I understand that and I would be perfectly happy if there were only native, no matching subtitles.

Also, the German version is typically watched with the German dub, and I make no promises that my subs match dubs.

Sure, they are not for the hearing impaired but for people who like to watch original version with subtitles instead of dubs (yes, they also exist in Germany 😃 )

I was wondering if you could provide German “native” or even “match” .sub-files in the next version to go along with Laserschwerts German Despecialized Editions.

I know, but they only have full subtitles for German (no “native”) so I would have double opening crawl and alien subtitles.

It shouldn’t be forgotten that many films of the last decades had a 2K digital intermediate and can’t benefit from the jump to 4K technology.

Edit: at least not in resolution, color depth might be a different matter

I don’t know how others think about that but I’d prefer if the subtitles in your future releases were in sub format instead of srt. That way they would render more nicely, look the same on every device and match better to alien subtitles in SW and RotJ.

I just noticed when checking the different audio channels that the English 16mm sound is very noisy and/or clipping compared to the other audio tracks (especially noticeable with “s” and “th” in dialogues). Is this normal or did my track get messed up when remuxing for Blu-Ray?

As you can read in the first post it has less audio tracks. Also, the quality is inferior afaik.

If it is supposed to be GOUT synced like he sais, there shouldn’t be a (front) bumper at all.

Is there an easy way to make a subtitle play automatically when starting the disk? MKVToolNix has an option to mark a subtitle as “standard” but tsmuxer doesn’t. I’d like to have this to have German “titles” subtitles to the Silver Screen Edition of Star Wars.

Thanks for that link. Seems like his approach has changed quite much in the meantime, I only knew his website. His comments in the video suggest that he might be correcting some things that were already present on the negative, but as long as these changes are only about dirt, flickering or poor registration, I can live with that. The result is certainly impressive.

I will now have a look at his other videos and hope that these will support my now more positive view on his work.

I could use just pixels from Star Wars and make a giant animated penis out of it… still restoration? ok, I’m starting to troll but I seem to have a much stricter interpretation of the term than most people here.

He is basically doing what Lucas should have done in 97. He is trying to achieve a 4k quality image and doing so from a 70’s print that wasn’t intended for such high definition viewing requires that he address things most of us can’t even see because they would show up as noticeable flaws ar 4k.

The movie was shot and screened in 35mm but intended to be seen at a lower resolution?

No, it’s an actual restoration.

I’m not sure if I understand your answer correctly but the website is full of examples where rotoscoping , cloning and other techniques are used for effects enhancement. That’s not restoration but manipulation

No, this was a general statement. Google the term “dubtitles” and you will learn more about how unpopular they are and the reasons why.

Why is that? I’m terrible at understanding spoken Spanish so having both a dub and subtitles helps a ton.

Sure, and you will get that when watching Spanish movies with Spanish subtitles. But subtitles that translate into a different language should be as accurate as possible and not recreate inaccuracies of the dubbing that result from factors like lipsyncing.

Thanks for sharing. But I am a noob with this muxing stuff so I was hoping for an easily modifiable MKV to add German dubbing and subtitles to the silver screen edition. So I am not sure this iso will help me reach that goal. Or can I make an GOUT synced MKV out of it?
