever Obi-Wan is always good value, agreed. But in this instance I think it’s more of a gain to cut Loathsom.

I do definitely agree that every lightsaber fight cheapens lightsabers, but like the battle droid voices, they are unfortunately just part of the fabric of Clone Wars. My hope is that even after my edit, TCW and Rebels remain the least good Star Wars TV shows- I’m just trying to up the quality of TCW where it needs it most.

I’ll always try to judge the inclusion of lightsabers (or anything) on their pros and cons- in this case I think Ventress having tricked them is a cool intro for her and adds some threat to the episode beyond just “TANKS ARE COMING”. But I’ll also always stay open to community opinion.

I guess you’re right. Anyway, keep up the good work!

I’d really like to avoid Loathsome(?). He’s a very goofy villain.

I think the Ventress stuff is additive though, relatively speaking. Though there’s certainly an argument for dropping… well… almost all of Christophsis.

I take satisfaction from the fact that it’s at least far better than the original movie just since it doesn’t have the Huttlet bits.

Loathsome is a goofy villain for sure, but I at least take some enjoyment from Obi-Wan’s dialogue. It’s refreshing to see Jedi actually do something other than fighting. As for the Assajj/Kenobi/Anakin three-way, Neverargreat pointed out in another thread that every inconsequential lightsaber fights takes away from the mystery and coolness of lightsabers.

Just my two cents though - it’s your edit after all! And it’s definitely better than the original movie with Baby Jabba.

I think I’ve fixed my video stream issues. I’ve recreated the complex bit from my S01E02 Mandalore episode, and resynced everything. I’d appreciate some validation on that clip. If that syncs right and has no framerate issues, then that’s the last technical issue solved, and I can get on with more episodes.

https://vimeo.com/496375038

Also, I’m a bit stuck on Bail Organa in my S01E01 Christophsis episode. I’m using his scenes and audio from Cat and Mouse in three places:

 1. During Asajj Ventress’ fight with Obi-Wan and Anakin (originally from Hidden Enemy), bombers target Bail’s base, to make it seem like she was a deliberate distraction - I think this works because as soon as Anakin and Obi-Wan head outside they see a landing force has arrived, which emphasises they’ve been duped.
 2. At the beginning to the main Christophsis plot from the movie, I take a scouting scene from Hidden Enemy and play Bail’s “help me” dialogue and then have Anakin and Obi-Wan talk about it. Again, I think this works, because you’re now reminded that (1) there’s a large ground invasion force coming, and (2) Bail’s still under pressure so there are emotional stakes.
 3. At the very end, as Anakin and Ahsoka fly back from taking out the shield generator and arrive back at the main base, I cut in a shot of Bail saying “Thanks, you saved a lot of lives today” (originally the ending of Cat and Mouse). I don’t think this works perfectly. You can just about get over the fact that the background is a little different because it looks like Bail’s in shadow and there are shadows in the other surrounding shots. But it cuts right into Anakin and Ahsoka talking to Obi-Wan and Yoda without acknowledging Bail. I’d really appreciate if anyone could have a think about options here. I think ultimately if this doesn’t work, I’ll have to take out Bail altogether, cutting the previous two scenes too.

After watching the rough cut, I’m wandering if the scenes from Hidden Enemy and Cat and Mouse add anything at all to the episode. Might it not be easier to just cut Bail altogether? That way, the episode would begin with the droids advancing and Anakin attacking. If runtime ends up short, maybe you could restore the scenes of Obi-Wan stalling with General Loathsome or whatever his name is.

Yes - the reason is because in the original, that has narration over it, so keeping it would require the full recreation of audio from scratch. That’s something I might consider in future, as my skills develop, but I don’t want to overload myself right now.

Got it, thanks!

The opening of the episode is quite abrupt. I’ve not had time to follow this thread recently so I don’t know if it’s come up before, but a traditional establishing shot of the planet might be better. I know the text has introduced Obi but he still basically appears out of nowhere. the following scenes up until the throne room go by very quickly so even a few seconds of Obi on approach to the planet would fit.

The answer to your question lies above.

Right, and here’s the rebuilt intro for S02E02 Mandalore episode.

With huge thanks to McFibb for his v2 of the intro music!

Please, as before, let me know how you think this flows, in terms of timings, and feeling.

Having now rewatched the beginning of the The Mandalore Plot (S02E12 in the original), there is a shot of Kenobi’s ship exiting hyperspace and him flying towards the domed city on Mandalore. Are there any specific reasons for them to be cut?

Anyway, the intro looks and feels great. The timing of the text is perfect and the music is great too.

Well, I just brought mysfel to watch this film for the first time I walked out of the cinema a year ago in confusion and anger. It needed a year’s dedicated work by Hal9000 and all the contributors to do that. All I can say is that they did what is humanely possible to salvage TROS. We all should be very grateful for the efforts they put in for the ideas and the execution.

Hi all,

I have put together a watching order up for myself after the first season of The Mandalorian and playing Fallen Order, primarilty to get myself up to speed on lore things related to Mandalore and Dathomir. I consulted every available guide and episode rating list online. This is what I have compiled.

I threw out about 38% of the episodes and arranged the rest into 3 or 4 episode long “chapters”. I have to admit I haven’t been able to watch beyond “Chapter 12” so I don’t know if the rest works at all. Any advice is welcome in that matter.

I don’t know if you’ve reached that point yet, but “The Lost One” really should come after “The Wrong Jedi”. Also you could sneak in the missing episodes “Heroes on Both Sides” and “A Friend it Need” somewhere before “Dark Empire”.

Thanks for the input! I read good things about those episodes, but since they are not in an arc, I found it difficult to include them. But since posting this, I found an interesting project by EddieDean and I think I will follow his episodes instead of this after all.

Oops, my bad! I will definitely stay tuned.

BTW, I have just posted my own episode grouping/order in another thread that you might find of note.

Nice, thanks for the share. I always like to see others’ versions of these, because it helps me to see where the community’s focus is.

Take it with a pinch of salt, I posted this before I actually read through the thread and without watching through the series, just based on guides.

Reading through the thread enhanced my anticipation for the project even more I have to say! I’m with Hal9000, I tried to get into TCW several times, but just couldn’t. (Watching the Mortis arc certainly didn’t help…)

An idea, how about calling the episodes “Chapters” and having a one-word title, like the Mandalorian? I.e.:
Chapter 1 - The Apprentice
Chapter 2 - The Holocron
Chapter 3 - The Pirate
Chapter 4 - Geonosis
Chapter 5 - The Deserter
Chapter 6 - The Duchess
Chapter 7 - The Trap
Chapter 8 - The Academy
Chapter 9 - Assassin
Chapter 10 - The Sisters
Chapter 11 - The Envoy
And so on.

Of course, the different cuts would throw the numbering (my example follows the Continuity cut). Nevertheless, this would tie in with the purpose of the project nicely in my opinion. And I just love The Mandalorian title cards!

Star Wars Episode II: The Approaching Storm (Released)

Just watched the edit for the first time. I have to say it is the most effective and elegant edit of all of your works, Hal, in as much as as solving the most issues with the least amount of changes. The love story, which was ridiculous in the theatrical cut, is now perfectly serviceable, the pacing is much better, the political exposition is more clear. And as a bonus, you didn’t try to fix the “do everything button” on Padme’s ship. 😉

My suggestion to Disney: noir crime series in Coruscant underworld

Dr. Krogshöj - oojason’s post in Tobar’s Star Wars: Underworld (Live Action Series) thread could be right up your street; not only is there now a 10 minute behind the scenes video of footage from the ‘Star Wars: Underworld’ live action tv series, but also a downloadable batch of documents on the show too 😃

Quite interesting and some excellent ideas there (e.g. aging clones being phased out), but way too much tie-ins to the main OT story/characters. The show I would pitch would definitely not have Vader, Palpatine, Han, Chewie and Lando in it. Star Wars desperately needs to stop going back to the same very narrow set of people and things.

My suggestion to Disney: noir crime series in Coruscant underworld
Time

So I’m watching The Clone Wars series for the first time, because The Mandalorian and Fallen Order piqued my interest in things like the Death Watch and the Nightsister of Dathomir. And I came upon an episode titled “Lightsaber Lost”. It’s a very atmospheric episode set in the lower levels of Coruscant, featuring some unsavory characters.

Now, judging by The Mandalorian, the Star Wars universe is apparently suitable to tell simple, traditional genre stories (like Spaghetti Westerns) with only loose ties to the main saga’s themes. So how about this?

A noir style crime series set in the dark underbelly of Coruscant. The main character is a character is basically Miller from The Expanse. In fact, cast the guy who played him. He solves cases week by week but there is an overarching case for the entire season.

It’s set during the Empire era, because we never really saw Coruscant during that time and now you have the protagonist working for the Empire (vibes of Fatherland by Robert Harris).

I think the radio scene works well as it is. But how about “At last… Find me” for Palpatine’s line? It would imply two things in my mind:

 1. At last, Kylo has killed “Snoke” and thus fully committed to the dark side.
 2. At last, Skywalker is dead. “Snoke” spend two movies being really into finding and killing Luke, taking revenge for the end of ROTJ. Now he’s finally out of the picture, and there’s no more need of the Snoke charade, the final phase of his plan can be kicked into action.
