I’m gonna be the contrarian and say that I’m not super keen with “A Skywalker”. Honestly, I never really had a problem with her taking on the Skywalker name in a familial sense.

Seconded. Though I prefer Rey Nobody… I don’t mind Rey Skywalker. It could’ve been built up to in a less clumsy way, but on paper it works.

“And” being cut might be noticeable to some who are aware of the change, but I honestly believe your hypothetical first time viewer, or people who just haven’t seen the movie since release, wouldn’t even notice this change. I moved “Me” up a few frames earlier, and I think the slight shift helps sell it as well.

I like how Finn assumes it’s Ren with such conviction, only to be left not knowing what to say after Rey says it was her. I think this is the simplest way to handle it.

The only way I knew that this was edited and it originally said “and” is by reading the comments on this thread. Very good job!

After reading the comic, I don’t think it confirms Snoke is a canon version of Luuke.
It certainly implies something will be made with that hand later on, but whether that’s Snoke or something else is unclear.

The comic takes place shortly after ESB, so those fully grown Snoke-like creatures (strandcasts?) being already so big and conscious after, like, a week (?) seems a bit far-fetched. Palpatine was probably already at it before he got the hand, then took it for other purposes.

Here is an end Saber spark test. 3 different versions, first clip regular speed and second at half speed to see the difference. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks to @skenera for helping with colour correction.

The idea is to give Rey a reason for burying the Sabers after the battle with Palpatine.

V1 No blue puff of smoke
V2 Hard blue smoke
V3 Softer blue smoke

https://youtu.be/wkR_Q7bTEyc

This looks great, the only thing that looks off is that the lasting smoke puff sends seems to follow the camera movement instead of staying in its own spot. But I love it other than that.

Seconded, regarding the smoke, it like, stays on that same spot instead of expanding. Personally, I’m leaning towards V1 or V3. Great work!!

You could rather straightforwardly black out the red bits, but it’s not that big of a deal. The opposite - adding red to his earlier costume - would be much more work.

Edit: It has come to my attention that the official Rise of Skywalker teaser poster features red lightning, meaning it is actually more canon than the movie itself, since the poster came out first. /s

Oh wow, blacking out the red bits would be the easier route 😄 completely flew over my head, didn’t think about it.

Although the red lightning on the poster, I think it’s supposed to represent that wormhole that leads to Exegol.

I wasn’t even aware they were chanting actual words, but I’d be down for it to be Sidious.

Curious that Sidious got name-dropped in TLJ but was only referred to as Palpatine/Emperor in the movie that actually featured him.

I think it was to enforce the “House Palpatine vs House Skywalker” aspect that JJ was trying to push.

Anakin Starkiller said:

It’s not really all that noteworthy since both Palpatine and Sidious are names that were only used in the Prequels, so either way it’s an acknowledgement of them. Then again, the Emperor had always canonically been Palpatine and was established as such in additional material, so maybe Abrams called him that not 'cause of the Prequels but 'cause it’s what was on the box of his childhood action figure or something. The same logic applies to the use of the word Sith.

Yeah, but I mean, Dooku and Maul never call him “Palpatine”, they call him “Sidious”, because they’re Sith. Padmé and Obi-Wan never address him as “Sidious”; they use “Palpatine”. The whole point is that there’s his public identity, and then his real Sith identity. Wouldn’t it make sense for the Sith Eternal to call him “Sidious”?
Like, JJ probably made them call him “Palpatine” because, like you said, it’s probably the name that was on his action figure as a kid, and a last name enforces the whole House Palpatine thing. But if you’re gonna tie his resurrection and this entire cult to the Sith, and Palpatine’s got a Sith name… i feel like they’d use his Sith name over the commonly known one.

I don’t think they were actually chanting any real words. It was just vaguely evil sounding gibberish.

They were. Once he goes “Look what you have made”, they go “Palpatine! Palpatine!” and then transition to vaguely evil sounding gibberish.

Throwing my two cents here.

Yay red lightning.

But keep in mind, it’s not really red like a lightsaber. It’s got a pink-ish hue.
https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/starwars/images/2/2a/Epguide316.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20120312233700

Also, I’d make sure every time he uses his Sith Lightning is red. So both when he’s firing it at the fleet and when he’s shooting it at Rey. Otherwise it’d just get confusing.

On a completely unrelated notes, has the fact that he magically gets his Windu-deformations and new clothes ever been discussed? Cuz as it stands, he got rejuvenated, then ran behind the Sith Throne, got naked, but on new clothes, and ran back around to walk through the fog and go “look what you have made”.

Maybe someone could try superimposing Sidious’ red robes over the robe he wears when he’s goading Rey into killing him. That’d be a start.

Also, has it been already suggested to making the Sith Eternal Acolytes chant “Sidious” instead of “Palpatine” (them calling him by his Sith name makes more sense)?

Wow. I had assumed the over-the-top pacing was because the scenes were cut down, but maybe they just didn’t shoot enough.

I think it’s more of a ‘oh shit, she dispatches them too quickly’ type of deal. Like, maybe, originally, Ben kills the Knights, and we cut to Rey’s fight, and they realized that it’s better if we intercut them, but Rey beats them all in seconds, so…

Hey folks, not sure if someone brought this up.
https://youtu.be/ECnectUdeOo?t=122

Here, the narrator brings up a very interesting point:
When Rey fights those Red Guards/Sith Troopers after giving her saber to Kylo, they show the same action TWICE.

Like, she kills 6 guards, then we cut to Ben killing some more Knights of Ren, and then she kills those same 6 guards again, simply shot from various different angles, as if they were complete different set of guards.

Which, once you see it, holy shit, you can’t UNsee it.

Was this already talked about/did someone already fix this?

I have an idea I don’t know if it’s been added or not, but has Leia’s line of ‘Always’ been added to the Jedi speaking to Rey on Exegol ? If so, do you think she should appear next to Anakin and Luke like in jonh’s 2.0 edit?

This would be cool.

Also, John, I was wondering if you considered adding in Leia, among the ghosts? If not, was it because you liked the idea that mother and son become one with the Force at the same time?

Sorry for the weird question, I just finished watching this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8RBGydnTzE and thought ‘shit Leia being among the ghosts would’be been nice, yeah’. If you’re interested in the music from the clip, it’s Samuel Kim’s arrangement of The Force theme.

I showed a friend ghost force ghosts today, and he recommended that I add a little more sparkle to the jedi close-ups. I’m going to do a test, let’s see what remains.

John, did you consider adding Leia? Or Adi Gallia/Shaak Ti/Aayla Secura? Or did that turn out to be difficult (I mean, the Jedi are basically glorified extras, but Leia?)

Supposedly, the only major change in later drafts is that Leia dies earlier and that Snoke but Worse Tor Valum is replaced by a holocron, though obviously that’s hard to confirm without the scripts.

Another major change is that the fight at the end is a 3-way fight between Kylo, Rey, and this Knight of Ren girl called Sollony, who’s the new Phasma, basically, and is there at the end so Kylo isn’t the final enemy.

Would have been sick to have Palpatine hiding in the sith shrine deep below the temple instead of Exogol, right under the noses of the New Republic and The First Order. Imagine the surprise of the destroyers emerging from deep below the surface of the industrial regions of the capital. A true power play.

Judging from this concept art this may have been the case in an early draft.

Okay, now I’m convinced the final sequence should be on Coruscant. My problem with it in DotF was that Rey and Kylo were halfway across the Galaxy from the big battle, but utilizing the Sith shrine beneath the Jedi Temple would be a brilliant way to remedy that. The Sith Citadel could be left as is, but the other 2/3 of the battle would require some FX work. Basically, you’d need to swap out the background. Finn’s mounted assault could be on the street, with defected stormtroopers, while Poe leads the battle in the skies. My one issue is I don’t see the fleet being hidden below Coruscant. Anyway, luckily, the ground isn’t visible in most shots, so it could just be said to be happening in the upper atmosphere. The space horses are visibly in the sky, however. Maybe they could stay there instead of on the streets?

All I’m hearing is Kylo walks through the ruins of the Jedi Temple to get down to the Sith Temple, and feels echoes of the past, gets quick FLASHES of Anakin’s attack on the temple. This… this is where his grandfather killed the Jedi and changed the galaxy.

Did anyone consider using the audio from this (at 18:19)
https://youtu.be/orSF0EvYRD4?t=1092

to help explain Palpatine’s presence? “More than a clone; less than a man”. He says it in the Emperor voice and everything.

I’m not good at the audio stuff, but hey, if anyone here will take this up, it’ll be a cool thing to include. I remember that line was in the early leaks of the film, so I was bummed to find out the later leaks stated the line had been removed.

I’ve actually cut that a little heavier and taken out Ben’s exhale. It sticks with the action a lot more without that pause.

I liked the exhale, it was a fun Ben trait. I just wish it was positioned somewhere. Fact is that his last line in the movie is “ouch”, so I figured ‘let’s keep as much Ben characterization as possible’.

Hey everyone.

I just discovered this thread and stuff I saw here is amazing. I figured I’d share this small change I made to the Kylo vs Knights fight (I started reading here at page 82, so if someone’s already done it, sorry in advance 😄 )

https://streamable.com/mlgd3p

I never understood why they put that close-up shot of Kylo lowering himself, it just froze the action and made it look like he was waiting.
